Family Fun in the Snow 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Children's books seem like they are a dime a dozen. I paid no attention to children's books in the past, but with my two little girls, I notice them more than before, and one thing I have quickly discovered is that, in many instances, there is very little to distinguish one from the other. This is why I am ever so grateful when I discover a book that has something unique to offer. And Snowballs is certainly one such book; offering illustrations and dialogue that sets it apart from other children's books.

Many things about this book make it worthwhile and one of the things I like is the creative dialogue. There aren't a large number of words, no. But I like the way the author starts out talking about birds and how they are often very scarce when snow starts to fall. This may not seem like a big deal, but it shows that this author wanted to make the book a little more creative than the usual children's book.

The words in this book are kept to a minimum, like they are in most children's books, but they are still effective and they state just enough to hold the attention of most youngsters. However, the best aspect of this book isn't the words- it's the drawings. What makes the illustrations so different from other children's books isn't necessarily the colorfulness of the illustrations, although the colors are memorable. What makes the pictures stand out in a crowd is the fact that they combine real pictures with drawings. For example, in the opening pages when the book is talking about birds, it is depicting pieces of popcorn, peanuts, bird seed, etc., in actual photos- not just drawings. These are superimposed on top of drawings of the snow family. Even the snow family shows actual items, like scarves, bows, leaves, twigs, and other things, giving the pictures a very realistic appearance.

Overall, Snowballs is a very good children's book about snowfall and family. We won't be seeing any of the white, fluffy flakes falling from the sky in my neck of the woods (Gulf Coast). But we will be enjoying books like Snowballs- books that enthrall children with their well- illustrated pages and their emphasis on family.

Editorial Review:

Pull on your mittens and head outside for a snowball day. Grab some snow and start rolling. With a few found objects--like buttons and fabric and seeds--and a little imagination, you can create a whole family out of snow. Children will love poring over Lois Ehlert’s bold, funny illustrations and identifying the common (and not so common) objects she uses to decorate her snowy family.

Great introduction to two digit numbers 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a good book for little ones to learn two digit numbers. Once they know their single digit digit numerals then it helps with the teen numbers and onward in a similar rhyming style as the first Chicka Chicka ABCs book.

Not like the original one 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had really liked the original version of this book which is meant for slightly older children. So I got this for my 14 month old daughter. She is least interested in it although she loves books and has many favorites. I didnt like it much either. There is no rhythm and the text doesnt flow very well. In fact, the last few pages just contain a bunch of alphabets thrown in as if in a hurry to finish the book. There are better books out there!

doesn't flow 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I heard this was a great book, but it was disappointing. There's no flow to this book at all. I kind of felt like it was missing something. . . I now realize that there's another version that is more complete. I do not recommend this board book at all. Honestly, not even for babies. Just because it's a sturdy board book to chew on isn't a good enough reason for me!

Editorial Review:

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, the beloved classic picture book, is now available in an abridged board book and maraca gift set perfect for parent and child to share. This rhythmic, rhyming storybook will have little ones clapping, stamping their feet, and singing their way from A to Z and back again. Packaged in a handy carry-along tote, this alphabet treat is sure to bring the beat and a smile to even the youngest child.

Boring and Unclear images of Produce 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son will read just about anything. He devours books. But not this book. This is probably the only book on our bookshelf that has never requested we look at or read. This book has no text, just watercolor paintings of the fruits and veggies. But the images are not all that easy to differeniate from one another. If, like an infant, you had not yet experienced this produce, I think that you would be unlikely to link the pictures in the book with the real thing in the grocery store or garden. I was disappointed with this book, as is my son, apparently.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great for infants on up! It is bright and introduces fruits and vegetables not always encountered in baby food. Our toddler is now learning her alphabet and it is perfect! It also has given her ideas of new things to try.

L is for Lois--our 4 year old's favorite author 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Everywhere we turn we find Lois Ehlert books. From our local library to our boys' school book bag, Lois' books keep popping up. As I write this, our twin 4 year old boys are downstairs with their daddy getting ready for sleep while they guess away with enthusiasm at the contents of Eating for Alphabet book, all fruits and veggies. The illustrations are wonderful; the large type is perfect for children who are learning their letters and words. What is best about several of this inspired writer's books is the focus on growing the foods we eat and imparting that to our kids. Our boys' first choice is Lois' Vegetable Soup book. Eating the Alphabet is a close second. In this crazy, over-processed world, all of Lois' books are fun, inspired and offer the gift of a much easier and simple-pleasure world for our children to enjoy and cherish.

