Ok book not great for a younger child 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I had a hard time finding a book to read to my daugher about her sibling on the way and finally decided to give this book a try. It is kinda outdated and has alot of words. It would be better for an older child but most of it went over the head of my 2 1/2 yr old. She likes looking at the pictures but there is not really a story to follow. If you need a book that talks about feelings and the logistics of what happens when a new baby joins your family then this book would be great. For us we just needed a book that talked about what being a big sister was and showed pictures of kids and their baby siblings

Editorial Review:

It's natural for children to be concerned about the arrival of a new baby at their house. Most big brothers and sisters feel loving and tender one minute, angry or jealous the next. With over forty vivid full-color photographs and a clear, supportive textby award-winning author Joanna Cole, this revised edition of a much-loved classic will prepare children for the ups and downs of having a new baby in the house.

"Should help small children sort out and deal with the turbulent mixed feelings that assail them when a new baby comes home." --Benjamin Spock, MD., author of Baby and Child Care

Excellent Source for any science teacher 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am a high school biology teacher. Since reading this book I have purchased 5 of the Magic School Bus Chapter Books. This book provides excellent scientific information and students of all ages enjoy. I had my 6 year old nephew read it, I read it, and one of my freshmen biology students read it. We all came to the same conclusion; we want to take a trip the aquarium and see the sharks firsthand for ourselves. I highly reccommend anyone with a child or a love for science to read this book.

Educational and exciting! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 5 year daughter and I recently finished reading this book. This series is a wonderful way for kids to learn about science. After reading this book, she asked to go to a local aquarium to see some sharks for herself. We can't wait to read the other books in the series.

Editorial Review:

What starts as a class trip to the aquarium ends in the depths of the ocean, where the class has to escape from the jaws of a great white shark. Ms. Frizzle teaches the class all about different shark species, including the goblin shark, the angel shark, and the enormous whale shark. The magic School Bus has never been so deep!

For much younger than listed 3 out of 5 stars.

Though the stories, jokes, and poems in this book are quite good, there is no way they are age appropriate for the older children in the 4-8 group where they are placed. I bought this for my 6 year old based on another review that said how wonderful this book was...I was disappointed. It is more appropriate for my 1 year old. There is little text in the book per page and the illustrations are ordinary rather than exceptional. If you want funny jokes and poems, try the Grin and Giggle Book, and if you really want funny stories, invest in the entire Frog and Toad collection for about the price of this single book.

A Nice Collection, but NOT for Beginners - a review of "Ready... Set... Read! 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm always fascinated by what people (apparently even educators) think of as a beginning reader. I think of a true beginner as one who is still sounding out and occasionally stumbling over simple words like: sat, is, and gives. A true beginner in my book also tires easily if there is too much text per page.

If this description fits your beginning reader, then I don't think this is the primer for you. The book is great --we really like it --but it's not a collection that a true beginner is going to come away from with a sense of accomplishment. It's just too hard.

For example, words you will find in this book are: gooey, idea, chocolate, melting, splattered, squirrel, heavens, noticed, beautiful, travels, spinning, everyone, telescope, throat, forehead, coughed and tongue. Having a child who is just about to turn 5 y.o. I can tell you that these are too difficult for him.

Another drawback is that several of the stories have too many words per page for new readers. The Frog and Toad story and the non-fiction piece are prime examples.

That said, if you sole aim is not to necessarily purchase a primer, I would advise you to check this book out. It has a good selection of stories, poems, jokes, pictogram thingies, and even a non-fiction piece about the solar system. Enough selection that you ought to be able to judge what sort of story your child might be drawn to.

Four Conditional Stars. [B+]. A very nice hardback book that offers some great selections such as 'Sheep in a Jeep' and 'Frog and Toad' and 'Little Bear'. Some of the poems are lame, but some are nice. The artwork is varied. The writing is varied. In general, a Very Good Read-aloud.

Not a true beginners primer. My estimate would be a book leveled at first to second graders.

Editorial Review:

A collection of stories, poems, and non-fiction for beginning readers, by such authors as Dr. Seuss, Else Minarik, and Arnold Lobel.

Better than some 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Adoption stories are so unique and individual that it is really difficult to buy a book based on someone else's experience and be able to use it to explain your own child's adoption experience. This one is better than some, in that it doesn't skirt or ignore the issue of the birthmother, however it also gets into some anatomical detail of reproduction and birth that are not necessary when providing your preschooler with the initial details of his or her adoption. Our son is 3 and we have put this away for a few years, it is definately not appropriate for him at this time.

The fact your child was adopted should not come as a shock to them at some later point in their lives, but the details and facts you give should be based on their age and stage of development. I think involving details of some mystery mother at an age before they are able to understand the biological facts of life is unnecessary.

Unless your child is ready to grasp the details of pregnancy and birth, look for another book to help explain their adoption.

Editorial Review:

Sam has a joyful story to tell, one completely her own, yet common to millions of families -- the story of how she was adopted. Most of all, it's a story about love. And in the end, Sam's story comes full circle, inviting young readers to share stories of how they were adopted.

A Review of the MSB's "Makes a Rainbow" 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Frizzle does it again! With her remarkable bus, silly wardrobe, and bag of tricks, she teaches the gang alot about light. This time she teaches using an amazing laser-powered pinball machine.

The kids can't wait to play -it is pinball afterall-but the problem is that Mr. Rule (the principal) is about to take the game away if they can't `win' a game. To win, the students must light up all six `colored eyes' at the back of the game. This requires that they split the incoming laser light and bounce the various frequencies/light colors around.

