Sunflower House 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautiful pictures. I read this book to my 3 & 4 year old sons.
They thought it was really neat so we planted a sunflower house that spring. Even my 9 yr old son wanted in on the project. It was a great way to introduce not only the wonders of the plant growth process but also the responsibilty of caring for things that grow.

I loved the beautiful illustrations that are sure to be bright enough to catch even a young child's eye. I liked the simplicity and rythm of the text. I especially liked the child's viewpoint narrative and the cycle of life science that is woven into the story and the pictures. Above all I liked that the story celebrates one of life's simplest but grander pleasures.

A very warm celebration. 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I saw a copy of BUTTERFLY HOUSE and bought it right away because I was attracted to the love and warmth that the book radiates through its story and illustrations on one of my favorite subjects, the butterfly. Butterfly lovers can look for MALINDA MARTHA MEETS MARIPOSA too, different in that it features the Monarch rather than the Painted Lady and different again in that it offers the dimension of acting out the life-cycle as a play. Similar is the love for the butterfly that the children will experience in each book. One doesn't seem complete without the other. Together a child will build a life-time of love and knowledge on this subject.

WELL DONE CHILDREN'S BOOK. A PURE JOY TO READ AND VIEW. 5 out of 5 stars.

What a beautiful story. A little girl finds and saves a tiny "worm" from a hungry Jay. She takes the caterpillar to her grandfather, who then helps her build a butterfly box. They decorate it together, and eventually, when the butterfly breaks out of its cocoon and becomes a beautiful butterfly, they let it go back into the wild, their garden.

This is rather a simple story at first glance. The art work by Greg Shed can only be described as "delicious." Soft colors, well blended and mellow, along with very accurate details of flowers and wildlife, make this book a treasure to view. Like so many children's books, the pictures can be enjoyed, even without reading the words.

Now as to the text is this particular book. I found it absolutely delightful. More prose that anything else, it not only precisely informs as to how to raise a butterfly, but it very well illustrates the love between the grandfather and granddaughter. Now I am not as sophisticated as those folks who write for Publisher's Weekly, who's almost incoherent review seemed to feel the syntax was a bit "treacly." I found nothing overly sweet or cloying what-so-ever. I do hope I never become so sophisticated either. How boring! I suppose that lines such as "How strange to think my grandpa once was young like me. " We would have been best friends if I'd been there back then," I said. My grandpa smiled. "It worked out anyhow, we're best friends now," was a bit over the top for them.

Anyway, when the little girl grows up, she lives in the same house her grandpa did. Her garden is just as beautiful and is filled with butterflies each year. She, an old woman now, feels the butterflies have told generation after generation of other butterflies how she saved one of their own, years ago, ergo, that is why the older lady now has more butterflies in her garden than anyone else in the area.

The book concludes with detailed instructions on how to raise butterflies, how to build a butterfly house and what to do after they have "hatched."

I liked this work. The kids I read it to liked it and I do highly recommend it.

Open Up Your Golden Gate! An Outstanding Book. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This must be one of prolific writer Eve Bunting's best works, personalizing the fantastic story of the Golden Gate Bridge through the eyes of a construction worker's son. "There's a crew of more than a thousand men working on that bridge, Robert, including [your friend] Charlie's dad," says mom. "I know that, but I just shrug. To me, it's Pop's bridge." Robert's dad is a "high iron man, "balancing on the catwalks, spinning and bending the cables....When the fog rollss in, he disappears completely." Charlie's dad is a painter, painting the bridge the now famous shade of "International Orange" before it's even finished.

However, Robert's a bit of a snob when it comes to bridge building. In his hierarchy, iron men are --literally and figuratively--much higher than mere painters. One day,, however, there's an accident at the bridge, and the boys watch in horror as "scaffolding crashes down into the safety net. The net tears loose, and men go with it into the swirling tide." (This scene is based on an actual event.) Through RObert's binoculars, they see that both of their dads are ok.

