If you are a teacher, Get it! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I found this book when I was getting my teaching certification, and wanted to teach a 4th grade class on "Voice" or point of view. It was the basis for a great lesson! I think this could be appropriate for students in 3rd grade up to a basic high school English class. The same event (a trip to the park) is told by 4 distinctly different characters who all encounter each other in the park. So the story is told 4 times, once by each character. Everything from the word choice, font style, and beautiful illustrations relates the "voice" or point of view of each person. It is not only highly instructuve, it is a visual treat and intriguing. I have read the story many times, and each time the students see something that I missed. I love this book and share it with all my teacher friends and librarians.

Editorial Review:

I called his name...I settled on a bench...I was amazed...I felt really, really happy...Four people enter a park, and through their eyes we see four different visions. There's the bossy woman, the sad man, the lonely boy and the young girl whose warmth touches those she meets. As the story moves from one voice to another, their perspectives are reflected in the shifting landscape and seasons. This is an intriguing, many-layered, enormously entertaining book that demands to be read again and again.

Editorial Review:

According to one little boy, his dad is just about the coolest thing since sliced bread. Equally at ease jumping over the moon and banishing the Big Bad Wolf, this fearless father, in his hideous brown plaid bathrobe and blue-striped pajamas, seems capable of anything. The awe and admiration in his son's tone are gratifying; his hyperboles are droll. "He's as strong as a gorilla, and as happy as a hippopotamus. He's all right, my dad." Dad appears (always in a robe and PJs) as a weightlifting, goofy gorilla and a frolicking hippo. At other times he's a brown plaid fish ("He can swim like a fish"), a placid-faced wrestler ("He can wrestle with giants"), and a tightrope walker (the tightrope looks remarkably like a clothesline, with Dad circumnavigating rainbow-colored socks).

Anthony Browne, award-winning author and illustrator of Willy's Pictures and many other witty picture books, pays bright and loving homage to that most remarkable of beings, the dad. Every illustration depicts the world as seen from the low height of the little boy narrator and through his starry-eyed gaze, as well. Sure, we might look at this man and see a slightly overweight fellow with five o'clock shadow and poor taste in nightwear, but to his son, this is Man. He is everything. And until that fateful day when the boy begins to roll his eyes at his dad's hopelessly embarrassing ways, Dad should just revel in the divine, unadulterated love of his child. Hidden and not hidden messages 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am a 2nd grade teacher who just received this book as a gift. Today I read it with my students for the first time. We loved it! Not only does the story have a good message that everyone in the family should pitch in and help, but the illustrations are wonderful. It took 2 viewings to get through all of the hidden pigs. I also think it is especially poignant that Mrs. Pigget has no face at the beginning of the book because she has no other identity except to serve her husband and sons. Reading this book led to a great class discussion and a writing assignment. A gem for any classroom or family collection.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "Mr. Piggott and his sons are a male chauvinist lot

who, outside of yelling for their dinner, don't exercise themselves much around

the house. When Mrs. Piggott finally tires of the endless chores that sandwich

her workday, she leaves the menfolk on their own, with a note saying, 'You are

pigs.' With the cooking and housework untended, they soon turn genuinely

porcine, a transformation Browne foreshadows with pig faces on the wallpaper,

vases, fireplace, phone. As in most of Browne's art, there is more than a touch

of irony and visual humor here. Fun to read aloud."--Bulletin, Center for

Children's Books.

A WARM, FUNNY TRIBUTE TO MOTHERS 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Sure to be a family favorite artist/author Anthony Browne pays a tribute to all Moms just as he did to fathers with "My Dad." Once again he provides whimsical illustrations accompanied by a funny, loving text.

We first meet Mom with the simple line, ""She's nice, my mom." Next, we're reminded of how well she can cook and juggle a myriad of tasks - housekeeping, shopping, carpooling, the list never ends.

Of course, Mom is so wonderful that she can do everything - she has a green thumb and makes flowers grow, she can cheer others up, sing like an angel (and, when the necessity arises she can "roar like a lion).

Truth is, if she weren't so busy being a Mom she could be a dancer or even an astronaut. Of course, her most important job is simply being a Mom. And the most important lesson that youngsters will learn is that she loves them and she always will.

