A Winter Wonderland from a Bygone Era 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This classic book published in 1947 wraps me in a soft fuzzy blanket of nostalgia and makes me crave the good ol' days of clean white snow and sledding, rubber boots and all the neighborhood children playing together in the huge drifts. It takes me back to being snowed-in, warm fire in the fireplace, hot cocoa and the Postman whose name I knew bringing armloads of Christmas cards. The world depicted in this book does not include the sound of a snow-blower or a snow-mobile. It does not have Doppler radar to let me know it's going to snow. In this book we rely upon the ache in a woman's big toe and the fact that a farmer says it smells like snow. The rabbits know it and the kids search the grey sky waiting for the first snowflakes. This book takes us from those first feathery flakes through a really deep snowfall. We're there as the townspeople shovel themselves out. We're there as the grown-ups contend with the winter snow and the children revel in it. Eventually Spring comes and is greeted with as much gladness as the first snowflakes. The simple four color watercolor illustrations are just wonderful and made me yearn for the days when we didn't hurry from climate controlled houses to climate controlled cars to shopping malls with trees and fountains, for the days when we were on speaking terms with the weather. The writing in this book is so lyrical and gentle that it makes a perfect bedtime story and it is sure to warm the heart of the adult who's doing the reading. For example, "Then without a sound, just when everybody was asleep, the snow stopped, and bright stars filled the night. In the morning a clear blue sky was overhead and blue shadows hid in all the corners." Share this one.

Editorial Review:

When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grownups do when a snowstorm comes. But the children laughed and danced, and caught the lacy snowflakes on thier tongues.

All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book -- the frost ferns on the window sill, the snow man in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world. Roger Duvoisin's pictures in soft blue half-tones with briliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the gaiety and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text.

Appealing and quirky goose 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Petunia is a goose, she finds a book and suddenly realises that she must be very intelligent. So she carries the book around under her arm. Other animals in the farm come to her for advice which she dispenses, but usually without good results. Then she comes across a box, she thinks she knows what to do - unfotunately her advice is not good for dealing with a box of fireworks.

There is disaster and Petunia has enough sense to realise that she has not gained any knowledge from simply carrying a book around but must read what is within the pages.

An appealing and quirky book. Also try out Petunia's Christmas. Very good child appealing parables.

Editorial Review:

When Roger Duvoisin first introduced children to his proud and silly goose, Petunia, in 1950, it was love at first sight. Those children have grown up, but Petunia is every bit as fresh and funny and muddled as the day she was born.
In this, the first of the series of classic books featuring the silly goose, Petunia finds a book--and, deciding that if she owns a book she must be wise, dispenses hilariously mistaken advice to the other animals in the farmyard.
With its gentle lesson and the kind of humor that kids love best, this new edition of a picture book classic will delight and inspire a whole new generation of readers.

an excellent story 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

my 3 yr old daughter and i chose this book at the library today based on the reviews i read from amazon; and the book did not disappoint. the story is very well written; simple and not too complicated, however, not so simple as to lose the interest of the child/reader. I am finding as my daugher is building her library, that most of her favorite books are the older ones, such as this; with very good and simple story lines, happy endings and simple illustrations. nothing too excitable, scary, or inappropriate for her age. this book would be great for 2yr old right on up to kindergarten.

Editorial Review:

A friendly lion in a small French zoo enjoys the visits of the townspeople who stop by each day to say “Bonjour, Happy Lion.” So one day, when the zoo keeper forgets to close the lion’s door, the Happy Lion decides to return the visits to all the nice people of the town. To his amazement, as he strolls through the town his friends scream and run from him, the police and fire brigade are called, and people cower in their shops or houses. How a small boy saves the day concludes a wonderfully satisfying story that is just the right length for bedtime or anytime.

At age 50, The Happy Lion continues to charm and delight and Alfred A. Knopf is proud to reissue it for today’s young children.

Long Time favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I loved this Christmas story as a little girl! I have read and reread it over the years. Now as a teacher for almost 20 years I get to share it with my class each year as my favorite story. It encourages them to think of others during this busy season. It is a beautiful and fun lesson about loving and what you can do for others.

Editorial Review:

While taking a walk in the snow, the pet goose Petunia meets Charles, a most charming and handsome gander. Handsome, yes–and hefty, because poor Charles is being fattened for Christmas dinner by the farmer next door. Will the gander of Petunia’s dreams be served up roasted, with applesauce on the side?

Petunia’s determination to save Charles, even if it means posing as Santa Claus, results in “one of the simplest, funniest, and most original of Christmas stories,” wrote the Chicago Tribune when this book was originally published in 1952. A yuletide classic by a Caldecott Medal winner, Petunia’s Christmas is still making children laugh as it shows the true spirit of Christmas.

