Editorial Review:

At age 11, Caddie Woodlawn is the despair of her mother and the pride of her father: a clock-fixing tomboy running wild in the woods of Wisconsin. In 1864, this is a bit much for her Boston-bred mother to bear, but Caddie and her brothers are happy with the status quo. Written in 1935 about Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother's childhood, the adventures of Caddie and her brothers are still exciting over 60 years later. With each chapter comes another ever-more exciting adventure: a midnight gallop on her horse across a frozen river to warn her American Indian friends of the white men's plan to attack; a prairie fire approaching the school house; and a letter from England that may change the family's life forever. This Newbery Medal-winning book bursts at the seams with Caddie's irrepressible spirit. In spite of her mother's misgivings, Caddie is a perfect role model for any girl--or boy, for that matter. She's big-hearted, she's brave, and she's mechanically inclined! (Ages 9 to 12)

Babies and Girls.. and a Island too! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great fun!

As a young girl, I read this book over and over. Loved it! Magical. Shipwrecked on an Island with babies in their care - the girls in this story have an adventure. I was so jealous! I loved babies, still do! This book was dreamy fun.

The author, Carol R. Brink, also wrote "The Pink Motel," my other fav in the 5th grade. Have them both, and will treasure them forever. All my daughters read this, and liked it, as every little girl would.

Delightful! Buy it! thanks, Gramma Sally

Very cute story for girls who love to babysit 4 out of 5 stars.

I did a book report on this book as a kid and really enjoyed the story. This will delight young babysitters and little girls with younger siblings! I have a sis five years younger and could relate to the hardships of these two girls who get stranded on an island with four babies. This book has a good balance of good and bad events and a great ending. The characters seem very realistic but parts of the plot are a little far-fetched and seem fictional. Either way, it's a very fun story with nothing too gross or scary. It also has a fair amount of cute, clean humor. I would say this is a good story for younger readers and those who like a lighthearted story.

Editorial Review:

When a ferocious storm hits their ship, young Mary and Jean become stranded on a deserted island. They're not the only survivors; with them are four babies. Immediately the sisters set out to make the island a home for themselves and the little ones. A classic tale of courage and dedication from a Newbery Medalist author.

This is "Magical Melons" with a new title 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an advisory to anyone thinking of buying this book--it's "Magical Melons" with a new title. It's a wonderful book, so if you've never read "Magical Melons," you will enjoy it. Just be aware it's the same book.

Good stories about frontier life 4 out of 5 stars.

While "Magical Melons" is not as good as its predecessor, it's a charming collection of stories that get into the lives of the other siblings and some friends of the Woodlawns. Although Caddie is still present, Clara, Tom, Warren, Hetty, and others get a little story as well.

The book is interesting to a reader of more modern children's literature in its terminology, especially concerning Native Americans. But its heart is in the right place, and those who express negative opinions about the native people are shown to be wrong. The book is also somewhat religious, but not in a specific sense. Religion is just another part of the Woodlawns' lives, and the morals in the stories don't pound you on the head.

I remember riding my bike 4 miles to another library to check this out when I was younger, and I still enjoy the stories today. Recommended reading for anyone that enjoyed "Caddie Woodlawn."

Editorial Review:

Caddie and her five siblings wash sheep, help build a neighbor's house, and adopy baby animals inthis delightful sequel to the Newbery Medal book, Caddie Woodlawn. Black-and-white illustrations.

My Childhood Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As a girl, I loved this book!

Still love it. I have my hardback on my shelf, in it's pinkness, no dust jacket. Magical. The author, Carol R. Brink, also wrote "Baby Island," another favorite.

Read this a few times, as a kid, and always wanted a Pink Motel of my own. Just the other day, I told my dear Norman, Hunny, let's up and move to Florida, buy a little motel, paint it pink, and have each room different.. just like the book! Palm trees and white sand beaches are calling.. especially since it's been 20 degrees here this week, and miserable!

An adventure for kids. All my daughters read my pink copy. Buy it. Read it. You'll love it too.

Editorial Review:

Nothing exciting ever happens to Kirby or Bitsy Mellen--that is, until their mother inherits a motel in Florida from her great-granduncle Hiram, complete with a roster of eccentric guests. New this winter are the Browns, obsessed with their suntans; Miss DeGree, obsessed with her poodles; and two mysterious men, obsessed, like Kirby, with trying to find Uncle Hiram's rumored secret treasure.

A lie snowballs into trouble for Irma! 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

THE BAD TIMES OF IRMA BAUMLEIN is a great little novel about one young girl's sometimes hilarious struggle to fit in and find friendship. Quiet and bookish, Irma has a hard time making friends in the small town where she and her father have moved so he can manage great uncle's department store. Irma feels stifled in the huge, gloomy mansion where they live with a bevy of canterkerous elderly aunts and uncles, but worst of all, Irma feels her artist mother, who stayed behind in the city to finish a commissioned project, may never come back and if she does, she will have had a face lift! So when a friendly classmate chats her up on the walk home from school, Irma has to say SOMETHING, and that something is a lie that leads to a series of misadventures for our longsuffering, sometimes befuddled heroine.

Irma's fears and worries ring true, and she is a likeable character. As Irma struggles to protect her lie, the deception grows, and Brink reveals the repercussions Irma's actions have on other people, not to mention the outlandish lengths Irma goes to to make others believe her story. It does end happily, however, and Irma learns some important truths about friendship and honesty. THE BAD TIMES OF IRMA BAUMLEIN is the original title: IRMA'S BIG LIE was a new title given to the novel when it was published through Scholastic Books as a paperback

Editorial Review:

Irma's lie about having the biggest doll in the world leads her into deeper and deeper trouble.

Charming Family Story 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I was a child, I read this book by well-known Caddie Woodlawn author, Carol Ryrie Brink. Since I grew up and married a professor at a mid-West university, I decided to revisit the book. It's a fun story with lots of football, midwestern culture, and a strong 1950's feel.

Any Professor-parent will enjoy sharing this with his/her children. The book is character rather than plot driven, so don't look for lots of action. A little preachy at times, the story conveys values of diligence, sacrifice, creativity, and obedience.

Loved it!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Two are better than one is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I loved how the main characters, two twelve year old girls were such good friends. Cordy, a girl with four brothers, and Chrys, an orphan living with her elderly aunt and Gram, truly were as the author put it 'In dire need of feminine suport'! Together they have some fun and exiting adventures-sometimes with surprising results!
There is a serious side to this book when the girls are invited to take the state board examinations a year early. While preparing for the test they begin to ask what it really means to be mature, something they know they will need if they pass into highschool.
This book is 'indubitably a swelliferous book'

Editorial Review:

From the back of the Book - "Ten Martha Washingtons! What can be go as? wails Cordy to her best friend Chrys. For the Masquerade party, all the girls want to look beautiful in hoop skirts and makeup. But Chrys says"Let's be different! We'll gos as the rag doll twins. Just wait till the boys see us!" The rag doll twins expect prizes - but not the big surprise.
