Wonderful Edition of a Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This unabridged edition includes both Jungle Book and Jungle Book 2. The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Editorial Review:

Children will delight in this unabridged version of Rudyard Kipling’s classics, Jungle Books One and Two! Not only does this attractive volume feature the beloved tales of Mowgli, the “man cub” raised by wolves, and Rikki Tikki Tavi, but also the lesser-known but wonderful stories of Toomai, the boy who gets to see elephants dance; Quiquern, who saves his Eskimo people from starvation; and Kotick, the white seal.

Editorial Review:

In this sumptuous volume, eight of Kipling's playful, inventive tales are brought to life by eight of today's most celebrated illustrators, from Peter Sis's elegantly graphic cetacean in "How the Whale Got His Throat" to Satoshi Kitamura's amusingly expressive characters in "The Cat That Walked by Himself." This collection of pourquoi tales is sure to please and delight curious children everywhere who wonder, "Why won't cats come when they're called?" and "How did the rhinoceros get his wrinkly skin?" First told aloud to his own daughter, Rudyard Kipling's inspired answers to these and other burning questions draw from the fables he heard as a child in India and the folktales he gathered from around the world.

Two boys' review: A light introduction to Kipling 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a book version of the Chuck Jones cartoon that aired on CBS in 1975. I recommend you buy the DVD and the book together, so that little kids can hear the characters' voices.

Don't let the other reviewers dissuade you from buying this book because it is an edited version of The Jungle Book. I have a five-year old and a four-year old and they enjoy this shorter version. I'll introduce them to the original book in a couple of years.

Editorial Review:

This title is suitable for children of ages 3-5. Here, is a modern edition of Rudyard Kipling's classic tale from the "Jungle Books" about a mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi who saves a family from the deadly cobra. The tension between mongoose and cobra is life and death, and Rikki emerges as the hero when he not only kills the cobra but saves the family as well.

Things Every Child Should Know 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a child I read these wonderful stories, read them to my child and now he's reading them to his children. How can you get through life not knowing how the Elephant Got His Trunk or how the Camel Got His Hump. In these days of uncertainty, these questions beg to be answered. Even now, and I'm 60, I can quote passages from this book to unenlightened friends and have gotten some of them to read this to themselves and grand children. For so many years, Kipling was out of favor, it's nice that a new generation of children are reading these wonderful stories.

Just So Stories for Little Children 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Very poor quality. There are symbols and characters in the text. Also, there are picture captions inside the text with no pictures. There are page numbers and the book title in the middle of the text. The first letter beginning each story is missing. No stars, sorry, even though I had to give them one because the computer won't let you do it otherwise. I did read these to the children, but wow, it was hard figuring out what to leave out and what to leave in because the pictures (that aren't there) have captions in the text. Really bad.

Editorial Review:

Kipling's own drawings, with their long, funny captions, illustrate his hilarious explanations of How the Camel Got His Hump, How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, How the Armadillo Happened, and other animal How's. He began inventing these stories in his American wife's hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont, to amuse his eldest daughter--and they have served ever since as a source of laughter for children everywhere.

Editorial Review:

One of the particular pleasures of reading Kim is the full range of emotion, knowledge, and experience that Rudyard Kipling gives his complex hero. Kim O'Hara, the orphaned son of an Irish soldier stationed in India, is neither innocent nor victimized. Raised by an opium-addicted half-caste woman since his equally dissolute father's death, the boy has grown up in the streets of Lahore:
Though he was burned black as any native; though he spoke the vernacular by preference, and his mother-tongue in a clipped uncertain sing-song; though he consorted on terms of perfect equality with the small boys of the bazar; Kim was white--a poor white of the very poorest.
From his father and the woman who raised him, Kim has come to believe that a great destiny awaits him. The details, however, are a bit fuzzy, consisting as they do of the woman's addled prophecies of "'a great Red Bull on a green field, and the Colonel riding on his tall horse, yes, and'--dropping into English--'nine hundred devils.'"

In the meantime, Kim amuses himself with intrigues, executing "commissions by night on the crowded housetops for sleek and shiny young men of fashion." His peculiar heritage as a white child gone native, combined with his "love of the game for its own sake," makes him uniquely suited for a bigger game. And when, at last, the long-awaited colonel comes along, Kim is recruited as a spy in Britain's struggle to maintain its colonial grip on India. Kipling was, first and foremost, a man of his time; born and raised in India in the 19th century, he was a fervid supporter of the Raj. Nevertheless, his portrait of India and its people is remarkably sympathetic. Yes, there is the stereotypical Westernized Indian Babu Huree Chander with his atrocious English, but there is also Kim's friend and mentor, the Afghani horse trader Mahub Ali, and the gentle Tibetan lama with whom Kim travels along the Grand Trunk Road. The humanity of his characters consistently belies Kipling's private prejudices, and raises Kim above the mere ripping good yarn to the level of a timeless classic. --Alix Wilber

"Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!"

A classic story from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, adapted and illustrated by award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney, this is the tale of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a fearless young mongoose.

Soon after a flood washes Rikki into the garden of an English family, he comes face-to-face with Nag and Nagaina, two giant cobras. The snakes are willing to attack Rikki, and even the human family who lives there, to claim the garden and house for themselves. But they do not count on the heart and pride of the brave little mongoose.

I finally have my own copy 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I grew up reading and re-reading theses stories. I never found a compilation of the Mowgli stories I liked though, at least not an affordable one.

This one gave me not only Mowgli but Rikki-tikki-tavi. All with excellent illustrations that add but do not intrude on the stories.

This is a classic that should be on every bookshelf.

Editorial Review:

For the past one hundred years, Rudyard Kipling's classic tales of Mowgli, the lost boy raised by wolves in the jungles of India, have captivated children and adults alike.

Mowgli's days are filled with danger, wonder, and excitement. He learns the ways of the jungle from the wise old bear, Baloo, and the great black panther, Bagheera. He is befriended by the faithful wolf, Gray Brother, and is carried off by the crafty Monkey-People -- only to be rescued by the mighty python, Kaa. And through it all, Mowgli knows that he must someday face his sworn enemy: the ferocious man-hating tiger, Shere Khan.

Presented here in the author's preferred order are all of Kipling's thrilling Mowgli stories, as well as the beloved tale of the brave mongoose, Rikki-tikki-tavi. Brilliantly captured in eighteen lush watercolors by Caldecott Honor artist Jerry Pinkney, this handsome centenary edition will be treasured by readers of all ages.

The Real Thing 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 41 people found this review helpful.

My favorite books from childhood have always been Milne's "The World of Pooh" and Kipling's "The Jungle Book". Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece.

This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

Editorial Review:

The story of Mowgli, the Man-Cub raised by wolves in the jungles of India, is one of the greatest literary works of all time. This magnificent edition of Kipling's masterpiece is illustrated by Hans Christian Andersen Medalist Robert Ingpen.
Rescued as an infant from the savage tiger Shere Khan, Mowgli is reared by a pack of wolves. His days are filled with excitement and danger as he learns the ways of the jungle from Bagheera the panther and the wise bear, Baloo. As the boy grows, he also learns he must take his place among his own kind—but first, he must face Shere Khan in a battle of wits and strength to discover the true King of the Jungle….Along with the story of Mowgli are other jungle tales—including "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," "The White Seal," and "Toomai of the Elephants"—lending depth and diversity to our understanding of Kipling's India.
