BEST BOOKS EVER 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter LOVES these books and always gravitates towards them. They are fun to read and very interactive. I just bought several sets as gifts for new parents!!

PERFECT FOR BUSY & TOUGH BOYS! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have a 1 year old son who, until these books, would NEVER sit still long enough for me to read to him. I got one of these books for him ("where is baby's belly button") about 3 months ago, and he LOVED IT! The pages are cardboard, so he can't rip the pages out (which he normally does). The "flip-ups" are made of a thick paper so it's rather difficult for him to rip those out, as well. The can be ripped out, especially by rough & tumble boys like mine, but it takes some effort on their part, which is good considering other books get domolished in seconds. Anyway, after about 3 months, the flip-ups of the 1st book were mostly ripped out, but he LOVES that book, so I ordered the set of 3 books. Now, the flip-ups don't get ripped out (maybe one or two total of all 3 books), especially since my son is a little older now, and he now loves all 3 books. This is a GREAT product!

My daughter's favorite book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The summary: This book is a great combination of thick board pages, big cartoon people, bold colors and vivid images, and interesting interactive flaps. It's great for holding a babies attention and getting them engaged.
My daughter is 6 months old, and this has been her favorite book since she was 4 months (which is a really long time in baby age ). At first, she just watched me lift the flaps and her eyes would get wide. It was the only book that retained her attention. Now that she's a little older, she loves to try to open and close the flaps herself. Also, the colors are vivid and the pictures are interesting and bold, so she can stare at one page for several minutes and remain interested.
I've bought several of the other books by the same author that are the same theme: Where is baby's belly button; where is baby's mommy; Daddy and me. She likes all of them, but this is her favorite. Every page has a big picture of a child, which seems to be part of the tremendous appeal. And I like it too, so I don't mind reading it 4,000 times! :-)

Editorial Review:

Inside my boots I've got toes, and beneath my scarf is a...

Baby is bundled in a mountain of clothes! Peek under the flaps of clothing to find out what's underneath, and play this fun peekaboo book again and again!

Toddlers love nothing more than pointing out their heads, shoulders, knees, and toes! Lift the flap of a shirtsleeve to discover the elbow, pull up the boots to discover the wriggling toes! With child-appealing language and striking collage paper illustrations, Marion Dane Bauer and Karen Katz capture a child's fascination with his body and all of its wonderful parts. This book is a perfect addition to Karen Katz's flap board book series.

Should be Required Reading in All Classrooms! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

_Am I Blue?_ is a brilliant YA anthology that should be required reading in every classroom! Dealing with homosexuality in teenagers and their parents and friends, these stories will move any reader--gay, straight, questioning, or bisexual. This anthology helps gay kids understand that they are not alone, while shining a light on what it feels like to be homosexual for straight readers. The stories have similar themes, but range in genre, giving every reader something to thoroughly enjoy. I can't recommend it strongly enough!

My only complaint is that there were no stories that really focused on a bisexual character.

Original stories by C. S. Adler, Marion Dane Bauer, Francesca Lia Block, Bruce Coville, Nancy Garden, James Cross Giblin, Ellen Howard, M. E. Kerr, Jonathan London, Lois Lowry, Gregory Maguire, Lesléa Newman, Cristina Salat, William Sleator, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jane Yolen

Each of these stories is original, each is by a noted author for young adults, and each honestly portrays its subject and theme--growing up gay or lesbian, or with gay or lesbian parents or friends.

Charming! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The Blue Ghost is a simple straight forward story about Liz (9 years old) and her grandmother working together to get the grandmothers old cabin in the woods ready to sell. As we meet Liz, she wakes in the middle of the night to find a glowing blue female figure calling her name and ultimately it is up to Liz to figure out what this ghost needs her to do! This book is ideal for readers just starting out with chapter books, its got easy to follow (and quite charming) plot twist that are very easy for beginning readers to follow, since sometimes for them it's a struggle to read the words AND comprehend the story! With The Blue Ghost, that shouldn't be an issue at all! Also this book has pictures, which will help bring the story to life for the reader! Overall, this is a great starter chapter book that gifts the reader with a charming feel good story!!

Editorial Review:

Liz is staying with her grandmother in her old house in the woods of northern Minnesota when one night a noise awakens her. It is someone calling her name, calling for Elizabeth. Liz opens her eyes. There is a blue ghost in her room! What does the ghost want from her?

Required summer reading selection 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was a choice for my son's required summer reading. He would recommend it. The book wasn't too long and he read it quickly. It was a different genre than he typically reads, but he liked it.

A little too depressing to be touching, but the heart is still there 3 out of 5 stars.

Okay, I think I see why this particular little book won a Newberry Honor. However, despite all its artistic merit, including some incredible writing and poweful storytelling, it's a very dark and depressing tale. This is absolutely necessary to get across the message and the heartbreak; however, it should still be a valid warning. I still cry every time I think about this book. So, no, it's not a feel-good story. But it is powerful.

