Down a Dark Hall 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I bought Down a Dark Hall I knew it was going to be interesting. Louis Duncan is one of my favorite authors. Durring Down a Dark Hall a 14 year-old girl named Kit is chosen to go to the private school Blackwood School for Girls. Durring her time at Blackwood some unusual things happen to her and the few other girls that are there. Kit runs into some problems while being at this school, some of which she doesn't know what to do about. Ever since Kit has been at the school she has had a weird feeling about it. She's not sure what it is but she does know that it isn't good. The biggest problem at the school is when she is sleeping. Soon she becomes too scared to sleep but she has no choice but to fall asleep. The other girls that are at the schools are having similar problems but none of them want to face Madame Duret the school boards leader. This is a intereting book that combines mystery with common real life problems.

Editorial Review:

Suspicious and uneasy about the atmosphere at her new boarding school, fourteen-year-old Kit slowly realizes why she and the other three students at the school were selected.

Not one for the classroom 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would advise one to not read the book Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan. I had to read this book for school and didn't find it appealing. I disliked this book because it was unrealistic and inadequately written. Killing Mr. Griffin is also impractical and somewhat offensive. Most teenagers would not go to the point of killing their teacher because of strict rules and unfair teaching; because of this one never really believes what is going on. Lois Duncan isn't really making the reader believe what is happening. The characters are all very disappointing and unlike real teenagers. They are mostly chaotic and unintelligent. I was frustrated when the female lead, who was supposed to be a smart sensible girl, made a foolish choice because of a boy. Another example of an unrealistic part is when a character drugs his grandmother just to get out of the house. The characters were also underdeveloped. The plot in this book is truly predictable. Killing Mr. Griffin had barely any surprises and no suspenseful parts. Although the theme was true, it was presented in an undesirable and dull way. I was let down by this book and unless sifting through a predictable distasteful book is enjoyable to you, do not read it. Killing Mr. Griffin was also a book that dragged on for large amounts of time. There was major action in the book but it was presented in a way of tedious and confusing text. The dialogue was unrealistic and was not how teenagers talk to each other or to other people. I also thought that Lois Duncan could have found a title that did not give away what was going to happen. The plot was unlikely to happen and very random. Killing Mr. Griffin is not an enjoyable book to read and I highly recommend anyone to avoid using this book as classroom requirements.

Editorial Review:

A group of students kidnap their teacher to "teach him a lesson," but their plans go awry when he dies, leaving them in a morass of lies and guilt.

Interesting book 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was about two twins that didn't know they were twins. So one day they met each other. And then everybody kept saying to the first twin that they saw her at the beach. And that they saw her at home during school. So the first twin did not want to tell everybody that it was her other twin. And then she told her mom and her mom told her that she was adopted. To know more... Read the book!

Thought it was a pretty good book but I thought the ending wasnt very well written. It seems like she had some trouble but after that she acted as if it didnt happen. I dont really like how she isnt with jeff, like how it always happen in Duncan's books. when I was almost done with it, I thought how can she go back to her body? I was thinking was this going to be a good ending? or not? I also thought why would she write a story about it? so she has it off her chest? I didnt think it was one of her best books.

Editorial Review:

A 17-year-old senses she is being spied on and probably impersonated, but when she discovers what actually is occurring, it is more unbelievable than she ever imagined.

Immortality 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Nore immediately thinks there is something creepy going on when she returns to a new home from boarding school and meets her recently widowed father's new wife. This woman, Lisette, is beautiful and young and has two perfect teenage children of her own. They are living with Nore's father in a beautiful old mansion in New Orleans, and he seems happy. But Nore still thinks something is wrong.

Lisette is very protective of her children. She sees her son, Gabriel, falling for Nore and immediately tries to keep them apart. She often hushes her daughter, Josie, stopping her from speaking. Nore keeps feeling like she should be noticing something strange, but at first she doesn't catch on. Then she listens carefully to the things her stepfamily is saying. Josie refers to being present at a disaster that took place forty years ago. She and Gabe both talk about time passing them by, and being stuck where they are. Soon Nore begins to suspect that her stepfamily is not aging at all, that they may have found some way to remain youthful forever. Now that she knows, Nore fears that her own life may be in danger. But how will she convince her lovestruck father that something terrifying is going on with his new family?

The characters in this story are really vivid and nicely described. I liked the ending and felt like it fit well with the rest of the story. I found it rather unbelievable, though, that if such a method for staying young existed, more people wouldn't have figured it out and used it.

Editorial Review:

It doesn't occur to Nore to take the dream-warning seriously. Her new stepmother and stepbrother seem nice. But why does Nore feel so uneasy around them?

