Disappointed in Judy Blume 3 out of 5 stars.
36 of 40 people found this review helpful.

I have been reading Fudge since I was a pre-teen, so I thought I was getting the classics when I purchased this. Was I wrong!! Many of the original words have been changed. For instance: The original book had Peter asking for an airplane and records for Christmas, but the new version has him asking for CD's and an MP3 player. How silly! I wanted the classic and I didn't get it. I am truly upset that these books have been changed to impress the younger crowd. Records and airplanes aren't that foreign of an idea for kids to read about. It's like changing the words to "To Kill a Mockingbird!"

Editorial Review:

Fans young and old will laugh out loud at the irrepressible wit of Peter Hatcher, the hilarious antics of mischievous Fudge, and the unbreakable confidence of know-it-all Sheila Tubman in Judy Blume’s five Fudge books, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, Superfudge, Fudge-a-Mania, and Double Fudge. Now all packaged together for the very first time, this collection of Fudge books will please lifelong fans and entice a whole new generation of Blume readers.

X-mas Gift 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this gift for my niece for Christmas. She is an avid reader and has read the Junie B. Jones series and Magic Tree House series. Having read July Blume as a girl, I thought she would embrace these books as well. It was true, on X-mas night, she already was reading away. I am looking into adding other Judy Blume books to her personal library.

Hi all,
I read all of Judy Blooms books as a child and adored them as did all my friends. We were a group of girls though. Do you think that boys would get as much from them or even be interested.

great boxset of judy blume for the pre-adolescent girl! 5 out of 5 stars.

Obviously, Judy Blume has tons of books out that are for both young girls and boys as well as some books for older girls but this is a PERFECT boxset for a girl aged 9-13. I got it for my 12-year-old cousin for Christmas and she's read 3 of the 4 books already...and it's only 2 weeks after Christmas!

Editorial Review:

Passed on from babysitters to their young charges, from big sisters to little brothers, and from parents to children, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and its cousins (Superfudge, Fudge-a-mania, and Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great) have entertained children since they first appeared in the early 1970s. The books follow Peter Hatcher, his little brother Fudgie, baby sister Tootsie, their neighbor Sheila Tubman, various pets, and minor characters through New York City and on treks to suburbs and camps.

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is the first of these entertaining yarns. Peter, because he's the oldest, must deal with Fudgie's disgusting cuteness, his constant meddling with Peter's stuff, and other grave offenses, one of which is almost too much to bear. All these incidents are presented with the unfailing ear and big-hearted humor of the masterful Judy Blume. Though some of her books for older kids have aroused controversy, the Hatcher brothers and their adventures remain above the fray, where they belong. (Peter's in fourth grade, so the book is suitable for kids ages 8 and older.)

Editorial Review:

If anyone tried to determine the most common rite of passage for preteen girls in North America, a girl's first reading of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret would rank near the top of the list. Judy Blume and her character Margaret Simon were the first to say out loud (and in a book even) that it is normal for girls to wonder when they are ever going to fill out their training bras. Puberty is a curious and annoying time. Girls' bodies begin to do freakish things--or, as in Margaret's case, they don't do freakish things nearly as fast as girls wish they would. Adolescents are often so relieved to discover that someone understands their body-angst that they miss one of the book's deeper explorations: a young person's relationship with God. Margaret has a very private relationship with God, and it's only after she moves to New Jersey and hangs out with a new friend that she discovers that it might be weird to talk to God without a priest or a rabbi to mediate. Margaret just wants to fit in! Who is God, and where is He when she needs Him? She begins to look into the cups of her training bra for answers ...

I think that Mrs. Kelly is nice. In the beginning I did not like her. The story was very interesting. Andrew was funny. Sharon was mean. Nickywas mysterious. I thought that Nicky liked his freckles, but he did not like them. My favorite part was when he drank the feckle juice.

My Granddaughter loved it!!!!!!!!1 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was required reading for my granddaughter when she went into the 3rd grade. Once she began reading, she couldn't put it down till she finished it. I can remember when I used to have some of the authors books written for adults and how much I enjoyed them especially one she wrote many years ago about turning 40.
My granddaughter said to give this one a "thumbs up"
thanks

The librarian recommended...and it worked! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is supposed to be reading chapter books but she can't get into them so doesn't finish them. On our last library visit, I asked for help from the librarian. She said, "She just hasn't found the right book yet." This was one of the 'books' she suggested because it was audio. "Judy Blume is great and this should help spark her interest." So we got it. Well, not only did it spark her interest, it sparked mine as well! We enjoyed listening to it together in the car and even at home. One of the things I enjoy most about it is it stays centered around Sheila's thoughts/point of view and it is very entertaining and funny. The slumber party on disc three made us laugh hysterically. I never thought I'd ever try audio books but this was a great idea and now my daughter is checking out chapter books and reading them, thanks to this!

BOTTOM LINE: If you have a reluctant reader, get this fun, entertaining audio book and see if it doesn't spark your child's interest in reading!

Ruins Christmas 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My kid's and I listened to this book on CD during our morning drive to school. I was shocked and disapointed that the author plainly tells children there is no Santa Clause (she's wrong of course). I found it reprehensible that she would take this position in a children's book.

Awesome Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

'Superfudge' is the sequel to 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,' another classic children's story. This book would make a great gift for an older child. A funny and wierd book about two brothers. Peter the oldest brother does not get any attention, while his brother, Fudge, is wild and spoiled.

Twelve-year-old Peter Hatcher and his family are moving to Princeton for a year. Peter and his brother Fudge don't always get along. Their mother is going to have a baby soon, adding more uncertainty to their lives. Will the baby be like Fudge? What could be worse for Peter?

