Even the little ones can enjoy Herriot! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a long-time fan of James Herriot's books. I worked in an independent book store when I found this jewel, and I have given it at every baby shower and young child's birthday since. It is a collection of stories taken from his books and illustrated. The stories are sweet, poignant tales of the literary veterinarian's encounters with four-legged friends in England.

If you are an animal lover or Herriot fan, this is a must- see. The illustrations are realistic with a touch of warmth and they bring life to the stories that graced these literary masterpieces. Many friends and family who recently have had children love this gift. It is a book to be cherished and read to/with your children for years!

The binding is solid with a dustcover I remove when reading with small children (who love to rip my dustcovers!). The papers is a tolerant high gloss that can easily withstand sticky little baby fingers. My niece and I have clocked many hours reading and cleaning this book!

Editorial Review:

James Herriot's Treasury for Children collects all of the beloved veterinarian's delightful tales for young readers. From the springtime frolic of Oscar, Cat-About-Town to the yuletide warmth of The Christmas Day Kitten, these stories-radiantly illustrated by Peter Barrett and Ruth Brown-are perennial favorites, and this new complete edition will make a wonderful gift for all readers, great and small.

Tender-hearted peak at the past 5 out of 5 stars.

We bought this for our niece. The stories are heart-warming, but also sometimes realistically heart-breaking. I think it'll help any child develop sympathy and respect for other animals, plus city kids will get a glimpse of farm life.
We had read the comments about it being hard to read and understand, so my fiance read me a story from it before we wrapped it up and sent it out. We did get some good laughs from him trying to pronounce a few things. The problem isn't that the words are big, its that the author is doing a good job of recreating an accent and cultural slang that us americans haven't heard before. I think its probably healthy for parents and kids alike to be exposed to a different culture and way of talking. And even if you miss a few words, you'll still understand each story as a whole.
Parents should try reading Herriot's adult novels, too!

This completes my James Herriot collection! 5 out of 5 stars.

Born an animal lover, I read James Herriot's first four books in the 70's from middle through high school in Taiwan. Yes, Those books were translated into Chinese and James Herriot was quite popular among book lovers there. I came to the United States in 1987 and since then, I bought and re-read all his books in English. I discovered so many aspects of his writing could not be precisely translated into another language, nevertheless his love and affection for all living thing are universal. Later, I watched and collected some of the BBC adaptation and had to admit that even though they were fine production, they left you with little imagination. I still prefer the books and the audio CD's narrated by Christopher Timothy. Christopher Timothy's interpretation was very good on film, but even better on CD's.
When the book "James Herriot's Treasury for children" came out, I could not think of a better way to introduce my nieces and my daughter to James Herriot's writing and the animals around him. The children love the stories and illustrations. But no matter how hard I tried, I could never be good at imitating the Yorkshire farmer's accent.
When I found that an audio version of this book was available through Amazon, I was very excited the thought this would complete my James Herriot collection. However, I was puzzled that Christopher Timothy did not narrate this book. Not knowing Jim Dale's previous work, I was skeptical about the quality of his narration. Now I am glad that I was wrong.
Christopher Timothy has been wonderful with all his work, but I think Jim Dale is more suitable for this book whose target audience are mostly children. There is so much feeling and emotion in his voice that makes the stories even more captivating than they already were. While listening to "The Christmas Day Kitten", I found myself sobbing at the end of story as if I had lost my own pet.
James Herriot's books combine good story-telling, passion and kindness to every living thing. This book will do just that for your children. The audio CD will simply add more magic to his stories.

A simple yet moving story about a lost and injured dog 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

James Herriot was one of the best writers of stories involving human interaction with animals. In this case, a dog appears at a market in a British city. It is frightened to the point where it cannot be touched, yet it is clearly gentle as it quietly begs for food. The main character, a veterinarian that is clearly Herriot and a policeman try to approach it but fail.
Then, on a day when Herriot and his wife are going out, a policeman brings the dog to his place. It is badly injured with a broken leg and other cuts and bruises. Working together, Herriot and his wife mend the wounds and the dog then goes to a kennel. However, no one ever comes to claim the dog, which saddens Herriot. Finally, the dog is arrested, which was the term a policeman used. He had adopted the dog and the last scene is where the policeman's daughters are petting the dog.
This is an excellent and heart-warming story that children will love. Herriot writes with a simplicity and directness that stimulates your emotions. You find yourself caring for the dog and hoping that it manages to find a loving caring home.

Editorial Review:

The storytelling magic of James Herriot has become a warm, joyful part of our children's lives. The Market Square Dog is his tale of a friendly stray dog who comes to beg in the Darrowby village square-and goes without a home until the local policeman saves the day.

Not having been familiar with the work of James Herriot before this book, I was happily surprised when I read this to my little cat-loving daughter this christmas season. This is a touching story which brought us both to tears, but gave a joyful smile as we reached the end of the story. Truly a story to be shared with every child at christmas!

Irresistable! 5 out of 5 stars.

This picture book, although written for children, can be enjoyed by people of all ages, especially cat lovers! James Harriot has a style of story-telling that draws you in and doesn't let you go until you've finished the story. This story is just a small sampling of the many wonderful vet stories that Harriot has to tell.

A good book for a long, hard day. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is the epitamy of heartwarming. After all the sad, depressing things that happen in today's world, this book (and all of James Herriot's stories) makes you feel a lot better. Perfect for kids, this book will warm the souls of everyone.

Even though I haven't read this book since I was younger, I remember it as having a perfect happy ending. Even if you don't buy it, you should at least go to the library and check it out. You might like it enough to buy it anyways :)

A children's book that everyone in the family will read 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The text of this book is pure James Herriot, with absolutely no attempt to speak down to a young audience. Therefore, the use of the regional dialect may be a bit of a challenge to some young readers, but the exquisite illustrations should spur nine year olds & older to read it for themselves. It should be stressed that this is a true story as all of Herriot's writing is based on his experiences as a country veterinarian.

