The urban Gingerbread Boy story 5 out of 5 stars.

Set in New York City, Richard Egielski's version of The Gingerbread Boy is a treat for the eyes. The illustrations are richly detailed and colorful, and my 3 year old son loves this modern version. He and I talk about the characters and details, telling stories within the story. Our favorite illustration shows of a group of construction workers who pause in their work to chase that irresistible gingerbread boy. My son really loves the chase scenes, but the picture of the fox eating the gingerbread boy is a little scary. We highly recommend this version to readers 3 and up.

What a fun book this was to read! A "backwards" fairy tale! Award-winning Minnesota author, David LaRochelle, started at the end of his fairy tale and it became the beginning of the book. Quite frankly, I was skeptical if this idea would actually work. But it does work, and it even flows extremely well. It's also quite an interesting story to read if you are looking for a really good fairy tale that's packed with an excellent storyline and really fun illustrations.

We have a princess, a knight, lemonade, a dragon, a hungry giant, a flying teacup, a huge tomato, and the cutest bunnies you ever saw (the bunnies are
on almost every page) and even a blue-colored, flying pig!

This is a must-read fun fairy tale for you - from the beginning, which is really the end, to the end, which is really the beginning! Confused? Don't worry - you won't be. This book is really slick!

Caldecott Medal winner Richard Egielski did an outstanding job of illustrating this delightful fairytale with his humorous touch. (Note the funny faces on all the trees!) David La Rochelle's magic mind and way with words created this terrific story. On the back flap of the book, David reassures his young readers that he has never been afraid of bunny rabbits, but... he is concerned about any tomatoes that are taller than he is, and...David is very tall. Richard says that he enjoys a cold lemonade on a hot day (much like the princess in the story perhaps).

Three French hens -- Poulette, Colette, and Fifi -- get lost in the mail in New York City. They were supposed to be part of a holiday delivery to Monsieur Philippe Renard, and they can't find him in the phone book. But of course! They must translate! And so they end up on the Bronx doorstep of Phil Fox. Phil is a real fox whose only friend is the cockroach he shares a home with. Suddenly his home is bustling with hens, and his mouth begins to water in anticipation of a scrumptious holiday meal.

I'd better stop there, so you'll have a reason to read this book. What fun! It'll be great holiday fare for beginning readers and their parents. It should also appeal to most adults on many levels: the meaning of friendship, the spirit of the holidays, the amusement a child's picture book can bring. A worthy companion to the Grinch.

"6:32 a.m. This is the farm. My partner, Bill, and I were working the barnyard shift. It was peaceful. Quiet. Then we got the call."

Much of this fowl-filled homage to Dragnet (DUM DE DUM DUM!) will be lost on kids--and a few grownups, for that matter. But that doesn't make this straight-faced send-up of that famous crime-partner show--and a dozen-odd fairy tales thrown in for good measure--any less funny.

"So you're saying you were robbed, is that right, ma'am? What exactly is missing from the nest, ma'am? Eggs, ma'am? Chicks, ma'am?" But it turns out that it's peppers that have gone missing--a peck of "perfect purple, almost-pickled peppers." But nobody was talking: "We had Horner in the corner and were trying to make Little Boy Blue quack." Then our intrepid pair of web-footed investigators gets a break in the case when a tub of "tartest tasty tomahtoes" turns up missing. DUM DE DUM DUM!

It's just more wit from the wonderful Margie Palatini, who brought us Piggie Pie and Zoom Broom, backed up on this assignment by the spirited illustrations of Richard Egielski. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

The best in the Lewis Barnavelt series! 5 out of 5 stars.

John Bellairs' "The Letter, the Witch and the Ring" was the last in his Lewis Barnavelt series that he saw through completion before his death in 1991, Brad Strickland then continued the series, but never reached near the great thrill involved in this outstanding adventure. "The Letter, the Witch and the Ring" follows "The Figure in the Shadows" which I found rather disappointing and is the third in "The House with a Clock in its Walls" or Lewis Barnavelt series, this one however, hardly includes Lewis, instead, Rose Rita Pottinger introduced at the end of the first book stars in this great sequel.

