Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski."

Maddie, a girl who had stood by while Wanda was taunted about her dresses, feels sick inside: "True, she had not enjoyed listening to Peggy ask Wanda how many dresses she had in her closet, but she had said nothing.... She was a coward.... She had helped to make someone so unhappy that she had had to move away from town." Repentant, Maddie and her friend Peggy head up to Boggins Heights to see if the Petronskis are still there. When they discover the house is empty, Maddie despairs: "Nothing would ever seem good to her again, because just when she was about to enjoy something--like going for a hike with Peggy to look for bayberries or sliding down Barley Hill--she'd bump right smack into the thought that she had made Wanda Petronski move away." Who else but a member of the Moffat family could, during kindergarten recess, accidentally hitch a ride out of town on a boxcar? Or wind up trapped in the breadbox outside the delicatessen store? Or kindly offer to escort the Salvation Army man to his destination--only to accidentally bump him out of his own horse-drawn wagon? The Moffats is a paradigm of old-fashioned family fun. Four children and a hard-working widowed mother live together on New Dollar Street in the village of Cranbury. Their seemingly quiet lives are studded with almost daily unexpected adventures, with droll results.

This charming book has been making readers smile for over half a century. It reflects a gentler era, when the jolly chief of police had time to sit on the curb to hear a little girl's "crimes" and a little boy's escapade on a train was not cause for media panic, just a simple redirecting by the agreeable engineer. Eleanor Estes, author of the Newbery Honor book The Hundred Dresses, and Caldecott medalist Louis Slobodkin (Many Moons) make a lovely team in this story of benign humor and sweet times. This story is about the Pyes (Rachael, her brother Jerry, Mama, Papa, Gracie, Uncle Benny, and Ginger) who go on vacation so Papa ,a famous ornithologist, can figure out what a puffin is doing there. His bad memory gets him in a lot of trouble very early on in the book. Little did he know he wouldn't get much work done due to an abandoned kitten left on their cabin's door step. Pinkey Pye they called her, who would do anything just so someone will say she's cute. Mama brought plenty of coats (even though it was 90 degrees outside) just in case they were walking along the beach and a snow storm arived and matches in case they got lost. Her motto is "Be Prepared." Uncle Benny is Mama's brother even though he is 5 years younger than Rachael and Jerry(Mama's children). He wonders how his crickets are vanishing one by one. He is on a never ending quest to stop sucking his thumb. Gracie is a grumpy old cat who feins boredom through out although she is very interested in a creature lurking in the shadows of the attic... Ginger is the clever dog, but feels a little left out when Pinky steps into the picture. Will her jelousy overcome her common sense? Filled with laughs. Some of the suspence in this book will keep you laughing and crying over their detailed antics. I recommend reading Ginger Pye before this one though. All in All a good book.

In Pinky Pye, the Pye family adds another member. A furious black kitten abandoned on their doorstep endears itself to the whole family--even Ginger--and foreshadows another addition to the Pye family that will change their lives forever.

The story Rufus M. by Eleanor Estes is about a kid named Rufus Moffat. Rufus has some trouble sometimes, but he practices until he gets it right. Rufus writes his name like this: Rufus M. Sometimes Rufus gets trapped, but he finds his way out. Sometimes Rufus can get rough. Rufus M. is also clever. He also makes up imaginary friends. One time he makes up the invisible piano player. Rufus is almost unbeatable.

Rufus acts like a seven year old. That's why I think he's a seven year old. Rufus writes his name sloppy at first. Then he practices and practices and he gets better and better. He gets better at doing tasks that use to be hard. Rufus is a great kid, unlike any other (no offense). This is the story how Rufus became unbeatable.

The characters are Rufus, Sylvie, Jane, and Joe. Rufus has messy hair, he is seven, and he is rough. Sylvie is nice. She is also clever, and she is about nine. Janie is a girl who is clever, but not exactly as clever as Sylvie. She has a crush on a friend of hers. She is eight years old. Joey is Rufus's brother and he is nine years old. He likes to play with Rufus and he is rough like Rufus. I believe in the chacracters of the story and I am interested to find more about them. I can picture the individuals in my mind. They get on with one another by playing with each other. I like Rufus best because he is funny.

