Editorial Review:

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether.

Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book has captivated generations of boys and girls both with its thrilling descriptions of true incidents from the tiny island of Chincoteague, and its realistic yet wonderfully magical atmosphere. This story of an animal brought into captivity poignantly reveals the powerful opposing forces of humans and nature. Wesley Dennis's pen-and-ink ponies are masterfully depicted with rippling muscles, shaggy coats, and free spirits. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Wonderful Collection 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a very fine collection of Ms. Henry's books. One of my very favorite books as a child was "King of the Wind" and it was because I was looking it up that I found this collection. For anyone, young or old, who wants to enter into the wonderful, and magical world created by a well-crafted story, these three books will take the reader, and transport her/him into the lives of Agba, Joel Goss, and Paul and Maureen Beebe, and the horses that meant the world to them. There just is nothing like the relationship between a horse and the person who loves (and is loved in return) that horse! And there is no feeling on earth like the one you get on top of a horse, riding off down the trail. These books give the reader a look into the changes the love of a horse can bring about in a person's life, and I heartily recommend the books, especially if you haven't got a horse!

Editorial Review:

Sixty years ago, legendary author Marguerite Henry introduced Misty and allthe ponies of Chincoteague Island to boys and girls around the world. In honor of this, Aladdin is very pleased to bring out Ms. Henry's award-winning titles in onebeautifully designed boxed set that is the perfect gift for horse fans ofall ages.

Wonderful historical fiction for young people......!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

My seven year old daughter and I finished this book last night. She was very sad to have it end. What a wonderful account of the devastating storm that hit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague and the relief efforts to rebuild the islands and the devastated wild pony population.

It was very heartwarming to read in the epilogue excerpts from actual letters of children that sent in their hard earned money to buy back the ponies sold at previous Pony Penning Days to replenish the wild herds of Assateugue. These children and others like them preserved a tradition that had been maintained for over 100 years and because of them continues on today. In fact, Marguerite Henry dedicated this book to those very children that made it all possible.

Marguerite Henry does an excellent job of using local dialect in the telling of the story, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. You can not help but become involved in the characters and their concerns become very real to you.

I read this book many many years ago and had forgotten a great deal of the story. One of the things I did remember was Misty being put in Grandma's kitchen to wait out the storm.

If you are like me and read this book many years ago I encourage to reread it. You will be glad you did.

Editorial Review:

A foal, born in the aftermath of a great storm, and her famous mother help raise money to repair the storm damage on Chincoteague Island and restore the herds of wild ponies on Assateague Island.

When I bought this book, it looked pretty good and since it had more than a hundred pages, i thought i would enjoy it but i didnt.
This book starts of with a story of a horse, then goes into some boring history. You dont get very many good facts from this book, so if you are looking for a book that has a lot of facts about horses in it, dont buy this one!

Editorial Review:

How did the Morgan horse get its name?

What are the differences between a Belgian and a Clydesdale?

Why are the Byerly Turk, Darley Arabian, and Godolphin Arabian so important?

Find the answers to these and many other intriguing questions in Marguerite Henry's Album of Horses. The award-winning author of the wonderful stories Misty of Chincoteague, King of the Wind, and Brighty of the Grand Canyon, Marguerite Henry describes in vivid detail the hardworking Shire, the elegant Lipizzan, the spirited Mustang, and many more. Never before have facts about horses been more accessible, and with Wesley Dennis's classic illustrations highlighting every page, this unique collection is sure to be treasured by horse lovers of all ages.

From one horse-lover to any others out there. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I liked reading Sea Star by Marguerite Henry. It had wild horses with wild manes and flaring nostrils. Mares and foals of all types, pintos, bays, snow whites, and pitch black stallions galloped across the marshy plains. The book kept me on the edge of my seat and I was right there with Paul and Maureen, the two main characters when they found Sea Star. I was transported in my mind to the island of Chincoteague where I was flying across the sandy beach on my mounted steed next to them looking for the starving, tiny foal. Sea Star was my favorite book in the series of three books that I have read by this author.

A great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I felt like i was right there with Paul and Maureen. They are the two main charecters that found Sea Star on the beach. This book explains the little ponys struggle for life and how Paul and Maureen helped save the ponys life. The author explains everything so well that you dont want to put the book down, ever. If you like animals then you should read this book. The author did a great job explaining and keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Review: King of the Wind 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

King of the Wind is a great book by Marguerite Henry. It is about a mute boy named Agba and his horse Sham. Agba goes with Sham on many adventures together. Agba goes with Sham from the royal stables in Morocco to Gog Magog. Sham also sires many winning foals and when he is gone, Agba goes back to Morocco.
I enjoyed this book very much. I liked it because it is about horses. I also liked it because it was full of adventure. It was sad and exciting and there were many parts where Sham and Agba were seperated. Agba was very brave for a young, mute boy and Sham kept him company with his firy spirit that only Agba could control.
My favorite part was when the cook tried to drive Sham. He wanted to show that he did not need Agba to drive Sham. He left Agba at the royal kitchens then set out. Sham bidded his time till the cart was groaning with goods and a young pig. Then "BAM!" He went wild and ran like the wind, sending the goods, the pig, and the cook into the air. The cook runs after first the pig, then Sham, then the pig, until he is so confused that he catched nither. In the end the apple woman cathes Sham and the cook is so fustrated that he sells Sham to a cruel man. I like this part best because it is so funny and shows Shams firy nature.

