Engaging and Colorful Summary of Medieval Castles 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This oversized paperback book has been a great addition to our collection about the Middle Ages, mainly because my kids (2nd & 3rd grade) love it and it is a pretty good summary of what they've learned.

The book defines a castle, labels the parts of a castle, gives some idea of what castle life was like for those who lived in and around the castle (peasants, craftsmen, servants, nobility), shows how a castle was attacked and defended, and describes a Great Hall feast after the battle.

While I consider the pages to be a bit busy - there is a narrative Ms. Frizzle travel-back-in-time story, there is comic-strip style commentary relevant to the narrative story (which the kids find terribly funny), and there are Q&As at the bottom of the page - the children find it very appealing. They pull this book out to read on their own.

Editorial Review:

With her reluctant student, Arnold, the Friz slips through a mysterious trap door -- and ends up in the Middle Ages! There, they explore a medieval castle, meeting the people who live there and learning about everyday life within the castle walls. When the castle is threatened by invaders, Arnold and the Friz don chain mail to lead the defense. They repel the invaders just in the nick of time, then they joust and feast before returning to the 21st century. With their careful research and trademark wit, Cole and Degen introduce the many facets of medieval life.

The best teaching tool on sharing I have found 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son is 2, and Joanna Cole's books have been very helpful to his development. He has loved "I'm a Big Brother" and "My Big Boy Potty," both of which helped him with big transitions in his young life. So after trying a not-so-good sharing book called "I Can Share," by Karen Katz, I decided to see if Joanna Cole had written anything better. Sure enough, she had!

This book is developmentally appropriate for a child who can understand simple story books. My son is a bit advanced for 2, but I think this book would be good for any child between 2 and 4. It features a little boy who is having a play date at his house, and addresses the importance of sharing, taking turns, and playing together cooperatively. It is a happy, friendly story with nice drawings and kid friendly, simple language. My son loves it, and it's really helped him learn how to behave better at play dates. I am forever a fan of these terrific books!

A great introduction to evolution for kids as young as 4 5 out of 5 stars.

We have found that the typical interest in dinosaurs has a way of branching into territories less well-charted for the preschool and elementary set: extinction and death (and onto religious beliefs), geology and evolution (and onto astronomy and earth science), to name a few. This book, along with Life Story by Virginia Lee Burton, Time Tunnel by Arthur John L'Hommedieu, and From Dinosaurs to Dodos by Don Lessem has helped us learn and teach about evolution in a way our son understands and we enjoy. Better yet, these are all titles that remain useful across the early years, suitable for learners at many levels of knowledge.

a strong evolutionary book for the primary years 5 out of 5 stars.

It is sad that Joanna Cole's "Evolution: The Story of How Life Developed on Earth" is out-of-print. It is tragic since the book is so well done and at the same time it fills such a badly needed gap. The gap that needs filling is of course the lack of materials on evolution for young people. Any book store or library is bound to have children's books that tell the origins of life from a religious perspective. It's a different story when it comes to the availability of books on evolution. In any case, young people are familiar with fossils, so that's where the author begins. From there, the book explains how simple cells eventually changed into humans. Cole goes into detail when explaining the jump between fish to amphibians. Complex constructs are broken down into easily digestible ideas. The book is very well written for a third grade reading level. While the book moves quickly, some pages feature additional material that elaborate the technical aspects of the process. While the text is strong, it is Aliki's illustrations that make this a great book. Since the book does not feature photographs, it has that warm and fuzzy feel that can only come from an illustrated picture book. The work of Richard Dawkins will impress upon anyone that the field of evolutionary biology is always changing. That written, Cole's 1987 book is still accurate. While out-of-print, multiple used copies are available through Amazon's marketplace sellers for very reasonable prices.

Editorial Review:

Describes, using evidence found in fossil layers, how one-cell organisms evolved into complex plants and animals.

I read a good book called The Magic School Bus Gets All Dried Up. The author of the Magic School bus is Joanna Cole. My favorite character is Ms. Frizzle. Ms. Frizzle is the type of teacher I would like to have because she is energetic and fun. I think I would learn alot of stuff if I were in her class because of all those field trips they go on. This is an educational book for children because there is alot of information you can learn. Sometimes they go to the zoo, beach, and other places. My favorite part of the book is when the bus shrinks into a small size so the class can have a closer look at things. These books are also a tv show. This is why I like this book, so go out and read it.

Editorial Review:

When Phoebe wonders how desert animals survive apparently without food or water, Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus take the entire class on a very hot, very informative field trip.

Loved by my children and my friend's children 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Both this and I'm a Big Brother are well loved by my kids and all of the friends' children we've given them to. When my son gets upset with his sister, he runs to his big brother book and opens it to the page "Mommy loves me, daddy loves me . . . "

Great book! 4 out of 5 stars.

Great sibling book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best board book I've found for introducing the big sister concept to my 2 year old. My daughter loves books, and this one keeps her interest without overwhelming her.

Editorial Review:

Warm, loving pictures accompany this upbeat look at how a family grows when a new baby comes home. A companion volume to I'm a Big Brother.

Kitchen Chemistry Fizzes 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When their inimitable school bus goes on the fritz (or should I say, "frizz"?,) the students get worried: this is one field trip they don`t want to miss. They`re trying to give their unique teacher a surprise birthday party and need to get to the bakery for the cake. When they finally reach their destination, the unstable bus suddenly shrinks, with everyone in it, to the size of a moth. They dodge the baker`s fly swatter and Ms Frizzle while using kitchen chemistry to get the job done. My boys and I miss the volume of information and mini "reports" of the original series, but they still learn and have fun at the same time. They have a new respect for cooking, as edible chemistry. And the baking soda experiment at the back of the book is a rainy day standby in our household: we love the fizz from the Frizz!

Editorial Review:

When the class tries to bake a cake for Ms. Frizzle's birthday, they wind up inside it and have some delicious fun learning all about mixtures and reactions that occur when ingredients are combined. TV tie-in.

Very nice book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our 20 month old son calls this the "Brother Book" and goes and gets it off the shelf for us to read it to him. As most of the reviews already say, this is a sweet book with a friendly approach to the impending life change. We have made all of the characters into ourselves, calling the boy in the book by our son's name. I also show him pictures of myself pregnant with him and then what he looked like after he was born and I think that between the book and the photos our son is beginning to understand that there is a new baby on the way. Certainly that something is going on in my tummy.

I was surprised by how big this book is (about 15" tall). I expected something smaller. Also, we never actually get to the end of the book as we get hung up on the ice cream at the park and get sidetracked to the freezer for ice.

Editorial Review:

The author/artist creators of How I Was Adopted present this child's-eye view of family life, deftly describing the joy of welcoming a new sibling into the family. A companion volume to I'm a Big Sister.
