Something like a parable... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This unique picture book tackles one of society's most menacing things: the gang. A young boy is approached by a tiger (the gang), and is asked to hop on (join the gang). Once he's riding, the boy is excited and can't believe the tiger has such an interest in HIM, a 10 year old. Then he learns the darker side of being on the tiger, and wants to get off. The tiger does not make it easy, but in the end, the tiger loses a potential member. The bold, striking woodcuts accentuate the text, and deftly portray the scenes the text describes. This book opens up many avenues for discussion with parents, teachers, and (older) children, especially children who are not exposed to gangs on a regular basis.

Editorial Review:

Esteemed author Eve Bunting brings all her insight, empathy, and storytelling skill to this powerful allegorical tale, set in the streets of an unnamed city and illustrated with striking woodcuts.
Danny, new to town, is proud when a glittery-eyed tiger invites him for a ride. He climbs up onto the tiger"s massive back, and together they cruise the neighborhood. Everyone gives them respect—shopkeepers and passersby, even other kids. Danny feels powerful and much older than ten. Soon, though, he realizes it isn"t respect people feel for him and the tiger—it"s fear. And when he decides to get down off the tiger"s back, he discovers it"s a lot harder than climbing on.
Whether the tiger is interpreted to represent gangs, drugs, or something else altogether, this poetically told, dramatically illustrated book is sure to provoke discussions about temp-tation, peer pressure, and conformity.

The Song of Angels..... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"It was cold in the garden. Cricket felt small and worthless in the bigness of night..." He hops up icy steps, under a big door, across sleek floors, into a warm room, "and over to a tall tree with stars clinging to it." He hopped onto a branch and began to sing. And that's when he hears the voices of father and child discussing the songs of angels. "Did you know that angels sing in the songs of birds, and frogs and people and crickets?" the big voice asked..." The child didn't know that and neither did Cricket. "He was small, then. But not worthless. What a great discovery!" Eve Bunting's simple, gentle text is poetic, and complemented by Timothy Bush's stunning and expressive illustrations. Together word and art celebrate the wonders of the holiday season in a warm and touching way. Perfect for little ones 3-7, Christmas Cricket is just right for quiet, read aloud cuddling, and is a sweet and lovely story to help ring in the holidays. "And in his hiding place Cricket rubbed his wings, one against the other for his own joy, and sang and sang, and sang."

Editorial Review:

In a California garden on a rainy night, Cricket feels small and worthless. He hops up some steps and finds himself in a place filled with light and warmth and a tall, sparkling tree. He begins to sing but is scared into silence by two voices, one big and one small. It is then that he makes a marvelous discovery. Eve Bunting's text is filled with her customary tenderness and charm, and Timothy Bush has captured its mood in his luminous illustrations. Together they create a memorable holiday book about a cricket who discovers that though he may be small, he is not insignificant.

Silly Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My 3 1/2 & 21 month old sons love this book and insist I read it to them evry night before bedtime. The artwork is attention grabbing and the prose has a nice cadence. Of course I throw in my own personal sound effects for the witches, ghosts, werewolf & Frankenstein. This just gets them giggling like crazy. This book is not too scary for the littlest kids, because if you look closely, there's almost always a 'hidden' item which helps explains the 'spooky' stuff. You can point this out as you go along. The surprise ending is quite nice too. I highly reccommend this book for kids 18 months to 5 years.

Great Halloween book 5 out of 5 stars.

Good Halloween Book 4 out of 5 stars.

I don't know why - I guess I didn't read the reviews - I just expected this one to be scarier. Maybe it's the cover illustration. It's ok with me that it's not. Great picture book to read to 3-5 year olds!

A Few Errors Can't Steal the Magic of this Book 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I agree with other reviewers that it is a pity that Ms. Bunting's editors didn't assign someone knowledgeable to review the text and help the artist with moon phases and menorah placement. On the other hand, many of the Jews who love and celebrate Hanukkah do not practice strictly in accordance with dietary and other religious laws.

What makes this book special is showing a festive, cheerful holiday having such significance in the practice of one's religion and being one's true self that Grandma, as a young girl, risked death to observe it. Scholars have often been somewat dismissive of Hanukkah, regarding it as a minor holiday, and yet it is a favorite for many people. This story helps us understand why. There is a message of hope, since Grandma has survived and is surrounded by a loving family, but the deft characterization of Great-Aunt Rose shows that suffering a horror like the Holocaust stays with one for life.

