SOS TITANIC 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

SOS Titanic is a great, quick read if you enjoy books about the Titanic. It was written by Eve Bunting. It gave me mixed emotions because I knew that the ship was going to sink, but I did not know which characters were going to die. I would give this book a five star rating. This is a great story about survival and a test to see who your true friens are.
Should Barry, the main character, try to save himself, or try to save the third class passangers who are locked down below? Saving the third class passangers would mean that he probably would not get to the lifeboats on time. Will Barry risk it and save his friends, or will he try to save his own skin?

Editorial Review:

Barry O’Neill is journeying to New York on the Titanic’s fateful maiden voyage. He’s homesick and worried about the Flynn boys traveling in steerage who have threatened to throw him overboard. Little does Barry know that a struggle with the Flynns is the least of the dangers that await him. This suspenseful young adult adventure story is based on the true and terrible events that occured as the Titanic sank. “A dread sense of the inevitable drives this taut disaster story-and makes it nearly impossible to put down.”--Publishers Weekly

So Close to Us 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Every time I read this story to the children in the library I worked at I cried. A year later I still remember it vividly. The book showed the atrocity of what we did simply by showing the emotions of Japanese-Americans 50 years later. One truly feels for the father uprooted from his life and culture; the grandfather uprooted from the sea and his fishing. I can relate to the tragedy of being removed from the water. Eve Bunting builds to a dramatic, emotional climax- which is not easy to do in a short children's book. Chris Soetpiet's illustrations are beautiful, with excellent use of both color and black and white. And the short historical synopsis at the end provides opportunity to discuss with children the reality behind the story.

Editorial Review:

Laura Iwasaki and her family are paying what may be their last visit to Laura's grandfather's grave. The grave is at Manzanar, where thousands of Americans of Japanese heritage were interned during World War II. Among those rounded up and taken to the internment camp were Laura's father, then a small boy, and his parents. Now Laura says goodbye to Grandfather in her own special way, with a gesture that crosses generational lines and bears witness to the patriotism that survived a shameful episode in America's history. Eve Bunting's poignant text and Chris K. Soentpiet's detailed, evocative paintings make the story of this family's visit to Manzanar, and of the memories stirred by the experience, one that will linger in readers' minds and hearts. "Secret Place" Teaches Respect and Harmony 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"Secret Place" is a beautiful story: through its words, illustrations, and message. The author and illustrator tell the story of a boy who finds a secret place that is the home for many kinds of urban wildlife. This story is a wonderful teaching tool for children. It teaches respect for animals and wildlife, while at the same time educating about the many different kinds of wildlife that live in the city and how they came to live in an urban environment. "Secret Place" would be excellent for an environmental unit. I would find a way to work it into any unit, or have children read it on their own. It would be a good story to read to and share with children. Another excellent book with an environmental message is "Two Days in May" by Harriet Peck Taylor.

A boy and his secret place 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is good because it has good pictures. I like the picture where the coyote licks the water. This book reminds me of Owl Moon by Jane Yolen because both stories are about boys and fathers getting together. They are both also about birds flying and the connections people have to animals. Secret Place has great descriptions like this, "Close by is a freeway where cars and trucks boom, and a railroad track with freight trains that shunt and grunt. There are warehouses with windows blinded by dust and names paint-scrawled on their brick walls."

Editorial Review:

A small boy finds a secret place in the city that he shares with a white egret, mallards, and even ducklings.

Reviewing Our Teachers Having A Baby 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This picture book is about a teacher, Mrs. Neal, who sits her students down one day for a discussion. Mrs. Neal explains to her students she will be absent soon because she is about to have a baby. Then Polly, the main character, asks Mrs. Neal when her stomach got so big. The class never really noticed her stomach's size.
The students begin to worry that Mrs. Neal will never come back. But most of all, the students can't understand how a teacher can become a mother or how a mother could be a teacher.
Finally one day the students arrive and see they have substitute teacher and automatically know why. Mrs. Neal has a girl and names her Isabel, which the kids all like. Mrs. Neal and Isabel visit the class and the students are all amazed with the little baby, but they are still worried Mrs. Neal won't come back. Mrs. Neal reassures them and that makes the students all happy again.
The pictures help to clearly visualize the text and help the reader get a sense of feeling from the story being told. This would be an excellent book for a Caldecott award. The illustrations are so creative and well sought out.

Editorial Review:

"A warm—but unsentimental—story about the excitement, anticipation, and anxieties experienced by a first-grade class whose teacher has a baby during the school year. The children"s questions and comments, the teacher"s good-humored responses, and the way this event becomes a focus for activities make not only a good story but an excellent set of lesson plans for pregnant teachers! The watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the postures, moods, and expressions of the children and the liveliness of their classroom." —Kirkus Reviews

We Were There 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Eve Bunting puts an interesting spin on the story of Jesus' birth in this beautifully illustrated book. The unlikely characters of snake, toad, scorpion, cockroach, bat, spider, and rat each take a page to introduce themselves. To complement each page of text, Wendell Minor creates a framed portrait of each animal with amazing detail. Each animal exclaims, "I will be there" as it makes its journey across the desert sand to see the baby Jesus. Unnoticed in the little stable, these creatures witness the events of the night from the shadows. The dark brown and deep blue tones repeat throughout the book and contrast with the light from the bright North Star and the warm glow coming from inside the stable. The poetic writing style adds to the peaceful tone of the story about the little animals. Usually the creatures are hidden from view, but in this unique portrayal of the nativity story, the reader gets a glimpse of them as they are each revealed in a brief moment. We Were There will add spice to any collection of Christmas books.