Rose Rita Pottinger isn't looking forward to summer, her best friend Lewis is going away to camp and she'll be left all alone, there's an opportunity for her to join a girls camp, but she does not want to spend summer with other girls, mainly because she is a tomboy and believes that boys get to have all the fun. Nearby, Mrs. Zimmermann receives a letter from her late cousin Oley inviting her to pay a visit to the now deserted farm up in Wisconsin, which Mrs. Zimmermann has now inherited as well as an old snake-shaped ring which Cousin Oley believes might be magic. Mrs. Zimmermann invites Rose Rita in what-seems like an ordinary trip to the north, instead what they encounter is a thrilling unforgettable adventure facing the wicked witch Gert Bigger!

When Mrs. Zimmermann and Rose Rita arrive at Oley's Farm in the old green 1950 Playmouth (Named Bessie), they find that the place has been broken into and the ring stolen. Now the mystery is, who would want the ring and for what? Things go very wrong and seem to be getting worse and worse, more frightening for Rose Rita, especially after Mrs. Zimmermann mysteriously disappears. Luckily for Rose Rita, she's able to meet some new friends there, for instance, the Sipes family, who although sometimes become trouble for the girl, their intentions are always good.

What I loved most about this great book was its atmosphere, it seems surrounded by a somewhat gloomy, yet cozy feeling and the different events are chilling, sometimes you might even feel your heart-rate speed up enourmously. Indeed the greatest among all of the Lewis Barnavelt series I have read! A winner!

I thought it was dorky, but my 3-year old loves it 5 out of 5 stars.

I have to buy this book after borrowing it from the library. My daughter always has me read it 2 or 3 times in row. Although the first time we read it, was a bit dramatic for her. We got to the "heavy drama part" in the story, and I heard a whimper from my daughter. I turned and saw her lip quivering, and her eyes filling up with tears. I hurried up and explained, "Don't worry honey -- he gets saved--he gets saved." And then we flipped a couple pages ahead. "See, the Tub Child is back with his family." And so she was quickly reassured. As soon as we finished the story, her response was, "Read it Again! Read it Again!" And no more tears. But she still always flips ahead to the page where the Tub Child is back with his family!

During an unseen child's bath time, the seven members of a wooden toy family ride on the floating soap and compete in swimming races.But after the near loss of the Tub Child down the drain, they are all reunited on a warm bed, where they mountain climb on the ridges formed by soft quilts.

"Paradise lost is sometimes heaven found" is the closing line in Hey, Al, a wonderful book that has a timeless moral for both kids and adults. Al is a janitor who is not happy with how is life is going. He lives in a room with his dog, Eddie, who is also not happy with his situation. One day a bird appears at the window promising to bring them to a better place, "no worries, no cares". Of course, something that sounds that good probably isn't.

This book is definitely an entertaining story. The pictures are colorful and very detailed. Kids will love looking at them and pointing out all the different birds and laugh at the silly transformation that Al and Eddie go through. I think they will also get the story, that what you have is usually better than what you lust for. Everyone, at some point in their life, dreams about something better. This book is a great reality check for us, giving a serious message in a kid's book.

If you liked the first Tub People book, you will enjoy this one with a Christmas theme. It keeps the spirit of Christmas alive in a unusual way.

What's a Tub Child to think when his Grandfather hands him a metal hook and tells him to “stand guard” as a roly-poly man in a red suit with a very large sack and an even larger tree pops out of the chimney in the middle of the night? In this last of the Tub People trilogy, the beloved tub toys meet Santa, who rescues the Tub Child from the overly friendly family dog. On a whim, I googled this book today to see if I could buy a copy online somewhere. I LOVED this book as a child and feel a strong desire to reread it. Call it 'comfort food'. I was so enamered with the story, the writing, Amy and the Capt, that I was upset when I turned the last page of this book. It is an amazing fantasy- Kennedy pulls your imagination out alongside his. Highly recommened for any age, this story will inspire your child (or yourself) to become an avid reader of fantasy, such as "A Wrinkle in Time", the Narnia Chronicles, etc. Can't wait to get my new copy.

More Than A Pirate Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

My 4 year old son is big into ships, particularly pirate ships. This book captivated him (and his 2 year old brother) every night for over a month. Many of the Mother Goose references were familiar to him and he enjoyed hearing the poems over and over. Pirates became the biggest intrigue and the action had to be edited toward the end. Still, it will be a book I am sure we will read again and again. The song "Greensleeves" has taken on a new meaning in our home and the boys are learning the lyrics, it is now the most requested night lullabye.
