Cute and fun, better for the under 2 1/2s 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It bores my son after a couple of weeks and he's not yet three. At first though, he did really like it. Cute rhymes that are easy to remember, and he loved screaming the responses at first.

Editorial Review:

The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

I love this book. I had gotten it with my children in mind but being an artist myself, found great joy in reading it.

so thoughtfully put together. a beautiful book to browse through and inspire you and your children to pick up a tool and draw, paint and create.

Editorial Review:

In this remarkable and beautiful anthology featuring the likes of Maurice Sendak, Robert Sabuda, Rosemary Wells, and Eric Carle, twenty-three of the most honored and beloved artists in children’s literature talk informally to children—sharing secrets about their art and how they began their adventures into illustration. Fold-out pages featuring photographs of their early work, their studios and materials, as well as sketches and finished art create an exuberant feast for the eye that will attract both children and adults.

Self-portraits of each illustrator crown this important anthology that celebrates the artists and the art of the picture book. An event book for the ages.

Nice illustrations 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I got this book with my five-year-old in mind, but all of my two-year-olds and three-year-old also found it engaging. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical without being overwhelming or chaotic.

I think this book is probably best suited for slightly older children as some of the examples were not familiar to my children. For example, my children have never been in a stadium, so that example was a little abstract for them.

Overall a good book and an excellent way to introduce the concept a million.

Really Fun Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Kids will love this book which helps kids and adults picture the amount a million something might look like. How big would your goldfish bowl have to be if you had a million goldfish, or a million kids in a stadium? Kids will be in awe of this book.

Love the Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book! Teaches kids to understand the concept of very large numbers.
It's fun to read and the pictures are very well done. A must have for any children's library.

Editorial Review:

This book reveals how big a bowl would be needed to hold a million goldfish, or how many years it would take to count to a million.

Fun Story 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This imaginative story is about a little girl who spends all day building a huge snowman and playing in the snow. When she realized that her red mitten was missing. She could not bare loose another mitten seeing how every winter thus far she had lost one. The little girl decides to retrace her steps that day and she came up with fun ideas of where her mitten could be. While on her mission she finds various other articles that belong to her friends with whom she spent the day with, but her mitten was no where to be found. After searching high and low it starts to rain. The little girl goes inside in an attempt to get out of the slushy mess. After the rain passed the little girl went outside to find that her mitten had gotten stuck in her snowman when she was building it. The mitten was visible now that some of the snow had melted from the rain. The snowman appeared to have a very bright red heart.
The author had to have been so creative. This story allows the kids to follow the little girl through the search of the mitten and guess along with her. Then the fun ending supplied a great surprise and meaningful finish. The snowman was made with love.
I liked this book because it was easy to follow and the fun plot and great pictures would easily catch a child's attention and keep them interested and guessing throughout the book. I found the pictures to be beautiful as well. Steven Kellogg has always been a favorite illustrator of mine.

Editorial Review:

Annie and her dog, Oscar, have had a busy day playing in the snow. Somehow Annie's red mitten has disappeared in all the fun. They look high and low. . . . It's not on the sledding hill, and it's not by the snow castles. Maybe an eagle carried it off to keep its baby's head warm. Or maybe a mouse is using it as a sleeping bag. When the sun goes down, Annie and Oscar have to give up their search and go inside. But when Annie looks out the window, something red catches her eye. . . .

With entirely new full-color illustrations, this beautiful version of the beloved picture book The Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten retains all the charm of the original.

A JOY TO READ. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my favorites. The Day Jimmy's boa ate the Wash is the story of a day trip by a local group of school children to a local farm. Now let me say right now; many may think that this is a group of complete brats as the kids, through a series of incidents, pretty well trash the entire farm. This is not so. To be quite frank, the actions of these children are pretty typical of just about any fourth or fifth grade class when out on a field trip.

