This is a horrible book to give a kid 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My parents gave this book to me when I was a kid because I was a "late bloomer". I really think that was the beginning of my self esteem issues. I was unaware that I was a "late bloomer" until they pointed it out to me by giving me the book. I can remember being so sad reading it and thinking there was something wrong with me. Now that my daughter is a bit of a late bloomer, it's gotten me thinking about this book. Please don't buy it for your kid. If you do, please explain to them why you're giving it to them. Don't leave it to them to draw their own conclusions that they are like Leo they can't do anything right.

Classic Must-have 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful resource to have as part of your professional library when working with children.

Editorial Review:

Leo isnt reading, or writing, or drawing, or even speaking, and his father is concerned. But Leos mother isnt. She knows her son will do all those things, and more, when hes ready. Reassuring for other late bloomers, this book is illustrated with beguiling pictures.Saturday Review.\n

I still have it memorized! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My favorite illustration is the one where the mother mouse is feeding her son (or daughter?) an impossibly large cheese banquet, much to his/her great delight. A wonderful book!

Classic funny book for preschoolers and a bit older 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A clever funny and warm little story that reads quicky. Bright, simple and charming drawings highlight the adventures of a small mouse who triumphs over troubles to bring his family together. A very satisfying ending and a book that kids will want to hear again, and again, and again...

Editorial Review:

In a series of delightfully imaginary achievements, "nobody's mouse" transforms himself into the beloved hero of his mother, father, sister, and brand-new baby brother. In their very first collaboration, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Robert Kraus and Jose Aruego give charm and validity to one of childhood's more difficult experiences. Tender and catchy, Robert Kraus's rhyming text, combined with Jose Aruego's large, vibrantly clever illustrations, makes for a storytime classic. This happy picture book is brusting with wit, tenderness, and joyful ingenuity.

Wake up, little Milton. Wake up! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Having taken the world by storm with their mightily successful "Leo the Late Bloomer" author Robert Kraus and that dynamic illustrating duo of Jose and Ariane Aruego decided to give the world of picture books another go. As with "Leo", the title character in "Milton the Early Riser" has a problem. It's not a huge problem, nor a particularly tragic one, but it bugs him just the same. Milton (an adorable panda cub) has woken up early and there is no one else up and nothing at all to do. To amuse himself Milton attempts to watch television (only the color bars are on), to jump up and down, to dance and do tricks, and finally to sing. It's the singing that wrecks the most damage to the other drowsy animals in Milton's neighborhood. An unexpected repercussion of Milton's little song is that the very mountains and trees themselves shake and tremble and a huge whirlwind blows the other sleeping animals hither and yon. Patiently, Milton puts everyone back in their proper place, tiring himself in the process. When his parents wake up Milton is fast asleep, a small smile on his face.

The Aruegos are especially talented at making you feel sorry for their picture book creations. Though Milton is never put through any particularly dire straights, you feel really sorry for him when he plods about, alone and lonely. Fortunately, he's a bit of a card. By amusing himself with funny body positions and clever balancing tricks he also amuses the child reader. The book is infused with the regular fabulous colors and creations one has come to expect from this artistic duo. Not only beautiful, but also funny. Milton is particularly amusing when he thinks up original ways of schlepping animals from place to place to place.

The story's good too. I should probably mention that. But I love the Aruegos and for me they're the whole reason to pick up this book. It's a sweet story, sure. But it's also a fabulous book to flip through. Lovely looking. Lovely reading.

Editorial Review:

The first one to awake, Milton the Panda tries hard to wake all the other animals but to no avail.

A Feel Good Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was young when I first heard the story of Herman the Helper. I liked the way the pictures and words made me feel so good inside. Although the book was on loan from the library and had to be returned, my persistent parents looked everywhere for the book and finally located it in California. The book made its way back home with them in NY, and I still have it, 20 years later!

This imaginative and colorful story is a children's classic. 5 out of 5 stars.

Herman the Helper was my favorite book as a little girl, and I was thrilled to find it at Amazon. The illustrations are so colorful and inviting; I used to spend hours with this book. The story is also upbeat and very charming, so if you have kids, or if you still feel like one, you'll love Herman!

Herman the Helper 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful book for toddlers. Teaches the pure joy of giving and plants the seed to look for ways of helping others. It is fun interactively - counting, hide & seek Herman, colors & shapes and problem solving.

Editorial Review:

Herman the helpful octopus is always willing to assist anyone who needs his help--old or young, friend or enemy.

a children's classic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a book that my mom used to read to me & now reads to my little brothers. It's a children's classic for every parent, grandparent, or even older sibling to read to young children.

Editorial Review:

The hero of the classic Whose Mouse Are You? runs away from home when he decides his family doesn't love him. Luckily, he doesn't run farther than the nearest telephone booth. "Wonderful...resonates with emotions deeply felt by young children."--Publishers Weekly.

leo and louie are just like my children 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The first time I read this book I started to cry. It touched my heart so deeply. Louie doesn't play like other little kids, or speak either. This has his big brother Leo(from the first book, Little Leo the Late Bloomer)very concerned. Leo decides he will help his little brother how to play, write, and speak. To no avail. Soon Leo finds that Louie just does things differently from the norm. I have an autistic daughter with a big sister who is alway thinking of her little sister. This book is cute, warm and endearing. The illustrations are wonderfully alive. If I had enough money I'd buy this book for every big brother and sister with a special needs sibling.

Editorial Review:

Robert Kraus's Little Louie the Baby Bloomer picks up where the 1971 classic Leo the Late Bloomer leaves off. This time, young Leo (the original late-blooming tiger) is on the scene to help his little brother Louie, who seems to be a late bloomer, too. Leo is distressed that his little brother can't throw a ball or pull a wagon, can't talk, and doesn't even know how to play--"So Leo stopped trying to play with Little Louie and decided to teach Louie instead." Day and night, these brotherly life lessons continue, until one day, on his own, Little Louie finally blooms. (His first word is "Leo," of course!) Simple, spare prose and the artful, endearing illustrations of Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey make this sweet story of late-blooming, patience, and sibling love come to life. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

A Great Read and Reread... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

From the first time I read this to my 2 1/2 year old daughter, it has become one of her bedtime favorites. We read it at least 4 times most every evening. It is a must have for any toddler who has a thing for bugs. She especially likes the ladybug character and she loves the end when all the bugs find out why the lazy caterpillars have been sleeping so much. It's her favorite in the "How Spider Saved..." series.
