A good story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would recommend this book, it is an enjoyable story of the Nativity, and well written. The drawings are nice to look at for children and adults.

Editorial Review:

Across the great desert the caravan follows the eastern star, in search of the newborn king. And at the rear young Ameer trails sadly behind. What gift, he wonders, can one so poor possibly give? Certainly nothing that might compare with the fine tributes of a merchant, or the gold, frankincense, and myrrh of kings. Not even Ameer’s beloved dog Ra can give him any comfort. But in Bethlehem they find a king like none before. And to everyone’s astonishment, though Ameer has no jewels or marvels to present, his gift of the heart outshines them all.

Floyd Cooper’s glowing artwork captures the quiet brilliance of the first Christmas story with renewed beauty. This unique telling of the Nativity, as experienced through the eyes of a child, will warm the heart with the true spirit of the holiday.

The Absolutely Wonderful Meet Danitra Brown 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

As a teacher for many years I have read and shared hundreds of books with students. This one is exceptional. Last year, desperate to really reach my third grade, low-achieving, inner city students, I looked through some books that I had put away. MEET DANITRA BROWN was among them, but for some reason I never read it before that moment. I took it to school the next day, hoping the children would enjoy the book, but not daring to hope for more. This powerfully poignant book elicited dialogue from my students as well as written responses that I didn't know was possible. What a motivator! Just because I taught third graders, please do not doubt the power of the text to transcend any age. The older a person the more they will be able to bring to the text. I would love to use this book with a group of inner city high school students. The rhythm and punch of the poetry(no turn-off to boys or girls at all)pulls the listener/reader in. The illustrations are icing on the (tough) cake of life. The lessons and morals within Nikki Grimes' language are unforgettable. I cannot say enough about the quality of this book except this: Fabulous!

Editorial Review:

This spirited collection of poems introduces young readers to Danitra Brown, the most splendiferous girl in town, and her best friend, Zuri Jackson. "The poignant text and lovely pictures are an excellent collaboration, resulting in a look at touching moments of universal appeal."--School Library Journal.

A Beautiful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The eye-catching illustrations and the beautiful use of language makes this book a 'must have' for every classroom in America.

This story is about a young girl named Jolie who lived during the Civil Rights Era. Her town's battle to educate their children is a touching story that emphasizes the value of education.

For teachers, this book presents a social studies lesson about why education was so important to Jolie's town and how the experience connects to the educational opportunities students have today.

This book is a very valuable resource for all grades.

Editorial Review:

Jolie has a lot to be scared about since the new Freedom School teacher, Annie, came to town. Bricks thrown through windows in the dead of night, notes filled with hate, and now a fire has burnt down the church where Annie was supposed to start teaching tomorrow! Without the church, how can she possibly teach Jolie and the other townspeople about black poets and artists, historians and inventors? Unless the people themselves fight back.

In this triumphant story based on the 1964 Mississippi Freedom School Summer Project, Amy Littlesugar and Floyd Cooper come together to celebrate the strength of a people, and the bravery of one young girl who didn't let being scared get in her way.

Enjoyable for all generations 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

An evening stroll engenders an unexpected friendship between an elderly woman, and a young girl. The elderly lady (Miz Berlin) recounts her childhood through beautifully creative stories which capture the imagination of the young girl and further ignites her curiosity about her elderly friend. The book's soft and poignant illustrations reveal the innocent spirit of the young girl's imaginings and gently draws the reader into the fantasy.

I think adults and children - young girls especially - will enjoy reading Miz Berlin Walks. It is a tender, touching story that should be shared amongst all generations.

Editorial Review:

Every evening, old Miz Berlin walks around Mary Louise's long block, talking to herself. One day, the girl follows Miz Berlin, and finds that she's telling stories. And they're wonderful stories-about feathers falling from the sky, hurricanes of years past, and even her own birth. Every evening, Mary Louise walks with Miz Berlin, absorbing her tales. And when Miz Berlin can no longer walk, she leaves the girl stuffed full of stories to tell.

"This poignant book conveys through simple words the power of stories to build bridges between two very different people."-Booklist

"Yolen is pitch-perfect in her delivery of this tender tale."-Publishers Weekly

Good Introduction to Kwanza for Children 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a good introduction to Kwanza for children and yes adults too. It explains the meaning of Kwanza, The symbols, and the terminolgy associated with this cultural festival.

Imani 5 out of 5 stars.