The story begins with a young girl, being asked by her mother how their trip went that day. The little girl responds that it was okay, but pretty boring, until the cow started crying. The story then picks up speed and becomes absolutely hilarious. We find the cow was crying because they hay fell on her, which was pushed when the farmer's tractor went out of control because it......well, as you can see this is a progressive story with one incident setting off a chain reaction which leads to complete disaster and chaos.

The story is only half of it though. The art work in this little book is completely delightful and full of detail, right down to the various expression the children's teacher displays as each incident unfolds. Some of the pictures, such as when the pigs get on the school bus and help themselves to the children's lunch or when Jimmy's pet boa visits the hen house, will most certainly bring a chuckle to just about anyone reading this one.

The whole story of course is capped off by Jimmy's Boa eating the farmer's wife's laundry right off the line.

This is a fun book to read with children and a fun book for them to just set and read themselves. The story is simple, but the way the author has it set up, coupled with the amazing illustrations, makes this one a real page turner.

Get this one and read it with your kid with joy!

great illustrations but somewhat awkward wording 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Overall I enjoyed the book - the illustrations in particular are amazing (and yes, possibly scary for the under 5 crowd). My only complaint is perhaps what other readers may view as a positive - that the text tries to capture the "Old world" language flare. At times, I found the wording to be unintentionally tongue twisting... not just the choice of words but the rhythm to the sentences - all made it a little rough for this reader the first time through. As examples, try reading aloud:
"What!" said Jack's mother."Have you been such a dolt, such an idiot as to give away my Milky-white, the best milker in the parish, for a set of paltry beans? Off with you to bed! And as for your precious beans, here they go out the window."
So Jack went upstairs to his little room in the attic, and sad and sorry he was to be sure, as much for his mother's sake as for the loss of his supper.
....
My only other criticism of the book is that only once does the Ogre give the full recitation of
"Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of an Enlishman.
Be he alive or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread."
Most of the time he only says Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, or perhaps the rest of the first line. I've read another version that repeats the full verse at least thrice, and by the third reading, all the children are gleefully reciting along with you. So when I read this particular version to my children, I just ad lib that part and read the full verse each time, which the children seem to enjoy.

Overall, I'd say the illustrations make the book. Otherwise, the version is a bit too awkwardly worded for me, but others may enjoy that style.

Editorial Review:

Join young Jack as he climbs a giant beanstalk to a magic castle in the clouds. Meet a hen that lays golden eggs and a harp that sings by itself. And don't forget the ogre. A classic fairy tale with a vigorous look that will leave you chanting "Fee-fi-fo-fum!"

Great book about an awesome journey 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book arrived at our library last week, and I was immediately blown away by it! Faith McNulty and Steven Kellogg have done a great job of showing and telling children what a trip to the moon would really be like.

One thing that is great about this book is the way experiences and things that are familiar to children are used to describe extraordinarily UN-familiar experiences and ideas. The book is written in the second person point of view -- directly addressing the reader. I thought it was brilliant the way McNulty captures what a child's (or anyone's) feelings might be as they hurtle through the dark expanse of space, far away from the comfort of Earth and home. ("Up here in space you may feel very alone. Don't look back at the Earth. It would make you even lonelier.")

Kellogg illustrates a variety of moods, experiences and concepts from eye-catching perspectives. There is whimsy: an astronaut floats weightlessly around inside the capsule amidst a swarm of playing cards, and, later in the book an unexpected herd of hypothetical moon cows makes an appearance! There is quite a lot of loneliness in Kellogg's space: A lone astronaut hops around and explores the strange, barren, black and grey moonscape for several pages. In a compelling two-page spread, Kellogg depicts a lone astronaut, standing on the Moon under a lonely black sky -- the scene is printed with the darkest jet black ink I have EVER seen printed in any picture book. At the end of the journey, the astronaut returns to an exuberant fold out frieze of Earth's magnificently varied biodiversity, under a shining sun and clear sky with children swimming in fresh, clear water -- the essential element that makes our planet habitable. I was especially pleased to see this book, since another excellent children's book about the Moon, E.C. and Robin Krupp's book, The Moon and You, is not readily available anymore. I highly recommend this book for any elementary school library, or for the book collections of Kindergarteners to second graders. I also would not be surprised if it wins some children's book awards in the months to come.

