Editorial Review:

On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatt’s "Mother and Child" to Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" to Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa." Young art buffs will enjoy the very age-appropriate art appreciation lessons, as the children are encouraged! to say whatever they want about the art: "I like this picture because it’s red," says Arthur about Van Gogh’s "Self-Portrait." When pedantic Cornelius tries to pontificate, Celeste gently hushes him. Includes a free pull-out poster. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

A thoroughly charming book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Written in good humor for adults and children. I got it for my grandchildren and they like it. Babar talks to people as though they were visitors from another country, who need to be told about the wonderful things in his world. Yoga is one of those wonderful things.

Editorial Review:

Well before yoga became fashionable via Sting and Madonna, the beloved elephant king Babar and all the residents of Celesteville were finding peace and tranquillity through yoga. And now elephants everywhere can join them! Through easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step illustrations, Babar's Yoga for Elephants presents 15 positions and stretches as well as helpful breathing exercises. The book also provides useful advice on what to do with your trunk while in position, a dilemma that human yoga books often ignore.

Written by Babar himself, the book explains how yoga was introduced to Celesteville and how he and Queen Celeste keep fit doing yoga on their many travels. Including a pull-out poster showing Babar in yoga poses, Babar's Yoga for Elephants is sure to become a classic for elephants as well as their human friends.

The First Book to Read in the Babar Series 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Meet Babar and His Family was one of her picks.

The Babar books belong in every home with children. If you already know the series, I'm certain that you agree. If you don't know Babar and his family, you should. They represent idealized "family values" as elephants together. Their relationships with others are ideal as well, including their elephant friends, other animal friends, and the Old Lady (a human) who teaches school in Celestville, where they all live. I also like introducing children to a world where animals may have more authority than people do. That can help establish all kinds of interesting new thoughts about our relationship to the natural world.

Meet Babar and His Family has a good balance of illustrations, actions, and story development to keep your youngster's mind occupied while you read to him or her during the preschool years. Later, your child will be reading this and other Babar stories to you. Memorizing what you have read aloud and learning to follow along with the words will be part of that process of learning to read.

As the title suggests, this story is built around introducing each of the characters, helping you understand their qualities and role in the series, and showing the kinds of activities they typically do. The only aspect of the stories that is not fully developed is that Babar and his wife, Celeste, are king and queen of the elephants and rule over Celesteville. But they are wearing their crowns and are identified as king and queen, so you can expand on this theme of the later stories easily enough.

Most of the other stories in the series do not include all of these characters, so finding them all here will make it easier for your child to understand the other stories when you move on to them.

The Babar family's children are Pom, Flora, and Alexander. As is usual, they get a little too active, and one of them gets hurt (Pom, in this case) and is treated by Doctor Capoulosse. Naturally, Babar's young cousin Arthur is in the story, playing with his friend Zephir, the monkey. Cornelius, the oldest of the elephants, has tea with the Old Lady.

The story takes you through four seasons' worth of activities, including ones that the family does together (like go skating, picnicing, and listening to a concert) as well as children's activities (like a snowball fight, going to school, and taking the school bus). The Babar family likes to be together with their friends, also.

After you have enjoyed this warm family story, I suggest that you get out your calendar for the year ahead and jot down the activities that you would like to do with your family and friends. Then speak, call, go on-line, or write to make the arrangements. Spending the time you want with those you love requires a little planning and putting a priority on this activity. After all, you probably were looking forward to having a nice family life when you got married and decided to have your first child, weren't you? Stalled thinking, lazy habits, and lack of focus can keep you from enjoying this opportunity. Be like Babar and Celeste and be the royalty of your family by leading on to worthwhile activities!

Live a full and happy family life together!

Editorial Review:

Spend a year in Celesteville with Babar and his family! In the spring they prepare the garden, in the summer they sail on the lake, in fall it's back to school, and in winter they have fun in the snow.

Originally published in 1973, Meet Babar and His Family is a perfect way for young readers to get to know the first family of Celesteville as well as learn the seasons of the year.

Editorial Review:

When Babar and Celeste's new baby girl is born, everyone rejoices. What fun it is to watch little Isabelle learn to walk and play trumpet and roller skate... and get lost in the mountains! After the family goes for a walk one day, they discover young Isabelle is missing. Carelessly, Isabelle has forgotten what her papa told her last time she wandered off: never to disappear without telling her family where she is going. Eventually, the little rascal finds herself near the home of old family friends and ends up having a delightful day playing with them, until they see Babar on TV, desperately searching for his daughter. After a thrilling ride on a hang glider, the prodigal daughter returns to the welcoming (if scolding) arms of her family.

Laurent de Brunhoff's exciting Babar adventures, based on his father's original tales and artwork (The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant, Babar the King, etc.), continue to thrill readers, generation after generation. The familiar watercolors of this beloved elephant family are as appealing as ever, even in a contemporary story that includes CD players with earphones and yoga exercises. not for kids 1 out of 5 stars.

The poses are too advanced for younger children. The book cannot be used to read to children, since it is boring reading instructions.

Great Book for Teaching Yoga to Children! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a super cute yoga book for children, starring (and narrated by) Babar the Elephant. It talks about the earliest days of yoga (apparently, yoga was actually invented by elephants, although they looked more like woolly mammoths in the illustration), and then tells of how it was rediscovered and spread once again through the elephant world not long ago. Babar then takes us through his daily practice, and ends with some ideas of yoga to do on vacations at a variety of famous places (including the Golden Gate Bridge).

