Editorial Review:

"Maybe that's one of the reasons people get dogs, to kind of close up the empty places inside them."

Eleven-year-old William never needed a friend more than now. After his parents' separation, his father's new engagement, and his grandfather's dying without any warning -- adopting big, beautiful Riley is the first thing in a long time that has made him feel better. That is, until Riley innocently chases a horse.

Local law states that any animal that chases livestock must be put to sleep. Suddenly William stands to lose another thing close to him. Together with his "totally unsurpassed" friend Grace, William begins a campaign to reverse the county commissioners' decision. But with a community divided on the issue, and the bully Ellis Porter trying to stop them at every turn, will they be able to save Riley's life?

Celebrated author Eve Bunting shows William's determined struggle to fight for what he believes in. The Summer of Riley is an inspiring novel about learning to accept life's changes, the healing power of friendship, and the unending desire to protect those we love.

Fabulous school reading material for Thanksgiving 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Eve Bunting has managed to describe at a child's level the fear, anticipation and exhaustion that often accompanied many of our ancestors as they came to America. This book is a reminder of the people who both came before us and those that still come with hope to America.

It is a beautiful, meaningful and heartwarming book to share with elementary students and families either during the Thanksgiving season or while studying history and immigration.

Refugees' voyage to freedom 5 out of 5 stars.

My third graders like this book very much and it sparks a lot of discussion about America and freedom. It's about a family that must flee a Caribbean island because of political persecution. They escape in a crowded boat, where they face hunger and fear. On their trip they are even robbed and shot at. Finally, they reach a friendly shore where they are welcomed and invited to share a feast, for it is Thanksgiving Day in America. They agree there is much to be thankful for. The text is very simple and the illustrations convey the mood of fear and uncertainty. This little book may bring tears to your eyes, and will definitely make you proud to be an American.

After the police come, a family is forced to flee their Caribbean island and set sail for America in a small fishing boat.

I really love this book. The illustrations are bright and fun. The story is very charming and my 5 yr. old found the true story behind it very fascinating. I highly recommend it for 2 to 5 year olds.

Just Ducky! 5 out of 5 stars.

We checked this one out of the library so many times I finally had to buy a copy. Excellent cut-paper illustrations, a great story, humorous text -- this is one book you won't mind reading over and over to the kiddos.

The Incredible Journey via small plastic bathtub toys 5 out of 5 stars.

If you were a man like David Wisniewski and you had just created the emotionally and physically exhausting Caldecott winning "Golem", (a book which deals with religious persecution and the very essence of what it means to be alive), it would be more than understandable if you wanted to follow that book up with one about a small yellow bathtub toy. Which is, of course, precisely what he did. While "Golem" was a vast creative epic that utilized his particularly original cut-paper technique to its best advantage, "Ducky" is a small clever story written by fellow Caldecott winner Eve Bunting and set through the eyes of a plastic toy on the high seas. It has emotional impact, beautiful illustrations, and a true story behind its tale. Altogether it makes for a delicious picture book.

On the title page we see large wooden create being lowered onto what can only be the deck of an ocean liner. Turn the page and the ship is silhouetted against a sky, followed closely by an impending storm. Our story begins. As the duck himself says right off the bat, "I am a yellow plastic duck and I am in great danger". With the horrible storm, the crate containing Ducky and his hundred some fellow toys is released into the violent sea. The crate breaks apart and suddenly the water is filled with yellow ducks, blue turtles, green frogs, and what looks to be red beavers. The duck experiences great fear, particularly when a passing shark (rendered in its pupil-less-many-toothed glory) attempts to devour a load of toys. The duck notes that the shark does not seem too much care for getting plastic caught in its teeth, "though we are guaranteed non-toxic". Days pass and all the toys separate in the waves. Our lone hero bobs alone, night and day, past icebergs, fish, and pelicans, until washing safely ashore. A boy locates the duck with glee (it seems many residents of this Alaskan town along the coast have been finding and recording the lost bathtub paraphernalia). At long last the duck returns with the boy to his home and is placed in a bubbly frothy bath, thereby, "fulfilling my destiny".

An author's note at the end records the 29,000 plastic toy animals that were washed off a ship in 1992 and how their arrival on the shores of North America aided scientists who wished to learn more about currents, winds and tides. But even if this were some inspired flight of fancy on the part of the writer, it would still make for a fabulous tale. Ducky has an odd wry way of speaking. He notes his predicament with great emotion and intensity. Feelings that kids reading this book will readily appreciate and understand. From the scary notion of being lost to the final arrival in a safe place, there's a lot to identify with in this book. Wisniewski really brings this story fully to life, though. His shark is a nasty frighteningly realistic critter o' the sea. But I was really taken with the beautiful shots in the book. There's an aerial point of view of Ducky from above red, yellow, beige clouds in what can only be the early stages of twilight. His sea is a beautiful pulsating series of blue and white images. Some artists work with cut-paper and make you wonder how they managed to create their elegant scenes. Others take this one step farther and let you forget that what you're looking at wasn't created by a computer or drawn by hand. Wisniewski does both.

You're going to find quite a few rubber-ducks-lost-at-sea books out there (Eric Carle's, "10 Little Rubber Ducks" comes to mind) but this is the best of the lot. A fine collaboration between two Caldecott winning heavyweights it has everything a good children's picture book should have. Danger, excitement, and a happy ending advocating cleanliness (amongst other things). This rubber ducky is truly the one.