Editorial Review:

"If you decide to go to the moon," writes Faith McNulty, "read this book first. It will tellyou how to get there and what to do after youland. The most important part tells you how to get home. Written in the second person, the text allows the reader to participate in every aspect of the journey, from packing ("don't forget your diary and plenty of food") to liftoff (at first you'll feel heavy; don't worry") to traveling thorugh space (where "the moon glows like a pearl in the black, black sky"). The reader lands at the Sea of Tranquility, the site of the first lunar landing

Looking for a friend? Try these ideas... 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I've been a Steven Kellogg fan for nearly 20 years now. His work is original, engaging, and entertaining. He does his own illustrations which "make" his stories come to life for me.

In this book by Kellogg a lonely little boy is in search of a friend. In the natural course of events the little boy either brings home or asks his mother if he can bring home animal after animal for a pet. Thus the book's title, "Can I Keep Him?" His mother's responses are typical, but the translation of her responses in her son's head (shown in picures also done by Kellogg) are hilarious!

A definite hit with children and adults alike!

Give it a try.

Definitely 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Do you know how the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River were first formed? How about the Great Plains and the Grand Canyon? Some people think these wonders were established by the forces of nature, but those folks clearly haven't heard of Paul Bunyan, the "strongest, smartest, and tallest hero of the tallest of American tall tales." Paul and his pal, Babe the Blue Ox, were responsible for creating all these geographic features as they worked their way west with their unusual lumber crew. Paul's adventures begin when he is just a baby (who can lift a cow over his head) and continue as he grows into the biggest lumberjack in the world. All the basic stories about Paul Bunyan are here in this rollicking tale, as well as a few inventive incidents added by author and illustrator Steven Kellogg.

Kellogg is well known for his stories about Pinkerton the Great Dane, retellings of classic tales such as Chicken Little, and illustrations for books such as How Much Is a Million? by David Schwartz. But Kellogg's most important contribution to children's literature is his series on American folk heroes, including Johnny Appleseed, Mike Fink, Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett, and of course, the tallest hero of the tallest tale of all--Paul Bunyan. A great legend and great fun. (Ages 5 to 9) --Marcie Bovetz

Editorial Review:

Author David M. Schwartz and illustrator Steven Kellogg, who teamed up for the jubilant How Much Is a Million, have returned to the subject of money in If You Made a Million. Marvelosissimo the Mathematical Magician and his team of cheerful kids (and their multitude of animal friends) wield dusters, brooms, plungers, shovels, and cement as they take on feeding fish, dusting ducks, painting pots, transplanting trees, building bridges, and babysitting ogres. For each job, they'll be paid an appropriate amount of money. But soon the questions arise--what does that much money look like, and how can it be spent, saved, or used to pay off a loan?

"One dollar is worth as much as FOUR QUARTERS or TEN DIMES or TWENTY NICKELS or ONE HUNDRED PENNIES," Marvelosissimo explains, and we witness all the coins, crowding the page. How many and how high a stack is $100 in pennies? Ten thousand of them, in a stack 50-feet high, teeter precariously near a phenomenal airport where the gates are reached via tightrope. Next, Marvelosissimo takes readers to the Bank--a huge edifice complete with red carpets, carved slogans ("Save" and "Be Wise"), and frog attendants--where he explains the concepts of interest and bank loans. Grown-up text brings up the rear of the book, providing additional information on banks, interest and compound interest, checking accounts, loans, and income tax. Throughout, Kellogg's illustrations--highly detailed with silly objects, people, and animals--will keep kids' attention, but the pictures never detract from Schwartz's message that "enjoying your work is more important than money," and "making money means making choices."
