Editorial Review:

"It seems to me that almost everything is a waste of time," Milo laments. "[T]here's nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." This bored, bored young protagonist who can't see the point to anything is knocked out of his glum humdrum by the sudden and curious appearance of a tollbooth in his bedroom. Since Milo has absolutely nothing better to do, he dusts off his toy car, pays the toll, and drives through. What ensues is a journey of mythic proportions, during which Milo encounters countless odd characters who are anything but dull.

Norton Juster received (and continues to receive) enormous praise for this original, witty, and oftentimes hilarious novel, first published in 1961. In an introductory "Appreciation" written by Maurice Sendak for the 35th anniversary edition, he states, "The Phantom Tollbooth leaps, soars, and abounds in right notes all over the place, as any proper masterpiece must." Indeed.

As Milo heads toward Dictionopolis he meets with the Whether Man ("for after all it's more important to know whether there will be weather than what the weather will be"), passes through The Doldrums (populated by Lethargarians), and picks up a watchdog named Tock (who has a giant alarm clock for a body). The brilliant satire and double entendre intensifies in the Word Market, where after a brief scuffle with Officer Short Shrift, Milo and Tock set off toward the Mountains of Ignorance to rescue the twin Princesses, Rhyme and Reason. Anyone with an appreciation for language, irony, or Alice in Wonderland-style adventure will adore this book for years on end. (Ages 8 and up)

Didn't care for it. 2 out of 5 stars.

I just don't particularly like it, and neither do my children. The story isn't interesting and the illustrations aren't engaging. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, and since my copy just takes up space on our bookshelf, I will probably donate it to the next church fund raiser. After all, it's in perfect condition.

Lovely idea 4 out of 5 stars.

What a touching little story! Tis is from the perspective of a little girl who is babysat by her grandparents--and the love between all three is evident and incredible. The writing is charming and will connect with small kids, and the artwork is just a blast.

The Hello, Goodbye Window 5 out of 5 stars.

Great illustrations. Wonderful book to give children the opportunity to see how imagination can play into their own world.

Editorial Review:

The kitchen window at Nanna and Poppy's house is, for one little girl, a magic gateway. Everything important happens near it, through it, or beyond it. Told in her voice, her story is both a voyage of discovery and a celebration of the commonplace wonders that define childhood. It is also a love song devoted to that special relationship between grandparents and grandchild.

Visual and textual puns that will delight people of all ages 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book of visual and textual puns uses the names of animals to create them. Some examples are:

*) There is a picture of an ox jumping of a diving board and it is about to land on a porpoise. The caption is "Oxidentally on porpoise."
*) There is an otter is a baseball uniform about to deliver a pitch. The caption is "Striker otter."
*) There is a female dog pushing a baby carriage containing a large number of baby puppies. The caption is "Pupulation explosion."
*) There is a hippopotamus sitting on a toilet. The caption is "Hippopottymus."

The puns will delight children and adults alike. There is nothing better than a joke based on wordplay, when done well everyone can appreciate them.

Editorial Review:

We've got some great gnus for ewe here--lots of other hilarious animal puns that are sure to shark you. In this brilliantly illustrated book you can see the seal of approval, and meet a moose with a mousetache. The 80 outrageous puns in the collection will make this just the condor book you'll gopher. Full color.

Yeah for English! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We love this book! "We" includes me (homeschooling mama), and my seven year old and four year old sons. We are ordering it for our home because we enjoy reading it, even portions, just for the fun of it! I am reading it as part of our reading before we do our reading proper in homeschool time. It makes English enjoyable and worth doing again and again! The similes make you smile, but are helping my sons to get a feel for how reading and doing things with words is like playing with toys. For me, this book is like math manipulatives. Hope this is helpful!

Editorial Review:

In verse that is as bright as a penny, Juster has stirred up a storm of similes, and Small has brilliantly captured them all. It's as much fun as a barrel of monkeys.

The True Meaning of LIfe 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If one is searching for the true meaning of life, you can find it between the few pages of this "picture book." It is not the successes and the failures that we encounter daily, but what is important is how we get to them and what we do with them. THE JOURNEY.

Feudel vassel Alberic learns it is alright to fail 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The story was originally written in 1965 but has been reissued in 1992 accompanied by some wonderful paintings by Leonard Baskin that are, indeed, reminiscent of Barry Moser (both of whom, interestingly enough, founded their own private presses). In this day and age, children are basically taught that success is everything and the only thing. This book tells a remarkably different tale: it is alright to fail, as Alberic learns repeatedly. Alberic does not wallow in his failure, he picks up and moves on to new chapters of his life. Ultimately, he learns he is a success by being thought wise, yet he remains uncomfortable in the trappings of success. Why, because he has learned that life is lived best by continual striving, that it is a process, a journey wherein "the freedom and the joy [is felt by] not knowing where each new step would take him." An altogether wonderful lesson for children and wonderful paintings.

Editorial Review:

In the days of the Renaissance, Alberic leads the reader among the folds of a rich tapestry in his search for wisdom.
