Three Little Kittens was my favorite book as a child and now that i have a son of my own I am able to pass on a favorite to him. He loves the vivid images that this book offers, there are so many different pictures in their that at 16 months old he likes to point and hear me say the name of an object.

A favorite old classic... 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought six of my favorite childhood books for my great-grandson..."Little Black Sambo", "The Three Billy Goats Gruff", "Henny Penny", "Chicken Little", "The Three Little Kittens", and "Classic Tales of Brer Rabbit". My great-grandie is 2-1/2 and I can't wait to read these wonderful stories to him.

The favorite Mother Goose rhyme about the three careless kittens who lost their mittens is given added appeal with Galdone's bold and colorful illustrations.

Paul Galdone's adaptation of The Gingerbread Buy is a wonderful version of the story. It is great for teachers and for families. I use it in my classroom every year with my first grade students.

Disappointed it doesn't come with a BOOK 1 out of 5 stars.

My two-year-old daughter says:

It's funny. Run away and catch the cow. And catch the horsie. And catch the guys. And a guy talking. And a cookie talking. The food talking. A cow run away. And a fox eat the cookie man.

Classic for grandchildren 5 out of 5 stars.

We selected this book and several others because we want our grandchildren to have classics.

Editorial Review:

You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Boy! "The classic tale of the old couple, with no children of their own, who bake a gingerbread boy to keep them company...A wonderfully frenetic cross-country chase is depicted in Galdone's humourous colour wash drawings. Of the eight editions of this well-known story now in print, this hilarious version is the most delectable."

Traditional telling of a classic tale with a more positive ending 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Her ability to cook empowers this little red hen to motivate her housemates. Help me with some of the housework if you want cake. A final illustration shows all the animals working, sweeping and dusting!

After reading the story as it is written, follow along with Heather Forest's Little Red Hen from the album, Sing me a Story. End on that final illustration with her words, "Sharing the work makes working fun."

Different versions may use different characters. This one uses the traditional Dog, Cat, Mouse.

Timeless Classic 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book for my children and did it bring back memories! I had it read to me when I was little. So the story line is cute and teaches a valuable lesson with the moral the lazy cat, dog, and mouse do not get the snack. All of my children from 2-6 love this story, it never grows old.

The Little Red Hen 5 out of 5 stars.

This version is a classic one. The story and illustrations are very inviting for any child. I love the classic moral of the story too.

Editorial Review:

Galdone's dynamic, amusing pictures add much humor to the familiar tale of the industrious hen and lazy cat, dog, and mouse.

Three Billy Goats-GREAT 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was just reminded of this teriffic retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. Galdone never failed in capturing the kids' imagination and story hour was always the better with one of his books. A MUST HAVE!

A current favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This has fast become one of my 2 year old's favorites. She can already recite the book almost word for word using different voices for each Billy Goat Gruff. We get a real kick out of listening to her "read" to herself!

Editorial Review:

Paul Galdone's classic retelling of a lively nursery tale. "Galdone's dramatic, colourful illustrations are well suited to this old Scandinavian tale. Even the scale of the pictures seems to tell the story; the first Billy Goat Gruff looks small against a looming bridge; soon the troll completely fills the page, and then the big Billy Goat Gruff spreads across two. The third Billy Goat Gruff's gruesome challenge is deleted, and he butts his wild-haired, blue-nosed, yellow-toothed enemy into the water, marches triumphantly up a daisy-covered hillside, and makes himself fat."

I'm sorry I have to give this mindless crap a one-star! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 34 people found this review helpful.

You may find this review unhelpful.

In a society when we are trying to teach our children the truth about the beautiful animals known as wolves, you'd think we'd trash this fairy tale. No - this mindless crap.

On a wolf hatelisting, one of their weak arguements to bring extinction to wolves was, "How do you think the three little pigs felt?" I will NOT capitalize their names.

