The first book I ever read by myself, and now, my son's... 5 out of 5 stars.

I'll never forget climbing into my dad's lap back in the early 70's and learning how to read this book. I can still quote the story from memory. What a great lesson about how different people can find common interests! After looking for it on-line for many months, I recently broke down and paid $... for a copy I hope my young son will enjoy as much as I did when I was his age. We both love ice cream, like Joe and Sam, so some things will never change!

An excellent resource for elementary teachers :) 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of poetry and the beautiful illustrations which accompany. As a kindergarten teacher, I found the anthology to be an invaluable resource for introducing young children (or any children) to the world of poetry. :

Editorial Review:

Even if there were no wonderful poetry in this book (which there is), it would stand on its own as a stunning tribute to children's illustration. Nine Caldecott medalists are represented here, including Maurice Sendak, Arnold Lobel, and Leo and Diane Dillon. This meaty selection of more than 100 poems includes many old favorites such as "The Gingerbread Man" by Rowena Bennett and poems by A.A. Milne and e.e. cummings, as well as limericks, humorous verse, and contributions from many cultures. Each section of poems--grouped by themes ranging from "Spooky Poems" to "Mostly Nonsense"--is illustrated by a different artist. You'll find biographical notes about the illustrators and indexes to the poems by title, first line, and author. Any collector of beautiful children's books--young or not so young--will sing a song of glee while leafing through this excellent collection. (Ages 4 to 9)

A must for every cat lover! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My oldest son and I fell in love with this cat story 2 years ago and now share it daily with his younger brother. They love the rhyme, count the cats, and repeat the phrases. It's timeless and ageless, since every cat-household knows that the felines adopt us - usually when we don't expect it!

Cats, Cats and More Cats 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a cleverly written, beautifully illustrated book about how a family got one cat -- that soon became a dozen cats. The small reader loves matching cats with their names and counting them.

Whimsical, imaginative and fun. Children who love cats will love the story.

A Family Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book to our three girls night after night when they were small. Now they are in college and high school and for Christmas I gave them each a new copy of it for them to (eventually) read to the little ones in their lives. The illustrations and poetry are engaging and entertaining ~ I think all of us can repeat the entire book from memory! It's right up there with our other family favorites: "Ferdinand" and "Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree" and "Doggies". As the other reviewers noted, kids love to find and name the cats, to repeat the ever-growing list of kitties, and to welcome in the latest addition to the family. Great to own, great to give as a gift (kids and adults, too!).

Editorial Review:

A counting story in verse shows how easily one sad and lonely cat can turn into twelve.

This book shaped the way I feel about personal privacy 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book in 1965 when I was 5yrs old. It is a sweet and loving journey of discovering personal space and boundaries... I have always treasured it and am so glad to have found a forum where I can express my love for this book.

Thank you

a book to cherish 5 out of 5 stars.

When we moved and had to get rid of hundreds of books, this is one of the books I kept. I have read it to my children and to my grandchildren, all of whom adore it. When my 14 year old grandaughter visited recently she pulled it from the shelf and re-read it, saying "I love this book!" It's warm, cozy, accepting, imaginative, enchanting. It prompted them to make houses of their own, either separately or together, which they played in endlessly.

Timeless integrity 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book in 1958 from my grandmother when I was three. I loved it from the beginning and asked to have it read to me over and over until I could read it for myself. I still have the original book and my children have loved it too. There is something about the idea that we all (Dads and Moms too) need to have a house of our own as a respite to get away from the many pressures that all people feel (especially parents) in todays busy world. With so many expectations for our youth in today's society, it seems important to remember that it's OK to take time for yourself.

Editorial Review:

Describes, in text and illustrations, such special places as a cardboard box, a blanket cave, and other "houses" where one can retire for peace and privacy.

Vibrant! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Very (I mean, extremely) vibrant illustrations and simple text depict a young girl's exploratory meanderings though a barnyard. Along the way she sees farm animals making sounds, and meets a friend. A map on the front and back covers charts her course. I was not particularly crazy about this book, but my toddler (bedazzled by the bright illustrations, perhaps?) absolutely adored it.

Editorial Review:

A little girl goes for a walk, greeting many animals on her way and meeting someone who becomes a new friend.
