Editorial Review:

"The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea / In a beautiful pea-green boat. / They took some honey, and plenty of money, / Wrapped up in a five-pound note." The Owl and the Pussycat make quite a couple. On the decks of the pea-green S.S. Dorabella, the lovesick, bulgy-eyed Owl serenades his jowly feline sweetheart, inspiring her to grab him, dip him, and propose (demand?) marriage. They sail to an island, where they persuade the Piggywig to sell them the ring at the end of his nose to use as a wedding ring, are married by a turkey who lives on a hill, and then dance by the light of the moon. James Marshall--beloved creator of the unforgettable hippos George and Martha--graces Edward Lear's classic nonsense poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" with his winsome, goofy watercolor sketches in the final work before his death in 1992. As his dear friend Maurice Sendak writes in the afterword of this historic book, "There was never such an Owl and Pussycat, certainly not since Edward Lear, and for my money James surpasses Lear's original pictures in sheer giddy humor and heartfeltness." This is the kind of book that adults wish they had grown up with, and that children will remember their whole lives. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

Gorgeous illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book at the Tate Museum in London recently and was completely smitten with the beautiful illustrations. Both of my children loved to recite "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear when they were small. Now my grandchildren will be able to have this book. I've never seen better illustrations of the poem. Wait until you get to the page where "they dined upon mince and slices of quince". It's too adorable!

Editorial Review:

In this beautifully illustrated edition of the beloved nonsense poem by Edward Lear, Anne Mortimer takes the reader on the delightful voyage of the Owl and the Pussycat as they sail across the sea and travel into lush jungles, all by the light of the moon. Filled with rich detail and breathtaking artwork, this is a glowing tribute to the power of true love.

Teacher's Viewpoint 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

After looking through this poetry book, I decided that it would be a great book for my first grade students to own. Our classical Christian School encourages poetry memorization, and I know that my students could read many of the poems, and their parents could read the others to them. What a great bargain for classic children's poetry.

Classic Favorites 4 out of 5 stars.

Inexpensive and filled with gems. Enjoying old favorites and some I had never read before.

Not usual short nursery rhymes 4 out of 5 stars.

Book arrived quickly, new condition. This would be a book for adults to read to preschoolers, help memorize some of the poems. There are no illustrations, just text. Some poems are long...not many of the short familiar nursery rhymes that children like to chant. Low cost. Some of the poems were new to me.

Editorial Review:

Superb treasury of time-honored poetic gems includes Lewis Carroll’s "The Walrus and the Carpenter," Edward Lear’s "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat," Eugene Field’s "Wynken, Blynken and Nod," Emily Dickinson’s "I’m Nobody! Who are you?," Robert Louis Stevenson’s "The Swing," many more. Printed in large, easy-to-read type.

Editorial Review:

"He reads but he cannot speak Spanish, / He cannot abide ginger-beer; / Ere the days of his pilgrimage vanish, / How pleasant to know Mr. Lear!" writes the 19th-century English poet Edward Lear in "Self Portrait of the Laureate of Nonsense." When The Book of Nonsense was first published in 1845, under Lear's pseudonym, Derry Down Derry, it was a success--some say it turned the once stodgy, didactic world of children's literature on its head.

This rollicking poetic romp begins with "A Book of Nonsense" (1846), a slew of more-odd-than-bawdy limericks about the Young Lady of Wales, the Old Man of Vienna, and many, many more, all accompanied by the spare, whimsical ink drawings done by Lear himself. Part two urges readers to leap into "Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany and Alphabets" (1871), including the classic "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" and "The Jumblies" (who "went to sea in a Sieve"), along with equally rib-tickling but lesser known selections such as "The Nutcrackers and the Sugar-Tongs." In this section, you'll also discover instructions for how to make Crumbobblious Cutlets, a "Nonsense Botany" guide featuring the Bottlephorkia spoonifolia and the Manypeeplia upsidownia, and "Nonsense Alphabets," strange little poems about quills, rattlesnakes, screws, and other words beginning with letters.

Part three merrily inflicts "More Nonsense Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, &c." (1877) on readers with the well-known plant Washtubbia circularis and more wacky limericks such as "There was an old person of Bar, / Who passed all her life in a jar, / Which she painted pea-green, to appear more serene, / That placid old person of Bar." As icing on a very strange cake, the last section offers "Laughable Lyrics, A Fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music, &c." (1877), notably including "The Pobble Who Has No Toes." Lear's quirky sense of humor infuses every line of his ever skillful verse, which is often alliterative, and always very silly. Lear, the Laureate of Nonsense, frolics frivolously, and no one should ever go to sea in a Sieve without a copy of this book in tow. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

PLEASING STORY AND PLEASING ILLUSTRATIONS. KIDS LOVE IT. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A strange critter, the Quangle Wangle. Lives is a tree and is almost completely covered by a very strange hat. The Quangle Wangle is lonely but this is soon taken care of by a group of other strange critters who decide the hat is the ideal place to take up residents. There are several versons of this particular book out there using at least three different illustrators or artists. All are quite good, all contain the wonderful nonsense rhymes of th author, and I suppose it all boils down as to which version you were raised with as to which is your favorite. All are excellent reading, all have excellent illustrations. Just a warning though, if you purchase this book, be sure you purchase the one that you have in mind...it can be a bit confusing. Recommend this one highly.

