For Older Reluctant Readers, Too 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I wouldn't normally bother to add a review when so many others have already written reviews, but I do have some noteworthy information for people considering buying this book. I'm a teacher advisor for a large public school program serving kids in grades K-12 who are out of regular school due to medical conditions. I have to tell you--this book is a HIT! It's an easy reader, but it's not babyish at all. I've had kids in grades K-8 like it, including middle school kids who are poor readers (often for ESL reasons). The story is just scary enough to be intriguing, but it has a happy ending; there's also an excellent theme of how kindness pays and a fantastic chase scene at the end. As a fairy tale connoisseur, I'm convinced that Baba Yaga--from the Russian tradition--is THE coolest, scariest witch ever. (For a longer variation of this story, see Baba Yaga and Vasilissa the Brave, retold by Marianna Mayer and illustrated by K.Y. Craft.) I only wish there were more stories told this simply and effectively, with this kind of broad appeal.

When a terrible witch vows to eat her for supper, a little girl escapes with the help of a mirror and comb given to her by the witch's cat and dog.

A great introduction to ancient China 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my first-grade son, who is a huge Magic School Bus fan, but usually not all that interested in social studies. He found this book very interesting, and we have re-read it many times.

The book is in a larger format than the original Magic School Bus series, which leave more room for all of the sidebar explanations that typify these books. Cole and Degen explain processes, like growing rice and making silk, that are easy for kids to follow, and may teach the adults a thing or two. A common thread through the whole book is a list of things that the ancient Chinese invented before the West, another point that may teach adults something new. The plot is a little silly, but it made my son and I giggle.

All in all, it's great fun, and a nice way to introduce kids to Chinese culture. Teachers could read it to a class, then delve more deeply into subjects that they want to pursue.

Editorial Review:

Is it magic? Ms. Frizzle, Wanda, and Arnold simply duck under the dragon at the local Chinese New Year's parade, and they are mysteriously whisked back in time to ancient China! They arrive in a village where the farmers are in trouble. The Friz and friends vow to go to the capital to get the emperor's help. On their journey, they learn how silk is made, travel on the Grand Canal, and see the Great Wall under construction. But will they fulfill their mission to help the farmers?

Cole and Degen relay a bounty of facts with charm and humor as they bring the majesty of imperial China to life.

Entertaining but Outlandish 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My four-year-old liked this story, and I will consider buying others, but she did not 'love' it. The kids-turning-into-penguin plot, which involves kids turning temporarily into penguins, did not sit well with me. In addition, there were too many characters to remember or care about. The writing style was not entertaining and seemed choppy to me. My daughter and I prefer the Geronimo StiltonMysterious Cheese Thief (Geronimo Stilton) series -- the pictures and 'funny' text really make that series interesting to pre-schoolers. On the positive side, there was educational material in the book. If a child has a strong interest in penguins or Antarctica, this might be a good choice.

Editorial Review:

Ms. Frizzle whisks her students away on a ³cool² trip to Antarctica, where they learn all about the South Pole and come face to face with playful penguins and colossal icebergs. But when the kids are magically changed into real penguins, they need Ms. Frizzle¹s help to solve their penguin puzzle.

How to think like a scientist 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Usually the magic school bus books offer excellent explanations of natural phenomena, but this one goes a little further and explains how scientists think and work using famous scientists as examples. Thanks to this book, my daughter understands what a hypothesis is and that it must be tested. Her favorite is the explanation of how Pasteur devised an experiment that proved bacteria in blood cause disease, not just the blood itself. Other scientists presented include Galileo, Newton, the Curies, and Einstein. All this in the fun, Frizzled manner of the magic school bus series.

Editorial Review:

What do Galileo, Isaac Newton, Louis Pasteur, and Albert Einstein have in common? They've all ridden on the Magic School Bus, of course! Ms. Frizzle is back in action and she has a mission: her students need science fair projects - and fast. What better way to get ideas than to learn from some of the all-time greats? The class heads to the Walkerville Science Museum to see the exhibit on GREAT SCIENTISTS THROUGH THE AGES, where, suddenly, Galileo comes to life! He is about to make a great discovery, but he needs a ride home. Thank goodness Ms. Frizzle knows the way! (cont.)

This book has more 'ups' than 'downs' 4 out of 5 stars.

Since children love 'The Magic School Bus' television show, this book about sinking and floating will be sure to grab the attention of those inquisitive young minds! It serves as a great asset to a science classroom, or your own home library. Although it is kind of lengthy, I highly recommend it for insurance of complete understanding of the sinking and floating process. Happy reading!

The magic bus series is very enjoyable. As swimming season started we learned about sinking and floating. I know he gets it when he tells me what we have to do to make things sink or swim in the pool.

Great Book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book! My son loves all of the Magic School Bus books. The characters are fun and interesting. There is lots of good scientific information.

