Great to discuss with 5 to 9 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been great for an initial read to discuss with my children what a friend is. It continues to be a great reference tool for situations that come up. We pull out the book and read it with our children to remind them what a friend is and how a friend should treat them.

Could not be better! 5 out of 5 stars.

"How to Be a Friend" is amazing. It could not be better. Not only is it great for children having difficulties with social skills due to Autism -- it is amazing for every child. It should be on the MUST READ to your child list of every parent.

Good life lessons 5 out of 5 stars.

This book shows kids through it's illustrations and text how they should act or repond to many situations(some stressful) they will encounter in daily life. Suggestions of what to do or what to say are given for each senario in a cartoon fashion and with subtext for explanation. My daughter for exammple is learning what a "sore loser" means and is trying to modify her behavior to be more like the nice girl in the book. I think both seeing and hearing the positive themes of the book help her retain the lessons.

Editorial Review:

Written and illustrated by the creators of the popular Dino Life Guides for Families, this book uses precise language and humorous illustrations to offer specific ways to be a friend and specific ways not to be one. A special section on how to deal with bosses and bullies has valuable information for young children going forth in the world and encountering these situations for the first time.

This book is good for parents and kids living in a divorce situation. The parents part give suggestions for dealing with what the kids are going through. This is a handy reference book, in an easy read way.

Read it again 5 out of 5 stars.

My six year old son loved the book. It helps children understand better what divorce is about and what to expect. A must for children going through this.

What a great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a nanny working for divorced family. I found the 8-year old reading the book, I was interested so I read the whole book and I was so impressed I got it for my kids too. Not that I am planing on divorce but the kids have so many friends coming from divorced families and this could help them understand situation they are going through. I think the book explains very sensitively whole process of divorce and life after divorce, new partners of parents and step-siblings included. I find the book very needed and helpful. There's plenty of literature for parents going through this hard part of their life and now this is finally something for the little ones. They deserved it.

Editorial Review:

The traumatic childhood experience--when a child's parents divorce--is depicted in the form of dinosaur characters. Chapters address the full range of feelings that a divorce produces. ". . . this will become a real 'security blanket' for young readers in need."--School Library Journal, starred review. New York Times Best Children's Book. Full color.

to much info 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book to explain sex to my 10 year old daughter. I read it first then hide it fast! I didn't let my daughter read it. The book was good until it talked about masturbation. It says, "Touching and rubbing your genitals to feel good is called masturbation." This is not something I want her to know about yet. It also says 'sexual intercourse feels wonderful.' Well, I don't want her to know that either. (I don't want to lie to the girl!) So the hunt is back on for the perfect sex book.

Editorial Review:

"If you're having trouble talking to your children about sex--knowing what to say and when to say it--then here is the book for you. The talented team who created the acclaimed Dino Life Guides for Families is ready to help. With characteristic sensitivity, they present answers to tough questions. Here is an introduction to sex along with the ways girls and boys differ...and are the same. What's the Big Secret is the beginning of one of the most important conversations you and your child will have."

Some really good and very original rhymes 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

These are not classic, everyday rhymes. Many of my books have the same old stuff over and over again e.g. Jack and Jill. This book has stuff like "The Dreadful Doings of Jelly Belly" and all sorts of amazing stuff. I read this one on my own, and if dad has time he reads me some of the more complicated ones. I like it. Valerie.

Editorial Review:

Poems about picnics, pretending, and puppies make this book the book to introduce little ones to poetry about the world around them. Jack Prelutsky, one of today's most respected children's poets, has selected more than 200 short poems--old favorites, traditional rhymes, and humorous verses--that will delight young listeners. The poems cover a wide range of experiences in a young child's life, from everyday events to special days to the world of the imagination.

Marc Brown, author and illustrator of the popular Arthur series, uses colored-pencil illustrations and borders to unify the poems, helping to create a pleasing, lively collection to carry children from their preschool years into the early elementary grades. As Jim Trelease tells us in his introduction to the book, "Unlike the toys we buy our children, poems cannot break." (Ages 2 to 7)

Helps children deal with death 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My eight year old son struggled with the death of an uncle. We found this book at the local library. He read it and then recommended that I read it - "it will help you too, mom." We had to purchase our own copy and got one for our school's guidance office. Great way to remember a loved one and deal with the loss at the same time.

Excellent resource 5 out of 5 stars.

I want to put in a strong vote of confidence for this book, even though some parents have found it too much, too soon. My dad died when my oldest daughter was not quite three; my mom, when she was not quite four. This book was an enormous help in explaining to her what had happened, putting it in terms that were both straightforward and manageable. Kids want to know the facts, because the facts are usually less scary than what a kid can imagine. Also, let's face it, every kid is going to have major issues with death--don't we as adults? If kids ARE given too much information, they will let us know--by facial expression, or changing the subject, or saying they don't want to read the book. If that happens, of course any parent would take the book away. However, I found it a big help.

Editorial Review:

Explains in simple language the feelings people may have regarding the death of a loved one and the ways to honor the memory of someone who has died.

Wild About THIS Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book and my son loves this book - but I probably love it more. The librarian accidently? drives the bookmobile into the zoo and before you know it the animals are reading. The rhythm flows nicely and it's clever and the pictures are charming. Big thumbs up!

Editorial Review:

It started the summer of 2002, when the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo.

In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. "She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter." In no time at all, Molly has them "forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks," going "wild, simply wild, about wonderful books." Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

I didn't like the ending at all. 1 out of 5 stars.
24 of 34 people found this review helpful.