Editorial Review:

He was named "Sham" for the sun, this golden-red stallion born in the Sultan of Morocco's stone stables. Upon his heel was a small white spot, the symbol of speed. But on his chest was the symbol of misfortune. Although he was swift as the desert winds, Sham's pedigree would be scorned all his life by cruel masters and owners.

This is the classic story of Sham and his friend, the stable boy Agba. their adventures take them from the sands of the Sahara. to the royal courts of France, and finally to the green pastures and stately homes of England. For Sham was the renowned Godolphin Arabian, whose blood flows through the veins of almost very superior thoroughbred. Sham's speed -- like his story -- has become legendary.

Misty's Twilight book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I loved it as a child, bought it for my daughter who hates to read. She hasn't made it through this one yet. It is one book of an awesome series of books for girls who love horses.

Well, I on the other hand thought it was good 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Even though some of you thought this book was a disapointment, I just wanted to let all who are thinking of reading it, it is wonderful! I personally thought it was better than Misty, Stormy, and Sea Star's books, even though I love them dearly. I have re-read it at least twice. I also thought that they should tell more about Twilight's dressage career, and they should've given Twilight a while to actually develop into a jumper. Also, I thought that Sandy should do something that her kids wanted to do for their birthdays. Anyway, despite those flaws, I loved the book, and it gets five stars.

Editorial Review:

Misty's Twilight is part thouroughbred, part Chinoteague pony, and one hundred percent fire and talent. A direct descendant of the most famous pony ever, Misty of Chinoteague, Twilight has greatness in her blood. Now it's her turn to shine, perhaps as a cutting horse, a jumper, or in the graceful art of dressage.

Can Twilight, whose ancestors were wild ponies living on an untamed island, do it? Can she compute against the best horses in the world...and win?

Brighty -- Still a great read! 5 out of 5 stars.

At age 54 I decided to add this book to my classic children's collection. I was delighted to find when I read it again after 43 years, it still was a charming, fun book from beginning to end!

great classic - not the size expected 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved the Henry books as a grade schooler and wished that my mother hadn't given away all my books while I was in college. I'm now trying to rebuild that part of my library and assumed that the hardcover version ordered would be the size of the original 'classic' printing. Instead, this is a mini-book in comparison. Just be aware of that when ordering. For those looking for other animal book series that a nature-loving child might enjoy, consider Jim Kjelgaard's books (Big Red, Irish Red etc), and Gerald Durrell (My Family and other Animals etc).

Editorial Review:

Long ago, a lone little burro roamed the high cliffs of the Grand Canyon and touched the hearts of all who knew him: a grizzled old miner, a big-game hunter, even President Teddy Roosevelt. Named Brighty by the prospector who befriended him, he remained a free spirit at heart. But when a ruthless claim-jumper murdered the prospector, loyal Brighty risked everything to bring the killer to justice.

Brighty's adventures have delighted generations of readers, and he has become the symbol of a joyous way of life. Some people say that you can even see his spirit roving the canyon on moonlit nights-forever wild, forever free.

A heartwarming story 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I first read the book in sixth grade for a book report. One of my friends said I should read it because my name is Annie, too. The aspect I like most about it was the fact that it the hero was a woman, and she fought with courage and determination for something that she believed was right.

Lovely, a memorable story 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was in Elementary School, I read all of the books in the school library that had to do with horses. Of all of them, this was my favorite. I've remembered it until today when I decided to refresh my memory from 7 years ago. I think it's so neat that books like this can stay with you and impact your outlook after so many years. This is such a beautiful and inspiring story, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Editorial Review:

Horses were in Annie Bronn's blood. For as long as she could remember, she had been fascinated by the spirited wild mustangs that roamed free throughout the West. So when greedy cattlemen started to round up the mustangs for slaughter, Annie knew it was up to her to save the breed.

The true story of Wild Horse Annie's crusade to save the mustangs is inspiring. Readers will cheer her on, all the way to the White House, in her struggle to preserve these beautiful creatures from extinction.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Some of the vocabulary is a bit old-fashioned, but my daughter and I enjoyed this book. It is also a great glimpse into early American life.

Editorial Review:

Joel Goss knows that Little Bub is a special colt, even though he's a runt. And when schoolteacher Justin Morgan asks Joel to break the colt in, Joel is thrilled! Soon word about Little Bub has spread throughout the entire Northeast -- this spirited colt can pull heavier loads than a pair of oxen. And run faster than thoroughbreds!

This is the story of the little runt who became the father of the world-famous breed of American horses -- the Morgan.
