Thanksgiving is turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. It is a holiday for remembering the Pilgrims and the Indians. Most of all, it is a time to share with family and friends, and a time to give thanks for many blessings.

Christmas on an Island is a great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Christmas on an Island is a marvelous book, contrary to the reviewer for Publisher's Weekly. The prose is not flat, rather it conveys a sense of serenity. Clearly, this children's book is not written to be stilted or grandious. Ms. Gibbons describes a close-knit community that celebrates Christmas where the emphasis is not on commercial consumption. The book is a sweet story, and I was pleased when my son said he wanted me to check on line for a copy of it.

Editorial Review:

Describes the way residents of a small island celebrate Christmas.

A Must Have Favorite for Kids who Are Train Lovers! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I give this book five stars, not because I think the pictures are the best, but because this is THE favorite book right now of my 3 1/2 year old train loving son! The simple, factual text gives lots of helpful information for parents to talk with kids about the different kinds of trains there are (diesel, steam engine, electric etc.) and the various functions of a train. If your kid is into trains, this is a must have!

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

My 2 1/2 year old train-loving son wants this book to be read to him over and over again. The simple pictures and text give a nice overall explanation of trains to toddlers.

Trains 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a picture book by author and illustrator, Gail Gibbons. There are about 30 pages of brightly colored and detailed illustrations of the different types of trains, including early steam engines, diesel, electric and subway trains. Illustrations of tracks, tunnels and railroad stations are included. Also addressed is what happens inside trains: dining and sleeping. The different types of cargo that a freight train carries are illustrated. The last page shows different train signs and signals. This very informative book is presented in a simple way to keep a child interested.

Editorial Review:

Examines different kinds of trains, past and present, describing their features and functions.

An elementary teacher's thoughts on a great nonfiction book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

"Dogs" is a great informational book for kids in the primary grade levels. All kids have background knowledge on this topic and Ms. Gibbons presents her content in an easily understandable way. This would be a great book to use to start to teach kids about how/when to read "quick text" (brief text that accompanies pictures) and labels. There are a variety of breeds in "Dogs" that kids will be familiar with, and reading this book may spark interest in wanting to read more nonfiction about animals. By the way, in the Copyright 1996 edition, the word "Dalmatian" is not misspelled.

Editorial Review:

An introduction to dogs including their history, types of breeds, senses, and ways of communication.

A great introduction for young naturalists. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Bats examines different kinds of bats, their abilities, and how bats fit into the world, providing whimsical yet accurate drawings of bats to accompany the basic facts of their world-wide distribution and natural history. No photos, but the coverage is wider-ranging than many.

WONDERFUL illustrations - narrative "just right" 5 out of 5 stars.

What an OUTSTANDING book!! We like Gail Gibbons but often find her books a bit wordy for our newly 3-year old. It's not a problem to just talk about the photos or edit narrative for the age of the child, of course, but the perfect balance of this book, BATS, is what makes it such a fabulous find. The illustrations are both realistic and varied, and the narrative strikes the perfect balance between presentation of interesting and relevant fact, and length of text. Our daughter loves bats and this was a perfect book for our family. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! In our opinion, approx. age range 2.5 - 8 years.

Great Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This past halloween, my 4 yr. old was learning about bats at pre-school, so we went to the library and checked this book out. He was so disappointed when we returned it, that I had to buy it for him. My 7 yr.old son enjoyed it as well. This book balances accessible written information just right with detailed drawings of a wide variety of bats. If your pre-schooler to grade 3 child is interested in bats, this is a good buy.

Editorial Review:

Their amazing abilities and how they fit into the natural world.

Very Informative! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son got this book from Santa this year(and some chickens). We loved it. It is full of useful information and my children enjoy looking through it all the time. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Domestic chickens are an essential part of the agriculture and food production in America. Gibbons takes a look at how chicken eggs are developed for human consumption and at how fertilized eggs develop into embryos and finally into fuzzy little baby chicks. The behaviour of chicks, hens, and roosters is discussed, and descriptions of the different breeds of chickens across America are provided. Once again Gibbons provides a colourful, accessible account of this familiar, domesticated bird.

Don't expect to learn much! 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Given that this is an informational book, I expected to find lots of info about caves and caverns, clearly described and detailed. The text is often confusing and raises more questions than it actually answers. This confusion is compounded by the artwork. The illustrations are appealing to the eye and well suited for children, but they do not work particularly well with this topic. The pictures that accompany the text are often confusing and do not interact well with the written word. (Not to mention the fact that all people represented in the art are white.) Actual photos might have been a better choice, esp. considering the age level. If you know a child who is interested in this topic and really wants to learn something about caves and caverns, this is not the book.

Editorial Review:

Text and labeled illustrations describe the formation and physical features of various kinds of caves, with a brief section on spelunking.

neat 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a simple introduction to quilting for kids. It starts out by telling a little history on quilt making. Then it goes on to tell about various quilt patterns. The book features a helpful page of pictures of items used in quilting such as quilting frames and rotary cutters. In the end of the book is a great idea we hope to use in our home school. A classroom quilt project is started by writing letter and mailing squares of fabric to children's book authors and illustrators. They are asked to decorate the square and mail it back to the student. The squares are made into a quilt.

What did you like or not like about the book?

I enjoyed sharing this book with my great grandmother. She is a sewer and we liked looking at all the patterns for the quilts.

Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?

We would recommend this book. At this time there are no books in the kids section on quilting. This is a great introduction to quilting.

Editorial Review:

Design, snip, clip . . .

Welcome to the quilting bee!

With the help of popular author/illustrator Gail Gibbons, you'll learn how quilts are made and discover their fascinating history as well as lots of fun facts.

Back in colonial times, quilting bees were important social functions, combining both work and pleasure. They still exist today and attract thousands of snippers, clippers, and stitchers from all walks of life.

Some traditional quilt patterns have funny names: Trip Around the World, Bear's Paw, Crazy Quilt. Today's quilt makers also use their imaginations to create new designs that are works of art.

Here's the book to get you started in the wonderful world of quilts. Maybe you'll want to make one of your own!

Great behind-the-scenes look at the zoo 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For all the children who go to the zoo and enjoy looking at the animals, Gail Gibbons presents a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at all the work that makes it possible. From the zookeepers arriving in the early morning to feed the animals and clean their cages and the vendors preparing for the zoo's visitors, to the security guard locking the main gate and patroling the empty walkways, the book does a nice job of giving children a more in-depth view of the zoo. Veterinarians help sick animals and monitor the birth of baby animals. Construction workers build a new exhibit. Zoo keepers prepare the special foods that the animals eat.

Both my boys were able to easily relate things they'd seen at our zoo to the book. Their next visit, too, was filled with applying what they'd seen in the book to our zoo.

Gibbons' books are always excellent. Zoo brings alive a favorite place to visit in a very unique way.

Review of Zoo by Gail Gibbons 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In this book, Gibbons includes all important facts about the zoo presenting the information clearly and directly. The organization of the text is sequential from early morning at the zoo until nightfall. The purpose of the book is portrayed through the text and illustrations. The bright, colorful illustrations compliment the text and are clearly labeled using appropriate vocabulary for the intended age level. The book is very appropriate for young readers and would be a valuable resource for learning about the zoo.