This tale speaks of the wolves as evil creatures. The three little pigs build their three houses. The wolf wants to eat them, and they eventually turn against the evil wolf, and the BLABLABLA.

I quit PETA because of this mindless crap. They, and this awful book send the ignorant message, "Hey. Think of all the cute helpless bunnies and piggies (UGH) evil wolves kill every year. We're striving for rights for all animals here not to be killed." It's tales like "The three little pigs" that fuel hatred of wolves.

Um, PETA, ever wonder - maybe wolves are animals too? PETA THINKS, "OH YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT! I WAS SO DUMB STARING AT PHONY 'HELPLESS LITTLE BAMBI AND THUMPER AND THE THREE LITTLE PIGS' PICTURES I FORGOT THAT!'

First of all, bunnies and pigs are not helpless. Yes - a bunny gave my brother a black eye with its big, fast feet. And what of piggies? They run. They have horns.

And what of Big Bad Wolf? First of all, compared to some dogs, wolves are tiny. And they're the same size as, if not smaller, than domestic pigs.

And 'Bad'? People; it's not like wolves choose to kill. It's their nature. In fact, if wolves could eat grass like pigs, they would. And no meat. But they can't. Accept that. Must I remind you that humans kill animals as well? And also, wolves are not evil. Same goes for humans. Wolves mate for life, unlike so many faithless humans (affairs, adulterers?), and they don't murder each other like humans do. In fact, wolves are often more caring for their children than humans are.

Third of all, pigs don't build houses, and wolves don't huff and puff.

Wolves won't attack you if you leave them alone. Only rabid animals would, but rabid humans would attack others as well.

If a wolf wandered onto your turf, you'd be tempted to shoot it. The same goees for wolves. If you wandered onto their turf, they'd be tempted to kill you too. It's wrong to say either of you are evil.

And domestic animals? Wolves won't try to kill them if other food is available.

You say Humans are good to baby wolves. I say wolves are good to baby humans. Ever read the story of wolf children Kamala and Amala? It's high time you read it. It's a true story.

So you see, if you wandered into the Alaskan wilderness, and you brought your beloved dog, you'd want to kill that dog in a desperate moment for food. Same goes for wolves and you.

So you see; kindness is usually given only fully within the same species. Then, beyond the members of your same species (AND SNAKES DON'T EVEN CARE, BUT THAT'S IN THEIR NATURE), survival and nature step in to block kindness. It does not make any species evil.

But that's the point of the Three Little Pigs now, isn't it? To teach children that wolves are evil - and nothing else.

I have no problem against pigs, humans, or dogs. I don't have a grudge against any species, bcause when they kill to eat (YES EVEN DEER KILL GRASS) it's in their nature. Nature designed them to be that way.

It's these stupidly written ignorant fairy tales I have a grudge against. Making one species seem 'good' while another 'bad'! WEAK PEOPLE LOOKING FOR A SCAPEGOAT TO TODAY'S PROBLEMS WRITE THIS CRAP! AND THEIR CHOSEN SCAPEGOAT IS ALWAYS THE WOLF.

And tell me - if the wolf in this tale is evil for needing to eat meat, how about the pigs? They ate the dead wolf, after killing him. So if he is bad, they should be bad too.

Good pigs? Bad wolf? NO. Do me a favour, and don't give your children this mindless crap. There are tons of stories out there written from all animals; points of view, without any bias of "one species = good the other = bad." Those are wholesome tales.

Editorial Review:

All three pigs set out to seek their fortune, but two of them come to a sorry end.

Henny Penny needs some worky lurky 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 15 people found this review helpful.

