Editorial Review:

Alexandra Day's modern classic Good Dog Carl has sold more than 200,000 copies, captivating countless readers with the lovable rottweiler Carl, endearing illustrations, and the tale's surprising silliness. The book begins with the mother saying, "Look after the baby, Carl. I'll be back shortly." Let the adventure begin! Carl looks out the window to make sure Mom is gone. Once the coast is clear, the baby crawls out of the crib and onto Carl's back. First stop? Mom's bed. Second stop? The top of the dresser where powder puffs are sported as hats. The infant--now in Carl's capable paws--slides down the laundry chute, swims in the fish tank, dances, raids the refrigerator, and makes a huge mess. Carl dutifully bathes the baby, cleans up the chaos, puts his charge back in the crib, and plays it cool when Mom comes home. "Good dog, Carl!" she says upon her return. A sweet, subtly absurd picture book that jubilantly illustrates the old adage, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." (Picture book)

Kids Love the Impossibility of It 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In spite of the reservations of some earlier reviewers, I'd say our kids love the Carl books precisely BECAUSE nobody would use a rottweiler as a babysitter or as a pint-sized saddle horse for a toddler! We laughed and made a big deal to our kids that nobody would ever do any of this.

It is a bit over the top to consider this a dangerous book. If you've ever read the stories made up by very young children, in fact, these are quite tame. They enjoy thinking about being in control and what wild things they could do if the grown-ups weren't around. It's not as if your kids are going to try balancing a cake in the air while standing on a ball or will try flying a kite indoors after reading "Cat in the Hat." Although the pictures are realistic, these books are in that league.

PS The art in these books is beautifully and lovingly done, almost love letters to dogs and young children. They are a pleasure to look at, regardless of your age.

beautiful, detailed paintings illustrate witty story 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a book for very young children, but the illustrations are so lovely and detailed, and the situations depicted so full of wit and little hidden jokes, that I never get bored with it, even after "reading" it over and over and over again with my toddler. This is my very favorite of the Carl books, because the activities are totally non-materialistic and wholesome (riding a merry-go-round and a train, sharing an ice cream cone, getting sprayed by a hose), and because the park is recognizably inspired by beautiful Balboa Park in my native San Diego, where Alexandra Day lives. It's worth it to get both the board book and regular hardcover editions, just to appreciate the greater detail of the images in the larger format.

And I have to add just one more, mildly tongue-in-cheek comment: as for the "lesbian couple" alluded to in a veiled way by a previous reviewer -- well, I just have to giggle. Yes, there are two young, attractive women having a picnic on the grass as Carl and his charges go by. But it never would have occurred to me to impute homosexuality (or any kind of sexuality) to them. They're fully clothed (albeit in pants), and they're just sitting there -- hardly a lascivious scene no matter what your prejudices. Now if Tinky-Winky were pictured sitting with them, well, that would be a whole different story. I guess this just proves what everyone says is so wonderful about the Carl books -- you can interpret the images however you like.

Editorial Review:

Carl, the baby, and a new puppy spend an eventful afternoon in the park, riding on a carousel, romping in the flowers, and visiting a children's zoo.

The Carl board books are sure to be baby's best friends!

Love that Carl! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I'm a mission to purchase all the Carl books. I think it's a great way to show children how wonderful animals and pets can be. I especially like the board book format. It will allow my baby to enjoy it for a long time.

The most beautiful children's book ever 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is just the most beautiful children's book. The watercolor pictures are magical. The story is told mostly in these wonderful pictures. You can tell it slightly differently each time, and your child can make up words when old enough. The pictures tell a story that is full of love, humor, and happiness. It just warms my heart. My son and I love it equally. We received it as a gift and plan to buy the rest of the Carl books. What a joy of a book.

Carl's Birthday 3 out of 5 stars.