Imani's Gift At Kwanza tells the story of how a Grandmother helps her grandchild understand Kwanzaa while braiding her hair- a typical ritual that many African Americans girls experience every day. I liked the way the grandmother used the symbols of the red, black, and green to describe what Kwanzaa meant to her. In other words, Kwanzaa is an African American Holiday that means something different to everybody.
The Kwanzaa Coloring Book

Editorial Review:

The Kwanzaa celebration begins on December 26 and lasts for seven days. During Kwanzaa, African Americans remember their ancestors and celebrate the values that hold their communities together.

Walking with Pride 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This story is so moving. Showing hardships, love, and finding acceptance. It tells of an Afician child learning about his history and walking tall as a man. It was very moving, the pictures were soft and had a texture of warmth. I would highly recommend it for reading.

Editorial Review:

Young Langston Hughes was a dreamer. He dreamed about heroes like Booker T. Washington, who was black just like him. When he heard the clackety-clack of train wheels, he dreamed about the places it had been. But most of all, he dreamed about having a happy home. And so, one day, he began turning those dreams into beautiful prose. As he did, he discovered where his home really was--in the words and rhythms of his poetry that reached people all over the world. The beloved Langston Hughes comes to life in a book for poets, dreamers, children and adults --anyone who has ever thought of what home means to them. Teachers looking for a good way to introduce youngsters to this prominent poet will find this book to be an excellent accompaniment to his work. --School Library Journal Like Hughes' poetry, the power of Cooper's story is that it confronts sadness even as it transcends it. --Booklist His text is as inviting as his illustrations. --The New York Times Book Review

Learning About Africa... 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

How do you answer the questions about African history for an inquisitive, young mind? My 6-year old son wanted to know about Africa, where African people came from and about our origins as African-Americans. This book not only illustrates African culture and its people, but it is an early reader that he can understand and read with me or on his own. African Beginnings offers a colorful preview into the beginning of African tribes cultures and knowledge and capabilities in a way that a child can understand.

Editorial Review:

From the ancient kingdom of Kush, whose black pharaohs ruled Egypt for nearly a century, to the sixteenth-century empire of the Kongo, whose emperor was so powerful he was able to halt the trade in slaves for a number of years, the African continent rangwith a series of glorious civilizations that have had a lasting impact on the world's history, and on American culture. James Haskins and Floyd Cooper have won numerous awards for their books for young people, including several Coretta Scott King Honor awards. This groundbreaking book is their first collaboration. Index. Bibliography. All ages.

Consultants on this book were Dr. John Henrik Clarke, noted scholar of black history, and Dr. Enid Schildkrout, curator of anthropology, The American Museum of Natural History.

A wonderful book that brought tears to my eyes 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This heartwarming book tells the story of a little girl whose grandfather passed away. The lovely pictures combine with the poetic words to convey the message that our loved ones live on in our memories. What a beautiful book to read to any child, but especially one who has lost a loved one.

Editorial Review:

Now that Grandpa's gone, Sarah tries to remember what he used to say about the garden. Like us, he would tell her, a part of it never dies. Everything and everyone goes on and on. But Sarah feels very sad, even though Grandma and all the relatives are with her, sharing stories and hugs. How can life go on without Grandpa?

As summer slips into fall, Grandma and Sarah share a rich garden harvest-and their sweet, sweet memories of Grandpa. The stories and memories of loved ones, Sarah learns, are what keep everything and everyone going on and on.

This spare and beautiful picture book balances sadness and mourning with the comforting notion of the continuity of all life.

Pulling the Lion's Tail 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son (age 7) brought this book home from library day at school. We read it together and while I think the lesson of the story might have been lost on him, I don't believe it would be lost on children who face the difficulties of negotiating new mom's, dad's, foster parents, etc. I work with children that have emotional problems and the issue of acceptance (giving and getting) in step and foster families can be dealt with powerfully and sensitively with this book.

Read This Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very good and highly recommend it to teachers who have children from Ethiopia or any other African country in their classroom. They will find an appreciation for their country or continent in the reading of this story. Many times Americans tend to put down the African continent and dissolve it into stereotypes. Kids from Africa need support that where they come from is appreciated and that they are welcome in the US too.

Editorial Review:

Promising that he will show her how to gain the affection of her new stepmother, Almaz's grandfather tells her to bring him a handful of hair from the tail of a lion, in a folktale set in Ethiopia.