Editorial Review:

The Quangle Wangle shares his enormous hat with a multiplying cast of peculiar creatures in this silly, singsong tale from the celebrated author of THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT.

On the top of the Crumpetty TreeThe Quangle Wangle sat,But his face you could not see,On account of his Beaver Hat.Poor Quangle Wangle. Life can get pretty lonely beneath a hat that's a hundred and two feet wide. But then along come Mr. and Mrs. Canary, who ask, "May we build a nest on your lovely Hat?" Following close behind are the Stork, the Duck, and the Owl, the Frog and the Fimble Fowl, the Pobble who has no toes, the Dong with a luminous nose. . . . Only classic nonsense poet Edward Lear could create such an odd and amiable crew -- enticingly rendered by Louise Voce in the most vivid of hues.

King Lear 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I was given this book by my father when I was seven years old and was thoroughly enchanted by it, and remain so to this day. The Owl and the Pussy Cat has passed into children's lore - many people know the rhyme through the song (was it Burl Ives?) or through new illustrated versions of it. They know the limericks (or at least the form, if not the rather esoteric content - the old man with the Beard, for instance, and the lady with the excessively long chin who

had it made sharp
and purchased a harp
and played several tunes with her chin).

But do they know of The Dong with the Luminous Nose, or the Pobble Who Has No Toes, or the short history of Violet, Slingsby, Guy, and Lionel? Or the illustrated botanical alphabet with such plants as the ManyPeeplia Upsidedownia (you'd have to see the drawing!) It would be impossible to say how many times I read, re-read, and enjoyed this book as a child and an adult, including the rather touching, affectionate introduction to the man himself.

Please, please buy this book. You'll never regret it.

Editorial Review:

The classic collection of nonsense by the greatest nonsensicalist of all time, Edward Lear - inventor of the limerick, and creator of the "Jumblies" and "The Owl and the Pussy Cat".

Editorial Review:

Visions in Poetry is an innovative and award-winning series of classic poems re-interpreted for today's readers by outstanding contemporary artists in distinctively beautiful editions. The sixth Visions in Poetry book is The Owl and the Pussycat, a nonsense poem by Edward Lear, brilliantly illustrated by Stephane Jorisch. The artist's vision begins in a segregated world where different species never mix and everyone hides behind a mask. Against this backdrop an aristocratic owl from Owl Heights and a bohemian pussycat from the other side of the tracks find each other. They escape society's disapproval by sailing in their pea green boat to "the land where the bong-tree grows," a utopia of mismatched creatures living together, their masks doffed for good. Jorisch's playful and fantastic interpretation, inspired in part by Lear's own illustrations as well as the films of Fellini, the art of Miro and The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, is a celebration of love and an exhilarating journey that takes us beyond the quirky charm of this favourite poem.

A was once an apple pie 4 out of 5 stars.

This book covers the alphabet with lyrical poems for each letter and fun illustrations. Some choices for words won't be the best for children who don't read yet, like Lark for L (which looks like a bird and makes me think B) but the overall sing song nature of the text and lovely illustrations will engage many young readers and listeners.

Editorial Review:

A was once an apple pie,PiedyWideyTidyPiedyNice insidey, APPLE PIE!Suse MacDonald adapts Edward Lear's fun-to-say, alphabet rhyme in a picture book that combines the classic with the up-to-date. Bright, bold illustrations are created with handpainted cut paper. A Bear sniffs an Apple pie, a Cat and Dog are friends, an Eel and Fish share an ocean,a Goose spills a bottle of Ink, while a Hen laughs and later a Mouse is observed by an Owl in a Nest!A stunning book!

Love this book/CD-rom 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a work of art. The book itself is quite simple, but the CD-ROM is absolutely charming - a combination of simple yet sophisticated animations, incredible music and narration. This isn't just for kids - this is something someone of any age can enjoy. It truly brings out the "story" inherent in Lear's charming drawings.

Not just for Lear Fans!

Delightful cd renderings as well 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The book itself has three sections: Absurd ABC, Crazy Colors (all limericks include a reference to color), and Funny Faces (primarily noses). All vintage Lear.

The advantage of this particular volume is the cd which contains a reading of all the material in the book with a delightful musical accompaniment and a visual extension of drawings for the computer with similar musical accompaniment - it includes whimsical plants, a series of cats etc.

An excellent edition of a small portion of Lear's work.

Amazing artwork! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I am not a huge fan of old "nursery rhyme" type poetry, but this book caught my eye and my 3 yr old boys and I love it! The illustrations are simply amazing as each page unfolds from 2 children visiting an eccentric, storytelling neighbor to the children becoming the owl and pussycat. My boys immediately noticed the firepole in the man's house among other curiosities. As the children enjoy a snack and the man reads the poem, the floor turns to water and the window seat to a pea green boat. The bespeckled little boy becomes an owl and girl becomes a cat. The poem is read a second time with them as the main characters and the illustrations cleary 'telling' the story. Just as fluidly, the children return to human form and their mothers call them for dinner as the poem winds down. This book would certainly be a wonderful addition to a classic nursery rhymes collection.

Editorial Review:

The irresistible blend of romance and nonsense in Edward Lear's "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" has made it a classic enjoyed by generations of young listeners. Now celebrated artist Hilary Knight wraps Lear's beloved verse in a richly imagined fantasy where two young listeners find themselves magically transformed and transported to the land where the Bong-tree grows.

Come sail away with them.