Maybe she should have listened . . .

Duncan Delivers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me tell you about a fantastic writer you're probably not reading. If you're a librarian or a high school teacher, then I know you're familiar with her. She's been nominated for hundreds of awards for Young Adult fiction, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award for a Distinguished Body of Work for Young Adults, from the American Library Association and the School Library Journal. Unfortunately, those accolades are not something most of us hear about. The books that get the big press are often those adapted for TV or film. As many parents, grandparents, teachers and teens themselves will tell you, Young Adult fiction has lately become an exciting and bewildering mix of Manga, dragons, young wizards, unfortunate orphans and catchy series.

All the while, Lois Duncan keeps publishing great stories. They're not as flashy as Eragon or Harry Potter, but they often incorporate the supernatural. Duncan's writing has a lot more substance than the Goosebumps or Animorphs series, but her books will more than meet the quota for chills or thrills. Many kids who like to read end up with a reading level that is several school-grade levels above their age experience or emotional development, and are left with few books that will really satisfy them. My dad frowned as I began taking Mom's Stephen King books off the shelf in third grade. Then, the summer I turned eleven, I was lucky to discover an entire shelf of Lois Duncan books at the Green Free Library. I'm sure my parents were relieved.

Since the 1970's, Lois Duncan has been turning out thrillers that fit the bill for younger readers craving suspense, a little spookiness, and sympathetic characters. Every few years, the publishers change the covers, giving them something more stylish to wear so they can catch the eye of the latest generation of teens. But I'd recommend Duncan to any mystery fan, no matter how many years-young. Her books accomplish what so many other books of the same genre only promise. Look on the covers of any contemporary thriller or mystery and you'll find critics raving about "taut prose" with "engaging, plausible characters" and a "fast-paced, page-turning plot". Duncan delivers all this and more. There's no need to figure out which one to read first, and there's not much difficulty figuring out if you've already read it, which happens to most of us with our favorite mystery authors. Duncan's books are not part of a series, nor are they formulaic.

If you need a place to start, my personal favorites are "Down a Dark Hall" and "The Third Eye". Both of these stories have a high school girl as their central character, and both of these girls have a psychic ability that neither realized she had. In "The Third Eye", Karen decides to help local police find kidnapped children and finds herself quickly ensnared in dangerous case involving "serial" kidnappers who strike nursery schools. The chapters reveal one surprise after another about Karen's family, her current boyfriend and her future. "Down A Dark Hall", on the other hand, does not appear to have anything supernatural about it - at first. Kit has been selected to be one of only four students at a private boarding school whose atmosphere is creepier than she'd like, but otherwise seems fairly normal. The reason she and the other girls are selected, though, is anything but educational. This story, too, eventually reveals things to Kit, not just about the school and the few other people there, but also about memories she couldn't quite figure out.

Picking up one of these books the other day, I thought I'd glance over it and ended up re-reading the whole thing. People who love to read often joke that once they start a book, the rest of the world goes away - or they wish it would. With Duncan's stories, that's not an idle joke or wish: it's a guarantee.

Author,"Hobo Finds A Home", Editor"Of A Predatory Heart"

Editorial Review:

When Karen closes her eyes, the visions come. Through time and space, she sees a place where stolen children sleep. And if Karen denies a young policeman’s request for help, the children may never go home again.

To start this off I Would like to say that i do not like to read and the only reason that I am writing this is that my teacher made me do a book report on it for an assignment. The story all starts off in the morning when Julie comes down from her room to eat breakfast and her mother tells her that she has a letter from a collage on the talble. She opens it to find out that she was accepted by the collage and will be going there after the summer is over. When she is done she goes up to her room and her mother tells her that she left a letter on the table. When she went down to get it she found that it was blank and had no return adress on it. When she opened the letter she found that it only contained one sentance in bold writing " I know what you did last summer." Then Julie gets togather with her friends: Ray Bronson, Barry Cox, and Helen Rivers. They tried to think of soomeone who would send Julie a letter like this. Then while Helen was out by the pool in her apartment she met a guy named Collingsworth Wilson (Collie). They talked for awhile and then she went up to her aparatment because she did not want to get burned by the sun. When she got to the door of her room there was a picture on it. It was a picture of a little boy on a bike. Then later the day Ray recived a newspaper clipping in the mail with no return adress like Julie's. Inside the envelope was a newspaper clipping. It was the Death Report on a boy named David Gregg, a 10 year old boy who they had killed last summer in a hit and run accident. David was riding his bike home from a friends house in the middle of the night because they had a fight and his mom would not come pick him up. Then while he was riding they came around a corner in their car and did not see in in front of the car because his bike had no lights or reflectors on it. They then hit him and sped down the road to a roadside booth to call the police to tell them what happened but did not give out thier names. Then why Barry was in his fraternity house he recived a phone call but did not know who it was from. The person on the phone told him to go out to the athletic field. There was a memorial day fireworks display going on and while everyone watched he got shot.