Great Book!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is great! I got this book when I was 4 3/4 and I am now 13 1/2 years old and it's still wonderful!!! It shows wonderful examples of hieroglyphs and demotic writing!!! It shows you detailed pictures of an Egyptian market, scribes house, and tells you how mummys were made!!! After reading I ( to my mom's extreme annoyance) turned our basement in to an Egyptian town, and you can imangine what I went as that Halloween!!

My 2nd graders love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Doing a unit on Ancient Egypt this Summer, and was THRILLED to see this book at the library. I wish they had made a video too! My kids love it. Ms. Frizzle is her usual self sans the class. She's taking a vacation in Egypt during Summer break but just can't let go of being a teacher. She jumps out of the plane on the way there and the other passengers become her students. They go back in time thanks to Ms. Frizz's Time Travel Watch. Great illustrations, captions. Very historically faithful and fun.

Editorial Review:

In this exciting new book about ancient Egypt, Ms. Frizzle dives into the arena of social studies with the same zest she has always shown for science. After joining a tour group, the Friz is soon the one in charge. She and the group parachute into the past, where they help build a pyramid and witness the making of a mummy. With Ms. Frizzle as a guide, readers will be eager to discover the enchanting history of Egypt.

Joanna Cole succeeds again 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

As someone with training in folklore, I always trust a book with Joanna Cole's name on it. This book does a very good job of showing (rather than desscribing) the actions and provides the words and music. As it is folklore, you will find some of the fingerplays or action rhymes from your childhood as well as new additions to your repetoire. As I have come to expect, I believe that the publishing company has underestimated the age range for which the book is appropriate ... listen to your young friends after their first camping trip with the cub scouts, bluebirds etc. and you will find that even at that ages children are teaching children some of these plays.

Editorial Review:

A companion to the best-selling Anna Banana: 101 Jump-Rope Rhymes, here is a collection of nearly forty fingerplays and action rhymes that have been chanted, sung, and enjoyed for generations. Children and their parents can join the eentsy, weentsy spider in its climb up the waterspout, pretend to pound in a nail while singing "The Hammer Song," and tip their bodies over for "I'm a Little Teapot."

Included are such favorites as "The Wheels on the Bus," "This Old Man," "This Is the Church," and "Where Is Thumbkin?" as well as such lesser-known rhymes as "My Hat" and "Birthday Cake." So say them, sing them, act them out -- action rhymes are fun for everyone!

A Great Beginning for the That Difficult Talk 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Every parent dreads that moment. You know the one I mean- that moment when your child begins to ask about S-E-X. This book is a wonderful aid to help you through it.

Most experts suggest only giving as much information as a child is ready for, and answering the questions as they come up. This book is wonderful for the beginning stages of this process when your child wants to know where babies come from, but is neither ready for nor interested in the details of conception. This book has beautiful pictures of babies in utero in various stages of development and gently discusses the development of the fetus, the birth of the baby (in a non-graphic but honest way), and the excitement of welcoming a new life into the world.

I bought this for my eight year old, but it is gentle and non-graphic enough that my 3 year old loves it, as well. In fact, I wish I'd had this book when I was pregnant with my younger child. This would be a wonderful book for expectant mothers to share with their older children as they prepare for a new sibling.

There are other books out there that will answer more advanced questions in a more graphic way. This book is not going to answer everything, but it is the perfect book to use for beginning the journey of educating your children about reproduction, and it is written in such a way that parents can easily discuss their own beliefs with their children.

Editorial Review:

It is natural for young children to be curious about where they come from. Using vivid full-color photographs and a clear, straightforward text, this comprehensive book answers the questions they have about how an egg cell grows to become a baby, how a baby lives inside its mother's uterus, and how a baby is born.

Good Choice as a Read Out Loud Story! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book has adorable illustrations which make it easy for younger children to follow along the storyline of Norma Jean (a Kangaroo)who learns the hard way that there is a time and place for everything. The easy to read format makes it a good choice for beginning readers. Also, adults will like this story as it is just the right length for a bedtime story.

Norma Jean, Jumping Bean 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Norma Jean, Jumping Bean By: Joanna Cole is a superior book. The story is about how a kangaroo named Norma starts to make her friends upset due to her constant jumping. So, she stops jumping all together. Then one day at school, Norma's teacher says that there will be a field day at school. After that, everyone at school signs up for all of their favorite events, except for Norma. That day, everyone at school now wants Norma to jump again. Will Norma begin to jump again, and will she sign up for field day?
I would rate the book 5 stars out of 5 stars. When I read the book, it made me curious of what would happen next, and it never got boring. Even though this book is for younger ages, I still enjoy the book as a 7th grader!

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "Kangaroo child Norma Jean loves to jump. The problem is that her jumping gets out of hand, causing accidents and some ruffled feelings among her friends, and Norma stops her jumping entirely. But when the school's field-day games come up, Norma Jean is coaxed back into action long enough to win ribbons. Light, popular fare for beginning readers."--Booklist.
