Love it 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2 year old son is obsessed with trains - he loves this book. It is very short and the pictures are well drawn. This books shows the difference between a hopper car and a box car, etc so now when we see a real train he can tell me what kind of cars they are.

Freight Train/ Tren carga 5 out of 5 stars.

My oldest son loved this book. It was his favorite when he was little. It builds on vocabulary; you can count the cars, name the colors, and look at different scenarios. I learned a lot about trains by reading this book to them. I am raising my children bilingual and when I found it in English and Spanish I knew I had to get it for them. It also helped me remember the words in Spanish, which I had forgotten. I must have for any child that likes trains. Donald Crews again has delighted us with a masterpiece.

Wonderful early childhood book. 5 out of 5 stars.

Freight Train/Tren de cargaSimple words with simple images. You can hear the "click clack" of the train coming down the track, the chugging sound of the steam engine, and the sound of the horn as it approaches and then moves away. My daughter loved this book before she could even say the words.

Editorial Review:

"Clear bright illustrations show all the cars of a train bringing the reader the excitement of movement through day and night, country and city."--Booklist.

Train lovers book! This one is great! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love Donald Crews' books and this one is top notch! My four year old son loves trains. He has listened to this one so many times he has memorized the text. Great pictures and easy text plus the train sounds printed in text throughout the book make this one perfect for children. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

high drama for young children! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

One of the things I love about Shortcut is that it gives young children a chance to be scared/tense (like adults enjoying John Grisham or a suspenseful movie) in a way that isn't like to keep them awake later! I used to teach four-year-olds, and, if read with expression, this book keeps them on the edge of their seats!

Donald Crews' relating of an actual childhood experience is powerful -- they decided to take the shortcut home -- over the train tracks. What happens when they realize a train is coming?

Editorial Review:

The train tracks ran right by Bigmama's house in Cottondale, and the children were warned to stay off the tracks. But one night they were late, and the tracks were a shortcut, so they started off. And when there was no turning back, they heard the train coming.

This book can be used with upper-elementary aged kids too! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book to use in patterning, multiplication, and creative thinking! I use the book in my classroom in so many ways, with children up to third grade! We read it, then make up our own "Math Riddles" to put into our own class book. Example, Three fish had four fins each, with eight dots on each fin. How many fish? How many fins? How many dots altogether?

Each Orange Had 8 Slices: A Counting Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Cute counting book with colorful illustrations. Gives 3 sets of numbers and asks 3 questions in each "section." Better than average. I would recommend this one for K and 1st grade, as well as teachers and parents.

Math and Fruit 5 out of 5 stars.

This entertaining book is a good for young cildren to learn math. This book relates to math by giving math problams and then ask the child to answer them. This book can also help a child in their reading.
Even for an 8th grader like myself it is very interesting.

Editorial Review:

If each orange has 8 slices and each slice has 2 seeds, how many seeds are there in all? You'll have fun wether you multiply, add or count your way through the math puzzles hiding in the world all around you.

In this companion volume to How Many Snails?, dynamic illustrations and appealing words combine to introduce beginning math concepts and reinforce visual literacy.

I have used this book for years. I lost my copy and am so glad to have it back! Children love to find and count all the dots. Then we make our our dot book!

Cute for learning to count 5 out of 5 stars.

Very basic pictures which work wonderfully for my class of 3 year olds. It shows black dots creating many different pictures - eyes for a fox, wheels on a train, coins in a piggy bank; each page adds one more. Great for counting.

The book Ten Black Dots I discovered through a discussion group. I'm happy I bought the book! With a little imagination, there is a lot of activities one can do with pre-k and kindergarten children. I'm ready for the sequel!

What can THEY do with ten black dots? 5 out of 5 stars.

Great for your Kindergarten classroom. The book is simply different illustrations of pics you can make with black dots. We use black circle stickers (very cheap) and give each child 10. The class book that follows is a hit in the classroom library!

Editorial Review:

First published in 1968, Ten Black Dots is a counting book, a book of simple rhymes, and a book of everyday objects.

Please learn to spell CALVES properly before publishing a book! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

It is $10 wasted for me because my younger son tore the cover into 3 pieces the first time he got his hands on it, and before I had a chance to look through all the pages. Yes, it was that durable! This book went to the bin a week ago when my older son started sounding out words and we didn't want him to get the wrong start. Can't someone spellcheck a book before it is published? I'm surprised that noone has caught that mistake in the 4 years since it was published. Shame on the author and the publisher!