On My Honor 4 out of 5 stars.

I think that On My Honor is a really great story. The author is from our area and her descriptions about the river and setting are very accurate. I felt really bad that Joel had to go through so much before he finally told the truth. This story shows why it is important to be honest when something happens. It might not change the outcome, but it sure makes things easier to deal with in the end. The story is sad, but in the end Joel does the right thing. I think any middle school kid would enjoy this story and connect with Tony and Joel.

Editorial Review:

When his best friend drowns while they are swimming in a treacherous river that they had promised never to go near, Joel is devastated and terrified at having to tell both sets of parents the terrible consequences of their disobedience. "A powerful, soul-stirring novel told simply and well

Every writer needs this book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Marion Dane Bauer's book has been a tremendous help in my understanding good writing, and improving my own writing. Even after publishing three picture books and a novel for middle grade writers, I still like to reread her specific techniques and instructions on writing craft skills. If you are interested in any aspect of writing, you would certainly benefit from the information presented in this easy-to-use guide for authors.

Disappointment 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for a 13 year old writer and was very disappointed. While the book may be useful for writers several years younger than her, much of what was covered in its pages is taught in late grade school and early middle school classrooms. Chapters that do hold potential--such as the one on revising--still fall short of what they could provide (particularly if your writer already revises and has others review his or her work). If you are at the point of trying to find guides and writing resources for a budding young writer, the child is probably already beyond most of what this book has to offer. If you are looking for an introduction to the very basics of dilogue, points of view, rising action, and character, this book is probably a good buy.

Five Stars 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A very interesting Dear America story. American history is filled with different religious groups who come here this one is about Mary Ann Elizabeth Rodger also know as Polly who comes to America from England where her father and his congregation moves from England to Minnesota. Notihng goes as her father had planned. The voyage was terrible and the land in Minnesota was barren and only thing they could afford to live in are sod homes. Polly experiences the freezing Minnesota winter and the hot summers and insects. All Polly can think about is everything that was better back home andall they used to have. The congregation ends up rejecting their reverend and her family heads off to find a new home. I thoroughly enjoyed this book which is based on the writer's own family experience it also reminded me of my own experiences. I've spent a lot of time in Minnesota and could easily relate to the freezing winters and the hot summers filled with insects. Polly, her father and family reminded me of my own great-grandfather and his family. His father was also reverend in our family. It was fun reading a story about someone else's family while being reminded through out the story of my own.

Editorial Review:

"Have you ever come face to face with a lonely brown bear? 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever come face to face with a lonely brown bear?
10 year old Jonathan does. Jonathan lives with his Father who is a new keeper at the Alaska zoo. Jonathan is lonely and longs for his Mother and sister who have delayed moving with the family to Alaska so that his mother, a teacher, could finish the school term. There are many children in today's global marketplace who deal with being separated from parents because of their parents jobs demand travel or relocation. I thought the author dealt with this separation very well in developing the comparisons between a lonely young brown bear who is shunned by his mother and young Jonathan who longs for his own Mother and the security of his family together. The author also sends her young readers a message that moving to a new community is not the worst thing that could happen to a family. Jonathan loves animals and because he is "a new kid" and adjusting to his new surroundings he spends a lot of his free time at the zoo. He especially enjoys playing a game he and his sister invented where he imagines himself inside the animals becoming what they see and feel. Then he describes what he has imagined in every detail for his sister who is handicapped. The way Jonathan cares for his handicapped sister is touching and helps us to understand the depth of his young character. Jonathan is devastated when "Momma Goose" one of his favorite animal friends is killed by a wild brown bear when after it broke into the zoo. Jonathan is angry and wants to avenge his goose friend's death. After investigating the troublesome visiting bear, Alaska department of Fish and Game decide the wild bear is too dangerous and must be put down. Jonathan faces the bitter reality of his revenge and then puts himself in danger to help his father save the bear. In the end "trouble the bear is relocated to a zoo and is placed in a habitat where he is next to another bear.

Editorial Review:

Ten-year-old Jonathan practically lives at the Anchorage Zoo, where his father is a keeper. He loves animals, and even imagines himself inside their bodies, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel.

Meanwhile, a young brown bear is wandering through the woods near Anchorage, alone and hungry. One night, while searching for food, the bear crosses paths with Jonathan, who eagerly follows him onto the zoo grounds.

But when the bear accidentally kills Mama Goose, Jonathan's favorite zoo creature, the boy loses the empathy he had felt earlier. He wishes that the bear—now nicknamed Trouble—would meet the same fate as his beloved goose, and he impulsively takes steps to make sure that happens.

Based on an actual incident, and told in alternating chapters from the bear's and Jonathan's points of view, this is both an involving animal story and a thought-provoking investigation into the consequences of one's actions.
