Editorial Review:

Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

Collector's item/memorabilia for adults, pages upside down 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this for my son, but I'm going to get another copy that ISN'T the anniversary addition. This version contains eight pages of information about the earlier version of the book, letters between the author and publisher, etc. This sort of stuff is more for those of us who remember the book from our childhoods than it is for the kids themselves.

Curiously, the first four pages of my copy of the book are bound in upside-down. Does anyone else have this in theirs? I might have a real collector's item indeed...

As for the story itself, it's a five-star kid's story. Wonderful. But if you are buying it for your kids, I'd get the other version.

Editorial Review:

In 1968, a girl named Lisa fell in love with a little brown bear wearing green overalls with one button missing, and thousands of readers followed suit, making Corduroy one of the best-loved children’s books of all time. Now, forty years later, Viking proudly celebrates Don Freeman’s classic with a very special anniversary edition. With an extra-large trim size and special features including an embossed cover and four bonus spreads of never-before-seen materials, this handsome volume is a must-have for any Corduroy fan.

We love Corduroy! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Corduroy books are my daughter's (15 mo) favorites and this one is no exception. She still wants me to read it to her everyday even though the "snow days" are over for the year. The size is great for a toddler and the story is just the right length.

Cute, simple book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for a toddler. My 18mth old will love it (Christmas present). It is simple with colorful pictures.

Editorial Review:

Join Corduroy and his friends as they zip down a hill on their sleds, build a snowman, and have a snowball fight! It’s a winter wonderland with a steaming cup of hot chocolate to warm everyone up at the end of the day.

This brightly colored shaped board book is perfect for the youngest fans of Corduroy, one of the best-loved characters in children’s books for nearly forty years.

Loved by My 2 Year Old 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My 2 1/2 year old adores this book. In fact, I have had to make a rule of no more than twice a day. He calls it the "laundry book". I must disagree about the caged bear scene being frightening. My son specifically requests the caged bear scene and is obviously not scared in the least. It is a sweet tale of a little girl and her little bear. I love how the author uses some big words in a children's book. My son's vocabulary has grown exponentially!

Entertaining-but maybe not for young toddlers 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I thought the book was entertaining and cute, and an introduction to what goes on at a laundromat. However, I don't think I would get this book for a young todder (under 4) due to the fact that there was one scene where Corduroy is alone in the dark of laudromat, inside a wired laundry cart, and he looks terrified. The picture is very scary and sad. I think it's too much for a little kid. But overall, it's cute, and the ending is good.

Editorial Review:

Don Freeman's classic character, Corduroy, is even more popular today then he was when he first came on the scene over thirty years ago. These favorite titles are ready for another generation of children to love.

Good book for toddlers 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

My almost two-year-old son loves this book so much that on occasion I have hidden it so I could get a break. The illustrations are cute and very relevant. The story has only a few words per page so it is appropriate for young readers. My only complaint is that the flaps are not as sturdy as alot of other flap books. Still, we have definitely gotten our money's worth out of Corduroy's Christmas.

The Best Christmas Book For A Child. 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Every child needs a Christmas book in their collection and this is the perfect one. Join Corduroy when he writes to Santa and he goes out caroling. This beautifuly colored book is filled with flaps to lift and things to find. Corduroy is a cute little bear that your children will love forever. What better way to celebrate Christmas than with a cuddly bear. Your child will want to read this book again and again and so will you!

Editorial Review:

Youngsters lift the flaps to help Corduroy trim the tree, bake cookies, wrap presents, hang stockings, and prepare for the arrival of Santa.

Nice story, but a departure from the original series 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This struck me as "Corduroy for the 21st century". I love the original Corduroy books, and this one just has none of the feel of those, either in terms of narrative or in terms of illustration. Corduroy and his 4 silly animal friends do not interract with humans, but exist in some blissful upper middle class suburbia and participate only in gift giving as the meaning of the holiday. True, the bear we love does show his true self in the moment when he changes his Santa letter to ask only for gifts to his friends, but this is the only soft moment in an otherwise overly modern disney-like book. The sewn-on pocket Corduroy is replaced with a shallow pajama wearing pretender. I want my stoic old friend back...