Later, in a somber, reflective mood, Robert realizes that there is equal work and risk for all the workers, no matter what their job. The book concludes on a celebratory note; however, as Robert and Charlie traverse the bridge on opening day, and share a meal of sarsaparilla. stewed chicken. a Chinese noodle dish made by Charlie's dad, and a snickerdoodle pie. Robert shares a surprise intended for his dad alone with both his and Charlie's dad: The last piece of a jigsaw puzzle of the bridge that both men put in together.

The narrative is superb, combining historical facts (there's an excellent afterward with more information) with a story of friendship and maturity. The illustrations are equally outstanding, and rank with the finest in kids' books. C. F. Payne perfectly captures the awesome magic and mystery of the bridge, and his facial close-ups--very slightly exaggerated--recall the work of Norman Rockwell and Patricia Polacco. Payne even paints the period clothes and other details (e.g., room interiors) accurately. An outstanding work--certainly one of the best I've read this year.

Editorial Review:

The Golden Gate Bridge. The impossible bridge, some call it. They say it can't be built.

But Robert's father is building it. He's a skywalker--a brave, high-climbing ironworker. Robert is convinced his pop has the most important job on the crew . . . until a frightening event makes him see that it takes an entire team to accomplish the impossible.

When it was completed in 1937, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge was hailed as an international marvel. Eve Bunting's riveting story salutes the ingenuity and courage of every person who helped raise this majestic American icon.
Includes an author's note about the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Making your own way 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Young Jamie wakes early on St. Patrick's Day, much earlier than his sleeping family. He remembers that there will be a parade to the top of Acorn Hill today, and then he remembers that his brothers say he's too little to march in the parade.

Well, fine then! He'll just have a parade of his own!! Jamie sets off in his green sweater, hat and coat with Nell the dog and march up the center of town to Acorn Hill by themselves. Along the way, the meet some of the other villagers, one of whom gives Jamie an Irish flag that he proudly waves in his own parade. Does he make it to the top?? You'll have to read to find out!!

"St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" is a beautiful story for any child who has ever been told that they're too small, too weak, too short, too this, too that, to do something. You can see Jamie's' happiness at proving everyone wrong. The pen and ink illustrations are lush and detailed: you could count the shingles in the roofs or the bricks in the walls. Green and a little yellow are the only colors in the book, emphasizing the spirit and colors of St. Pats in Jamie's sweater, the flag of Ireland and, of course, the lush green grasses of the Emerald Isle.

Because it's not a book about the history or legend of St. Patrick, there is no reason to limit it's reading only to March 17th. Teachers would find it a useful book in teaching both about Ireland and, of course, proving that smaller doesn't mean incapable. A fine book by Bunting and Brett, and highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Jamie seeks a way to prove that he is not too young to march in the big St. Patrick's Day parade.

Is illegal immigration justified? 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 58 people found this review helpful.

Eve Bunting seems to hold the opinion that breaking the laws of this country can be justified. I would not read this book to my third graders. In the case of illegal immigration, the end does not justify the means. In her book, Ms. Bunting portrays a family fleeing a Cuba-like country for a Florida-like destination. After enduring a harrowing journey in a rickity, leaky boat, the family arrives in America and is greeted by their fellow countrymen in time to celebrate Thanksgiving. Sorry, but this book does not warm my heart. The problems and responsibilities thrust upon the United States by uncontrolled immigration is too serious an issue to gloss over.

A wonderful and touching story 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

The first time I read this book was to a third grader. When it finished she sat in silence. Then, with an amazing amount of concern and compasion, she asked if it was a true story. The way the book touched her (and me) was amazing. It is a great book to help children (and adults) see the hardships many immigrants face. It is a wonderful book that can be used in the classroom as the center of a integrated lesson, or just read and discussed. This book is one everyone should read, around Thanksgiving or any time of the year.

Looking Back 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful and poignant remembrance of a woman who lived many years ago, looking back on her past as an egypitian queen as she lies on display in a museum. A really fantastic children's book with gorgeous illustrations.

A new twist on an old mummy! 4 out of 5 stars.

Shows the fascination we have with the ancient through magical watercolor illustrations. Interesting story line, reminding us that each one from the past has a history, a mom and a dad and things they loved.

