Editorial Review:

"One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight." So begins this gentle story that shows just how far your imagination can take you. Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, young Harold draws himself a landscape full of beauty and excitement. But this is no hare-brained, impulsive flight of fantasy. Cherubic, round-headed Harold conducts his adventure with the utmost prudence, letting his imagination run free, but keeping his wits about him all the while. He takes the necessary purple-crayon precautions: drawing landmarks to ensure he won't get lost; sketching a boat when he finds himself in deep water; and creating a purple pie picnic when he feels the first pangs of hunger.

Crockett Johnson's understated tribute to the imagination was first published in 1955, and has been inspiring readers of all ages ever since. Harold's quiet but magical journey reminds us of the marvels the mind can create, and also gives us the wondrous sense that anything is possible. (Ages 4 to 8)

2nd best of the series 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Impossible to beat the original "Harold and the Purple Crayon", this is certainly the next best thing. This story is appealing to a somewhat older child than the original story, as it is a bit more complex. It is better than "Trip to the Sky", which has an odd story line that children do not follow as well. The new books that go with the television series are weak in comparison to the books written by Crockett Johnson.

Gets the imagination going! 5 out of 5 stars.

You have to love Harold and his purple crayon! You never know where they are going to take you. In this adventure, he and his crayon meet a king who is sad because there are no flowers in his enchanted garden. Well, Harold finds the reason for this crime and takes care of it.
Well written and in such a nice rhythm. Your child will ask questions, think up scenarios, and wonder aloud at what will happen next.

I'm a kid again 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is filled with such imagination. It is a great book, if your a teacher or a daycare assistant, to read to the kids and have a fun project.

Editorial Review:

Unable to fall asleep one night, Harold uses his purple crayon to create his very own bedtime fairy tale.

Harold, now and forever 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The Harold and the Purple Crayon Series are wonderful. Harold is a little boy with a round head (around long before Charlie Brown) with a little purple crayon and a big imagination. In the North Pole book, Harold has set out on Christmas Eve to find a Christmas tree. Along the way, Harold ends up helping Santa but needs to hurry to find a tree to have it ready for Santa's visit. The simple line drawings are wonderful for younger readers yet there is always a charm to them. Harold inspires kids on so many levels; he's great for children who are timid, he's great for the mighty little explorers and he's great for kids who like to draw but feel intimidated by other artists.

Editorial Review:

There's nothing Harold can't create with his purple crayon--and that's just why children have loved his magical world for decades. Crockett Johnson wrote several other books about Harold after the original Harold and the Purple Crayon in 1955, each one tracing different themes--from Harold at the circus to Harold on Mars. This time the imaginative young artist takes his purple crayon on a search for a Christmas tree. He finds himself at the North Pole just in time to help Santa who is snowed in with his reindeer, his sleigh, and all the toys. Harold's purple crayon to the rescue! He draws his own solutions, solving both Santa's problem and his own. This would be a dandy Christmas gift wrapped up with a big pad of paper... and a purple crayon, of course. don't give up! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book had a huge impact on me as a child.

Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned.

I read this book to my own kids now, and they love it as much as I do.

Editorial Review:

Ruth Krauss, author of A Hole Is to Dig, has crafted a story almost Zen-like in its simplicity. A little boy plants a carrot seed and waits patiently, tending to it carefully, while everyone around him insists that "it won't come up." His conviction is steadfast, however, and sure enough, a carrot worthy of first prize at any state fair springs forth from the earth. Krauss's husband, Crockett Johnson (creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon), illustrated The Carrot Seed, and while the little boy is rendered with uncomplicated lines, all of his hope, confidence, and serenity shine through. The image that resonates most strongly in this minimalist tale is the unfaltering faith of the mild-mannered little boy. Young readers learn that standing your ground in the face of opposition and doubt can often result in twice the reward expected (even thrice the reward, if judging by the girth of this carrot). One of the best children's books for the imagination. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

As a child between the age of 6 and 8, I remember going to the library with my mother and checking out each of the adventure's that Harold had. I must have checked them all out more than ten times each. The concept of a small boy using his purple crayon to imagine many things was so fun. The vocabulary is suitable for the reccommended age group. The pictures are great. The spectacular thing and most valuable lesson is that it not only teaches one how to read, but it also says it's o.k. to have an imagination. Today I still remember how much I loved Harold and his purple crayon. I plan to buy all of the Harold books not only because of my love for them, but to one day share them with my children.

Another favorite from Crockett Johnson 5 out of 5 stars.

Our son loves Harold and the Purple Crayon, so we ordered this Trip to the Sky story. At first I didn't find it as clever, but the more we read it, the more our son enjoys it. We love the imaginative exploration, Harold's ingenuity, and the simple yet unique drawings. The move from night to day is wonderfully sudden, and the play with words once again delightful. The dated paranoia about u.f.o.s is amusing to us, and it's the perfect kind of "scary" for a not-quite three-year-old.