Editorial Review:

On a winter night long ago, a baby boy was born in a stable with only the animals to witness his arrival. But it wasn"t just the cows and donkeys and soft little lambs who were present. Smaller, less loved creatures were there, too: the snake, the scorpion, the cockroach, and others. Lyrically written by Eve Bunting and luminously illustrated by Wendell Minor, this beautiful book offers a unique and moving perspective on the Christmas story. It reminds us that all God"s creatures, both great and small, celebrated the arrival of the Christ child.

Fantastic for under two years 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I wish I'd seen this book when my son was younger... at 2 and half he really likes it and memorized it after a couple of readings. Bright illustrations with just one word (repeated twice) per spread - with a couple exceptions at the end. Very cute, simple and very engaging - especially considering the lack of text... would recommend.

Good New Baby Gift 5 out of 5 stars.

My one year old loves this book. The illustrations are very good, very colorful, and the text is brief. It makes a very good new baby gift as well, since the story is about the excited clamoring of all the farm animals over the arrival of the newest member of the barnyard crew - a baby chick!

Simple story...Beautiful pictures...Great bedtime story! 5 out of 5 stars.

my son is 28 months old...loves farm animals (trains more, but...) he can easily sit through longer books, but this is a favorite and gets the 'again, again' rating every night - which amazes me as it is so simple!!!! This is one of Eve Bunting's best although there are many...one of my favorites! Actually my 5 year old doesn't mind sitting through this either! and super easy for my 7 year old to read to either the 2 or 5 year old (who could probably read it to the 2 year old if he wanted to!)

Editorial Review:

Rooster is spreading the word: Hurry! Hurry! All the animals rush to the barn--and arrive just in time to greet the tiniest member of the farm family, hatching out of his egg. Eve Bunting's simple energetic text and Jeff Mack's colorful art come together in a joyful book that's perfect for preschoolers.

Silly Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My 3 1/2 & 21 month old sons love this book and insist I read it to them evry night before bedtime. The artwork is attention grabbing and the prose has a nice cadence. Of course I throw in my own personal sound effects for the witches, ghosts, werewolf & Frankenstein. This just gets them giggling like crazy. This book is not too scary for the littlest kids, because if you look closely, there's almost always a 'hidden' item which helps explains the 'spooky' stuff. You can point this out as you go along. The surprise ending is quite nice too. I highly reccommend this book for kids 18 months to 5 years.

Great Halloween book 5 out of 5 stars.

Good Halloween Book 4 out of 5 stars.

I don't know why - I guess I didn't read the reviews - I just expected this one to be scarier. Maybe it's the cover illustration. It's ok with me that it's not. Great picture book to read to 3-5 year olds!

Cheyenne Again 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This literary piece is well written with the exquisite paintings that amplify the story over all. To have the visual images interact with the writing so well, I have to wonder how such an artist would only have illustrated a few books. A must read and a visual pleaser to the afficianados of art. Irving Toddy is a fine artist whose work should be sought out more. Eve Bunting is a good writer whose work is always complemented by the illustrator. In this case, to have a Native American-Navajo illustrate and to have lived the characters experiences is great.

A simple, yet profoundly moving tale of Native Americans. 5 out of 5 stars.

I teach reading and language classes. This book is an excellent resource to encourage reading, to introduce new language, and to increase my students knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

In the late 1880s, a Cheyenne boy named Young Bull is taken from his parents and sent to a boarding school to learn the white man's ways. "Young Bull's struggle to hold on to his heritage will touch children's sense of justice and lead to some interesting discussions and perhaps further research." —School Library Journal

A Few Errors Can't Steal the Magic of this Book 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I agree with other reviewers that it is a pity that Ms. Bunting's editors didn't assign someone knowledgeable to review the text and help the artist with moon phases and menorah placement. On the other hand, many of the Jews who love and celebrate Hanukkah do not practice strictly in accordance with dietary and other religious laws.

What makes this book special is showing a festive, cheerful holiday having such significance in the practice of one's religion and being one's true self that Grandma, as a young girl, risked death to observe it. Scholars have often been somewat dismissive of Hanukkah, regarding it as a minor holiday, and yet it is a favorite for many people. This story helps us understand why. There is a message of hope, since Grandma has survived and is surrounded by a loving family, but the deft characterization of Great-Aunt Rose shows that suffering a horror like the Holocaust stays with one for life.

As a school librarian, I'm finding this a powerful introduction to the Holocaust, as well as to Hanukkah. The children are baffled and horrified at the idea that anyone would be imprisoned, starved, killed, "just because..." - and even more aghast when we point out that the hate and killings continue now with Jews AND other ethnic/religious groups. The narrator's musings at the end of the story as to why Grandma wants to remember such a painful time in her life allow us to look at what we have to remember to keep it from happening again.

Editorial Review:

For one family the traditional Hanukkah celebration has a deeper meaning. Amidst the food and the festivities, Grandma and Great-Aunt Rose begin their story -- the one they tell each year. They pass on to each generation a tale of perseverance during the darkest hours of the Holocaust, and the strength it took to continue to honor Hanukkah in the only way they could. Their story reaffirms the values of tradition and family, but also shows us that by continuing to honor the tragedies and the triumphs of the past there will always be hope for the future.
