A "Universal" treat! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I think Douglas Florian's new book, 'comets, stars, the moon and mars' is his most expressive yet.

Beginning with the poem "skywatch," two children look at the sky. The next poem is "the universe."

Die cut "planet" holes move the reader deeper and further through space. From "mercury" to "venus" to "the earth" to "the moon" the poems continue in order according to their distance from the Sun. Comets, black holes and the mystery of what lies beyond are also addressed. Florian's ability to weave facts and fun are on full display here.

The bright color palette echoes the amazing views from the Hubble space telescope. This generation of kids has grown up looking at Seymour Simon's books about the solar system and the Universe. They have seen the colors that are out there.

Check out the Harcourt page about the book and download Florian's Poetry Kit. The "Practical Poetry Pointers" are some of the most best tips for writing poetry with kids that I have ever seen.

You have Gotta-Have-It.

Ages 4-8? Should be 4 to 80! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

An excellent collection of poems about winter - the joys and woes. A favorite is the poem by the same title, Winter Eyes. Rich language and stunning imagery in a deceptively simple form. I'm sending it to my mother, who recently left Minnesota for New Mexico, she can always have the best of winter with this book.

How to get kids to enjoy poetry 5 out of 5 stars.

Douglas Florian creates delightful and clever descriptions not only in words that appeal to all the senses but sometimes in the placement of the words on the page to help illustrate the poems. My daughter and I love this book, our favorite of all Mr. Florian's work.

Editorial Review:

Snowballs, ice skating, sledding! Frozen toes, icy slush, runny nose. Well, winter's not all fun and games. But well-loved, best-selling poet Douglas Florian will melt your doubts about Mother Nature's chilly grip with twenty-eight winter-inspired poems accompanied by his crisp, trademark watercolor illustrations. Young readers are sure to warm up to the uniquely keen vision of this wholly original volume. Whatever the time of year, Winter Eyes is just right for the season.

Editorial Review:

A perfect springtime accompaniment to actual bugs, Insectlopedia swarms, buzzes, and slithers with poetry and paint. Douglas Florian, creator of the award-winning Beast Feast, On the Wing, and In the Swim, has succeeded again, this time with a delightful infestation of 21 spider and insect poems and paintings, awash in watercolor and collage on primed brown paper bags.

Well-loved for his clever wordplay (complete with endearingly shameless visual and verbal puns), Florian manages to seamlessly blend science with pure whimsy. Take "The Praying Mantis," for example: "Upon a twig/I sit and pray/For something big/To wend my way;/A caterpillar,/Moth,/or bee--/I swallow them/Religiously." His rhythmic chant "The Weevils" begins, "We are weevils./We are evil./We've aggrieved/Since time primeval." Add a few inchworms, moths, and whirligig beetles, and you have the blisteringly funny, stingingly clever Insectlopedia, the perfect book for emerging entomologists and budding poets alike. Editorial Review:

Douglas Florian--creator of Insectlopedia, In the Swim, and other poetic tributes to creatures great and small--turns his unbounded talent for wordplay and shameless punnery to the order of mammals in Mammalabilia. We'll let "The Aardvarks" speak for itself:

Aardvarks aare odd.
Aardvarks aare staark.
Aardvarks look better
By faar in the daark.

Twenty-one short, original poems and splendid paintings celebrate (or jovially mock) animals from giraffes ("Rubber necker/ Double-decker/ Cloud-checker/ Star-trekker") to porcupines. The illustrations--painted in gouache on primed brown paper bags--are as tongue-in-cheek as his words; the coyote howls with visible "o's," the otter bathes in a claw-foot tub reading a book called "H20," and the rhebok is sporting sneakers. A pure pleasure for poetry fans and animal lovers alike, Mammalabilia is a welcome addition to the Florian fold. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

Editorial Review:

We are mad for poet-painter Douglas Florian. We were buzzed by Insectlopedia, moony for Mammalabilia, and batty for his other beautifully biological, biologically beautiful books as well. We love Florian for his clever, downright shameless wordplay. One of our favorite poems in Lizards, Frogs, and Polliwogs is "The Wood Frog":

I am a frozen frogsicle.
I froze beneath a logsicle.
My mind is in a fogsicle
Inside this icy bogsicle.
My temperature is ten degrees.
I froze my nose, my toes, my knees.
But I don't care, I feel at ease,
For I am full of antifreeze.
Another favorite is "The Polliwogs:"

We polliwoggle.
We polliwiggle.
We shake in lakes,
Make wakes,
And wriggle.
We quiver,
We shiver,
We jiggle,
We jog.
We're yearning
To turn ourselves
Into a frog.
We love Florian equally for his playful paintings that manage to be visual puns as well as suitable-for-framing pieces of art. A subtle and delightful use of color combine with brilliant composition and some collage work to create a marvelous menagerie--this time accompanying 21 reptile and amphibian poems. Neither cobra nor chameleon escape pun-ishment from this talented wordsmith. We will patiently await the next beastly poetic parade from Florian! (Ages 5 to 10) --Karin Snelson

this is but one of Douglas Florian's many delightful works for young eyes and minds; i recommend without reserve.