Editorial Review:

It was only an accident -- but it would change their lives forever. Last summer, four terrified friends made a desperate pact to conceal a shocking secret. But some secrets don't stay buried, and someone has learned the truth. Someone bent on revenge. This summer, the horror is only beginning....

Provoking not only tension but anger and sorrow, this is more than a thriller 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The first time I read this book I was not only tense; I was angry and a little disappointed. I wanted to shake people like George Corrigan, April's weak father and Max, his childhood friend, the FBI agent who talks George into working for him. His comment "I can usually talk George into anything" and George's explanation to April for his actions illustrate the control that a stronger person has over a weaker one. I understand George's actions after his character is revealed, but I still couldn't help saying to myself "What a stupid man!" It is obvious where April gets her naive streak from! As for Max, you would think he'd treat his childhood friend better. I wondered if his attitude is typical of FBI agents.

This book provokes many emotions besides tension and anger, however. There is excitement when a hitman tries to get at them in their hotel room and then later at the house in Florida. And there is sorrow when April reflects on her past life in Norwood with Steve, longing to go back, hence the book's title. The entire family, except for Bram, suffers from what I call Lot's Wife Syndrome. They are constantly "looking behind them" at what they had and becoming pillars of salt. It is only when this stops that they move forward to a somewhat satisfactory conclusion. A great effort by Lois Duncan, it made me sympathize with people who are in this situation.

Editorial Review:

How can April give up her name, her friends, her boyfriend Steve, and everything she's ever known?

April Corrigan feels like her life is over when she learns that her father has been working undercover for the FBI and the family must relocate under the Federal Witness Security Program.

No one can reach them now... or can they?

another great book from Lois Duncan! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was really intriguing and kept you wanting more. Some people don't like the fact that this book was slow, but I liked that it gradually went along without too many clues about the ending. It moved along at a comfortable pace and had a lot of character development which has always been important to me. I also liked that it didn't really have ONE climax, but many of them, all leading up to the final part of the book where everything came to a heart stopping ending.

They Never Came Home was about two boys who went on a camping trip and never came back. It told stories of all the charicters that are all tied together in some way, even though in the beginning it looks like they have nothing to do with the others. It tells of the boys even though you don't know it. It tells the stories of both families. Lois Duncan is really good at this and I find it really interesting to read what is happening to each character at the same time and hear things from all different point of views. Simple enough plot, right? WRONG! A whole lot happens and the plot takes many twists and turns involving jewelry, drugs, betrayal, love, and mental breakdowns. But even though some of the other reviewers here think that the plot twists weren't easy to follow, I thought they were relevantly simple, but genius to think up and put together. (perhaps it was harder for them to understand because they are younger than 13. I mean it's a book for teenagers, if you aren't a teenager, then don't read it, and if you do, don't review it because there is bound to be plenty that you don't understand.) :) Sorry, had to blow off a little steam!

OK, so I won't give away any more of the plot and just tell you to READ THIS REALLY GOOD MYSTERY AND ALL THE OTHER CHILLING BOOKS BY LOIS DUNCAN!!

Editorial Review:

A book that has everything! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book. It has a little of everything: thrilling parts, emotional parts, supernatural stuff, and romance.

A girl, Rachel, has to live through a summer where her couisn, Julia, has to stay with Rachel and her family. Julia's parents died in a car wreck. But Julia's weird. She takes over Rachel's best friend, her boyfriend, and her clothes. She goes to the dance that Rachel was supposed to go to but couldn't because she had hives. Julia goes to the dance in the dress that Rachel made herself for herself. Rachel's dog bit Julia once, and Julia she yelled at the dog. Next thing that happened is Rachel's dog is sick. Rachel eventually thinks that Julia is a witch.

I thought this book was good. It's very creepy and gives you chills.

My favourite Lois Duncan book so far 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book last summer and I couldn't put it down. This book has all the elements of an awesome horror thriller with suspense and action around every corner. It has likeable characters, and Lois Duncan leaves you hanging onto every word. I love this book and I hope you read it too.

Editorial Review:

Soon after the arrival of cousin Julia, insidious occurrences begin that convince Rachel that Julia is a witch and must be stopped before her total monstrous plan can be effected.

Rebellious but really smart and can fingure out things easily. I love Cricket too because she is a cute little girl who loves her parent very much.