Be very careful if you intend to direct ship this to a recipient. No one loves Carl more than I, so I was eagerly looking forward to starting a new friend on her collection. My first book arrived and to my shock had page 10 one-third obliterated by a yellow ink swath. I returned the book and quickly received a replacement. WITH THE SAME DEFECT!!!!!!!!!! Frustrating calls to customer service only produced the suggestion that I try again and hope for the best. No one is apparently capable of opening this simple book and checking for the misprint. After notifying the publisher of Amazon's sale of second quality books, I cancelled and ordered from Barnes and Noble. I would be even more upset if this had been sent as a gift. You take your chances with this one. Sheila in NC

Happy birthday, Carl! But can Mom surprise him? No way. As hard as Mom tries, Madeleine and her canine babysitter extraordinaire are hot on her trail, tasting the party punch, peeking at presents, and adding some of their own favorite decorations.

Positive view of Rotties 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have always liked the Carl books since I have owned rottweillers for the past 16 years. They are great dogs who have received a bad reputation because of irresponsible owners. This book shows the life of a loving family dog. If you ever wondered what your pet does while you are at work, this is the book to read. Another great thing about the book if that it is told in pictures. You will only find words on the first and last page of the book, but the author and illutrator get the story across very well.

Editorial Review:

A new book to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Good Dog, Carl

Carl is finally back! Once again, Alexandra Day has concocted a very busy day for the amazing and all-around resourceful Rottweiler Carl. His owner believes Carl is at home taking a nap, when really he’s making tracks all over town. He visits a bakery, makes a delivery for the pharmacist, helps out a veterinarian, and joins in a magician’s act in the park. But in the most important event of the day, Carl becomes a real hero when he rescues a litter of puppies from a fire.

With eight more pages of fun than in the previous Carl books, this captivating adventure, related mostly through pictures, will delight fans old and new.

A little flat 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My daughter prefers Carl Goes Shopping and Carl's Birthday to this newest Carl. The illustrations are as always gorgeous, however.

Editorial Review:

Carl and Madeleine are supposed to be napping while Mom and Dad get the summer cabin ready for company, but this lovable canine and his charge have better things to do. They escape from the hammock to do some canoeing, pick blackberries, and enjoy a picnic. Carl even plays a little baseball! That night, Mom and Dad wonder why the two are so tired – little do they know that Carl and Madeleine have been busy exploring all that a summer vacation on the lake has to offer.

Told mainly through Alexandra Day’s gorgeous oil paintings, this summertime romp will make readers long to bring Carl along on their own vacations!

This is a Wonderful Book for All Ages! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I don't have any children, but I do live with a 5 yr old Rottweiler. It is so wonderful to see Rotties portrayed in a positive light. My pup is just as sweet as Carl and this book made me smile as I looked at every page because I could IMAGINE him doing some of the same things. And, the illustrations are simply gorgeous. This book is awesome.
I've read some of the more negative reviews on several of the other Carl stories. I can't believe that some people can be so dense as to believe that anyone would think that a dog can actually accomplish the actions depicted in these stories. The stories are designed to bring out the imagination in kids and adults to if they are willing to open their minds. Really, in one of the stories Carl can read, how many dogs does anyone know can actually read?
Well I love this book and I'm going to order some of the other Carl stories.

Editorial Review:

“Take good care of the baby, Carl.”
Mother knows she can trust Carl, a large and lovable Rottweiler, to watch over baby Madeleine. What she doesn’t know is that the minute she’s gone, Carl and the baby gallop off on adventures. In this collection of six of Alexandra Day’s popular Carl stories, Carl and the baby explore a department store, a park, and even a masquerade ball—and always make it back before Mother knows they’re gone. Carl and Madeleine’s joyful romps, told mainly through lush, wordless spreads, are gathered together here for the first time, and will delight children and all those who take care of them.

Carl has only one true master ... 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I always got the feeling that the "Carl" series was a feeble attempt at obliquely lavishing Satanism onto the minds of young children. Carl's ominous stance and focused, yet glaring control over the toddler seems like a veiled and shadowy attempt at mind control and looks like a deleted scene from one of the Omen films.

Many people have spoken out about this series of books over time and have been shouted down in the process by the militant and frothing fans that associate themselves with this very strange and very suspect material.

