Stop and smell the flowers... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is not a review, others have done that excellently, it is a memory. When i was eight, Ferdinand was my favourite. Thirty eight years later and unremembered until finding it just now, the flashback was so intense i could hardly finish reading the Amazon review through tears of nostalgia. I smelled the flowers and felt that simple happiness that Ferdinand radiated all over again. If you want your child to enjoy a great yarn, be engaged by intense illustrations, learn to be peaceable and stay true to themselves, and have a powerful remembrance of a book later in life, get them "The Story of Ferdinand".

MY 6 YR OLD LOVES IT! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The pictures are entertaining and the speaker captures the attention. My daughter is one to please adults, though. If your child is unruly, I'm not sure this book would work very much. A good reinforcer and fodder(sp?) for discussion.

Editorial Review:

"No matter where you are or who you are, there are four main things that you have to do if you want to make good friends and keep them.

You have to be HONEST
You have to be FAIR
You have to be STRONG
and you have to be WISE
And there is no good in trying to fool yourself. All that isn't so easy."

In a time when all the rules for raising children have been redefined dozens of times, here is a book for bewildered parents from a simpler time when we all agreed on what was right and what was wrong. First published in 1946, Munro Leaf's How To Behave And Why gives touchingly sincere yet gently funny lessons in Honesty, Fairness, Strength, and Wisdom. Originally intended for the very young, but with meaning for us all, How To Behave and Why is a true classic, charmingly illustrated with childlike drawings, and with a timeless message. It is a sure guide for teaching children (and adults) how to behave.

If your children aren't saying things like ain't, gimmee, etc. stay away! 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I really wanted to like this book, but I don't. He is writing to teach children not to say words like "ain't" which I would like to think most people don't say. He has a point with the word "gimmee" but it's pretty much the only one-- I made the mistake of reading it and my daughter never said that and now she knows the word.

The rest of the book has simple conjugations-- I ran, he ran, we ran, I run, etc. that are not such an issue.

The book we need is a book modeling interactions between people saying please and thank you, not a book instructing kids not to say "ain't".

His other book, How to Behave and Why, is better, but still has that instructional feel which may not be the best way to get a message across.

Editorial Review:

Updated for the 21st century, How to Speak Politely and Why is a picture book with a point: proper speech and good grammar without nagging. It aims to remove “ain’t” and “uh-huh” and “gimme” and “got” and a score of unfortunate nuances by a simple, sure painless and humorous process. In his signature style of amusing stick figure drawings and captions, Leaf makes clear such things as the difference between can and may, and the reason why one does not say “he done it” or “she come.”
Exasperated parents (and grandparents) faced with the unpleasant task of dealing with grammatical lapses acquired by their children from (gasp!) their neighbor’s children will be delighted (and relieved) by this veritable “grammar without tears.” Teachers will find it an indispensable ally, and even the culprits themselves—the children—will discover that learning to speak politely and correctly isn’t such a chore after all.

Editorial Review:

Orphaned at a young age, Wee Gillis divided the year between his two families. Not quite fitting in with either one, he tried to appease them the best he knew how. In the foggy highlands of Scotland he would sit still for hours on a rock, holding his breath not to scare the stags he was watching for his father’s relatives. In the vast lowlands of the country, he would use all his might to call the cattle home that his mother’s family owned.

The day came when Wee Gillis was asked to decide which family he would choose to be with forever. Uncles from both sides walked him halfway up a hill to a place that was exactly between the highlands and the lowlands, trying to convince Wee Gillis that their own side of the family was the perfect fit for him. Amid all the commotion, Wee Gillis noticed a stranger who had come up behind them. Destitute, the man lamented that he had built the biggest bagpipes in all of Scotland for use on this exact spot, but could no longer play them because he made them too big. Both of Wee Gillis’s uncles tried to play them but each lacked the skill it took for the instrument. Finally Wee Gillis picked them up and used all of his might to blow into the tremendous pipes, making a tremendous sound. Now having found his true calling, he sits in a spot exactly between the highlands and the lowlands, playing music for all of Scotland to hear.

Editorial Review:

It takes a Herculean effort to get my child to: a) brush his or her teeth b) go to sleep c) take a bath d) eat his or her vegetables. If any (or all) of these apply, continue reading. From the treasure chest of Munro Leaf comes another classic in which the beloved author and illustrator uses his time-proven method of talking to children straight—simply getting them to see it how it is. In Brushing Your Teeth Can Be Fun (originally published in 1943 as Health Can Be Fun), Leaf leaves his audience in no doubt that not only can health be fun, but good sense, as well. This book will help boys and girls understand why they should drink their milk, eat their vegetables, get exercise, go to bed on time, brush their teeth, keep clean, and a dozen other things both big and small that are important to building strong, healthy, and happy bodies. With his trademark stick figure drawings and witty text, Leaf will once again elicit peals of mirthful laughter from his little readers, not to mention some big ones who will find this humorous hygiene handbook an indispensable aid in the all-too-familiar night-time (come to think of it, all the time) war with their children about the merits of keeping good health.