Editorial Review:

While teaching upper- and lowercase letters to preschoolers, Ehlert introduces fruits and vegetables from around the world. A glossary at the end provides interesting facts about each food.

Great for teaching shapes and colors 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My son adores this book. He started looking at the colorful pictures/shapes when he was about 1 and his interest in the book has not waned, but only evolved. At some point, he liked the book so much, I bought several of the author's other books (Planting a Rainbow, Fish Eyes, Color Farm, etc.) and he was on a Lois Ehlert kick for a while where he'd only want to read and flip through her colorful and innovative illustrations. This book is ingenious in the way the author uses cut-outs to form shapes of different animals and then builds upon those primary shapes (starts out with circles, square, triangle) by using more complex shapes (hexagon, rectangle, etc.) to form images of other animals, while reinforcing the shapes used to form the animal image from the previous page.

I highly recommend this book and this author...also get "Planting a Rainbow."

Editorial Review:

Shapes and colors in your zoo, lots of things that you can do. Heads and ears, beaks and snouts, that's what animals are all about. I know animals and you do too; make some new ones for your zoo.

Wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.

My children have loved this book. With the pictures of the plants there are names next to each one. My kids liked to point and say the names of all of the flowers.

Pretty pictures and educational too!

Informative and Colorful. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book would be perfect for a child who enjoys helping their parent with a garden, or a child mastering their color knowledge. It briefly explains the process of how a garden is started from seed/bulb, shows the growth of different colorful flowers and name the most common garden flowers. The pictures are basic but bold and color fills the pages which allows you to appreciate the next step in the process and the next page in the book.

A big hit with my toddler 5 out of 5 stars.

My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. She even calls it the Rainbow book. I bought it because I am really into gardening and she loves flowers. It is a great book to teach colors as well.

Editorial Review:

This educational and enjoyable book helps children understand how to plant bulbs, seeds, and seedlings, and nurture their growth. “The stylized representations of flower species are labeled throughout, allowing young children to get an idea of how each flower type contributes to the rainbow effect.”--Booklist

Good Book for Small Children - a review of Growing Veg. Soup 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book has gotten good reviews by others but I am a little less enthusiastic about it.

Certainly I love the concept of teaching about gardening and how food makes it's way from the soil to our plates; but the artwork, I think, gets in the way of making this a superior 5-Star text.

For example, the abstract art [bold and attractive] is okay for demonstrating seeds sitting in the soil, but it is not very good for actually showing what a squash blossom looks like. For all you can tell, it's a open tulip on a vine. Likewise the corn is shown as being orange instead of yellow.

Four Stars. This book gives children an idea of how food goes from the ground to the bowl, but if you are looking for a book that will give your young child an accurate picture of what growing veggies look like, you'll have to keep searching.

Editorial Review:

“A fresh presentation of the gardening cycle with a joyful conclusion, and the added attraction of an easy and tasty recipe for vegetable soup on the flyleaf.”--School Library Journal

Simple text enhanced with a big dose of creativity! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My husband bought this for our two-year old, and we love reading it together with her. The text is simple, as it traces the journey of Leaf Man...the leaves used are magnificent in their colors...some bold, some subdued, but all unique and beautiful. I have since done some basic art projects with my daughter using this book as inspiration. We collect leaves wherever we go and hope to create a little book of our own!

Editorial Review:

Fall has come, the wind is gusting, and Leaf Man is on the move. Is he drifting east, over the marsh and ducks and geese? Or is he heading west, above the orchards, prairie meadows, and spotted cows? No one's quite sure, but this much is certain: A Leaf Man's got to go where the wind blows.

With illustrations made from actual fall leaves and die-cut pages on every spread that reveal gorgeous landscape vistas, here is a playful, whimsical, and evocative book that celebrates the natural world and the rich imaginative life of children.

Includes an author's note and leaf-identifying labels.
