IT WAS OK 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 16 people found this review helpful.

it was ok because it did not have details

Editorial Review:

A rotting hull of a ship...lost gold...coins...gems...Sunken Treasure!

Today treasure hunting is a big business. Searchers use metal detectors and sonar to locate treasure on the ocean floor. Divers use high-powered machinery to uncover objects buried in the sand and to raise them to the surface. And more than just treasures are discovered. A whole window into the past is opened up. A salvage can take months or even years. But it's worth it!

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Gail Gibbons has done it again, this time providing an interesting and substantive contribution to children's non-fiction literature that focuses on corn. The central theme of the book revolves around the four main types of corn (sweet corn, popcorn, flint corn, and dent corn) and how people have put them to use as food sources, animal feeds, fuel, and as additives to other products we do not commonly associate with corn. The book also informs readers of the long history behind corn cultivation, the machines that are used to plant and harvest corn, and the process underlying the growth and pollination of corn. Corn gives teachers and parents a new option for teaching children about natural resources and capital resources. Kids who may not think twice about food items they eat almost every day are bound to learn something new and exciting.

Editorial Review:

Perennial nonfiction favourite Gail Gibbons turns her spotlight on corn. Popcorn, corn on the cob, corn dogs, cornflakes--corn is used in many children's favorite foods. This book offers a cornucopia of information about the history of corn as well as details concerning planting, cultivation, harvesting, and its many uses.

Wonderful Pigs! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book! Children love learning about these animals and it's good for them to know that there is more to a pig than just the thought of them being dirty animals! I love reading this book to my kindergarten class!

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Marine biologists believe coral reefs existed 400 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Today this active environment is home to about 20,000 kinds of brilliantly coloured corals, plants, and animals-more sea creatures than are found anywhere else in the world. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is so large that astronauts can see it from outer space! But what is life like in a coral reef? What do corals eat? Why are corals more colourful at nighttime? Children will enjoy Gibbon's informative text and clear, detailed illustrations on this journey into the unique lives of coral reefs.

Made me upset! 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If you are prepared to tell your kids that the Easter Bunny is not real, this would be the book for you, if not DON'T buy this one!

I purchased this book and read to my 6 year old daughter tonight. All was going well, it told the story of Jesus and the resurrection and how eggs were given as a sign of new life. Then it moved on to tell about Easter celebrations now with the colorful eggs and baskets. Then it goes on and tells how the "legend" of the Easter Bunny came about. I was floored! Reading the story tonight I was not prepared to tell my daughter that the Easter Bunny is not real. I know it would happen some day in the future but not from a childs Easter story at age 6. I'm lucky my 4 year old wasn't in the room while I read this to her!

A beautiful story 5 out of 5 stars.

I don't agree with the last review. As far as the explanation of the legend of the Easter bunny goes, it's easily explained to a child as just that, "legend," what some people believe. The poster could have easily gone on to say, "hmm, I wonder if the author has ever met the Easter Bunny?" I believe in showing my kids all the aspects of the holiday but most importantly, of course, the story of the Resurrection, which is the focus of this story. I wondered how she'd get through the Crucifixion as I was reading, but it is shown far off, not glazing over it, but softening the cruelty of it so as not to frighten the very young. To get really philosophical here, believing in the Easter Bunny is faith-based, just believing in the improbable, like a child does, my son's belief was not swayed.

Editorial Review:

The reason why Easter is celebrated--the death and resurrection of Christ--is explained clearly and simply, as are many Easter traditions. Illustrated by the author.

Thorough book about St. Patrick's Day 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book gives a thorough, yet simple explanation about St. Patrick's Day. Each page has beautiful illustrations and one to three sentences. It gives a simple 2 page intro, then spends 7 pages about who Saint Patrick was, then 14 pages of all the ways people celebrate/symbols (church, leprechauns, shillelagh, harp, cards, sweets, flowers, plays, meal, parties, and parardes), then two pages on celebrating it in the US, and then 3 pages of legends about Saint Patrick. A great introduction for young children.

A fabulous book about St. Patrick's Day 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a beautifully illustrated, well written, story about the life of St. Patrick and descriptions of how and why we celebrate this holiday. My daughter is very interested in her Irish heritage and read it to her Kindergarten class this year. It was a hit!

Editorial Review:

In addition to the story of St. Patrick's life, here is information about how St. Patrick's Day is celebrated. There are decorations from shmrocks to shillelaghs. People give cards, share meals, and wear green to honor Ireland, the Emerald Isle. And there are parades! Included are six legends about Patrick. Full color.

Great reference 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I read this book 2 years in a row for Spiders week at preschool. If you skip the history part, you're good! But its got a good reference book that is understandable at this age level. It talks about sizes, shapes and different webs. Very few non fiction books out there can be adapted for this age level with a variety of understanding---understanding this. But this is one of those books---and the kids love it too.

super spiders 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Synopsis - Spiders is a nonfiction book. Readers will learn where the name spider came from, characteristics, and how they live. Gibbons demonstrates the changes that spiders go through as they grow. She also examines the variety of webs that different spiders make. Finally, the reader will learn about ways spiders catch insects and the habits of some particularly unusual spiders.

Evaluation - Spiders is a great informational book about a species that fascinates and scares children. The author, Gibbons, is an author of over 135 nonfiction books. She is not an expert in spiders, however she researches each topic prior to writing a book. The illustrations are colorful and engaging. They complement the story, adding a visual picture to the writing. Many illustrations also have labels to increase the reader's comprehension. The inclusion of real life photographs might have increased the educational value of the book. The book was written as a source of information about spiders for young children, ages four to about nine. Most of the text within the story is appropriate for the intended audience. The only area that might be hard for children to understand is the discussion about Greek Mythology and the origin of the word arachnid. There is no table of content or index within the story, but at the end of the book there is a page that offers interesting facts about spiders. This story is written for children in pre-kindergarten to third grade, although students writing reports or completing web quests in higher grade level might use the book as a source of information.

Editorial Review:

Examines the physical characteristics, behavior, habitats, and different kinds of spiders