Historically, Rottweiler's have been associated as Hell hounds, Demoniacally possessed, guardians of souls, in both film and literature throughout the ages. When the parents relinquish control of their toddlers to "Carl", it comes across, subtly, like it's a passive reference to giving up your child as a sacrifice to Satan, himself.

Drowning your baby and throwing them down into a dark abyss are close to the top of situations that occur in Satanic Ritual Abuse cases nationwide and finding them as dramatic and comical situations in a children's book series leads one to raise an eyebrow and question the true motivations of Alexandra Day. Drowning, burying a child alive and immolation are the three most common occurrences with SRA crimes in America today, pawning them off as children's educational fare is suspect. All of these instances, and more, show up in all of the Alexandra Day books that are currently published.

I first became familiar with "Carl" when I was admiring the artwork while passing a large display conveniently placed in a large walkway at Nordstrom's. The artwork is really fine quality and rivals that of many children's books. But the stories themselves though lead one to only grimace and feel confronted with downright concern. Here are just a sampling of themes and situations that occur throughout the "Carl" series:

1. "Carl" rides away with child on its back, which is reminiscent of illustrations from Dante's Inferno.
2. Toddler falls into a large fish tank, symbolizing a dark baptism.
3. Infant is abandoned in a park and left under the auspicious control of "Carl" to vagabond and live hedonistically.
4. "Carl" locks adults out of a classroom, separating the child from adult supervision.
5. "Carl" leads the unsuspecting child into a burning building to save its offspring and a likely death.
6. "Carl" leads the child to a druggist for an all-to-obvious rendezvous.
7. "Carl" leads child into explicit adult situations with photographic equipment and double-entendre's to bear witness to lascivious deeds.
8. "Carl" takes control of the child during Christ's birthday, avoiding church and leading the baby into a freezing white blizzard, painting a sarcastic analogy of Heaven.
9. "Carl" leads the baby into a dark cellar on his birthday and disappears with the child for an inordinate period of time, only to return looking oddly disheveled.
10. "Carl" attacks three children and mauls a young female toddler on her hindquarters in "Follow Carl". Obvious punishment when you don't "Follow Carl".

The problem with the series is that while the goal might have been to make a cute story out of a Rottweiler and a child, it left more people than not, the dour feeling that something else was going on below the surface of the story and the parallels are all too remarkable.

When Carl is told to mind the baby at a department store, the faithful Rottweiler and his little friend do some mischievous exploring.

The Teddy Bear's Picnic--A Book to Treasure 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The pictures are enchanting and a source of delightful fascination. They are true to the original written words of the song. There could not be a more perfect marriage of pictures and words. This is truly a treasure to cherish. I wish, however, it was in hardback so it would last longer, as I am sure it will be read to our little granddaughter many times over.

easy to read 5 out of 5 stars.

nice colorfull illustrations and the song phrases are paired together on a page to allow the reader to allow more time on a single page rather than having to turn pages in the middle of the sentence.

Disturbing 1 out of 5 stars.

I recieved this book as a gift for my son and dont think it will be in our reading rotation. The artwork is disturbing and sort of scarry. If you want to scare your child into not going outside or near the woods then this is the book for you. Otherwise stay away from teddy bear picnic.

confusing storyline 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My son and I found this book to be less satisfying than other books about Carl (my son's favorite dog! :)The storyline is confusing and there are too many unnecessary details in the pictures. It looks like Alexandra Day switched to watercolors in this book and that was not a good change because pictures are not clear now.

Nice to see Baby finally gets some adult supervision 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I know the Carl books are based on whimsy, that Carl can take care of baby. But seriously, the series makes me want to call CPS. Nice to see that the parents have FINALLY tried to get an adult to watch the baby. Of course, the adult is incompetent, but it's a start.

4 stars for the parents not entrusting their child to the dog!

Carl Goes to Daycare 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is adorable! There are two parallel story threads, with Carl and baby at daycare, and the daycare provider being locked out of the daycare. My 3-year-old children love it, and I do, too.

Rotties will again 5 out of 5 stars.

It is great to see a rottweiller as a protagonist in a book. This book shows how important a pet can be to all of the family members. Rottweillers are wonderful family pets, and this is a cute story of Carl and his favorite little girl.
