so thoughtfully put together. a beautiful book to browse through and inspire you and your children to pick up a tool and draw, paint and create.

Editorial Review:

In this remarkable and beautiful anthology featuring the likes of Maurice Sendak, Robert Sabuda, Rosemary Wells, and Eric Carle, twenty-three of the most honored and beloved artists in children’s literature talk informally to children—sharing secrets about their art and how they began their adventures into illustration. Fold-out pages featuring photographs of their early work, their studios and materials, as well as sketches and finished art create an exuberant feast for the eye that will attract both children and adults.

Self-portraits of each illustrator crown this important anthology that celebrates the artists and the art of the picture book. An event book for the ages.

Simple and Wonderful! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love this book! It's so simple, perfect for reading to young kids with fairly short attention spans, and the pages are so uncluttered that the point really gets across---two main points, actually---that blue and yellow make green, and that color is just on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. The characters are all color blotches, but treated by the author just as people, and this doesn't seem to confuse kids at all---they accept this odd world and love it. I was reminded of something that used to be shown on Sesame Street LONG along in the early days of the show---when lots of little dots would line up, and sometimes one would be late, or one would have a baby dot with it---the same sort of alternate but clear and simple world!

Sweet story 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great story of love and friendship, but the illustrations are what makes it!

A Lovely Aquatic Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This classic, celebrated picture book is a fantastic achievement in children's literature. Notable for its beautiful aquatic watercolor paintings and graceful prose, the story of an exceptional little fish's communal tragedy, adventures and ultimate triumph are evocatively rendered and easy for children to comfortably digest. This book is a unique celebration of exploration and both individual and collective values: it conveys how the exceptional among us can drive a group to preserve itself and accomplish greatness.

Swimmy 5 out of 5 stars.

Swimmy is a great book to start out with at the beginning of the school year. It teaches cooperation and teamwork.

Excellent Read Aloud For Any Age! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Swimmy, a black fish among a school of red fish, looses his school to a bigger fish, leaving him alone in the ocean world. Lonely Swimmy makes new discoveries as he swims through the wet world. Finally, he meets a new school of red fish, and he introduces them to the wonders that he has discovered. Lionni not only wrote the text for this book, but he also illustrated the pictures. As you read Swimmy, you flow through the words easily. Lionni uses descriptive language to create a logical flow to the story. He also adds in words or vocabulary that are specific to an ocean setting. These words may be harder for a younger student to read, but this story is best used as a read aloud. When creating the illustrations for this text, Lionni uses watercolors to create his ocean scene. He also pays close attention to the use of space, color, and texture. Lionni puts his text within the illustrations creating a notion that they are one. Colors are used to create a mood that goes along with the feelings within the text. The texture of the pictures makes the underwater scene more believable. This book is an excellent choice when looking for just a read a loud or to teach the themes of perseverance, cooperation, and unity.

Inching Along! 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

This Caldecott Honor Book is easy listening for the early child and the young child as a new schoolyear begins. An industrious inch worm is the main character. He engages himself with measuring a variety of birds and lastly outwits the hungry nightingale using his measuring savvy.

Teacher Note: This book can be used to introduce the young child to using standard measurement tools. It can also be used for activities with creative non-traditional measurement activities. For example: Paper clips, hands, feet, craft sticks, shoes, beans, etc. This book can be a springboard to a thematic unit on measurement. It can be extended for study of birds, other nature studies, art experiences, and musical activities as well.

Lionni has Inched his way to Success 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Once upon a time there was a cute, little, green inch worm hanging out on a piece of grass. One day, a robin came up to eat him, but the inch worm talked the robin into letting him measure the robin's tail. Being such a useful worm, the robin did not eat him, but took him to other birds so that they could have something measured by the smart inch worm. Finally, a nightingale told the worm to measure his song or he would eat the little inch worm. Using his little worm brain, the inch worm began measuring the song until he had inched away to safety.
This wonderful book, written and illustrated by Leo Lionni, won the Caldecott Honor in 1961. He has taken a little worm and made the reader fall in love with it through the worm's usefulness in measuring and his cunning ability to escape the hungry nightingale. Even though there are many different scenes, with many various shades of green on them, Lionni has illustrated the little worm in such a way that the reader can always point him out. Children would enjoy finding the worm on each page, especially at the end of the book when he is hiding from the nightingale. Also, we always see the story from an outside perspective; eye level with the grass. It is as if we are another small animal looking in on the story.
The background of each page is pretty much the same. All Lionni has illustrated on each page is the worm and the other details that are needed during that part of the story. For example, while the inch worm is measuring the legs of the heron, Lionni has only portrayed the heron with the worm inching down its leg. I think this technique is good for younger audiences because it helps children focus on the story and keeps their attention for more specific details. This also makes sense because there is a small portion of text to read on each page which means the audience does not have much time to look at the illustrations while the reader is reading to them. As for colors, Lionni has kept them realistic. For example, the flamingo is a bright pink whereas the nightingale's colors are calmer. Overall, the colors in the book make the readers feel at ease and calm. The dull greens of the grass and the open, white background keeps the reader moving along at a steady pace. It's almost as if we know that the inch worm is going to outsmart the different birds and there is no need to get over-excited.
Lionni has intertwined the illustrations and the text in a way that they are dependent on each other. Although you could get the gist of the story by either reading the text or looking at the pictures, by having the illustrations support the text, the reader gets a more detailed, visual story. However, Lionni leaves room for the imagination to add on to the story at any time.
Overall, I loved this book. Lionni has creatively illustrated this cute story, making children and adults want to read it over and over again.
If you are looking for instructional ideas, I would read this story to students in primary grades before doing a lesson on measuring. Then I would have students measure different things around the classroom including themselves. I would also use this book when talking about different types of art. I would have children do a collage or make something with decoupage. They could even re-create a scene from the book!

