Editorial Review:

Cubs On The Loose: Old Airplanes -- New Adventures is an irresistible series of true adventures with vintage Piper Cubs and their owners. NC-87881, lovingly restored for author Lyle Wheeler, has the time of her life flying with fellow Cubs and their "humanoids" just as they had in the past --- without modern navigational tools.

They represent a group of birdmen and birdwomen around the world who appreciate the Piper Cubs and their cousins, the Taylorcrafts, Aeroncas, Luscombes and many others. The Cubs, flying in formation, landing on grass runways and displayed at airshows provide excitement to those who enjoy the "lost art of low-and-slow, long distance flight."

As the narrator of this series of true barn-storming trips, NC-87881 notes that most Piper Cubs have not survived into retirement. "However, some of us are lucky enough to find ourselves in the hands of loving humanoids who treat us as actual living members of their families".

Fly with Wheeler and 881, and their companions, on their nostalgic excursions as they discover America, past and present. See the stary skies, experience the unpredictable weather, put your flat little donuts on the lush grass runways as you travel with these fun-loving travelers.

Along the way, the Cubs learn that fuel advertised is not always fuel available, that weather conditions can be a challenge when flying without modern insturments, that their humanoids are quick to accept the comfort of a bed rather than sleep on the ground. They meet wonderful friends --- humanoids and aircraft relations --- on their travels, and see the world from a special perspective.

Editorial Review:

George Berkeley was an idealist and an extraordinarily eloquent man of letters. Yet his views are traditionally regarded as wild and extravagant. He is well known for his departure from common sense, yet perversely represents himself as siding with `the common folk', presenting a complex challenge for students.

Berkeley: A Guide for the Perplexed covers the whole range of Berkeley's philosophical work, offering an accessible review of his views on philosophy and common sense and the nature of philosophical perplexity, together with an examination of his two major philosophical works, The Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous. Geared towards the specific requirements of students who need to have a sound understanding of Berkeley's thought, the book provides a cogent and reliable survey of the various concepts and paradoxes of his thought. This is the ideal companion to the study of this most influential and challenging of philosophers.

great orientation for newcomers 4 out of 5 stars.

It can be hard to find in-depth introductions to the East Bay, which, though lovely and a big city in its own right, is generally overshadowed by the glamor and tourist-readiness of San Francisco. This fills that gap.

The author has been a long-term newspaper reporter in the area, and the writing has the great casual assurance that only years of professional experience, *plus* first-hand understanding and affection, can easily convey. So much guidebook writing is such hackwork, a boosterish string of addresses and cliches, but the narrative here has intelligence, a sense of recent history and occasionally some understated-yet-sharp insights behind its listings and descriptions.

While most of the book focuses on Berkeley and Oakland, the author also gives some attention to "beyond the tunnel" -- the suburbs that are inland from O & B. This wasn't important to me, but could be useful as an even-rarer info source for folks who are looking to live in or visit those communities.

So far, I've used the book as background info for an apartment hunt in Oakland and Berkeley in preparation for an upcoming move. Oddly, one of the more useful sections for this was the "Shopping Districts." Although I had zero plans to buy anything in a "cute shop," knowing where the little neighborhood mainstreets were made it easier for me to judge whether potential apartments were in walkable neighborhoods, and the description of the mix of stores gave me a sense of whether I'd find the shopping useful, rather than malled-out or gentrified.

Once I get there, I definitely plan to consult the book some more, for restaurants, festivals, parks, etc.

If I had any gripe, it might be the design and layout, which does *not* negatively affect the content, but makes me think the publisher was cheaping out a little. The cover is really bland, with that over-familiar Cal gate, and what's up with the way-early-90s purple-and-green "desktop publishing" fade-effects? The visual presentation gives Oakland and Berkeley short shrift as cities, implying that the university is the only interesting thing. The text inside seems to have been mostly flowed-in and auto-formatted -- if you're looking for large-ish text, great, but if you like information presented compactly and efficiently, well, get your page-turnin' finger ready! Repeat: That's no gripe on the above-average writing and helpful info, though, which makes up for the basic design.

Editorial Review:

Berkeley and the East Bay area are so appealing, travelers to California may find it hard to squeeze in its sister city across the bay. Sparkling weather, a well-founded sense of community, a diverse population, unique architecture, and a lively mix of cultural, culinary, and collegiate atmosphere appeal to visitors and transplants alike. This thorough guide, filled with thoughtful reviews and insider tips, will have readers feeling like natives in no time.