As a school librarian, I'm finding this a powerful introduction to the Holocaust, as well as to Hanukkah. The children are baffled and horrified at the idea that anyone would be imprisoned, starved, killed, "just because..." - and even more aghast when we point out that the hate and killings continue now with Jews AND other ethnic/religious groups. The narrator's musings at the end of the story as to why Grandma wants to remember such a painful time in her life allow us to look at what we have to remember to keep it from happening again.

Editorial Review:

For one family the traditional Hanukkah celebration has a deeper meaning. Amidst the food and the festivities, Grandma and Great-Aunt Rose begin their story -- the one they tell each year. They pass on to each generation a tale of perseverance during the darkest hours of the Holocaust, and the strength it took to continue to honor Hanukkah in the only way they could. Their story reaffirms the values of tradition and family, but also shows us that by continuing to honor the tragedies and the triumphs of the past there will always be hope for the future.

Goth meets ripped gauze 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Imagine this Prom scene: girl in sweet, demure, ripped gauzy dress walks in with Gothboy dressed to the nine's in Goth attire. Closer---the girl has a black teardrop tattoed beneath her eye.

There, I have just introduced Eve Bunting, writer of sweet and bittersweet children's books: "The Wall," a Vietnam veteran takes his son to experience the Wall; "Smoky Nights," ethnic neighbors come together in this burning of L.A. during the '70's; "Dreaming of America," the story of one immigrant family arriving at Ellis Island; "I Love You, Too," a fabulous story of a daddy rabbit's and son's mutual love. And there is
David Wiesner, artist extraordinaire with an edgy twist to his work: "Tuesday," frogs on lily pads flying everywhere; "Flotsam," a camera criss-crossing the oceans reflecting children across time and space; "June 29, 1999," science experiment gone really bizarre and involving aliens.

"Night of the Gargoyles" merges these two Caldecott winners to create a phantasmagorical children's book. Eve has been infected with Goth--go, girl (not that I'm Goth, but it is a great Gothic sort of book). As a children's librarian, I always advise my student/children to look at the cover and every page in a children's book. You can count on creators of children's books "not to color in the lines," meaning they may begin the story anywhere: cover, end pages, half-title page, title page, or even page one. So we look first at the cover of "Night of the Gargoyles." Yep, they began there. One gargoyle has "awakened" and stares at us, almost as if we caught him in the act. Blood-red end pages (just inside front and back covers)--we'll come back to those, hey! a definition page--good, we need to know what a gargoyle is, title page with a regular gargoyle, page one--a really scary close-up of three stony gargoyles at the close of day.

"till night comes"....three gargoyles stretch and yawn. "[G]argoyles creep on stubs of feet"... Wow, what evil looks, or is it my imagination? All these dark drawings are eerie, fantastic, and downright scary.

In fact, I read this to my first graders and totally creeped them out. I showed them the book beforehand, told them it was really really scary and I could read another book. NOOOOO, read that one!! OK, if you get scared, go to the other room. My library is divided into two rooms. We have story time in one room and class in the other. As I read to these quaking children, hugging each other, the girls would jump up, scream, and run into the other room. Even some of the boys joined them. Then they would run back, sit down, scream, and do it again. Fun, fun, fun! It was delicious, scary fun. Of course, they all wanted to check out this book.

The reaction of these children is surely a great indicator of just how wonderful this book is. Of course, you know your own child. The illustrations are graphically vivid in portraying these creatures in stony action. They annoy the cherubs in the fountain who have to spit water forever. They sit together like old men huddling in front of an old-time country store and grump over the hazards of their job: hot sun all day, leaves clogging their throats, pigeons doing what pigeons are wont to do. Then they scuttle about to terrorize the night watchman. Until..."It's almost morning now/and so the gargoyles fly,/ up walls/ as spiders do." And they become guardians of the day once again, "till night comes."

Blood red. The end pages, remember? This is just my theory, but I think David, even though he totally loved drawing in blacks, whites, grays, silvers, he missed his vivid greens and oranges, and yellows, so he asked the publisher, Could I have red, please, for the end pages? There they are!

Editorial Review:

In this stunning collaboration of two exceptional talents, the striking charcoal illustrations and nimble text reveal what happens at night when the gargoyles come to life.

Editorial Review:

"Maybe that's one of the reasons people get dogs, to kind of close up the empty places inside them."

Eleven-year-old William never needed a friend more than now. After his parents' separation, his father's new engagement, and his grandfather's dying without any warning -- adopting big, beautiful Riley is the first thing in a long time that has made him feel better. That is, until Riley innocently chases a horse.

Local law states that any animal that chases livestock must be put to sleep. Suddenly William stands to lose another thing close to him. Together with his "totally unsurpassed" friend Grace, William begins a campaign to reverse the county commissioners' decision. But with a community divided on the issue, and the bully Ellis Porter trying to stop them at every turn, will they be able to save Riley's life?