"Hippopotamuses can sometimes be very conspicuous." 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Veronica, a hippo, refuses to be ignored, even though she is lost among all the other hippopotamuses that live on the riverbank, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters, all floating along, blending into one large mass. Deciding to make her mark on the world, Veronica walks away one day, leaving her family behind, determined to be noticed. After a long, lonely trek, she comes upon a city teeming with people and automobiles, horns honking, all the noises of a busy metropolis; best of all, "there was not another hippopotamus anywhere". Unprepared for the problems of the city, Veronica is somewhat nonplussed by the crowds, the traffic, the noise, nowhere to rest, nothing to eat at hand. Unfortunately, everywhere Veronica goes, trouble follows, angry people yelling at her to get out of the way, angry, holding up traffic and causing any number of problems for busy city dwellers.

Sadly, Veronica's great adventure goes awry in spite of her best intentions and she is pushed and pulled into jail, a small building much too tiny for her huge body. Luckily, a kindly elderly lady comes to Veronica's rescue, realizing that Veronica is ready to return home, having had her fill of city life. The lady has Veronica transported home, where she is welcomed heartily. Veronica has been missed. The weary hippo is content to be among family and friends, captivating them each evening with her wild tales of the city. Her yearning for individuality has catapulted Veronica into an unfamiliar and unfriendly world where she learns the value of belonging. It's all right to go home, her memories a source of entertainment for them all. Luan Gaines/2006.

Editorial Review:

Veronica, a hippopotamus who wants to stand out from the herd and be famous, travels to the big city where she indeed does stand out. Causing traffic jams, blocking sidewalks, and devouring a pushcart vendor’s vegetables in one big gulp, Veronia is arrested and jailed. How she discovers that there is no place like home is told with warm humor and sublimely mirthful illustrations that are great fun to share with a young child.

This is one of our family's favorite books! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I admit, when we were first given this book by friends at a local library, I didn't get the point. The pictures appeared unattractive and when I read the book silently it was unappealing. I am very glad that it became one of the children's read-aloud choices right away. This book is wonderful. Yes, it is about fog, and could very adequately be used in a unit study about the weather. That, though, really isn't its appeal.

It is the story of fog and the effect it has on the plans of some fishermen, some fathers, and some vacationing children. The pictures are wonderful! They easily convey the feeling of chilly, damp weather -- imposing a strange feeling of melancholy to the reader. But as the story evolves, the plot lightens with the fog, and the pictures eventually brighten to conclude a story about disappointment and interrupted plans.

It is a nice read-aloud and inspires questions and conversation throughout the reading. Our copy is now missing some pages. An order is in for a replacement. This book is a treasure and well worth uncovering.

Editorial Review:

In a Cape Cod seaside village, the children romp and play throughout a heavy fog with strange and mysterious effects.

One of my very favorite books as child 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I had a very old, very worn, very loved copy of this book and just recently replaced it with this hard cover copy. The book is just as a remember it as a child. The art work is done in beautiful, soft watercolors. The story is about a donkey who is sad because he compares his ears to all the other animals ears in the barnyard. He takes advice from each of them on how to improve his appearance, much to his dismay. The story has a happy ending and is wonderful for teaching children to appreciate themselves and others just as they are.

Editorial Review:

Donkey-Donkey thinks that he looks ridiculous with long ears that stick straight up, so he consults his friends on the farm. Each animal has its own idea of beautiful ears—all remarkably like their own. Poor Donkey-donkey becomes sadder and sadder as he tries to follow their advice, with hilarious results. Finally, a little girl visiting the farm admires his long ears and, with new self-esteem, Donkey-donkey keeps his beautiful long ears upright from then on. This charming picture book was first published in 1933 with black-and-white illustrations and then in 1940 with beautiful fullcolor pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations. Knopf is proud to reissue a fascimile of the 1940 edition that sold more than one million copies before it became unavailable about 25 years ago.

A large, happy hippo can't wait to make friends in her new barnyard home 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Roger Duvoisin's VERONICA ON PETUNIA'S FARM tells of a large, happy hippo who can't wait to make friends in her new barnyard home. But the farm animals think she's strange and don't like her, and she hides from them until they all get to know each other. An engaging tale of friendship.

Editorial Review:

VERONICA, THE VERY conspicuous hippopotamus, is happy to move to Mr. Pumpkin’s farm. There will be so many animals to gossip with! But the other animals do not return Veronica’s hearty “Good morning!” And they say nasty
things about her. Her feelings hurt, Veronica hides in the barn for a whole week—the animals spy on her as she wastes away and looks morose. Feeling guilty, the animals offer gifts to cheer her up, and when she finally joins them in the barnyard, they see the biggest smile ever on Veronica’s face. First published in 1962, this sequel to Caldecott Medalist Duvosin’s Veronica captures with humor and an upbeat conclusion the real-life dynamics often faced by a new child in school.

Should be a Christmas Classic in Canada 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This should be a Christmas Classic in Canada. Someone should reprint it. Published in 1943, or there abouts, it is still as fresh as tomorrow. The Killer Whale delivers gifts around the world when Santa's reindeer are felled by the flu. This was my favourite Christmas story, and remains indelible. I search out fine copies still available used.
