Great Baby Shower Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Our daughter does not want to know the sex of her baby before it's born, so my husband and I gave definitely different shower gifts to her, including books instead of greeting cards. I gave Knitting Nell and my husband chose My Football Book. Both books were purchased through Amazon, and they came quickly and in excellent condition. They were perfect, and "even a girl" can learn to play football from My Football Book (when she/he's not knitting).

Must have for recycling education 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is an amazing book. It covers the major groups of recyclables. It shares facts, tells children how to prepare each item to recycle, and gives a comprehendable description of how they are made into new products. At the end it even gives children ideas of how they can help.

Pretty good book 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While this book isn't the best I've found, it does have information a lot of other books don't have. It's a little hard for some younger learners to read as it has words like "bauxite" and "silica" but gives a pretty good background on renewable and non-renewable resources that go into your everyday products (glass, metal, paper, etc). The illustrations might be the best part of the book - as an informal educator with a non-profit organization, I mostly use this book for the pictures.

Editorial Review:

This handbook explains the process of recycling from start to finish. It focuses on paper, glass, aluminium, cans, plastic and polystyrene and describes what happens to each of them when they are recycled into new products. It also shows children how they can be involved in recycling.

Great for Teaching the Seasons 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased this book for my kindergartener to do a book project. He needed a book about the seasons, and this one fit perfectly. It simply illustrates and tells what happens to Arnold's apple tree around the year as each season passes.

Useful and sweet, although, perhaps, a bit bland 4 out of 5 stars.

I found this to be a very useful book for introducing the concept of seasons to my 5 yr old son. It's beautifully illustrated and the story is quite sweet, although I'm not sure how frequently he will ask to hear it again. It's not likely to end up on his list of favorites.

Can be used to teach about trees and their seasonal changes. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book covers the basics of what a tree goes through every season. Arnold and his dog take you through each season and explain what type of activities they do with the tree. Winter they build a fort around the tree for company, summer they build a treehouse, fall they rake and pick apples and in spring they hang out in the tree and smell the apple blowwoms and build a tree swing. Arnold treats the tree as his friend through-out the book. On a few of the pages, there is a recipe for apple pie, directions and explanations of what a cider press is and does and facts about honeybees. My overall impression of the book is that it is an okay book with okay pictures. If it wasn't partially educational, it wouldn't have been rated with 3 stars.

Editorial Review:

This book about nature and the changing seasons focuses on a young boy and a very special apple tree.

Good for 4 or 5 year olds. 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was very disappointed when I first looked at this book. It is very basic and hardly seems to provide enough information to be worthwhile. But when I read it to my four year old it solicited a string of questions. So it probably has the about the right amount of information for a very basic introduction to soccer, which is all the intended audience is ready for. Overall I would recommend it.

Great for four year olds! 5 out of 5 stars.

My two love this book. It breaks the principles of the game into simplistic steps and basic explanations which are perfect for preschoolers. The bold pictures make the book enjoyable for the boys to "read" to themselves sometimes, too.

3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Leaf, root and stem are three of the eight groups of vegetables and here are details about these groups, from how they're planted and harvested to the basics of tending a home vegetable garden and making use of produce. Who knew there were so many different kinds of vegetables? From glossy red peppers to lush, leafy greens to plump orange pumpkins, vegetables are explored in depth in this fascinating picture book that clearly explains the many vegetable varieties, how they are grown, and why they are so good for us to eat.

Great Details 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book because it offers detailed, factual information about seasons, and doesn't leave any of the important concepts out. It also has great illustrations that are labeled. Gibbons gives children credit for being intelligent enough to understand the complex ways in which our world works, yet understands their developmental needs, and therefore makes the text accessible.

Great book for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book for my 3-1/2 year old. She has been curious this winter about the season and is waiting for spring to come. This book has many details about the different types of clouds, precipitation, leaves changing, the sun, etc. She really enjoys this book!

This was a great book for teaching that the reasons for the seasons is the tilt of the earth's axis. Very straightforward and easy to understand diagrams without being too technical. Great for grades 2 and up.

Perfect! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for kids! I bought it to introduce my six year old son to baseball. It covers how the game is actually played, rules of play, and reinforces important baseball terms. At just the right length, this book is perfectly titled - My Baseball Book. Great for any budding, young baseball fan!

Introducing the game of baseball to younger readers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"My Baseball Book" by Gail Gibbons provides an introduction to the sport of baseball by describing the equipment, playing field, rules, players, and process of the game. The idea is to explain the basics to young readers (ages 3 to 7), so they will understand not only the markings on a baseball diamond, what baseball players wear, and all the positions, but also get a sense of how games are played and why a home run can be a big thrill. Most of the book is devoted to Gibbons describing a game between the Robins and the Owls, in which young readers get the chance to see hits, walks, runs, and other baseball plays in the context of a game.

Although this is supposed to be an introductory book to the game of baseball the information does get a bit technical at times, which means that an adult or older sibling is going to have to explain this a bit more. For example, at one point it is explained that in addition to being a strike if the batter swings and misses that it is also a strike if the batter does not swing but the ball passes through the "strike zone." There are dotted lines suggesting that the strike zone extends from the batter's armpits to his knees, but nothing to add that the ball also has to be over the plate (until you get to the term "strike" in the glossary in the back of the book). Still, on balance "My Baseball Book" is going to help kids by reinforcing what they are learning out on the field, which is the most important way of learning the game.

Nice introduction to the game for younger kids 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Gail Gibbons's My Basketball Book offers a nice introduction to the rules of basketball with attractive illustrations. The rules are displayed during a game between two teams of kids, the Comets and the Blasters. Gibbons's text offers enough details to give younger gradeschoolers the basics of the game in a fun manner. It's a favorite for my basketball-obsessed son.