Celebrated author Eve Bunting shows William's determined struggle to fight for what he believes in. The Summer of Riley is an inspiring novel about learning to accept life's changes, the healing power of friendship, and the unending desire to protect those we love.

The Incredible Journey via small plastic bathtub toys 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you were a man like David Wisniewski and you had just created the emotionally and physically exhausting Caldecott winning "Golem", (a book which deals with religious persecution and the very essence of what it means to be alive), it would be more than understandable if you wanted to follow that book up with one about a small yellow bathtub toy. Which is, of course, precisely what he did. While "Golem" was a vast creative epic that utilized his particularly original cut-paper technique to its best advantage, "Ducky" is a small clever story written by fellow Caldecott winner Eve Bunting and set through the eyes of a plastic toy on the high seas. It has emotional impact, beautiful illustrations, and a true story behind its tale. Altogether it makes for a delicious picture book.

On the title page we see large wooden create being lowered onto what can only be the deck of an ocean liner. Turn the page and the ship is silhouetted against a sky, followed closely by an impending storm. Our story begins. As the duck himself says right off the bat, "I am a yellow plastic duck and I am in great danger". With the horrible storm, the crate containing Ducky and his hundred some fellow toys is released into the violent sea. The crate breaks apart and suddenly the water is filled with yellow ducks, blue turtles, green frogs, and what looks to be red beavers. The duck experiences great fear, particularly when a passing shark (rendered in its pupil-less-many-toothed glory) attempts to devour a load of toys. The duck notes that the shark does not seem too much care for getting plastic caught in its teeth, "though we are guaranteed non-toxic". Days pass and all the toys separate in the waves. Our lone hero bobs alone, night and day, past icebergs, fish, and pelicans, until washing safely ashore. A boy locates the duck with glee (it seems many residents of this Alaskan town along the coast have been finding and recording the lost bathtub paraphernalia). At long last the duck returns with the boy to his home and is placed in a bubbly frothy bath, thereby, "fulfilling my destiny".

An author's note at the end records the 29,000 plastic toy animals that were washed off a ship in 1992 and how their arrival on the shores of North America aided scientists who wished to learn more about currents, winds and tides. But even if this were some inspired flight of fancy on the part of the writer, it would still make for a fabulous tale. Ducky has an odd wry way of speaking. He notes his predicament with great emotion and intensity. Feelings that kids reading this book will readily appreciate and understand. From the scary notion of being lost to the final arrival in a safe place, there's a lot to identify with in this book. Wisniewski really brings this story fully to life, though. His shark is a nasty frighteningly realistic critter o' the sea. But I was really taken with the beautiful shots in the book. There's an aerial point of view of Ducky from above red, yellow, beige clouds in what can only be the early stages of twilight. His sea is a beautiful pulsating series of blue and white images. Some artists work with cut-paper and make you wonder how they managed to create their elegant scenes. Others take this one step farther and let you forget that what you're looking at wasn't created by a computer or drawn by hand. Wisniewski does both.

You're going to find quite a few rubber-ducks-lost-at-sea books out there (Eric Carle's, "10 Little Rubber Ducks" comes to mind) but this is the best of the lot. A fine collaboration between two Caldecott winning heavyweights it has everything a good children's picture book should have. Danger, excitement, and a happy ending advocating cleanliness (amongst other things). This rubber ducky is truly the one.

Editorial Review:

When a violent ocean storm causes a crate holding assorted plastic tub toys -- including one resilient little duck -- to wash overboard, the course of Ducky's life alters drastically. This engaging story based on a real event includes an author's note.

A Good Lesson in Growing Up! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Little Bear loves his little boat, but to his dismay, one day finds that he's too big to fit into it. His mother explains how it's his destiny to get bigger while it's his boat's destiny to stay the same size. He finds a little bear to bequeath his little boat to, but on the condition that the little bear will find another little bear to give it to when he, himself, outgrows it. This is a very sweet story about growing up. I bought this story for my 4yr old to help him accept seeing his 2yr old brother using things that he'd outgrown. The illustrations and flow of the text are both great!

Editorial Review:

Little Bear loves his little boat. He rows it around Huckleberry Lake, fishing and dreaming. But then Little Bear begins to grow and grow, until one day he doesn't fit in his little boat anymore! All children who experience growing pains will appreciate Little Bear's predicament. And they will smile with satisfaction as the solution to his problem unfolds in simple, lyrical words and charming pictures from two award-winning picture-book creators.