The author is a good writer. She uses words like "urge" and "dozing." Her writing would make me imagine the story even if there were no pictures. The author treats me like a big kid. It is like it is written by an expert. I think the book is great. The cover also looks great. It makes me want to read the book right away. It urges me to talk about it to my friends. The pictures are interesting and they make the story better. The printing is pretty small, but the words are easy to read.

The book is great in my opinion. I would suggest boys ages seven to nine and girls eight to eleven would enjoy it. I give this book five stars.

First of all this book is called ginger pye a great book. And this book is about a boy and a dog best friends this is a tastefull boo putten into very good words by the author elenore Estes. It is detailed very well and its about.... so one day a boy saw a dog being sold at a farm he seemed smarter than all the others and the boy wanted him like you love at first sight this was wanting at first sight. But he costed a dollar the kid was poor got it no allowance. So an older boy said he would give them a dollar. So they dusted and got ther dolar the whole family thought he was smart and cute. One day during a thanksgiving dinner the boy left him outside and when he came back out he was gone. And the began there lonley search for him but ended finding him years later.

The Witch Family is about two girls who while drawing witches pretend to banish the head witch, also known as Old Witch, to a glass hill because she is very wicked. If you multiply the "Old" with one million, you get some idea of how old she was! The girls also let Old Witch do her abracadabra so that she can have a witch girl named Hannah and a witch baby. Old Witch gets to be wicked only on Halloween. At the end, the two girls take pity on Old Witch and turn the glass hill into a real hill with grass. After that, Old Witch is not wicked anymore except on Halloween. I think this is a good book to read on Halloween.

Sweet, but avoid the TOO-sweet audio version!! 4 out of 5 stars.

The Witch Family is nice, non-scary magical tale with more heft than contemporary "Color Fairies"-type books. It's a sweet, old-fashioned book -- but heavy emphasis on the sweet. It's the sort of book where things get called by kiddie mis-pronounced names like "noo-doos" for noodles, over and over again. When you're reading to yourself, or reading aloud, that can be part of the charm. But when your kids are listening to 5 hours of audio book on a long car trip, you have to hope that the narrator doesn't lay it on too thick.

As it happens, this narrator lays it on triple-thick: syrup on top of honey on top of sugar. Every single sentence, happy or not, is pronounced with a huge, honey-dripping smile...for 5 hours straight. I grudgingly gave it 4 stars because my girls did enjoy it, and they're the target audience in the end. But as an adult, it was flat-out excruciating.

There has never been a museum in Cranbury...until now.

This book is perhaps my favorite of all time--though I am no longer a child, I loved it when I was, and love it still.

It is a quiet little book--events happen, to be sure, but though there is a burglarly, there are no life-and-death situations. It concerns the thoughts and doings of one Connie and her friends and compatriots in the Brooklyn cul-de-sac where she lives.

A fascinating presentation of children as children and as people, dealing with life as it comes to them. Also, a wonderful portrayal of life in a 1940's/50's New York that is long past.

There is a sequel to this book, "The Tunnel of Hugsy Goode." I believe Hugsy appears first in "The Alley."

Truly a classic. A book which reflects and shapes me still, years after I've read it, and each time I reread it.

'Miranda the Great' Will Leave You Purring In Delight... 4 out of 5 stars.

Miranda is accustomed to the good life. She and her favorite daughter, Punka, have always been well taken care of by a wonderful family, in one of Rome's most beautiful villas. But then tragedy strikes, and Miranda and Punka are separated from their family, and must try and survive on the grisly Roman streets. Alone. But as the two cats make their way through the city, they find that many Romans have had to flee, and left their beloved cats behind in the midst of it all. Now, with the help of Punka, Miranda has begun collecting all of the motherless kittens she finds, as they make their way to the Colosseum. But, once there, before Miranda is able to call herself Miranda the Great, Queen of the Colosseum, she must rid the area of a hungry lion, nasty cats, and angry dogs.

Eleanor Estes is one of the great children's authors of the mid-1900's, penning such classics as GINGER PYE and THE HUNDRED DRESSES. MIRANDA THE GREAT is no exception. Filled with a humorous, heartwarming story regarding homeless animals, and what the life of a street cat is like, MIRANDA THE GREAT will win over readers both young and old. As will the lovely illustrations found on almost every page, by Edward Ardizzone. Cat lovers come forth; MIRANDA THE GREAT will leave you purring in delight.