Do resist the temptation to skim through the book for the illustrations before reading it though. The illustrations are definitely a part of the story and one of the double page illustrations will definitely get a better reaction if not seen until one reads the preceding text.

If this "children's book" is left out on the coffee table, I predict that everyone in the family will at one time or another read it and enjoy it. I'm sure that any teenagers will wait until nobody sees them reading it, and that they won't admit enjoying it, but chances are they will.

Also, this book may well inspire those 12 and older to read James Herriot's adult books.

Editorial Review:

The storytelling magic of James Herriot has become a warm, joyful part of our children's lives. In Moses the Kitten, Herriot tells the tale of a tiny, bedraggled kitty found tucked beside a frozen pond, who is nursed back to health on a nearby farm.

Editorial Review:

What would inspire ornery old farmer John Skipton to enter his 20-year-old workhorse in a pet show? Why, love, of course. Mr. Skipton has worked hard all his life, so hard in fact that he never had time for marriage, children, or "pets." He was always too busy tending the sheep and the cows or harvesting the fields and orchards. However, as old and gruff as he appears to be, he takes time every day to take a pitchfork full of fresh hay to his two old carthorses, Bonny and Dolly, who've been retired for more than 12 years. After years of pulling ploughs and wagons, and doing all the hard work that tractors do now, the two old horses lead a life of leisure down near the river, quite a steep climb for an old man like Skipton. When the country vet suggests the farmer enter Bonny in the Darrowby Fair Pet Show, Skipton dismisses the idea without consideration. But over the course of the next week, the old fellow changes his mind and makes a surprise appearance at the pet show. The lovely illustrations depicting the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire dales, the handsome horses, and the lively inhabitants of the community attending the fair bring an old-fashioned beauty to the telling of this charming tale. --Colleen Preston

DISAPPOINTING 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you're a fan of the other illustrated James Herriot books, (Bonny's Big Day, Only One Woof, The Christmas Day Kitten, etc.) you'll be disappointed in this one. Rather than being another true tale from his days as a veterinarian, this is just a mediocre, fabricated story about a lost lamb which really doesn't fit with the rest of the series.

Tale of a lost Lamb 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In James Herriot's story Smudge, the little Lost Lamb, there is a lot of action. I found it easy to relate to the little lamb. He is such a cute character. I really cared about what happened to him. I do think the author needed to spend more time on Smudge and his relationship with his mother, sister and the little boy who owned him. I think this would be a great story for young children. The illustrations are nice and Smudge is such a cute little guy.

Editorial Review:

Smudge is an adorable black-and-white lamb, who lives in Farmer Cobb's farmyard with his mother and many other animals. One fine spring day, though, Smudge decides to see the world outside Farmer Cobb's fence, and finds himself on a glorious adventure-until he discovers that he can't get back in .Smudge, the Little Lost Lamb, James Herriot's newest story for children, is another delightful addition to the beloved country veterinarian's award-winning series of books for young readers. Illustrated with the radiant watercolors of Ruth Brown, it will be a joy for readers of all ages.

This book was a favorite of my childhood and I still read it to this day. I pick it up somtimes at night or just when I want a quick read! All children will love this story.

AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This particular Herriot story has been and is one of my favoites out of his several books. There is something quite charming and human here that is difficult to put a finger on. Being a dog lover of course helps, but this is the type of story that will appeal to just about everyone. Only One Woof is the story of a sheep dog who did just that, uttered only one woof in his entire life. This wonderful story has here been made into a children's books with wonderful illustrations by Peter Barrett. The art work alone is worth the price of the book. I have read this one to classes and it is universally love by the kids. I highly recommend this one.

A Delightful Retelling Of A Favorite Story 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I first read the chapter in an earlier Herriot book relating the story of the silent young sheepdog, I was inexplicably moved. Later in life, when I had the extreme good fortune to become the owner of a border collie pup, I named her Gyp in honor of Mr. Herriot's wonderful tale. This particular version for children is a delight for readers young and old alike. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

Gyp, a cheerful but always silent sheep dog, startles everyone with uncharacteristic behavior during the championship sheep dog trials.

Cat lovers, take note! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Warm, homey illustrations that almost seem to glow are paired nicely with the sweet storyline. As always, James Herriott knows his animals, and can capture their essence on paper. I have known cats like Oscar, who is most definitely a "people" cat--he loves to be in the thick of things!--and reading Oscar's story was like a touch of nostalgia. If your little one loves animals, do get them this book. I have a hunch they'll like it.

A wonderful Cat book by a wonderful writer 5 out of 5 stars.

I think I have not had a more pleasant reading experience than sitting down next to a burning fire place, listening to my favorite antique clock ticking.. the patter of rain on the window panes and reading James Herriott. It is a memory of that afternoon that all these years later I have never forgotten. James Herriott is the most pleasant, relaxing, refreshing writer. Forget all the worries and cares and escape for a few minutes into a quiet world where the animals speak their own language.. A wonderful book, a wonderful writer. Thank You James Herriott for the memories.

Editorial Review:

Oscar is a good-natured stray cat, left by a little girl with the Herriots to be nursed back to health. the country veterinarian and his wife take him into their home, and soon he has become part of their family. But before too long, Oscar starts setting off on his own--running away, only to turn up in the funniest places.Oscar, Cat-About-Town, the newest children's story by James Herriot, is sure to become another classic; illustrated with the rich, colorful artwork of Ruth Brown, it will win the hearts of readers young and old.
