The best memory I have of reading to my son, years ago... 5 out of 5 stars.

All of Tomie dePaolo's books are treasures, and this one is no exception! While in first grade my son Joshua was assigned this book and to make a shoe box diarama. It is the best memory I have about his childhood many years ago, as he is 21 years old now. This was "our" first Tomie dePaolo/Strega Nona book, and after we completed reading it we went to our local library and found all others written by dePaolo.

dePaolo's books are so creative and colorful, matched only by mischievious but innocent, captivating story-telling and magical intrigue that kept my son reading for hours. I would highly recommend Strega Nona and all other Tomie dePaolo books to all parents of pre-school and grade school aged children and grandchildren.

A classic book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very basic morality story - Big Anthony (who never listens) was told Not To Touch The Pasta Pot, but when he had a chance he went right for it! Alas, he hadn't paid attention and so neglected to properly learn how to turn the pasta pot *off* - with predictable results.

The image of Big Anthony eating his debt to the village is priceless :)

Tomie de Paola. When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works. Paperback

STREGA NONA
RETOLD BY TOMIE DE PAOLA
Reviewed by ETHAN

The book Strega Nona is a funny, nice, and is a story with a moral. When I was little, I loved it for its humorous plot and it's well drawn pictures. In fact, a lot of parents love it for there children.

Strega Nona takes place in a small village. In the village lives Strega Nona a nice old healer. She has a magic pasta pot. But, when Big Anthony comes along looking for a job, bites off more than he can chew.

The author TOMIE DE PAOLO has retold this children's story or book into a story for everyone no matter what the age. TOMIE has also given it pictures even though they do not give descriptions. They still are good understandable pictures.

Even though the book has a fantastic plot, pictures, and characters it has some faults. First, it did not captivate me and it did not give a good description of characters.
I would like to add something although it has its faults it is a wonderful book and it got the Caldecott Honor book Award.

This book is great for teachers because it has a moral and it is a perfect book for kids because they can understand it. Parents, I would say that this is the book to give to your children! That's why Strega Nona is perfect.

Editorial Review:

Now even the youngest readers can enjoy this award-winning story about Strega Nona, the beloved Italian "Grandma Witch, " and her magic pasta-making pot. In this slightly abridged version of the original, author/illustrator Tomie dePaola combines humor and warmth as he builds the story to a hilarious climax. Full color.

Watch Out For The Awesomest Book Ever!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Watch Out For Chicken Feet in Your Soup is a wonderful book by Tomie dePaola. It's about a little boy named Joey, that brings his friend, Eugen to his grandmothers house and Joeys grandmother is a, well, old fashion Itailain women. In the beginning Eugen is surprised at what stuff she does like putting their coats over the doe to make it rise high and when they had a lot to eat for supper. Then when Eugen was done Zup as Joey's grandmother calls it Joey's wasn't so, while Eugen was making bread with Joeys grandmother Joey was sitting at the table glowering. So just when Joey was done dinner Eugen and Joey's grandmother were done making the bread and putting them in the in the oven (BUMMER). Then they left with some of the bread. At the end Eugen said to Joey, Hey Joey I love your grandmother and Joey says Yeah me too. I know your thinking but he was mad at his grandmother because he didn't make bread but there is something I can't tell you that happens to make him happy but you have to buy it to know.

My favorite part is when Eugen says hey Joey I love your grandmother and Joeys says yeah me to. I like it because it makes me happy that he loves his grandmother and made another person love him to (even if it's just a book).

I would recommend this wonderful book to preschoolers to any one who likes picture books. But for people that can't read it's still a great book that has a good lesson in it.

There are many other fabulous books by Tomie dePoala just like this and they are all just as exiciting. Thank You

Fantastic book for every age 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My Mother bought this book quite a long time ago but I always love looking through it even as an adult. It is a terrific way to introduce children to the many sides of Christmas and short histories of various rituals (like having a Christmas tree) associated with the holiday. The Tomie De Paola's illustrations are brilliantly colored and beautifully add to the tales, songs and legends that Jane Yolen shares with the reader. There is something for everyone and shows many people common themes from different cultures. I think one of my favorite parts of the book would be the piece on the many different figures that visit people at Christmas. It explains a bit about their history and what they do. Among them are Old Befana, Sinter Klaus, Bishop of Myra, Father Christmas and the fairly modern version of the American Santa Claus as created in the famous 19th century poem, "A visit from Saint Nicholas".
The perfect addition to anyone's Christmas collection.

