don't give up! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book had a huge impact on me as a child.

Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned.

I read this book to my own kids now, and they love it as much as I do.

Editorial Review:

Ruth Krauss, author of A Hole Is to Dig, has crafted a story almost Zen-like in its simplicity. A little boy plants a carrot seed and waits patiently, tending to it carefully, while everyone around him insists that "it won't come up." His conviction is steadfast, however, and sure enough, a carrot worthy of first prize at any state fair springs forth from the earth. Krauss's husband, Crockett Johnson (creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon), illustrated The Carrot Seed, and while the little boy is rendered with uncomplicated lines, all of his hope, confidence, and serenity shine through. The image that resonates most strongly in this minimalist tale is the unfaltering faith of the mild-mannered little boy. Young readers learn that standing your ground in the face of opposition and doubt can often result in twice the reward expected (even thrice the reward, if judging by the girth of this carrot). Second generation read 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for something to send to my 4-year-old grandson and discovered this wonderful book that his father, now 44, loved when he was little. It is a complete delight, both for kids and the adults that have to read it (and read it, and read it...) to them. I still happily remember some of the definitions, these many years later. The text was written by children and the Maurice Sendak illustrations are priceless. This is one for the ages -- a real classic.

Rugs are so dogs have napkins! 5 out of 5 stars.

I spent HOURS with this book as a child -- the hands down favorite in our family then and now with another generation -- I have bought oodles of copies for kids I know. Great illustrations, hilarious "definitions"... and always, always, in the world of Krauss and Sendak, safety, love, compassion, respect, and hilarity. Absolutely captures the world(s) of children. Ruth Kraus spoke with preschoolers to get their sideways views of the world. The tiny illustrations and compendium-like organization really do capture the "tiny"-yet-expansive world of kids. This is joy between two covers!

Editorial Review:

Ruth Krauss and Mary Blair's I Can Fly won awards upon its first publication in 1951 and has not lost an iota of its charm. The first pages open to a girl standing on a swing, sailing high in the sky next to a bird whose feathers match her dress: "A bird can fly./ So can I." She can moo like a cow, grab like a crab, be merrier than a terrier, and pick, pick, pick like a little chick. Krauss's simple verses capture a child at play and provide wonderful rhythms for a lively, interactive read-aloud session: "Crunch crunch crunch/ I'm a goat out to lunch," Blair's playful illustrations are as exuberant as the story-poem, with their gorgeous (truly '50s!) palette and bold compositions that cleverly juxtapose the girl with her pretend animal playmates, page by page. Arms outstretched on the loops in the playground, the girl looks just like the crab with its grabby claws; eating celery at the table she mimics the goat eating flowers outside the front door. Young children will revel in the young girl's splendidly confident outlook:"Gubble gubble gubble/ I'm a mubble in a pubble./ I can play/ I'm anything that's anything./ That's MY way." We welcome this timeless classic back into print with open arms, much like an octopus might. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

Remember, I'm not five... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is bound beautifully and my boys liked the premise of the story. I thought it was boring, but then, I'm not five years old...

Editorial Review:

Imagine your whole day lived backward, from beginning to end. When you got up, you’d put on your jacket, then your shirt and pants, and over those your underwear, because after all, backward is backward, and on a backward day backward is the way everything has to be. You’d walk downstairs backward and sit on your chair backward with your back to the table, and when your parents greeted you in the morning you’d say, of course, “Good night.” But how long can a backward day go on? Just long enough for a smart kid to reverse the spell he’s cast on the whole household and return everything to normal. The Backward Day, a delightfully stylish picture book by the Caldecott Prize–winning team of Marc Simont and Ruth Krauss, brings to life a humorous and engaging reversal of ordinary reality that will enchant young children, as well parents.

The Finest Children's Book I Know 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

As a child in the 1950s, this was my very favorite book, much like a deeply treasured playmate. When I became a father, I looked for it to share with my daughter, but it was way, way out of print. Decades later, I became a father again and found a used paperback copy in Canada. My 2 1/2 year old daughter now loves this book as much as I did almost fifty years ago, and asks for it every night. It is timeless. One of the reasons I think it has lasted so well is that much of the ideas the great Ruth Krauss used for the book came from small children themselves. It also features the early work of Krauss'long-time collaborator who went on to write wonderful books himself, Maurice Sendak. I'm very happy that I'll Be You and You Be Me has now been reissued in hardback. If you are a parent of a child under five, do yourself a favor and buy this book--before it goes out of print again

Editorial Review:

From the creators of A Hole Is to Dig comes a reissue of another classic, I'll Be You and You Be Me. Author Ruth Krauss and illustrator Maurice Sendak, with a little help from some young friends, capture all the ups and downs of friendship. A charmingly meandering series of stories, poems, and pen-and-ink line drawings feels like a scrapbook of kid-speak:
--He runs
--I run
--He jumps
--I jump
--He dunks his toast
and I dunk mine
Short-short plays, mysteries, and fairy tales are sprinkled with Sendak's (Where the Wild Things Are, etc.) tiny, sketchy images. Open to any page and dive right in! (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

I'm getting one for every child I know 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book came to our family as a hand-me-down from a neighbor for my 2-year-old son, and now we can't live with out it. The rhymes are so witty, entertaining and infectious that I can't tell people about the book without quoting verbatim. Krauss's playful use of language is eternally endearing and Sendaks quirky illustrations of chair-chomping lions and clumsy giants are a treasure. I had feared that this book would be out of print. Now that I have found it, I am buying it for every child (and parent) I know starting with my three-year-old nephew.

Editorial Review:

Continuing a two-year program to bring back twenty-two Maurice Sendak treasures long out of print, our second season of publication highlights one of the most successful author-illustrator pairings of all time. A pioneer of great children's literature, Ruth Krausspublished more than thirty books for children during a career that spanned forty years. Krauss and Sendak collaborated on eight books, and we are delighted to reintroduce four of these gems in brand-new editions, together with a favorite Maurice Sendak picture book.

Open House for Butterflies 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is awful! I bought this "classic" on the advice of Honey for a Child's Heart and other reviewers comments. I will be returning it. While the illustrations are excellent, there is no story line. Every page is something different. I especially don't like the messages on several of the pages. Things like, "A baby is so you could be the boss", "A good thing to know is what a punch in the nose feels like in case somebody asks, Do you want a punch in the nose?", and "The minute you meet some people you know you will hate their mothers" are inappropriate to teach children of any age. There are a few cute sayings, but the overall feel of the book is negative.

The perfect gift 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must have for women and girls who have the horse "bug". It also makes a perfect gift for any one who loves horses. It is about love, determination and the natural and mysterious connections that women and girls have with their horses. The illustrations are gorgeous and perfectly depict the tender moments of growing up with a horse. A very special book.

A single flower blooming in the woods brings joy. 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 20 people found this review helpful.

A short children's book about animals hibernating in the winter yet who come out to see a happy sight, a flower growing in the middle of the snow. Spring must be near! The book was a 1950 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a children's book.

the unhappy child but happy parent 3 out of 5 stars.

I think this book is really cute, but my son, who is three, is not thrill with it. He thinks its boring. Maybe in a couple of years he will enjoy it more.

I'm really torn on this book 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm so torn.

On the one hand, this is a simply-written, repetitive book about the real start of spring - a flower in the snow - and how all the animals react to that.

On the other hand, the artwork is a little uninspiring, and I'm not certain black-and-white is the color scheme to go with here.

Definitely read before you buy.