Editorial Review:

Christmas is coming, and Corduroy has a list of gifts he'd like from Santa-until he discovers the true meaning of Christmas is not about train sets and ice skates, but about good friends. Celebrate the season with Corduroy in this Christmas story that is sure to be a holiday read-aloud favorite.

A great book to talk about the beach to your child 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book just before we went on a beach vacation for our 18 month old. He loves Corduroy. This book has great pictures and the flaps make it very interesting. I looked really hard for a good beach book for my son. This one is the best!

Great for young children 5 out of 5 stars.

As with all of the Corduroy Lift the Flap books (Easter, Christmas, Beach, Halloween, Firehouse, Zoo, Birthday--no longer in print, and Library), this one rates 5 stars......and we own them all! These rate as our absolute favorites in our book collection. The text is not lengthy and the flaps keep my two 1/2 year olds hands busy enough for me to read the text before he is on to the next page. For this reason, they were the only books we read for a long time. The illustrations are fantastic! The story takes you on the course of Corduroy's day-- packing for the beech, finding a spot in the sand, taking a swim, flying a kite, getting ice cream and going on rides on the boardwalk, and looking for treasures in the sand. Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Corduroy and his friends are heading to the beach for a fun-filled day of playing by the sea. First they jump over the waves and fly kites, then it’s time for a tasty picnic lunch and a special treat—ice cream! In the afternoon, Corduroy and his pals collect seashells and build sandcastles. Seven spreads filled with thirty-five flaps will keep small fingers happily busy.

Corduroy discover the moon 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the second book I bought for my daughter as she sees Corduroy on tivo and she asked me for the books. It's a nice story about a night time escape of Cordoroy in order to find a gift for Lisa's birthday.
It's perfect before going to sleep as it's short but has a good plot. It's one of the books I read and reread to my daughter as she always asks me. She likes very much the idea of the bear going alone and then the happy end. The illustration are also nice.

Editorial Review:

A classic character in children’s literature for nearly forty years is back for a brand-new adventure! Corduroy the beloved bear slips out very early one morning to get a birthday present for Lisa. He spies what he thinks is a yellow balloon up in the sky, thinking that would be perfect for her. But when the sun rises, the balloon (really the full moon) disappears. And now Corduroy is lost. Lisa finds him, but not before Corduroy succeeds in getting just the right gift—a lollipop as yellow and round as the moon. This brand-new Corduroy picture book is written in the whimsical style of Don Freeman and illustrated in the exact scratchboard technique he used to create Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy.

Maybe the EDITORS Should Go to School 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My 21-month-old son enjoys this cute book immensely, but it contains a serious error. The book states that Corduroy makes "a big blue 'B,' and a big green 'C,' but the illustration shows a red (rather than blue) B and a purple (rather than green) C. That is an unforgivable mistake for a book that should be helping children learn to identify colors.

mother of toddler 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If your child is starting pre-school, this is a great book for showing your little one what to expect because Corduroy and his friends do the same things that your child will do in school -- paint, do puzzles, read, play on the swing set, etc.
Many of the books about going to school have the characters doing other things (like dogs burying bones, ducks going swimming, etc.)

Also, our book does not contain the error that the reviewer below mentions. The colors of the letters in the illustrations match what the text says.

Editorial Review:

Corduroy has a lot to do at school today. He has to bring in something that starts with the letter "B," feed the classroom pets, listen to a story, paint, have a snack, and help clean up. And all of his favorite friends are there to share the school day with him. In seven colorful spreads, children can lift the flaps and see what's hiding in the cubby, behind the swing, under the drawing pad or in many more inventive places.

And Corduroy, the lovable, cuddly bear, is just the right, reassuring presence to make children feel comfortable with all the early experiences school can bring.

My little one wasn't quite 2 when I got it for Christmas time and it went over okay, now that he is over 2 he really likes it even during the summer!

Editorial Review:

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house Corduroy and his friends were trimming the tree, singing carols, munching cookies, and waiting for Santa. Join in the festivities with Corduroy as he helps make the holiday jolly. With its appealing die-cut shape and sturdy pages, this board book is the perfect stocking stuffer. Merry Christmas, Corduroy!