Why do Kids love this stuff? 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My 4 year old pulled this off the library shelf, I worried it might be scary but he loved it. His fist Mummy book of now many. Kids are just fansinated with this kind of thing. It is creepy but they take it so matter of factly that it doesn't bother them. I thought the poetry was magical.

Editorial Review:

Clad in flowing linen robes, adorned with jewels, pampered by servants, Heb-Nefert led a life of leisure and joy with her royal husband on the banks of the Nile. Now she lies, a mummy, encased in glass in a museum, and recalls the days of long ago. “A mummy’s moving soliloquy on youth, love and the fleeting nature of life is the centerpiece of this hauntingly beautiful picture book.”--Publishers Weekly

A sentimental beauty of a book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I found this book at the library and cried when I read it. The story is that of a young family coping with the loss of their special tree that died from poisin someone had dumped nearby. The daughter is confused and asks the philosophical question,"Why did it die?" and the father answers "Trees get old and die." To which she replies "But not like this." You see the tree was healthy and full of life. It was sudden and unexpected as death often is. The book has an inspirational ending when the daughter remembers her acorn collection and decides to plant one so that the tree lives on in some way.

I bought this book for a friend whose husband died suddenly at the peak of his life, his young daughter only six months old. I think this book would be great for anyone who needs some help explaining death to children. It would be a great stepping stone especailly for kids reluctant to discuss their grief. I wouldn't be surprized if child psychologists have reccommended this book for just that.

Editorial Review:

Alice is dismayed when one day the leaves on the old oak tree start to fall. Although she can't save the tree, Alice remembers something that gives her hope: the acorns she collected when the tree was still healthy.

A Touching Story 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rudi's Pond is a wonderful story about how a little girl deals with the illness and death of her friend. The illustrations are magnificent. This book is a wonderful tool for teachers who might have a terminally ill student or a sudden death in their classroom. It also will help to enlightened children on the mature subject of dying. I recommend this book for children ages 5-8.

heartwarming 5 out of 5 stars.

This touching tale of childhood friends will warm your heart and bring a tear to your eye.

Editorial Review:

The young narrator's best friend, Rudi, is very sick, and it's hard for her to understand. When Rudi dies, the narrator and the other children in school help to build a pond by the big knobby oak to remember him by. A hummingbird feeder that Rudi made hangs by the pond, and one day a special hummingbird comes to visit. . . . Based on a true story, Rudi's Pond is an insightful book that will help young readers to deal with loss. Once again author Eve Bunting and illustrator Ronald Himler have combined their talents to create a memorable picture book.

Stilted writing, but my son enjoyed it 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I personally found the writing style a little stilted in the book. For example, "A devil prances, fiery red, with horns asprouting from his head." and "Thunder, thunder up above! 'What is it, mother?' 'Shh, my love! It's just the thump of creature feet, A creature in a winding sheet."
It reads more like a poem, not the way we speak naturally. If you like a poetic style, you'll probably love this book. But if you want a more relaxed book, then don't buy it.
But anyway, having said that, my four year old son liked the book. The pictures are scary, but not gruesome. Probably a little too scary for a toddler.
Illustrated by Jan Brett, of course the pictures are well-done, but to be honest it's not on the same level as her other works. There is not nearly as much detail as she usually puts in. (For example, no borders filled with tiny illustrations.) The art doesn't look much different than most Halloween books.

Sunshine Home by Savannah R 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Have you ever been to a nursing home? This book is about Timmie and his gram. Timmie goes to visit his Gram in the nursing hme with his parents. He spends time with her learning what she does every day. This is a good book with fantastic details, like when the author said Gram was wearing a white sweater with pearls and blue earrings. The problem is that Timmie doesn't want to leave Gram because he feels bad for her because she was hurt. I would recommend this book for kids ages 8 - 11. If you ever go to a nursing home, you should read this book so you won't get scared about knowing what's inside. The theme for Sunshine Home is family is everything. Do you think that Gram will go home with them? by Savannah R

Sunshine Home 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my 2 aunts when my Grandmother passed away. It is a wonderful book about how people really feel. I found it quite therapeutic after my Grandma died. The grandma in the book reminded me of my grandmother - same sweater, liked to have her nails painted and the same hair style. I read it to my children. It is a wonderful and touching book.