NOT to be confused with the tale of the little red hen. Weýve all heard, at one time or another, the tale of silly Henny Penny. Hit on the head by an acorn the silly chicken is convinced that the sky is falling. Running to tell the king she meets up with a range of different avian types until finally coming to crafty Foxy Loxy. This 1968 creation undoubtedly won many a supporter back in its day. A classic story, it deserved a classy set-up. Unfortunately, the book has not aged as well as it might have. Illustrator Paul Galdoneýs story is a bit dull for a while, and then it suddenly becomes a little shocking at the end. In true fairy tale fashion, Foxy Loxy and his brood have a ýfine feastý from their silly feathered friends. Thereýs nothing particularly gratuitous about this. You donýt see Henny Penny & Friends actually eaten. Nor are there any leftover remains when we view the parting shot of Foxy Loxy and his family. On the other hand, children who (for whatever reason) have grown attached to the silly birds arenýt going to enjoy the black page that simply reads, ýFrom that day to this Turkey Lurkey, Goosey Loosey, Ducky Lucky, Cocky Locky, and Henny Penny have never been seen againý. I dunno. Maybe Iým being too modern. If the children of the late 1960s could take this book, shouldnýt we assume our kids can today?

Perhaps. On the other hand, thereýs no getting around the fact that the book is (forgive me, but it is true) not particularly well illustrated. Itýs not badly illustrated, mind you. Just the same, the pictures arenýt anything to crow about. Theyýre flat. Colored occasionally in red, green or yellow. The three color palette may suit some, but it does grow a little wearisome to the wandering eye. If youýre dead set on introducing your kids to the tale of Henny Penny, I suggest you seek out other more entrancing versions of this tale. For all its age and maturity, this is a simultaneously dull and shocking book to be reading the kiddie set at night.

Editorial Review:

Convinced the sky is falling, Henny Penny and a band of gullible friends march off to tell the king, only to meet their end at the hands of a wily fox.

My son absolutely loves this story. He enjoys the fact that he can follow the words with the audio narrator and at the same time get spooky feelings about the Teeny-Tiny Woman! I am so glad we found this book - it is very unique and keeps his attention - no matter how many times he reads it. Definetly a keeper for our library!

Great Big Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you've ever been to a slumber party you've probably heard someone tell this spooky-fun tale. Illustrator Paul Galdone gives the royal treatment to this classic story of a teeny-tiny woman out on a teeny-tiny walk who finds herself a teeny-tiny bone and thinks of making a teeny-tiny pot of soup for herself. Humour and suspense in generous amounts follow the events that spiral out from her one simple act of bringing the bone home. The silly surprise ending is classic slumber-party fare...eek! This is a good story for around Halloween time due to its bedtime suspense and ghostly plot. Be sure to share this one with a new generation of kids. It's sure to be loved.

Editorial Review:

A teeny-tiny woman finds a teeny-tiny bone in a graveyard and takes it home to make soup, but changes her mind during the night.

Rewriting Fairy Tales 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I find it amazing that a simple child's tale can be so altered by our PC society. No longer is there a Papa and Mama Bear with their cub Baby Bear. Now its a variation of sizes in the trio of bears, and they're not a family. Family is politically incorrect, don't you see, and we can't teach family to children, nosirree, because we may offend those people living together that are not a traditional family. My advice? Find another Three Bears book, and leave this one to collect the dust it deserves.

Editorial Review:

From School Library Journal reS-Gr 1-In this version of Paul Galdone's retelling of the classic tale (HM, 1972), the female narrator's voice is pleasant and expressive, with different inflections for the wee bear, the middle-sized bear, and the great big bear. The tape has audible page turning signals of a bear yawning or humming on one side, and no page turning signals on the other side. A light musical background accompanies the narration. This book and cassette package will be useful in day care centers, public libraries, and primary school libraries.

An amusing bedtime story.. 4 out of 5 stars.

This was one of the first books I ever checked out of the library in elementary school and years later, it's story is still the same haunting, yet amusing, story. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young children and wants to campfire storytell or anything of that sort. The story has mild violence, all of which is up to the readers imagination. I can attest to losing sleep because of this book, coupled with an overactive 7 year olds imagination.
