I tried to use this book to teach fourth graders about weather. I was left more confused than when I started teaching the unit.

Editorial Review:

Will I need my umbrella?

Is it a good day for the beach?

Will school close because of snow?

These are the questions weather forecasters answer every day. They can tell us what the weather is doing at any time of the day or night. But how do they do it?

Weather Forecasting tells how. With straightforward text and colorful pictures, this behind-the-scenes look at a modern weather station answers basic questions kids ask most, and makes weather forecasting more fun and accessible than ever.

Cowboys and Cowgirls: Old West and Modern Day 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The book is filled with information about cowboys and cowgirls. The majority of the book tells of their activities in the Old West. Their clothes, a roundup and a cattle drive is explained. On the cattle drive we meet the trail boss, wranglers, cookie and others. Their duties are explained. A map supplies the routes of the famous trails and names. The book is very imformative and will make a great supplemental tool in the classroom. Any litttle buckaroo will love the book.

Yippee Yahoo 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book for the aspiring cowboy in your house. I have twin cowboys who are almost 4 and they love this book. Their daily attire are cowboy boots and hats, spurs and a side iron(plastic today). So this book helps with their imagination and curiosity. This book is a fun read for Daddy and Mommy also.

Editorial Review:

Let's round 'em up and move 'em along! In words and pictures, Gail Gibbons captures all the excitement and adventure of the Wild West. Her colorful watercolors deftly re-create cowboys' clothing, equipment, and lifestyle, and the lively text includes descriptions of famous cowboys and cowgirls, as well as historical facts.

All kinds of fire fighters! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My 5.5 yr old son LOVES this book! He renewed it for four weeks at the school library before they made him turn it in, and then cried about it. The book teaches kids about different kinds of fire fighters. Most of us think of a fire fighters down at the fire station but it also encompasses smoke jumpers, water front fire fighters and more. I found it interesting to read to him too.

My son's all-time favorate fire fighting book -- mine too! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son judges a bookstore or library by number and quality of fire engine books. This book is our favorite. There is information in this book that is not in any other book we've read (and we have read many) and still it is an easy read. Gail Gibbons does a great job packing information into 4-8 year old bite sized pieces.

Editorial Review:

The alarm sounds. Fire! Fire! Big trucks roll out of the firehouse and race to the scene. Out come the soft hoses and aerial ladders. Whether the fire is in the city or in the country, on the waterfront or in a deep forest, firefighters are on the scene in moments, ready to attack the blaze.

Gail should hire an illustrator or a photographer ! 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Gibbons is a WONDERFUL writer. Her drawings, however, are definitely not in the category of her writing. They detract from her books. I am a children's librarian and I have seen time after time that kids will avoid her books because the pictures are so unappealing. This is a shame since the text is usually outstanding. Ms. Gibbons should think about getting an illustrator or a photographer to supply an equivalent to her text. If she were to do this, her books would reach a much greater audience.

An excellent, accurate book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book can be used as an excellent teaching tool. It provides a great introduction to the rainforests, and is full of facts about animals, medicines, and plants that are found in the rainforests.

Editorial Review:

"A scientifically accurate book which depicts the complex world of rain forests in easily understood text and sumptuous illustrations. The geography, climate and ecology of the rain forest are explained and the illustrations teem with the flora and fauna."--Children's Literature. ???

A highly recommended nonfiction book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Gail Gibbons' Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs is a children's picturebook that explores daily life and belief in the afterlife among the people of ancient Egypt. Aptly researched and presented in plain terms along with color illustrations stylistically reminiscent of ancient egyptian art, Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs is as educational as it is enthralling. A highly recommended nonfiction book to whet young minds' curiosity about world history, Mummies, Pyramids, And Pharaohs would make a popular addition to any school or community library system collection.

Editorial Review:

owerful pharaohs, magnificent monuments, sacred animal gods, mysterious hieroglyphics - what young reader isn't amazed by the wonders of ancient Egypt? Mummies, Pyramids, and Pharaohs travels back in time to visit one of the world's oldest civilizations, bringing this incredible culture to life with clear, simple text and vivid watercolors. No one is more trusted than Gail Gibbons in the arena of picture book nonfiction, for she provides comprehensive information in a most child-friendly, accessible format. Ideal for every Egyptologist-to-be.

MILK MAKERS 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I understand why this was a reading rainbow book. It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle. it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors. I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books. Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.
In close this is a good book for children, especially for a science unit. I would have this in my classroom library for childen to perhaps complete a report about milk or other products. Gibbons has a great series on the way variuos things are made.

Editorial Review:

You probably drink milk at almost every meal. But have you ever wondered where it comes from?

Cows eat special feed to make good milk. But after the cow is milked, there are still many steps the milk must go through before it reaches you. This book describes them all. And you'll be surprised to find how many other things you eat and drink come from milk, too.

Gail Gibbon's unique style makes this a fascinating book for children and adults alike.

Great Details 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book because it offers detailed, factual information about seasons, and doesn't leave any of the important concepts out. It also has great illustrations that are labeled. Gibbons gives children credit for being intelligent enough to understand the complex ways in which our world works, yet understands their developmental needs, and therefore makes the text accessible.

Great book for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book for teaching that the reasons for the seasons is the tilt of the earth's axis. Very straightforward and easy to understand diagrams without being too technical. Great for grades 2 and up.

Great book for a family building a house! 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book because we wanted our children to know what to expect while we were building our first home. It was a great step by step guide of the building process with very colorful pictures. I would highly recommend it if you have young children!

What happens next on our house, Dad? 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Our family refered to this book constantly as our own house was built. The book is filled with information for children. Plus, I admit it, there are some construction terms that I learned myself. This is a typical Gail Gibbons non-fiction, filled with relevant information combined with clear, easy-to-understand pictures.

Simple yet effective 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a simple book, perhaps to simple for my 11 and 13 year old. However it's also a one of a kind. We are building a house this year, our first and the boys really wanted to know what was going on without me turning it into another school lesson. This book does just that each frame (simular to comic book style but larger) is one process of the home as is goes up. It is to the point and doesn't waste paper getting through the steps. Simple but effective. Any child wanting to understand "what's next" but not wanting an engineering lesson would appreciate this book. I do think even a 4 year old, that has it read to them could understand it.

The story of everyday vegetables and their importance in diet. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Leaf, root and stem are three of the eight groups of vegetables and here are details about these groups, from how they're planted and harvested to the basics of tending a home vegetable garden and making use of produce. Drawings accompany facts and add lively embellishments to the story of everyday vegetables and their importance in diet.

Editorial Review:

Who knew there were so many different kinds of vegetables? From glossy red peppers to lush, leafy greens to plump orange pumpkins, vegetables are explored in depth in this fascinating picture book that clearly explains the many vegetable varieties, how they are grown, and why they are so good for us to eat.
