Excellent book! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is very touching...it sensitively portrays the sacrafices Mexican immigrants have to make to move to America for their children to have a better life. Very well done themes of parental love, long car trips, the sadness of leaving one's home country, sibling realtionships, husband and wife being romantic (tasteful and age-appropriate), and a child's growing understanding of the complexities of life. Buy and read it to every child (and adult) you know.

Editorial Review:

Christmas is coming and Carlos and his family are going home-driving south across the border to Mexico. But Mexico doesn't seem like home to Carlos, even though he and his sisters were born there. Can home be a place you don't really remember?

At first, La Perla doesn't seem very different from the other villages they pass through. But then Carlos is swept into the festivities by Grandfather, Aunt Ana, and the whole village. Finally, Carlos begins to understand Mama and Papa's love for the place they left behind, and realizes that home can be anywhere, because it stays in the hearts of the people who love you.

Eve Bunting and David Diaz-the Caldecott Medal-winning team behind Smoky Night- collaborated once again to create a dazzling picture book that glows with holiday joy and the spirit of Mexico.

Annie Loves to Read with Grandma 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Do you have a secret? Annie had a really big secret with Grandma who comes on the bus to Annie's home. In the book The Wednesday Surprise, written by Eve Bunting, Grandma cooks hot dogs, eats ice cream, and reads with Annie. Every Wednesday they have fun together. They want to have a birthday party for Annie's dad. First they want to read more books.
I liked this book because Annie read with Grandma. It is funny and sweet. I had fun reading this. The only part that I didn't care for is the length of the book.
The book, I think is a four star rating, because it was good but it was not wonderful.

Editorial Review:

Anna and Grandma are planning a surprise for Dad's birthday. Dad thinks he has received all his presents, but Grandma stands up and gives him the best one of all: she reads aloud the stories that Anna has taught her.

I am a student teacher in a three year old preschool classroom. We recently planted mums outside our window, and afterwards read this story to the children. They loved the beautiful pictures and the contrast between the city flowerbox and our daycare garden.

Editorial Review:

Follow the progress of a little girl and her father as they purchase "a garden," and board the bus to carry it home. The pansies, tulips, daffodils, geraniums, and daisies are lovingly planted in a window box, and the candles on the cake are lighted--just as Mom walks in the door to find her daughter, her husband, and her birthday surprise.

Do not buy this book 1 out of 5 stars.

A really, really bad story. A turkey is chased out of his home and hunted down through the woods. Here is a sample: "Turkey's legs bent in the middle as he fell. Mr.Moose put a booted hoof on his head and smiled..."I hope you don't have other plans for Thanksgiving, Turkey...My wife won't mind that you're too fat". The Turkey is than dragged back to Moose's house, where...SURPRISE!!, it turnes out he is a guest, not dinner. Is that supposed to be heartwarming?!
My four year old daughter who loves books, had a strange look on her face when I read this book to her (once), and then asked to please not read it to her again!! I won't. It went straight to the recycling bin.

Ms. Wirey's Class Book Review 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is about Thanksgiving. We all thought that this book was really funny. We learned that having friends is good. Our class learned some new words. The book told us what happens at Thanksgiving. Everyone one should read this good book.

Editorial Review:

Mr. and Mrs. Moose invite all their animal friends for Thanksgiving dinner and the only one missing is Turkey. When they set out to find him, Turkey is quaking with fear because he doesn't realize that his hosts want him at their table, not on it.

Immigrant empathy 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Eve Bunting portrays a warm look at the plight of one immigrant girl transitioning to an American classroom for the very first time. I read this book with second graders yesterday (who have a brand new student from Norway in their midst) and I think all of them felt compassion for their friend's situation. The illustrations are amazing and Ted Lewin has used his wife Betsy to portray the role of the teacher. This is truly a book that should not be missed.

Editorial Review:

Farah feels alone, even when surrounded by her classmates. She listens and nods but doesn't speak. It's hard being the new kid in school, especially
when you're from another country and don't know the language. Then, on a field trip to an apple orchard, Farah discovers there are lots of things that
sound the same as they did at home, from dogs crunching their food to the ripple of friendly laughter. As she helps the class make apple cider, Farah
connects with the other students and begins to feel that she belongs.

Ted Lewin's gorgeous sun-drenched paintings and Eve Bunting's sensitive text immediately put the reader into another child's shoes in this timely story
of a young Muslim immigrant.

Just Ducky! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Duck celebrates his birthday with animal friends in this beautifully illustrated book for younger children (from about age one to five). The animals bring him gifts:

"Duck got a ball that was pumped full of air. And a scuba mask, and a watch to wear And suntan oil to rub on his beak So it wouldn't burn and it wouldn't squeak."

The problem is that most of the toys are for water play, and Duck and his buddies live in the desert. Good thing Turtle brings the present that makes it possible for everyone to splash around and have fun!

The book is both simple and clever. The highlights here, though, are Jan Brett's vivid right-on illustrations of the Southwest: Big, bright, colorful, with warm tones, and enough detail to keep older toddlers interested. An absolute delight!

Great book to read to young children or for beginning reader 5 out of 5 stars.

For his birthday, Duck's animal friends give him a swimming suit, a diving board, and a slide, but it is not until Tortoise arrives with an inflatable pool that they have something to swim in.

A Picnic in October 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Tony cannot understand why every year his family has to lug picnic supplies and even a birthday cake to the Statue of Liberty. It seems silly to him to celebrate a statues' birthday. As the day progresses, Tony begins to understand what the statue represents to immigrant families such as his. This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. The text is touching and meaningful. The illustrations capture the emotions of the text perfectly. This would be an excellent book to introduce the concept of immigration or to present to a child taking a trip to the Statue of Liberty.

A Picnic in October 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book! I use it in my 4th grade classroom in conjunction with a study of the Statue of Liberty, but it also speaks to many other issues such as immigration, respect for grandparents and patriotism. As always, Eve Bunting has beautiful illustrations that work so effectively with the text. In light of the events of 9-11, this book is even more meaningful and evoked a discussion of the Twin Towers shown in the skyline of New York.

Editorial Review:

Tony thinks it's dumb to go all the way to Liberty Island for a birthday picnic. But that's before he understands what the Statue of Liberty means to Grandma.

A fun story of animal encounters and lessons learned 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Three leprechauns have an important job: they must dig up the pot of gold before the rainbow comes to expose their hiding place - but on the way they can't resist some mischief involving farm animals, putting the pot of gold in danger. A fun story of animal encounters and lessons learned evolves.

Editorial Review:

The three leprechauns Ari, Boo, and Col have a job
to do. They must race to where they've buried the pot
of gold and dig it up before the rainbow comes. The
clouds are already gathering, so there'll be no time for
mischief along the way.

But Mrs. Ballybunion's cow, Miss Maud
Murphy's hen, and Old Jamie soon find out that the
three clever fellows can't resist having a little fun on
the road to Paddywhackers Bog. For, in addition to
putting a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, mischief
is what leprechauns do!

Delightful illustrations from a Caldecott medalist
and a playful text written in a lilting Irish style
make this a perfect story for St. Patrick's Day or any
other time of year. Includes an author's note about
leprechauns and rainbows.