This was the first Arthur Book I bought for my four year old daughter...who very strongly believes in Santa . As I was nearing the end of this book while reading it to her, I realized where we were going with the ending. I understand if your target age is ten years old or so and they are doubtful, but I had to explain to my daughter after we finished the book why Santa didn't eat the stuff that Arthur had worked so hard on, and why the sister got rid of it all. I bought this book at a school book fair, and I was really looking forward to introducing her to Arthur Books. Now, I can't say that I'll ever buy another one.

We love Arthur's dog Killer! What a great pet! 5 out of 5 stars.

Not only a great children's book, but a great book for the parent. Loads of subtle humor if you look close enough (flavors of ice cream at the ice cream shop). A great book for all!

Editorial Review:

Time is running out for buying the perfect gift for Santa. Arthur has to think fast--and his little sister even faster! "Comical, colorful illustrations add to the delightful humor of the story."--School Library Journal. Full-color illustrations.

Hard Work Can Be Tiring 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"Arthur Helps Out" is one of the most recent in a series of large paperback "Arthur" stories targeted at slightly younger audiences than the Arthur Adventure books, or the chapter books based on the TV episodes.

"Arthur Helps Out" finds Arthur wanting to go out and play, but it turns out there's some work he's been putting off that has now caught up to him. He has to clean out his room, give Pal a bath, deal with the trash and more. Only once he's completed all of this can he go play, but all of the work is rather tiring.

Like all other releases in this set, all pages are fully illustrated. The story is fairly simple, but good enough to hold interest. The illustrations are also fairly well-detailed, with things to read and small side-gags.

Overall, another fine addition to the ever-growing collection of "Arthur" books.

Editorial Review:

Arthur is back in two new 8 x 8 paperbacks full of fun! In Arthur Helps Out, Arthur wants to play, but Mom and Dad have other ideas-they give him a long list of chores to do. The sooner he finishes, the sooner he can play, but he+s in for a surprise after everything is done. In Arthur and the Big Snow, Arthur wants to join his friends at the hill for sledding, but he has to wait with D.W. until the roads are plowed. By the time Dad says they can go, all of Arthur+s friends have gone home. Arthur is disappointed until Dad produces a brand-new sled-and now they have the entire hill to themselves. Arthur fans old and new will love these short stories, perfect for reading aloud.

Adorable New D.W. Book for the Holidays 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

There are only a few more days until Christmas, and D.W. is ecstatic. Unfortunately, she's also extremely nosy, and believes that there are more presents hidden around the house, other than the ones sitting under the Christmas tree. So D.W. sets out searching, looking high and low. However, she soon realizes that due to her selfishness, she never purchased presents for her family, so she begins creating masterpieces for everyone, including Pal, Arthur's puppy.

Fans of the ARTHUR TV show will be enthralled to find a holiday book perfect for young readers and their parents. While it shows how young children truly act when the holidays roll around, it also depicts how great it feels to give presents to the ones you love. This is a wonderful holiday story that will be cherished for years to come, especially by those who love D.W.

Editorial Review:

It's almost Christmas and D.W. can't wait to see her presents. She searches everywhere but the only presents she finds turn out to be for other people! When D.W. remembers that Christmas is a time for sharing, she starts searching for presents she can give rather than receive. With a little time and creativity, D.W. comes up with gifts for each member of her family-and finds that giving is the best present she can receive!

Nicely Illustrated 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My son already has D.W.'s Perfect Present, which is a great Christmas story. When I saw Arthur and the Big Snow in the store, I was happy to snatch up yet another wintry tale!

A huge snowfall dumps on Elwood City and Arthur wants to meet his friends at the big hill. However, Mr. Read won't allow Arthur to go with his friends because D.W. is to small to walk in the snow; he tells Arthur that they must wait until the snowplow comes through.

Arthur decides to go outside to play in the snow, but D.W. wants to come along. She asks Arthur to help her get dressed and they no more get out in the snow and D.W. begins yelling that she wants to go inside NOW because she can't move in the deep snow.

D.W. then asks Arthur to play some games, but Arthur wants to go back out in the snow by himself. He plays several games with his sister, but by the time the plow roars by, Francine calls to let him know that he missed both the sledding AND the hot chocolate.

Arthur is, of course, very disappointed. When his Dad asks him if he's ready to go sledding, he dejectedly says that it's too late. His Dad pulls out a new sled and Arthur excitedly agrees.

The Reads' have the hill all to themselves and they settle back home, sharing hot chocolate. Mrs. Read says "Sometimes, good things are worth waiting for."

As with other Arthur stories published by Little, Brown, and Company, Arthur and the Big Snow features glossy pages, colorful illustrations, and easy-to-read print. It's great for a bed time story, as well as for beginning readers wanting to practice. There is also a "board game" on the back of the book called Downhill Racers, which is played using pennies or coins. (Heads moves one space, tails move two). These back-of-the book games are always a neat plus to the Arthur books.

My only reservation about this book is the unanswered question as to WHY Arthur had to wait for snowplow so D.W. could tag along. There was no backstory explaining that Mr. and Mrs. Read were busy with projects and Arthur had to babysit (although Mrs. Read WAS sitting at the computer with tax books on her lap). I actually felt sorry that Arthur was stuck at home at D.W.'s every beck and call. If it were me, I'd rather hang out with my friends!

So, plot-wise, I think D.W.'s Perfect Present is better. However, both are lavishly illustrated and they're always well worth the affordable price, in my opinion.

Editorial Review:

It's snowing, and that means no school! Arthur wants to join his friends at the hill for sledding and fun, but he has to wait with D.W. until the roads are ploughed. By the time Dad says they can go, all of Arthur's friends are back home sipping hot chocolate. Arthur is disappointed, until his Dad produces a brand new sled. Arthur, Dad, and D.W. have a blast on the hill and Arthur realizes some things are worth waiting for.