Lois takes an ego trip! 1 out of 5 stars.

As an avid motorcyclist (I currently own two)and Central American traveler I was extremely excited get my hands on this book. My disappointment in it is almost beyond words. I feel obligated to write my first Amazon review as a warning to others.

My first impression was how in the world could an author compress such an epic journey into such a small book? After a thorough reading I'm all too aware of how that is possible. She simply blew through the entire journey as fast as possible and seemingly learning as little as possible.

For her "Glory ride" she chooses to travel through thousands of miles of Latin America but, by your own admission, doesn't bother learning any Spanish beforehand. Then she proceeds to complain endlessly about communication difficulties. She breaks just about every possible cultural taboo wherever she travels then proceeds to complain about not being treated respectfully. It seems the author's paranoia of host country nationals is more fueled by her chronic total disregard of indigenous culture than by any malevolent intent on the part of those she encounters along the way. The rich Gringa bikes through the Third World staying in ultralow budget accommodations and complains incessantly about a perceived lack of cleanliness by her first world standards.

The author mixes all of this with an unbelievable dose of hypocrisy by berating almost every other traveler she encounters! There may be more insensitive and disagreeable travelers in this region but, in my experiences and author would have to rate close to the top on the obnoxious scale! She chooses to travel with only one set of clothing and by her own admission is almost constantly filthy and stinks yet sees fit to complain when she is treated better than her appearance and demeanor would justify.

This book will tell you nothing about the cultures of central or South America because the author knows nothing of those cultures. This book will tell you nothing of the technical details of riding a motorcycle in this region because the author doesn't know anything more about motorcycles than how to add fuel and oil.

This book is a how to not travel! She blows down the road so fast and so blind as to not really experience anything. This is a classic example of having made the trip but never taken the journey.

The only redeeming feature of this book is that this time at least the "ugly American" was an ugly Brit. In a nutshell the whole story is painfully sordid and poorly rendered. If you must read it borrow the book from someone or a library. Please do not support this person in her ego trip by financially rewarding her!

Editorial Review:

Berkeley's Three Dialogues is a key text in the history of philosophy-the dialogues are, with the exception of Hume's, arguably the most important philosophical dialogues written in English.

In Berkeley's "Three Dialogues": A Reader's Guide, Aaron Garrett offers a clear and thorough account of this key philosophical work. The guide explores the complex and important ideas inherent in the text and provides a cogent survey of the reception and influence of Berkeley's work.

concise but comprehensive guide 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

a really good book! in less than 300 pages. it covers almost all you need to know about UNIX. shell programming,vi, emacs,c programming(make, ctrace, debug),sed, awk...... IMO, what make it UNIQUE, it is the third section on the UNIX system programming. a brief even but with full examples on ALL the system calls, File I/O, Signal, Process,IPC, Pipe.....even socket programming.

After I read this book, I feel very comfortable reading Steven's UNIX bible.

Only purchase for reference. 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Seasoned UNIX users will have no use for this book at all. There is a brief (and i mean BRIEF) introduction to Socket programming at the end of the book, and a modest introduction to csh programming as well.

The reason I purchased this book is I have been spending a lot of time with BSD unix flavors (Open/Free BSD, old solaris), and wanted to get a grasp of how they were different from SysV. I wanted to know things like file placement, differences in the kernel, and so on.

This book provides none of it. Think of it as a primer users guide for unix. Not for somebody who is administrating machines.

On its face, I certainly wouldnt even say it was worth half its horrendous... price. its a flimsy paperback with little value to anyone who knows the ins and outs of vi, ls, cd, and the other basic unix commands.

Buy an OReilly book.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive, one-semester introduction to Unix, used at Stanford University, incorporates sound pedagogy along with all the necessary reference material. Begins with the basic commands and finishes with advanced programming techniques. Offers strong coverage of systems calls and contains an excellent problem set.

Still come back to this one 5 out of 5 stars.

I have lived in Paris for over two years, but this guide remains my favorite for restaurant ideas, bars, cafés, and days I just want to change my neighborhood. While prices are in francs, and some of the stuff about bar and club trends is a bit dated, it's still the best resource I've found besides word-of-mouth for how to see the City of Lights on a budget. The restaurant suggestions are especially well-chosen.