The story moves quickly, keeping the reader's attention, and is filled with humor. The reader will definitely appreciate Blume's talent for writing a good tale.

DOUBLE FUDGE
Judy Blume

Reviewed by Greg of Stockbridge Central School 3rd grade

This book is about Fudge. He is five years old. His older brother Peter is in 7th grade. Fudge calls him "Pete" for short. Fudge's family lives in New York.
In this story, Fudge really likes money. I mean he really likes money. His family brings him to the National Mint in Washington D.C. When they got to the gift shop Fudge's Dad saw Howie, a good friend he had not seen in a long time .The problem is Howie has two girls. Fudge and Peter have to spend all their vacation time with them .They drive them crazy!!!
I like this book because it was funny . For example, Fudge went crazy in the shoe store when his mother would not get him two pairs of shoes. I like the characters. For example, Peter picks on Fudge but he takes care of him too!!
I recommend this book to any one who likes a lot of humor.

Two sides of the coin 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

There are remarkably few authors that have managed to write for almost every single age group. Judy Blume is one of the few. Though admittedly she has yet to write a baby book or large print text for the elderly, Ms. Blume has somehow managed to write picture books, young readers, full chapter books, teen novels, and even an adult title in her day. We all know who Judy Blume is, but we probably know her for very different reasons. As a kid, I knew her primarily as the author of "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing". My husband, on the other hand, associates her with that deliciously forbidden text, "Forever". For some kids out there, though, "The Pain and the Great One" is going to be their first impression of this undeniably great author. As of this review, it is the only picture book ever written by Ms. Blume. Be that as it may, it shares with all her books the frustrations and confusions that all kids can relate to on some level. Ms. Blume, the great empathic, should consider adding a few more picture books to her repertoire. This first book demands it.

A white page with a pink border. In black and white print are two words: The Pain. A sister then begins to relate to us exactly why it is that her little brother is a pain. Right from the start, you see where she's coming from. This is the kind of kid who insists that his mother carry him to the breakfast table every morning. Unlike his big sister, if The Pain doesn't finish his dinner he still gets dessert. A truly shocked and probably envious sister watches, broccoli perched on her fork, as her brother dives into a delicious bowl of what looks to be strawberry shortcake. One night, she gets to stay up later than The Pain, but comes to the almost immediate conclusion that, "without the Pain there's nothing to do!". The cat seems to prefer him and she finishes with the thought that when it comes to her parents, "I think they love him better than me". Suddenly we're looking at another white page with a pink border. In black and white print are three words: The Great One. Suddenly the perspective has shifted 180 degrees. We're in the head of The Pain and he's talking about his older sister. Sarcastically referring to her as The Great One, the boy talks about all the stuff she gets to do that he doesn't. She feeds the cat, so it must obviously like her better. She knows how to do all sorts of stuff without messing up. She swims with pleasure and isn't afraid to put her face in the water. The boy's final thoughts refer to his own parents as well. "I think they love her better than me". The end.

The book was originally published in 1985. Reading it, I had to wonder if it could be published today. In the current publishing market, I can see well-meaning but oblivious department heads trying to convince Ms. Blume to give the story an ending where the boy and girl become best friends and everything ends up hunky-dory by the last page. I was a little shocked that on a first reading, this is exactly what I found myself expecting. No, what I expected was worse. Because when I got to the pink bordered "The Great One" page I suddenly thought that the story would show how much the little brother really and truly admires his older sister, even if she thinks he's annoying. There's probably a book like that out there somewhere. This book is not it. This is a book that tells it like it is. Sibling rivalry has never been so clear. Cleverly, Blume inserts tiny (I hesitate to call them) lessons into the story so that in the midst of each kid's litany of complaints, they learn things as well. The Great One learns that staying up late isn't fun without her horrid little brother. The Pain learns that playing with his sister's blocks all alone isn't fun in the least. If you're looking for anything more sappy than this, however, you're out of luck. This is Blume telling children what they already know, and kids will appreciate the honesty.

Illustrator Irene Trivas puts her back into this book. It's funny, but depending on who's telling the story, the illustrations shift ever-so-slightly in their favor. When The Great One talks about The Pain, everything he does is understandably annoying. When the boy talks about his sister, on the other hand, she suddenly becomes infinitely competent, intelligent, and skilled. She's annoying in an entirely different way. Trivas also gives each kid some remarkable characteristics. The Great One tends to sport a cowboy hat with a bright green or red feather planted in the brim. The Pain wears a wide variety of hats ranging from goggles, winged helmets, and baseball caps to his own cowboy hat and football helmet. Trivas hasn't done any picture books quite as prominent as this one since its publication. Let us hope she gets rediscovered in the coming years.

The obvious book to pair this one with would be, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. Both books are legitimate complaints from kids who feel woefully put-upon. Ms. Blume's books tend to have one thing in common: They know how to show unfairness from a kid or teen's perspective. Nobody does righteous indignation like Judy Blume. "The Pain and the Great One", a kind of he said/she said book is the ultimate example of this. For some kids it'll teach them that there are two sides to every story. For others, it'll just reinforce previously unsubstantiated claims that their other siblings have got it better. For me, it's just a great book that needs to get rediscovered. That's all.

This book is awesome and hilarious. Fudge-A- Mania is the kind of book that if you have a little brother you will understand how Peter Hatcher feels. In this book Peter's little brother, Fudge, meets a girl named Mitzi. Her dad is Peter's favorite pro baseball player. Peter tries to keep them together so he can meet Mitzi's dad. Oh did I mention they're all in Maine. It isn't a 4 star book because it is okay. But it was not as exciting as The Tales of the 4th Grade Nothing, but it is still a great book so go get this book now!