Editorial Review:

With his magic purple crayon, Harold draws himself into a rocket voyage to Mars, then safely back to earth just in time for breakfast.

THIS IS A FABULOUS BOOK TO READ OUT LOUD 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I adored this book when I was a kid (some 30 years ago) and since then I have read it out loud to lots of kids -- including groups in hospitals and at libraries. They always love it -- expecially the age 3 to 5 crowd. The illustrations are very simple, but really appealing to kids. It's also a terrific book for beginning readers since the vocabulary is pretty simple.

Harold Drew a Picture & Took a Trip On the Imagination Hghy 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Harold needs a picture on his wall, so he takes a crayon and starts to draw and his pictures seem to come to life, getting bigger and bigger as he draws first a line, then a little town, then some woods, then a road. He drew the moon, mountains, clouds and the sea. Then a boat on the sea, fish too, then a cliff and a lighthouse on the cliff. More mountains and clouds next, then train tracks and all of a sudden Harold is lost in his drawing. Fortunately he can erase it and find his way back.

This is a nice little fantasy story my son Devon just loves. Of course I've been making up words for the last year or so, but now that he's approaching three and knows all his letters and that letters form words, he is getting a new appreciation for this book. I am too.

This is a book for beginning readers. The words are simple, grammar too. Harold's story is sure to keep your toddler interested, so much better than the "See Spot Run" kind of early readers. If you want your child reading before Kindergarten, and I do, then this book and books like it are very good additions to your toddlers reading arsenal.

Editorial Review:

Harold needs a picture for his bedroom wall. So he takes his purple crayon and begins to create a whole new world around him. But then he notices he has gotten very small-half the size of a daisy! Only a very clever artist can find his way home now.

dated but comforting 3 out of 5 stars.

First published in 1959, this Harold book describes Harold's adventures as he draws his way through a circus. The style is minimalist and the activities are dated, but the story is also simple and active -- and very interesting to toddlers and young children. In this very fast world, this book helps kids (and parents) slow down a bit.

No batteries required.

Harold's Circus is for All Ages 4 out of 5 stars.

Harold's Circus is a great book for everyone. The story is very imaginative. The story flows just like Harold's drawings. This book has lots of great yet simple pictures. The vocabulary can be a bit more complicated than the simple layout and drawings might suggest.

Editorial Review:

Purple crayon in hand, Harold draws a tightrope and falls into a circus [where he has many adventures].As in the previous books, the dauntless Harold is resourceful and loveable." SLJ.

Fantasic Alphabet Book for Children 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book quite cleverly introduces the alphabet A to Z. Each letter is introduced in order and appears as part of the picture associated with it. Descriptive words use the letter, usually starting with it. Text leading to the next page (and next letter) suggests the next letter by using it at the beginning of some words, too. Very cleverly written. I grew up with "Harold and the Purple Crayon", which I like very much. I've enjoyed, as an adult other Harold books by Crockett Johnson. "Harold's ABCs" is an equal with the original.

Editorial Review:

Taking along his purple crayon, Harold journeys from A to Z, each letter generating a picture from which the word becomes part of an uninterrupted story.

Editorial Review:

Crockett Johnson, creator of the 1955 classic Harold and the Purple Crayon, also wrote a lovely, nonsensically philosophical collection of 12 stories about a little girl named Ellen and her conversations with her stuffed lion. Originally published in 1959, Ellen’s Lion has an old-fashioned feel, but its explorations of child logic and imagination are universal and fresh, the perspective authentically childlike. In one story, Ellen pretends she is terrified of her pet lion and calls the police. The lion becomes impatient and annoyed. Ellen feels guilty: "I should have asked you if you ate people before I called a policeman," she says. The lion tells her she didn’t use a real telephone. "’But I called a real policeman,’ said Ellen." In another story, "Sad Interlude," Ellen displays sympathy for her "poor sad old lion." The lion is indignant:
"I’m never sad and never happy, never hungry or never full, never foolish or clever, or good or bad, or this or that, or anything else you imagine me to be—-"
"You poor thing," Ellen said, slowly, shaking her head. "You haven’t any mother, either, have you?"
"Now you are being ridiculous," the lion said.
Children will have no trouble keeping up as the story slips from the real to the imaginary and back again. Out of print for two decades, this winning chapter book, complete with orange-hued, Harold-style illustrations, is sure to charm readers young and old. (Ages 5 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Tan encantador en español como en inglés (Just as charming) 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Even grownups enjoy this imaginative story of a boy whose purple crayon takes him on a magical journey. The Spanish translation retains all the magic of the English original, such that a friend in his 20s became glued to the book when I first brought it to his attention. Caution: Although the story is understandable to children as young as 3 or 4, it is longer than it looks! Begin the story only if you are prepared to read for a little while, but once you do, you'll enjoy the trip.
