Wonderful, read-out-loud, kid-friendly 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"Jelly Belly" is a book of modern nursery rhymes, along with some very wonderful illustrations. The rhymes generally have a great read-aloud rhythm, and are variously funny, tender, surprising. My daughter loves them and so do I. She's 2 now, and I'm sure this book would have appealed to her much earlier, and will continue to appeal for years.

funny and memorable 4 out of 5 stars.

i owned this book as a child and although some of the poems and illustrations are really gross - there are some really funny ones which used to make my siblings and I laugh aloud!
most of the illustrations are really amazing, with lots of detail.
this book is great for reading aloud and gives kids a feel for the melody and rythym poetry and ryhmes.

Editorial Review:

To generations of children, Dennis Lee is known as a wizard of words, the author of such classics as Alligator Pie, Garbage Delight, The Cat and The Wizard, and the bestseller Bubblegum Delicious. With Jelly Belly, originally published in 1983, Lee created a new Mother Goose. As playful and hilarious as our traditional nursery rhymes, Jelly Belly combines toe-tapping poetry with the beguiling illustrations of Juan Wijngaard (winner of the Mother Goose Award). Jelly Belly is the ideal book-for children ages one to five, for older brothers and sisters, for parents, grandparents and any grown up who remains young at heart.

Editorial Review:

Willoughby finds celebrated author Dennis Lee in an Alligator Pie mode of charming humor and wordplay. Equally suited to parent-child interaction or classroom or daycare groups, Willoughby gets everyone in on the fact. The first two lines set the tone: "Willoughby, wallaby wee / An elephant sat on me." Everyone — from parents to children — then get a chance to change the last word of the first line. Featuring festive color artwork and the lively rhymes of Canada's own "Father Goose," Willoughby Wallaby Woo entertains youngsters while teaching them the joy of words and the pleasures of participation.

My Childhood Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Alligator Pie series filled my childhood with fun and whimsy. I'm pregnant now and I want to buy a whole new collection so that my child will remember "Peter was a pilot, who flew a jumbo jet, who crashed in Lake Ontario and got his bottom wet." Silly and fun.

my favourite book, and I'm 25 5 out of 5 stars.

This was actually my sister's book when we were growing up - but I remember absolutely loving it back then. Now that I have a son, I bought it to read with him. Although he is only 2, he loves the rhythm of the poems and the wacky pictures. His favourite is "Windshield Wipers". A fabulous book for parents to share with their children!

one of the best ever 5 out of 5 stars.

I still have my copy of this book from when I was a kid (copywrite 1974). This book rocked, and I had to dig it up to start reading to my nephews. best ever = on tuesdays I polish my uncle. I still remembered 90% of the words, and I probably hadn't heard it since 1981 or 2!

Editorial Review:

Thirty-seven nonsense verses on a variety of topics include "Thinking In Bed," "On Tuesdays I Polish My Uncle," and "Billy Batter."

This is one of those books that come along once in a blue moon. It is filled with wonderful poems, full of humor, sensitivity, compassion, love and definitely exciting. "You have your Father's Eyes" is great fun and guaranteed to bring a laugh from anyone who hears it. This book is especially fun for Grandparents to read to their grandchildren. Don't know why it is out of print, but they should re-publish it.

Editorial Review:

A collection of thirty nonsense poems including the tale of Nicholas Knock and his friendship with a silver honkabeest.

tremendously funny 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I read this book to my nephew and we giggled our way through the whole thing. The poems are quite imaginative. Some are long, others short. All very funny. My nephew is only 4, and he enjoyed picking out the things "that really wouldn't happen." He and I both loved it

Nobody does it better 5 out of 5 stars.

Dennis Lee is a treasure. My daughter and I devoured Alligator Pie when she was a little girl, chuckling merrily over author Lee's zany humor and vivid imagery. I have subsequently given each new Lee book to the children (and even some of the adults) I know, happy to introduce this outstanding author to those who haven't yet discovered him. Want to make your children/grandchildren/neighborhood kids laugh out loud? Get them anything Dennis Lee has written. He's truly gifted, truly tapped into the mind of the child in all of us.
My highest recommendation.

Editorial Review:

Canadian poet Dennis Lee's poetry is well loved by children around the world. This collection of 41 poems was selected by anthologist Jack Prelutsky from Lee's four previous books of poetry, including The Ice Cream Store. Children in the early grades will chuckle at poems about dinosaurs and alligators, monsters and mud puddles, bears and bees, and belly buttons. Debbie Tilley's exuberant watercolor illustrations perfectly complement Lee's verse; both have the same bouncy good humor that kids love. Invite a dinosaur to dinner at your house (and don't forget some alligator pie for dessert). (Ages 4 to 7)

My favorite children's book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This has got to be one of the most fun books to read. It has a great story about a little girl who has a lion, with a big, bad roar that she unleashes on unsuspecting robbers. Although somewhat gruesome I still love this book. I highly enjoy reading this book to my little brother and sister who love it as well. I hihgly recommend this book as one that should be in any book collection. I've even bought myself a copy and I'm 21.

Rhyming Fun 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Lizzy's Lion may surprise adults at first with it's some what gross discription but it thrills children. It is fun to read!

This book is rhyming fun with it's musical sentences. Dennis Lee has captured a singy-song additude.

The pictures are characteristic of the award winning Marie-Louise Gay. Her pictures are busy and wild. Gay's children are depicted as cute but not perfectly pretty. She makes looking at illustrations fun.

childhood favorite 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been my favorite since I was a child. The words flow so well when reading to myself or my children. Although there are some grafic parts, they don't take away from the poem/story being youthfull and fun. I will always read and share with others this delightful story.

Editorial Review:

A love poem to a jelly donut, an ode to a rocking chair, quatrains by and about bugs and beetles... it's Canadian bard Dennis Lee, at his finest. This quirky poet has been amusing readers for decades with verses both silly and sweet, in such mouthwatering titles as Dinosaur Dinner (With a Slice of Alligator Pie). In Bubblegum Delicious, Lee takes the rhythms of childhood playgrounds and creates verses bursting with appeal, from the wacky "Goober and Guck" ("You'll quack like a duck and / You'll smell like a truck-- / So eat your nice sandwich / Of goober and guck!"), to the poignant "If Lonesome Was a Pot of Gold," to the macabre "Dead Men in Edmonton." A small boy and his dog lead readers through the collection, with a host of hilariously bizarre and uncouth insects slipping in their two cents' worth whenever they can. ("You bug me, slug, you bug me. / You bug me all day long. / So tug your coif and bug right off, / Before I do you wrong.")

Acclaimed illustrator David McPhail bounces right along with Lee on this boisterous ride, capturing the boyish exuberance, whimsy, and tender moments of each verse. After devouring Bubblegum Delicious, readers of all ages will be chomping at the bit for more from the remarkable Dennis Lee. (Ages 6 and older) --Emilie Coulter