Children love this story... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am student teaching and used this book in the classroom for a lesson pertaining to the overall theme of Thanksgiving and the Indians. The children were on the edge of their seats through the entire story. I used an activity after the book where students had a piece of paper with a grid on it. In each box, there was a number (1-10) that students had to trace. Then, they glued the popcorn kernels in the grid with the corresponding number. There are so many ideas and activities that can accompany this story! I encourage all teachers to use it...no matter what age level! (I used this in 2nd grade).

Wow ! 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was a kid we regularly got this book on our weekly library trips because we loved it at bedtime so much! The historical notes were great, and I was particularly fond of the illustrations.

I'm so glad to find that it's still in print. I'm going to add it to my wish list right now!

The Popcorn Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked the book. The author was very creative with his illistrations. The reason I chose this book was because my favorite food is popcorn! Tomie de Paola must of had to do alot of research for this book. I would recommend The Popcorn Book to any lower-grade teacher.

A simple gift 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Sometimes the best stories are the ones that are simple, that come from the heart, like simple gifts. The Wise Men began the gift giving tradition to the Christ Child. We continue it to show adoration for the life of sacrifice to come.

Tomie dePaola's simple yet beautiful rendering of the legend from Mexico, that of the poinsettia, is told through his solid and vivid illustrations and a simple story line. The cover illustration shows this solid simplicity and elegance.

Lucida and her father live in the mountains of Mexico in a small village. They are a farming family and devoutly worship their God. This year the priest has asked Lucida's mother to weave a new blanket for the manger scene. While she works on it, she falls ill. Lucida is not experienced enough to finish it and worries that her family will not have anything to give to the Christ Child at end of the Christmas Eve procession.

On the night of the procession an old woman (an angel?) appears to Lucida to tell her that any gift is special because it is a gift. Lucida grabs an armful of weeds that grow freely in the village. After she places them around the manger they suddenly light up in flaming red stars at the tips. These are the Flors de Nochebuena--Flowers of the Holy Night.

They came to be called poinsettias when the ambassador to Mexico from 1825 to 1830, Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, brought some back to his home in South Carolina. Eventually these lovely flowers found their way into our American traditional Christmas as gifts for loved ones.

And "The Legend of the Poinsettia" could become a traditional book to take out for Christmas reading and let the blooms flame on the pages.

Editorial Review:

When her mother falls ill and cannot finish weaving a blanket for the church nativity, Lucinda tries to finish it and ruins it instead, but when Lucinda offers an armful of weeds for the manger, they are transformed into beautiful, red poinsettias.

Here is a delightful poem that tells of the story of the night before Christmas, when Santa Claus arrives with his reindeer and clambers down the chimney to fill the stockings by the hearth. The text and pictures combine to capture the feeling of magic and excitement, and give a real sense of warmth and Christmas spirit.

Wonderful childrens book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Michael Bird-Boy is a wonderful story, that takes an environmental message in to action. Michael Bird Boy is able to find solutions to problems in the story, with positive interaction between Michael and the problems. Michael is far more empowering and optimistic than the environmental classic The Lorax, without sugar coating the issue or leaving the reader (child and parent) without possible solutions.

A Lasting Impression 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow! I read this book as a child and I remember learning about the story and the environmental message. I just found my childhood copy and I am thrilled to find how wonderful it is again! I am glad it is still in print. Enjoy, teach your kids about changing things. Sadly, the black cloud this time is caused by a much more harmful problem, fossil fules...

A joyful read-aloud 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't give enough praise to this book. I've worn out my old copy and am now ordering a new one. The characters are fun and whimsical, kids can relate to them. The message is positive and empowering--kids come up with compromises and solutions to problems. And it has a subtle anti-sexist message without being overpowering and pedantic in its political correctness. Micheal Bird Boy and Boss Lady both seem comfortable in their own unique skin, and that's also a great message for kids. This is a fine example of a pre-k/early elem. book that shows environmental action in a positive light. A nice gift for the Micheals in your life!