The children win, of course, but not before they learn about wavelength, prisms, and reflection and refraction.

Four Stars. These books are very educational, but they are not the easiest read-alouds. (I read them to my 3 and 5 year-olds anyway.) In this case, the topic is rather complex AND I would suggest that you use this book as a supplement to the Video.

**See the `Search Inside' Excerpt page for an example of reading level. Certainly young children will not be able to read them.

Editorial Review:

Ms. Fizzle and her class learn about colors and light inside a pinball machine.

A Necessity for Learning the Water Cycle 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book was fantastic. I had looked everywhere for a book to use to help teach my third grade class about the water cycle. This book was perfect. The children enjoyed the illustrations and the amusement of the distortion of the body in evaporation and condensation. This book covered all the bases. It discussed evaporation, condensation, and precipitation and how they all work together to create the continuous water cycle. This book is a must for guardians or teachers dealing with third through fifth graders.

Learn About the Water Cycle, Purification and Conservation 5 out of 5 stars.

"Suddenly the whole bus rose into the air. We felt cool and heavy. We were turning into water!" -- From the book

In case you're not familiar with Scholastic series of Magic School Bus books, they are books which are based on the animated TV series--which are, incindentally, based on the ORIGINAL books written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. (Whew!)

In The Magic School Bus: Wet All Over, Ms. Frizzle, an unusual teacher, and her class go on an exciting and bizarre field trip (as usual!). This time, they turn into water droplets...which then turn into water vapor...which then condenses to clouds...and then they begin to "rain"!

"Go with the flow, class!", Ms. Frizzle merrily advises.

Then, the kids go over a waterfall (water always flows to the lowest spot, "the Friz" observes) and into the ocean. The sun warms them, they evaporate--and the cycle begins again. They eventually make it to a reservoir, which leads to a water purification plant. The kids learn about alum (it sponges up dirt) and how water becomes safe for drinking.

This particular book is less cheesy than most (in that it doesn't have lots of groan-inducing word-play), and it also features a great environmental message from Ms. Frizzle at the end. The last part of it says:

"Although there is lots of water in the world, it is not always where we want it when we want it. Only a tiny part of the Earth's water is drinkable. Our drinkable water is a precious resource. We need to borrow it only as we need it, and to return it to the water cycle in the best condition we can."

I use the Magic School Bus books, videos and DVDs to supplement science class (I homeschool), and they never disappoint with their down-to-Earth approach to science concepts. This particular book is especially great for teaching water conservation in addition to the water cycle.

Editorial Review:

Experience the earth's water cycle first hand as Ms. Frizzle's class rises into the air, forms a rain cloud and drizzles down upon earth, just like rain!

really good 4 out of 5 stars.

We liked the story. It was fast-paced as all the Magic School Bus books are. The subject was well covered, lots of information on how germs harm the body and how our natural defenses help conquer them.

Editorial Review:

When Ralphie comes down with a bad cold, he is unable to host the Frizzle News Network television show on health, but Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus save the day when they take a ride through Ralphie's germ-infested body.

Answers children's questions 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Joanna Cole (I Am a Big Brother, I Am a Big Sister) has created yet another great book for sharing with young children. Directly addressing toddlers and preschool age children, Cole tells about pregnancy and childbirth. Using terms such as uterus, umbilical cord, and breast, and with illustrations of a child inside the womb, Cole and Chambliss have created a wonderful book for parents to share with very, young children, especially when a new baby is expected. Additional information on answering children's questions about birth is provided at the back of the book.

Best preschooler's book I've seen on the topic 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is such a great way for preschoolers to learn where they came from and gives parents a way to tell their child's birth story. We interject specific happenings from our son's birth story and he just loves it. It was the perfect book to read to our oldest son when we were pregnant with our second child as it helped him understand the process of what was happening/going to happen now that there was another baby inside of mommy. He was only 2 years old and he comprehended it all through the simple language and adorable pictures! Perfect book!

Editorial Review:

Isn't it amazing that you were once inside Mommy?

With clear inviting text and lively illustrations, Joanna Cole and Maxie Chambliss introduce young children to the concepts of pregnancy and childbirth--from the time they begin as one tiny cell to the joyful moment when their parents welcome them into the world.

I ENJOY THIS ONE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE KIDS DO TOO 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is not a bad beginning reader and it is full of very fascintating information about sharks and shark life. The illustrations are quite good and of course hold the children's interest from cover to cover. The text is simple and quite easy to follow and understand. I can see why there might be some concerns over portions of the book. Yes, the book dose address the fact that sharks, for the most part, are preditors and I can see why the illustrations might upset some (although I feel it will probably the adults rather than the children who will be upset. Kids are so pragmatic these days about such things). I also have to agree to parts of the one negative review this book received in that I too felt the author was being a bit cavalier as to the probability of the survival of sharks all over the world. As the reviewer pointed out, this is one animal that is quickly getting into trouble in a big way. Perhaps I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the necessity of keeping these wonderful creatures with us. Overall though, I find the book to be quite useful and as I pointed out, the kids all love it.

Editorial Review:

"This introduction to sharks keeps within a first-grade reading level without sacrificing information. Cole tells about different kinds of sharks, and facts on their food consumption and innumerable teeth. The text makes clear that few sharks eat people and that sharks come in a variety of shapes and sizes."-- Booklist.