Today, I used the book to teach the class at my son's school (children ages 4 through 7), and it worked out very nicely. I read the intro, then we did the asana practice (beginning with Sun Salutations, which is how I always start the kids in their practice anyway), and I finished by reading the last section of the book, which was all text. The kids were particularly interested in seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, since we live near enough that it's a familiar landmark to everyone. It was a very nice way to do our practice today, and it is a lovely book for anyone who wants to introduce yoga to young children.

I disagree with the reviewer that said the poses are too difficult for small children - the only pose I didn't have them do was headstand. Also, they didn't find the instructions at all boring, since they were actually doing the poses as I was reading. It worked really well.

Editorial Review:

Following the phenomenal success of Babar's Yoga for Elephants and Babar's Museum, Larent de Brunhoff's latest, all-new Babar adventure will take children on a world tour they'll never forget!

As Babar said to his children, "We are taking you around the world." And so he does in Babar's World Tour, the latest from the venerable storyteller and artist Laurent de Brunhoff. Our favorite elephant family visits a number of countries around the globe. First stop is Italy where they learn to say, "Buon Giorno! Hello!" After that, its' off to Germany, Spain (where they learn to flamenco dance!), Russia, India, Japan and Thailand (for snorkeling). Then Mexico, the Southwest United States, Egypt, Antarctica, and of course, France (just in time for a fashion show!).

In this adventurous addition to the Babar series, children are introduced to an international array of cities, customs and languages as they learn to say "hello" in each new country. Babar's World Tour is enjoyable and entertaining for armchair travelers of all ages.

This is an old classic but a good one. My great-granddaughter loved it. The pictures are beautifully done and really attractive to small readers. I cannot tell you what she thinksabout it, but since she constantly picks it out of her little stack of books feel I made a really good choice.

Editorial Review:

Learn the seasons with Babar and his family

This reissue of a 1989 Babar classic introduces young readers to Babar's family and to the pleasures of the changing seasons with charming illustration and simple, brief text. In the chill and tingly air of autumn, Isabelle watches the leaves change color and Alexander carves a pumpkin for Halloween. Winter finds the family on a skiing trip, but before they know it the cherry trees are in bloom and Flora and Pom are helping their father plant a flower garden. Summer brings picnics by the lake and long days Arthur hopes will last forever. Not Isabelle: She's looking forward to the cool of fall again and getting back to school! AUTHOR BIO: Laurent de Brunhoff followed in his father's footsteps illustrating the Babar books starting in 1946. Since then, he has created more than 30 of the titles. He lives with his wife, writer Phyllis Rose, in Connecticut.

Editorial Review:

"Alexander aims his arrow at the apple. A bear reads a book in bed. Celeste wears her crown when she drives her car." From A to Z ("Zephir zips up his sleeping bag zipper"), Babar takes young readers on a trip through the alphabet. Based on the tremendously popular Babar series from Jean de Brunhoff and, later, his son Laurent de Brunhoff, Babar's ABC enlists the help of such beloved characters as Arthur, Cornelius, Pom, and Celeste to guide children on a learning-to-read adventure. Large colored letters, in both upper- and lowercase letters show up bold and bright at the top of each page, with a word that starts with the featured letter just underneath. "Ee," for example, stands for elephant. The full-page illustration below is packed with elephants playing, wrestling, swimming, and walking. An inset picture shows a bunch of bunnies with the caption, "White rabbits have long pink ears and little pink eyes." Fans of the classic The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant will be delighted by the endpapers, which show, instead of the familiar string of elephants zigzagging across the spread, a progression of elephants carting each awkwardly large letter of the alphabet, with the last elephant finally stumbling under the weight of X, Y, and Z. King of elephants, knave of theory 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My two year old son loves the pictures in this book, especially the giant blue whale and the tan camels. But don't take it too seriously as an introduction to mixing color. Babar may be king of the elephants but as a color theorist, he's a lightweight. Babar tells us that mixing the three primary colors makes black. Then, a few pages later, he tells us that to make brown you have to mix the three primary colors PLUS black. What? But I thought... Also strange--the "what will you paint with white?" illustration done in ice blue and every color BUT white. The problem isn't the contradictions but the fact that De Brunhoff sets himself up with the difficult task of bridging color theory, practice, and artistic convention in less than 30 pages. In a children's book! But kids will probably like the bright, clean illustrations. Also odd (in a non-color mixing way)--the page where Flora, Babar's elephant daughter, paints a herd of ten naked elephants.

Editorial Review:

The perfect companion to Babar's ABC and Babar's Counting Book!

Twenty years after its original publication, and on the heels of the best-selling Babar's Museum of Art, Babar's Book of Color remains a fresh and fun introduction to exploring the world of color. A visit to Babar's art studio turns into an adventure in colors and their combinations for Pom, Flora, Alexander, and Isabelle. Not only do they each adopt a favorite color, but they discover the joys of mixing two colors together to make a third. Before they know it, they're painting tan camels, pink flamingoes, blue whales and, of course, gray elephants! Babar's Book of Color will encourage a new generation of young children to find the color in their own lives.

A nonstop action adventure

It's Isabelle to the rescue when her father is mysteriously kidnapped while the two are on a camping trip. Babar's little daughter proves herself to be brave and clever when she tracks down her father with the help of a lion, a snake, and a monkey. The adventure is only just beginning when she finds the elephant king-he's being held in a hidden city by a group of strange elephants with striped ears! How plucky Isabelle manages to help her father escape makes for an action-packed adventure that will keep children on the edge of their seats as much as it did when the book was first released in 1993.
