Details kids 4-8 don't need to be concerned about 1 out of 5 stars.

I was very disappointed in this book. I, guess, as a musician I was hoping for more emphasis on music and not twelve pages on bathing, showering, shaving, putting on underwear...well, you get the idea. It's the first Reading Rainbow book I have not liked at all. I had planned to give this to a friend's children but I defintely will not.

Editorial Review:

"It is almost Friday night. Outside, the dark is getting darker," and here and there around the city ninety-two men and thirteen women are getting dressed to go to work. First they bathe and put on their underwear. Then they don special black-and-white apparel. Then when the one hundred and five people are completely ready, each takes a musical instrument and travels to midtown. There, at 8:30 tonight, they will work together: playing.

In these pages Karla Kuskin and Marc Simont combine their talents to give us a delightful and unusual inside view of one way an orchestra prepares.

Rhyming Fun for Everyone 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There is just something about this book. Under My Hood I Have a Hat appears to strike a chord with every preschooler who hears it. This simple rhyming book tells the story of a child getting dressed to go out in cold, snowy weather. Written in a "chant" cadence, it goes through the layers and layers of clothes that must be put on just to go out to walk the dog. At the end, it expresses a humorous warning that the child, now swaddled up like a giant beach ball, must not fall, because, she "can't get up at all." This ending invariably makes my 3 year old giggle and ask if the girl in the pictures is making snow angels.

This book has bright, simple, colorful illustrations that pop off the page. The chanting rhyme of the story is easy to learn and to remember. My daughter's preschool teacher tells me that the entire class loves this book and requests it often; they all end up chanting the story in unison. It is quite amazing that a book about cold weather and snow would make such an impression on young kids in Austin, Texas who have most likely never seen snow.

This is a great "read to me, Mommy" book, as well as an easy beginning reader. My daughter and I have great fun with it.

Editorial Review:

The Best Yet! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I'm 13 years old and my reading teacher, Mrs. Hunley, is reading us essays in the book. The book is hilarious and great. We haven't finished it yet, but I'm looking forward to hearing more of Virginia's stories. Some of the boys in my class are jocks and they don't want anything to do with reading, I'd be surprised if they've ever read a whole book in their lives, but anyways, even they look forward to reading about Virginia. The whole class laughs non-stop through her essays. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Any time you need cheering up... 5 out of 5 stars.

Virginia's essays can do it. My husband first learned of this book when a theologian read excerpts of it in a class. He bought it for me and it immediately became a treasure to us both. Little Miss Hudson will have you in stitches as often as you open the book. We have given "O Ye Jigs" as a gift more than once and will again. Our favorite part is 'Sacraments' (Poor little Melvin).

Editorial Review:

Combining a little girl's humorous outlook on life, her Christian perspective, and the customs and social mores of ninteenth-century America, a collection of essays follows a child's experiences at a religious boarding school.

Wonderful book for toddlers 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 5 year old really loves this book. We have two cats and there are very few books with cats as real characters that kids can relate to. I also like that the cat relates to a boy, since many of the images in our society often show cats or kittens with little girls. If you have a son and cats or kittens please purchase this book for him.

Editorial Review:

So, what's it like to be a cat?

I'm very glad you asked me that.

Are cats afraid of the dark? Where do they prefer to sleep? What time do cats eat their breakfast? And what do they really think of dogs (and people!)? The award-winning team of Karla Kuskin and Betsy Lewin explore the secret inner lives of felines in this beguiling question-and-answer interview between an intrepid child and a very clever cat.

cute 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a poem book featuring a cat named Toots. Toots is a stray. A nice family finds him and gives him a home. He enjoys a nice life with them. He does all the things a cat loves: eats, sleeps and plays! These poems are all about Toots and his exciting life!

What did you like or not like about the book?

We loved the illustrations. They really captured the feeling of how playful Toots is.

Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?

Yes. This would be a great short read for cat lovers of all ages.

Editorial Review:

Toots will win you over just as easily as she walks all over you. She eats, plays, naps, and comes and goes as she pleases. But she is so lovable that youll want her to be your very own animal companion. In this collection of poems, an ode to the authors own cat, Karla Kuskins evocative and whimsical phrases perfectly capture Toots attitude and charm. Vibrant, playful illustrations by Lisze Bechtold make the pages come alive with feline energy.

Sweet book about family ties 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just got this book for my 22 month-old daughter because she loved the illustrations and the title. It is very short and sweet, but has a cute message about how a child gets his or her features from their family. It also has a VERY subtle message about multi-cultural families. A great book for any child, but especially good for children that are constantly told that the look just like other members of the family! Very cute and beautiful pictures!

Editorial Review:

This little girl has her mother's eyes, her father's hair, and her Aunt Jen's funny little toe.

Or does she?

In fact, she is also totally, thoroughly, wonderfully herself.

This book shines as surely as its subject! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It is a great pity that this book is out of print, because it is a lovely work of art, both visually and verbally. The story of Jerusalem is told in a beautiful, poetic style, with certain themes circling and echoing through the text ("When times are bad, they will get better"). The author does an amazing job of giving children the sense of the vast sweep of time, and of the ebb and flow of peoples who have come and gone from the Holy Land. The book does not talk down to children; instead, it leads them along, using ancient forms of repetition to reinforce their memory for each stage of Jerusalem's history. This book is a gem. If you can get the on-tape version, you will be delighted both by the voice of the storyteller and of the background music. This book has become part of my storytelling library; it will take some practice to memorize it all, but what a wonderful, shining story to tell!

Editorial Review:

Evokes the spirit of an ancient city, recalling David, Nebuchadnezzer, Herod, Hadrian, Constantine, Saladin, Sulieman, and the many groups who came to conquer; and observes that despite 3000 years of being battered, burned, and rebuilt, Jerusaleum shines peacefully in the moonlight.

lots of animals and their sounds in an older book 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Roar and more sounds that animals make will be illustrated in this children's book that might make a little animal out of your child. The book is full of rhyming poems about a variety of poems. It is easy for children to identify the animals in the illustrations but I found the brightly colored pictures a little boring. They aren't very detailed and didn't appeal to me or my son very much. The poems are a little bland as well. This seemed like a little fun with all the animals, but not exceptional for me and my toddler.

Editorial Review:

Rhyming text presents the behavior and noises of animals such as the lion, snake, and kangaroo.

Golly goshen, where have you been dear Kuskin 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is magical and mischievious. This book brings to mind instant comparisons to the masterworks of Shel Silverstein. But Ms. Kuskin can maintain a certain gentleness that was often absent in Shel's poetry anthologies. This may also be some of the best, most magical drawings from Sergio Ruzzier, truly another unneeded reason to buy this book.
I am supremely cheap. I love the library. I needed to own this item. Get it, laugh, feel, find some strangely wonderful sweetness.

Editorial Review:

Write about a radish
Too many people write about the moon.

The night is black
The stars are small and high
The clock unwinds its ever-ticking tune
Hills gleam dimly
Distant nighthawks cry.
A radish rises in the waiting sky.

This long-awaited, comprehensive collection by acclaimed poet Karla Kuskin contains her most celebrated poems as well as new works never before published. Whether she's writing about napping cats, reaches of beaches, or radishes as beautiful as the moon, Moon, Have You Met My Mother? amuses while it inspires.