Editorial Review:

Hop on board and see what's inside the freight train! Slide apart the sturdy pages of this unusual board book to reveal the contents of the cars. The refrigerator car keeps apples, peaches, and pears cold and fresh, while the tender carries coal that burns in the fire box, and--everyone's favorite--the caboose holds the train crew that helps deliver the freight. A continuous track runs through the book, with connecting brightly colored train cars. An appealing concept, executed simply and pleasingly, Inside Freight Train can't miss with the train-loving masses. Caldecott Honor winner Donald Crews (Truck and Freight Train) has a way with heavy machinery and young readers. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

Toddler favorite 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is very popular in our house, getting my son to agree to story time (and thus the inevitable nap or bed time that follows) when he is in full fight mode. My two year old loves this book! I would give it five stars based on his love for it except for the fact that there are times that Mommy is not in the mood to be creative and make up her own story to it since it is strictly a picture book. Most of the time, it is not a problem, the pictures make the story easy to tell, but sometimes I am just not in the mood. However, my son adores this book and has learned how the pictures help tell the story as we discuss, for example, which way the truck will go when it reaches a fork in the road and how there is fog on the bridge. As a certified early childhood teacher, I know how important that skill is in learning how to read, so I love that about this book. All in all, this book is a wonderful addition to our home library.

Editorial Review:

Follow the big red truck on its cross-country journey in Donald Crew's classic wordless book, perfect for sharing with the very young.

Perfect for the young child and special needs preschoolers 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Need to send your 2- or 3-year old to school on a big yellow bus? Get this book. It is not for the pre-kindergardeners (though it appears on lots of pre-K summer reading lists), but its simplicity and basic language concepts ("cross the town", stop/go, arriving and departing, etc) are perfect for kids just learning language or having trouble with language acquisition. Its also a great way to get your young child used to the idea of buses.

Editorial Review:

A bright yellow school bus is evocative of exuberant kids, gleefully launched spitwads, kind bus drivers, and of course school itself. In Donald Crews's School Bus--written "for the buses, the riders, and the watchers"--preschoolers caught up in the whole school-bus mystique can follow the path of a school bus on its daily travels--minus the aforementioned shenanigans. Crews sticks with the basics, including only a few words per page, such as "Full buses head for school" and "Here we are." Adults reading aloud to children will be able to fill in the blanks and let kids make up their own stories within the framework of this book. Crews, creator of the Caldecott Honor book Freight Train, Parade, and the sturdy, board-book edition of Truck has proven himself to be an expert at conveying basic concepts to youngsters, and this book is no exception! A warm oportunity to reflect on special people and places. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Donald Crews departs from his usual simple text about such things as trucks and boats to share his childhood memories. The bold and colorful illustrations we usually find in his work are replaced by soft gentle colors and lines. Perhaps my endearment to this book stems from my own fond memories of riding the train back to my grandmother's home in Davenport, Iowa. Yet, there is more to this story than shared memories of days gone by. Even young children have memories of warm moments with someone special. As a first grade teacher I share this book with my students. It is a delight to see the special smiles that illuminate their faces, like the sweet smell of Spring, when they think of their special someone. For some children they think, like Crews, of grandma and her special cooking, for others their thoughts are of a visit to mom in a distant state. There thoughts are not meloncholy, like Crews, they are pleasant reminders of the treasures we find in each other.

Editorial Review:

When the train arrived in Cottondale, the summer at Bigmama's house in Florida began. Donald Crews brilliantly evokes the sights, sounds, and emotions of a memorable childhood experience. "A very special book by a superb artist and storyteller."--Horn Book.

An alphabet book that every age can enjoy, with a new twist on an old theme. Each letter represents something that will come in the future with that letter as its first in spelling. For example, "e" is for wood, tomorrow's embers." What a creative way to introduce vocabulary and thinking skills! Try to create your own Tomorrow's Alphabet and add to the book.

Great for toddlers! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My 21 month old son loves this book! This is great for a child who is already interested in planes. The text is very simple, which makes it easy for a young child to "read"; simply by describing what he/she is seeing in the picture. The illustrations are also very clear and colorful.

Donald Crews is a genius! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I highly recommend all of Mr. Crews' books. He writes in a style that is very easy for toddlers and pre-schoolers to relate to. Furthermore, his illustrations are positively delightful! However, I recommend this book even more because it was instrumental in easing my son's fear of flying and airplanes. I bought this book and read it to him before our airplane trips and I take it on the airplane and read it to him there as well. As the plane is in the various stages of flight, I show him that part of the book. I am not kidding, we went from a toddler who had to be carried on to the plane kicking and screaming to a kid that is excited about airtravel!

Editorial Review:

"With minimal text and bright-color illustrations, Crews captures the essence of a plane journey."--Kirkus Reviews. "A satisfying adventure for very young children."--Booklist.