Editorial Review:

Twenty–nine poems about spring are illustrated with Douglas Florian's distinctive and buoyant watercolours and extol the many virtues of the season–from those muddy puddles and emerging bulbs to rain showers and rainbows and that first day without mittens. Concrete poems, humour, ingenious wordplay, and audience appeal make this a consummate companion to the acclaimed poet's first three seasonal collections.

Children's Poetry from Douglass Florian 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Douglass Florian writes children's poetry and creates artworks to go with it. You may know some of his other works - mammalabila and insectopedia. in the swim continues his look at animals. His poetry is short and fun and the artwork is very beautiful to look at. As a teacher, I recommend his books for a poetry unit and a unit studying animals.

Editorial Review:

Even the most educated marine biologist could learn something from this whimsical, beautifully illustrated collection of 21 poems about sea life. Some of the poems are pure silly fun ("There are uglier fish than a blennie-- / But not many."), and others are gracefully infiltrated with animal facts ("Did you know the ocean's oysters / Sometimes change from girls to boysters?"). Douglas Florian, whose Beast Feast and On the Wing received high praise, accompanies each of his delightful poems with a stunning watercolor painting. In addition to capturing the liquid blur of an underwater world, the illustrations incorporate subtle visual jokes; for example, the salmon are doing the high jump, and the seahorses are wearing saddles. It's no fish story--Florian's combination of intelligent, funny rhymes and rich, irresistible paintings will make a splash in your home! (Ages 3 and older)

It is very funny. I'll give the The Walrus In His Chair a "two thumbs up." I memorized The Bat for a Poetry Reading for school. I give The Barracuda some very earth-eating competition. niknnik (Evan, 9)

A banquet of assorted beasts 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This author/illustrator has a marvelous imagination, not to mention a knack for alliteration and quirky rhymes. As if the words weren't enough, the capricious illustrations add to the enjoyment of each page, each new "beast".

The list is indeed a feast: the gamut of strange creatures, great and small, short and tall: the walrus, the anteater, the whale, the pigeon, the sloth, the toad, the kangaroo, mole and even the kiwi, each with eccentricities that engage and challenge children to learn about the variety of nature. And the creative rhymes (often producing unexpected giggles!) are accompanied by equally enchanting illustrations, colorful and humorous.

"I don't claim to
Love the pigeon
But I like it
Just a smidgeon."

Florian's wonderful poems and paintings are perfect for reading to a child at bedtime, especially when that boy or girl, stimulated by sounds and colors, blurts, "Let me read it!" Beast Feast, like all of Florian's imaginative, fantastic books is a treasure to own, a joy to read.

"The kangaroo loves to leap.
Into the air it zooms,
While baby's fast asleep
Inside its kangaroom."

Luan Gaines/2005.

Editorial Review:

A children's poet for all seasons 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Complementing Winter Eyes and Summersaults, Autumnblings is another of Florian's delightful poetic romps through the season, a series of silly poems accompanied by the usual quirky and humorous illustrations the author does so well.

"Maple seeds in fall turn brown,
then they fall off and all fall down-
like fallicopters to the ground."

Florian is a personal favorite because his lively poetry and images stimulate young minds and plant the seeds of reading enjoyment. Learning is a positive experience in every book this author/illustrator contributes to young minds, a consistent energy that is engaging and fanciful, to be shared or read aloud.

"The temperature falls
Degree by degree.
It falls through the air
And lands upon me."

Luan Gaines/2005.

Editorial Review:

What do you like
about autumn?

Flying kites?
Apple picking?
Trick or treat?
Frisbee flicking?

What do you not like
about autumn?

Back to school?
Winds that gust?
Bare trees?
Rains that rust?

This collection of poems and paintings welcomes fall with all the crisp energy of a joyful tumbling run. A companion volume to the highly praised Winter Eyes and Summersaults, Autumnblings proves once again that Douglas Florian is a poet for all seasons.

Editorial Review:

Douglas Florian (Insectlopedia, The Mammalabilia) is at it again. The 21 poems and paintings in his new collection, Bow Wow Meow Meow, will tickle young dog and cat lovers—and just about everyone else, too. Florian’s painting of a poodle, essentially a riot of curls and a pink hair bow, accompanies a four-line concrete poem cleverly typeset in swirls on the opposite page:
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls,
Which makes poodle boys look like poodle girls.
The curls may have whirls, while the whirls may have swirls.
Poodles have oodles and oodles of curls.
Florian has fun with bulldogs, pointers, Siamese, and Manx, but he doesn’t limit himself to domestic breeds. Wolves, lions, and ocelot ("Why ocelots have lots of spots puzzles ocelot") are also featured. All the paintings have wonderful juvenile appeal—-many of them are flat-out funny—-and the leopard painting, in particular, is worth the price of the book. In fact, you may need two copies: one for framing and one to savor with the kids. (All ages) --Jennifer Lindsay