One of the BEST Children's books ever!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book was originally published by Munro Leaf in 1937 and has been out of print for a VERY LONG time. This book has a great appeal to children because it is about animals and celebrates their many different traits. It also teaches the moral that everyone is unique and special in his or her own way, and that one should be proud of who they are. It is a story of a dachshund, Noodle, who gets one wish from a dog fairy. Noodle decides he wants to be a new size and shape, since being a dachshund he has short legs and a long body. The story is Noodle's quest to find out the best size and shape, and along the way he meets many zoo animals who all have different opinions. In the end Noodle realizes exactly what size and shape is best for him. This story was my mother's favorite book as a child, and my brother and I grew up reading this story with our pet dachshund. This book has been well-loved, and I am excited that it is back in print for children to love and cherish today.

Editorial Review:

Noodle is a little dog who's very long from front to back and very short from top to bottom, which makes it hard for him to dig for bones. One day Noodle finds a wishbone, and the dog fairy arrives with a flip-flap of wings to grant him a wish: "What size and shape do you want to be?" Noodle asks all the animals at the zoo what he should wish for, only to discover he might just be perfect -- exactly the way he is.

Originally published in 1937 by children's book greats Ludwig Bemelmans and Munro Leaf, NOODLE is a classic with a quiet wisdom that continues to hold true today.

LETTERS
like A and B and C and D
or T and Y and I and G and O and L.
When we put some of them together
in little bunches, we call those bunches
WORDS
like the word CAT or DOG or BOY or GIRL.

On the heels of Manners Can Be Fun comes the next title in Munro Leaf's acclaimed "Fun" series, Reading Can Be Fun, first published in 1953, with lessons as timely and enduring today as they were then. In his signature style of stick-figure drawings and wholesome text, Leaf demonstrates that reading really can be fun and educational at the same time. As he describes, "The whole wonderful story of the past and the interesting days we live in now take on new color and meaning when we learn more about them through the books we read."
With humorous explanations and illustrations children will chuckle while processing the fundamental reasons for learning to read. Books can be best friends, they are the source for good ideas, they are a vehicle for exploring faraway places and meeting all kinds of people, and they help boys and girls get ready to become grownups. Profoundly affecting, reading is a powerful tool in shaping a child's path to confident, happy adulthood.
Leaf's "Fun" books also include Grammar, History, Arithmetic, and Science.

Kids love tricksters! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Anansi is lazy and he likes to play tricks! This time, turtle outsmarts Anansi. Anansi does all of the work while turtle gets tired. The kids in my class ask to listen to this book and the other Anansi tales, retold by Eric Kimmel, over and over again. This one takes a little bit more thinking to figure out what the tricks are.

We love Anansi! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

All the books in the Anansi series are fun! We love to read them to our children for many reasons: They learn something (at least somewhat) useful, they're enjoyable for them AND they're enjoyable for us! The kids love to see how someone will trick this lazy spider!

The first time we found this book was in a library, and it was a 'book on tape' set. If you can find this, we recommend it, too, as the reader is very funny! :)

In this book, Anansi wants a fish just like his friend the turtle has just caught. And what fun it is to see the logic turtle uses to get Anansi to do all the work while turtle 'gets tired'! We love this book! It is good clean fun! :)

Editorial Review:

Anansi the spider plans to trick Turtle into catching a fish for his dinner, but Turtle proves to be smarter and ends up with a free meal. Explains the origin of spider webs.

Ferdinandus Taurus Excellent for Reviewing the Subjunctive 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Ferdinandus Taurus is a great little book just for reading aloud in class. But for a review of the subjunctive primary and secondary sequences, it is truly outstanding. The students appreciate the repetitive vocabulary (like English versions of the Doctor Seuss books), for it means they are able to concentrate on the sequencing of the Latin subjunctive clauses with the indicative main clauses. The pictures, the story, and an increased interest in the subjunctive; it just doesn't get any better than this!

Editorial Review:

Once upon a time, there lived in Spain a bull named Ferdinand. While his brothers liked to charge around the field, butt their heads together and to generally act ferocious, Ferdinand liked nothing better than to sit under the cork tree and smell the flowers. He was, you see, a placid and a gentle bull whose only desire in life was to be let alone. And his life would have proceeded very nicely had he not one day placed his considerable rump on a bumblebee on the very same day that five men arrived from Madrid searching for a new star for the corrida.

This classic tale by Munro Leaf, which has enchanted children for over fifty years, is here translated for the first (and certainly the last) time into (mirabile dictu) Latin. It comes with a complete glossary of words, and, of course, with the wonderful, appropriate, and droll drawings from the pen of the inimitable Robert Lawson (for whom the book was originally written).
