Everett Anderson's Goodbye 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is absolutely the best book out there for a young child who has lost a parent. Written by Lucille Cliffton in simple rhyme, it goes through the 5 stages of grief. As the last stage of grief is acceptance, it ends with "and no matter what happens when people die, love doesn't stop and neither will I." The illustrations of this young African American boy and his mother are charcoal line drawings ~~ beautifully illustrating the profound loss this child has suffered, affirming the loss and yet reassuring the reader that acceptance and peace will come.

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a simply written book about a little boy who goes through the five stages of grief after the death of his father. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the book still brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it. Lucille Clifton is an excellent author who uses simplicity with great beauty. This book is good for young children 3-5 who are trying to understand and deal with grief. I would definitely recommend this with no hesitation!

A great adventure for the young urban child, rural children may not get it 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

King Shabazz is an urban boy in early elementary school who has a profound disbelief in the concept of spring. When it is mentioned in his presence, he demands to see the evidence, saying, "Where is it at?" His disbelief is so great that he recruits his friend Tony Polito to accompany him on a search for spring. They wander the neighborhood, smelling the smells and going far beyond their usual turf.
Eventually, they see an abandoned car in a vacant lot and a strange noise is coming from it. As they conquer their fear and walk towards the car, they encounter some bright yellow flowers growing among the rubbish. When they reach the car, they discover a bird's nest containing a clutch of blue eggs, which prompts King to say, "Man it's spring." Fortunately, Tony's big brother spots them and escorts them back to familiar territory.
To the very young child, this is a great adventure, crossing the street all-alone and finding things they had never seen before. It is an adventure for the urban child, many rural children will find a bit silly.

Another Great Everett Anderson book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Everett's friend is being abused and Everett doesn't know how to help him. The author deals sensitively with a subject that is becoming all too common. A well written book.

Editorial Review:

A sensitive exploration of a difficult problem by an award winning author/illustrator team.

"One day in school, just out of the blue,"
Everett whispers, "Greg started to cry,
and I went over to ask him why

and he looked up and sighed,
'I can't tell you.'
And he had the saddest, saddest face
like he was lost in the loneliest place."

Everett Anderson doesn't know what to do when his friend Greg comes to school with bruises, or when Greg cries and can't explain what's wrong. Should Everett tell the teacher, or would that only make things worse for Greg? Everett's sister thinks maybe it's none of their business, but he can't stop worrying about his friend. Then, when Everett Anderson tells his mother, he opens a window of possibility.

This tender story perfectly evokes the confusion, concern--and eventual hope--one little boy feels in the face of a very difficult problem.

This book shares the thoughts and stories of young african american children. As the kids speak up you will here the palm of there hart speaking to you. There are just great stories some happy some sad and some tell you just how much different there lifestyle is from ours.the kids will take you to there world and express there heart.

Editorial Review:

When children give voice to their own feelings, the result can be magical. This touching and inspiring collection of poems by African-American children helps prove that point. Edited by Davida Adedjouma and lovingly illustrated by Gregory Christie, these 20 poems came out of a series of writing workshops with children who were encouraged to celebrate their lives, joys, influences and hopes. The results are pure poetry, honest, wise and encouraging: "Black is the color of some people/but people are different/differences are good because/no one else says the/same things as you." Not only will children find the poems interesting, they may just be inspired to explore their own feelings. All ages.

More Than a Lucky Stone 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely adore this book. I read it to my oldest daughter over 15 years ago and to my youngest daughter recently. It is a great night time read or simply a delightful story to transport one back to safe times of rememberance. The joy of having a Lucky Stone is one thing but Being a Lucky Stone is even cooler. Pick the book, find a stone and claim Yourself Lucky