Editorial Review:

When a violent ocean storm causes a crate holding assorted plastic tub toys -- including one resilient little duck -- to wash overboard, the course of Ducky's life alters drastically. This engaging story based on a real event includes an author's note.

A Good Lesson in Growing Up! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Little Bear loves his little boat, but to his dismay, one day finds that he's too big to fit into it. His mother explains how it's his destiny to get bigger while it's his boat's destiny to stay the same size. He finds a little bear to bequeath his little boat to, but on the condition that the little bear will find another little bear to give it to when he, himself, outgrows it. This is a very sweet story about growing up. I bought this story for my 4yr old to help him accept seeing his 2yr old brother using things that he'd outgrown. The illustrations and flow of the text are both great!

Editorial Review:

Little Bear loves his little boat. He rows it around Huckleberry Lake, fishing and dreaming. But then Little Bear begins to grow and grow, until one day he doesn't fit in his little boat anymore! All children who experience growing pains will appreciate Little Bear's predicament. And they will smile with satisfaction as the solution to his problem unfolds in simple, lyrical words and charming pictures from two award-winning picture-book creators.

The perfect book for the perfect day. 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I gave this book to my father for father's day. It tells the charming story of a young girl and the relationship she has with her father. She wants to spend Father's Day with her Dad doing all the things he loves. Instead they do the things she loves to do and like every good Dad he goes along and pretends they are his favorite things too. It seems like he's thinking, "without her I wouldn't be celebrating this day". Any father would love to read this book to his child and cherish it as a gift.

Editorial Review:

"I'm taking you out for Father's Day," Susie tells Dad. "First we'll go for lunch." "Good," Dad says. "May I drive?" "Certainly," Susie says. She chooses the restaurant, and pretty soon Dad can see that she's filled this special day with treats--treats for both of them! When they get back home, Mom's final surprise (that isn't really a surprise at all) is a perfect ending for the perfect day.

Editorial Review:

A brutal car accident that claimed the life of her best friend has left seventeen-year-old Catherine in a state of shock and severe depression. She longs to move forward with her life, but feels she can't until she is somehow assured of her friend's forgiveness. On a Christmas visit to her grandmother in Pasadena, a mysterious and handsome stranger approaches Catherine at church claiming that he can put her in touch with her dead friend.
Catherine is wary of the stranger's claims and his ghostly appearance but feels he may be the only key to escaping her past. She tells no one of the meeting but is approached by an elderly woman who warns her of the stranger's powers. The woman's teenage diary and eerie rumors surrounding other troubled girls who have disappeared from the church community leave Catherine fearful of the stranger's true intentions. She realizes she must find some way to confront this supernatural presence as well as the ghosts of her past.
A classic ghost story from one of Clarion's most distinguished authors. Eve Bunting brings a new edge to the genre of suspense by interweaving contemporary issues with sharp and frightful storytelling.

Too many monsters is empowerment for children! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

James Bernardin's illustrations in "too many monsters" are nothing short of AMAZING! I have never written a review before but I just had to on his work. The illustrations are mystifying! Vibrant and captivating! The expressions on the faces of the characters really do something to you as they leap off the page demanding your full attention. My daughter (age three) stops me from turning the page just so she can stare at the expressions drawn on the characters faces (I KNOW what she's looking at because I'm seeing what she's seeing but I can't put my finger on the magic!) I cannot find the words to express to anyone out there how awesome this book trully is Especially for the younger children. Eve bunting writes very "simply" to the younger reader, a story of a young boy getting tucked in for bed and what happens after that. Magical all across the board this book empowers children in a simple yet brilliantly imaginative way to laugh instead of fear what might lurk in the dark. My daughter has made me read this book five or more times each night and you know what? I myself REALLY ENJOY reading this over and over with her triumphantly celebrating with the characters of this book when its time for this family to take back whats thiers! JAMES BERNARDIN you have outdone yourself! Please include "this" family in another one of your books the expressions are PRICELESS and FULL OF LIFE! I'm buying!

Editorial Review:

A little boy has a bad case of the bedroom monsters. Who can he turn to for help? Now available in paperback, this delightful bedtime tale by Caldecott Award-winner Eve Bunting will reassure kids and delight their parents.

Because Alex came he couldn't go on a camping trip with his best friend, John Sun, because Alex wouldn't be able to be out in the wilderness alone. John Sun decided to leave for the summer. He was also suppose to be going to the movies with Pauline Genero, but Alex ruined that. One morning Brodie woke up early to take Alex down to the blackwater at the part where it was damned to make a pond. This pond was called Dikins pond and in the middle of it there was a big rock called the toadstool. He was going to teach alex how to swim. When they arrived at the pond Brodie saw Pauline, the girl he was suppose to go to the movies with, with another guy, Otis. Brodie became jelous and hid their towels in a hole. He than when out to the rock where they were sitting and started to pull at Pauline's legs. He thought they were coming after him so he swam as hard as he could to shore. When he arrived to the shore he saw Pauline and Otis rolling down the Blackwater. He tried to save them, but only injured his head. When the police arrived Alex said Otis pulled Pauline off the rock and said Alex tried to save them. They stuck with this lie for awhile. Soon Brodie starts recieving weird things like the towels rolled up from the whole. Pauline died and Otis was still missing and they thought Otis was still alive. Soon they received a paper that said tell. They found Otis dead. Somenody else must have saw him. Will they tell the police or will Brodie become so guilty that he fesses up. To find out read this book. This book is easily to get hooked on. It's a easy read and very suspensful. I would reccomend it to anyone to read.