- Gail Cooke

Editorial Review:

The perfect gift for Mother's DayFollowing up on his bestseller My Dad, the inimitable Anthony Browne returns to celebrate the every-mom. In this paean to motherhood, we first meet Mom over a cup of coffee, clad in a floral robe. The robe is ever present as her child describes her wondrous abilities and traits: from fantastic cook to brilliant juggler to great painter and from being as beautiful as a butterfly to being as comfy as an armchair - this mother will be recognizable to one and all.Through all the charming characteristics detailed, Browne brilliantly paints his heroine with humor and affection. The ultimate message that shines forth is: "I love my mom. And you know what? SHE LOVES ME! (And she always will.)"

Editorial Review:

Art makes a difference!

The same family that had such an enlightening experience in Anthony Browne's Zoo is now going to an art museum, Mom's choice for her birthday treat. But wisecracking Dad and their two sons are skeptical about how much fun this trip will be, and they're not quite sure what to make of the art. ("What on earth is that supposed to be?" asks Dad.) But, with Mom’s help, once the boys start really looking at the paintings, they begin to find what pleasures they contain. Most of the family leave with a new appreciation of art – Dad is just never going to get it – as well as a sketchbook. On the trip home, Mom teaches the boys – and readers – a drawing game, which one of her sons (this book’s author) has been playing ever since.

This new book is the product of Anthony Browne's engagement as writer-and-illustrator-in-residence at the Tate Britain in London. There he worked with a thousand children from inner-city schools, teaching literature using the resources in the gallery – and playing the shape game. In his artwork for the book, he surreally transforms, in his signature style, some famous paintings in the Tate's collection.

Wonderful illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've been a big fan of Anthony Browne long before our two year old son was born. I forgot that I had this book and decided to see what our son thought of it. He can't get enough of it! The text is very simple but the illustrations are lots of fun. They are much less complex than some of Mr. Browne's other books but just as lovely to look at. I think our son can relate to the the situations in the book. It's a great book for parents too because the illustrations are really fun. I keep noticing little details even though we read this over and over and over and over!

Great preschool choice 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a pre-k teacher and this book is a great introduction to what kids like. I use it at the beginning of the year and have the kids draw a picture of what they like to do. There's a limited amount of text on each page and the illustrations are adorable!

Perfect choices for families facing struggles with separation anxiety in any form. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Anthony Browne's SILLY BILLY tells of Billy, who worries about everything - especially when he spends the night away from home. In fact, on a visit to Grandma's, Bill is so worried he can't sleep. Can Grandma help? This fine story embeds two points: about a Grandmother's loving skills and a boy's ability to conquer his fears - perfect choices for families facing struggles with separation anxiety in any form.

Editorial Review:

A funny, sympathetic antidote to worry from a Hans Christian Andersen Medalist

Billy worries about everything, from shoes that might march out the window to giant birds that might carry him away. One night on a visit to Grandma's, Billy is so anxious that he can't sleep. But Grandma has just the thing for a boy like Billy — tiny, colorful worry dolls, made to do his worrying for him. That night when Billy puts the dolls under his pillow, he sleeps like a log. But soon it dawns on Billy that something is not quite right — now he has all those worry dolls to worry about! Leave it to Anthony Browne, with his surreal illustrations and a final clever twist, to come up with a solution that puts Billy at ease at last.

Read books yourself before you read them to your kids. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

So many of the 'horror stories' in these review could have been easily avoided if the parents were just a little conscientious about what they read to their kids.

This book isn't for everybody, but it is great. It is a truly unique children's book with outstanding illustrations. I've never seen humor like this in a children's book before, and few children's books are this thought-provoking, both in the text and the pictures. This book is not for toolboxes who avoid thinking at all opportunities.

Offensive and Embarassing 1 out of 5 stars.

My six year old checked this book out of her school library. We sat down to read it this evening and we got thgouth about 4 pages and I closed tha book and asked to get something that wasn't neasrly as offensive. I understand the point of view of zoo haters such as Mr. Browne, but I don't appreciae being ambushed in such a way that belittles the family and puts fathers in such a negative hateful light. I love my wife and children, and don't believe that most faithful husbands and loving fathers resemble anything close to the father that Mr. Browne portrays. I'm sorry he had a rotten childhood.
