Our first choice in choosing a place to stay in London. 5 out of 5 stars.

The descriptions and details in Cheap Sleeps are accurate and very helpful - not only to the first-time traveler but also to those who want to try a different area or a different price range.

Excellent Book - Don't book in London without it 5 out of 5 stars.

This will be our first trip to London in August. Orginally we'd booked accomodations at a Best Western but the thought of flying all the way to London and staying in a Best Western just didn't do anything for me. So we bought this book. Through it we found and rented a two bedroom apartment in Chelsea overlooking the Thames. The price was about the same as a upper middle hotel room. Without this book I never would have considered this or even known how to go about it.

As the author states this book is not about finding the cheapest but the best value for the money. It also contains many helpful hints on what to bring, what to pack, and just general information about London. I'd recommend it to anyone, especially first timers.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

With more than 20,000 cafes, bistros, brasseries, and restaurants, Paris can intimidate the average hungry traveler. After all, in Paris of all places "...you don't want to waste time and money on a mediocre meal when you could be eating magnificently and paying less just around the corner." In the 1998 edition of Cheap Eats in Paris, you will find more than 200 listings, running the gamut from tearooms and wine bars to macrobiotic restaurants and boulangeries, and even nonsmoking establishments.

Author Sandra Gustafson shares with us her secrets for eating well on a budget: order the set menu (formule) or the plat du jour à la carte, house wine (vin de la maison), and tap water (l'eau ordinaire). Or, cut expensive corners by seeking out fast food à la Française (le snack). Included is a list of unacceptable activities that will indubitably offend Parisian wait staff, such as ordering only drinks from a table with a cloth or place mat (they are reserved for patrons ordering food), drinking coffee with a meal, and asking waiters for a doggie bag or to split a dish. A substantial glossary of food terms and menu items is a thoughtful addition.

Listings are arranged by arrondissement and provide information on hours, reservations, credit card usage, special menus, availability of English, and nearest metro stops. Gustafson's ample depictions evoke lush images of décor, ambiance, and, of course, cuisine that is nothing short of magnifique, ensuring that your next meal in Paris will be exactly what you were hoping for. --Jhana Bach

Book pays for itself with the first meal! 4 out of 5 stars.

Excellent: especially for background and survival information (e.g. where and what to eat, menu terms). Excellent maps. The book pays for itself with the first meal. Marilyn and Paul N., Bethesda, MD

This book is already outdated. 1 out of 5 stars.

This book was probably useful 5-6 years ago(1997 edition). Now, it is just too old to be useful. Don't waste your money. I would love to see those prices again, but it is in the past and even Eastern Europe is not that cheap any more.

Great Food & Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

We travelled to Budapest in July 2003. We only got to use the book 2 times but each was a wonderful experience. We never would have found the restaurants mentioned without the book. We didn't worry so much about the prices quoted, but they were reasonable and the food was wonderful with generous portions. Finding the restaurants and exploring the area was a wonderful adventure and unforgettable experience. It was well worth the money spent.

Editorial Review:

Explore the inexpensive places to dine when visiting any one of these three famous and historic European cities. 3 maps.

Editorial Review:

If you're planning on visiting Florence, Venice, or Rome on your next trip to Italy, Cheap Eats in Italy could be your best friend. Author Sandra A. Gustafson starts off by initiating readers into the ins and outs of eating cheaply in Italy. (Rule number one: eat standing up when possible--breakfast or lunch at the bar can be as much as 50 percent cheaper than sitting at a table.) She clues you in on Italian fast-food joints such as rosticceries and cafés that offer tavola calda (hot table) where the food is plentiful, good, and inexpensive, and she explains the ground rules of dining in an Italian restaurant. ("If the waiter does not bring Parmesan cheese, it probably does not go with what you're eating. Parmesan is never used on pasta with fish or with lots of garlic, but it is offered with many types of soup;" and "Coffee is served after a meal, never with it.")

General information in the sections devoted to each city gives way to specific details about the restaurants listed. Gustafson provides a thorough review of each restaurant that covers specialties of the house, ambience, and what to look forward to--or avoid. (Concerning desserts at the otherwise highly-recommended Il Vegetariano in Florence, Gustafson writes: "Desserts are in the lead-ball category. I recommend skipping them.") With Cheap Eats in Italy you'll know what you're getting before you get it.

Newest edition already out of date 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Used latest editon 4th dated 2000 on trip to London April 2000. Tried 10 restaurants. 5 were out of business. 3 were closed (hours different than book). Gave up at that point. Probably better to just wander around neighborhoods and check menu in window.

Fun and accurate 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been to more than 15 of the restaurants in book I agree 97 percent with Susan although I give higher marks to Piere Victorie than she did it is a chain and my spot may be better than one she went to.

The information seems solid 3 out of 5 stars.

I only used this book for one or two recommendations while in London this summer. For those restaraunts I found the book was fair in its rating. The food was good and the prices weren't too bad. The only complaint I have about this book is that most of the establishments seem to be clustered in the Chelsea/Knightsbridge area. So if you've been out for a long day of sightseeing you may not find anything in the book in your area. It's the type of book you use to plan a meal ahead of time, and for that it works fine.

The chatty style is fun to read... 4 out of 5 stars.

and the author's not shy about expressing an opinion, which is refreshing. There's a substantial write up on each spot, much better than the fifty words or so in most guidebooks. She does tend toward the touristy, but she also has some good ideas about finding bargains at the posh places. If you liked this, check out her Cheap Sleeps series, too.