Editorial Review:

Every animal has a color of its own. "Parrots are green, elephants are gray, pigs are pink." But chameleons change color wherever they go. "On lemons they are yellow. In the heather they are purple." One chameleon is not pleased with his changeable appearance. He thinks, "If I remain on a leaf, I shall be green forever, and so I too will have a color of my own." Of course, what he doesn't take into account is the changes wrought by autumn, and soon the green chameleon is yellow, then red, and then tumbled to the ground for the long black winter night. It isn't until he befriends another older, wiser chameleon that our hero begins to find inner peace, even as his outer surface is transformed again and again.

Leo Lionni, children's book creator extraordinaire, author of such beloved picture books as Frederick, Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, Swimmy, and Inch by Inch, all Caldecott Honor winners, introduces color concepts in an exquisite and touching story. This small board book edition of the classic tale of self-acceptance and friendship will be a favorite for toddlers and parents alike. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

What a terrible message 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Just started buying books for my baby and came across this one. I know that arts are important to society, but that concept is probably a little abstract for a very young mind to grasp. The theme that sticks out most clearly is that you will be a hero if you slack off and mooch off everyone around you. This book will never be read to my kid if I have anything to say about it.

We are Frederick 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Although this book is delightful for the kids, Frederick really inspires YOU!

I'm adding this review for the impact it has had on me as an entrepreneur, idea generator, and casual writer. I think Lionni wrote this book autobiographically as someone who was often focused on less tangible work (absorbing and imagining). While so many laborers around us do the "real work", we spend our time not conforming to the traditions: we generate free content, feedback, software, bug reports, etc., and to many, those are intangibles. We leave traditional jobs to do things that many consider unimportant or even irresponsible wasting of time.

To the chagrin of his hard-working peers, Frederick gathered sunrays, colors, and words. Only much later did he make his profound contribution by translating those into uplifting stories. We should be confident that our creative and generous efforts today are worthwhile, and will collectively be what get us through the long, cold Winters ahead.

Whenever I need inspiration to persist at creative work, and justify my pursuits, I think of Frederick and know that my work is meaningful.

This book is very appropriate for young readers. 4 out of 5 stars.

I enjoy this book very much. The characters are human-like in nature which gives the book charm. Lionni captures the essence of siblings in the cute frog characters. The moral is easy to understand and something to remember for all ages, not just children. A definate must have.

A Christological Fable 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 28 people found this review helpful.

On the surface, this is a simple and sweet tale of three frogs who learn how to share. But as a student of theology and of literature, I must share my insights into this amazing children's book. On a deeper level, this is a Christological parable and a history of salvation through Jesus Christ. Although I admittedly know nothing about Leo Lionni's personal beliefs,I am sure that this is the intended meaning in this fable. The richness and beauty of its symbolism could hardly be an accident!

Three frogs (symbolizing humanity--three being a biblical number of completeness) live in constant disharmony with each other. "The air is mine", "the earth is mine", "the water is mine": their quarrels are so absurd, pointing to pride as the source of their sin, as clearly the air, earth, and water can belong to no one but God. And then One "appears"--the Toad-- who teaches, just as Christ taught during His ministry. He tells them that they must learn to share and live in peace. But they do not listen to Him or follow his teachings. So, it happens that one day they seem to pay for their sin, clinging to separate rocks as flood waters swell and consume their island. It is only when they join together on the single remaining rock that they feel better, "sharing the same fears and hopes". Here, on the rock of the Church, they are saved. When the flood waters subside and recede, they realize: "The large rock that had saved them was no rock at all. 'You saved us!' shouted the frogs when they recognized the toad." They had been sitting on the back of the Toad--who miraculously remains strong through the greatest storm (pointing to His divinity). But it is only when the toad RISES from the waters (i.e. from the dead), that the church/disciples(the frogs) understand the source of salvation---through the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ (the toad). And it is through passing through the flood waters (the waters of Baptism) that salvation is attained.

The book ends with the Church in Paradise. "And later, when they rested in the weeds, they felt happy in a way they had never been before." Leo Lionni's message here is that paradise begins in the heart. (As Christ taught in his parables, such as the parable of the mustard seed.)

Of course, small children will not see or understand many of the theological meanings and messages. It is an excellent book to teach small children about sharing. But it is so much more! I highly recommend this book to Christian families wishing to teach their children the truths of the faith. But of course, you will need to do a lot of "sharing" and listening---not just reading--to get at the heart of this book with your children.

An EXTRAORDINARY book for children! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

"An Extraordinary Egg" is a beginning reader picture book about three sister frogs that live on an island. One of the frogs, Jessica, finds an egg in some stones and brings it home. The three sister frogs believe it is a chicken egg, even though none of them has ever seen a chicken. The egg hatches, and it is an alligator but the frogs still think it is a chicken. They all become good friends, and "the chicken" even saves Jessica's life one day when she falls into the water. Soon though, the chicken's mother and the "chicken" are fatefully reunited. Jessica goes back and tells her sisters that it was very funny that the chicken's mother should call it "my sweet alligator." After all, their chicken couldn't have been an alligator!
I found this picture book by Leo Lionni particularly appropriate for children 4-5 years old, especially kindergarteners. I absolutely loved this humorous tale of three frogs who adopt an alligator they call "chicken" as their friend. Numerous lesson plans for teachers be drawn from its text, including concepts such as friendship, nature, and differences among animals. As part of my author study for World Literature for Children, I compiled a lesson plan about the many differences between chickens, frogs, and alligators. I had students make a chart listing the differences among each. They also explored new vocabulary, like the word "extraordinary," and each child was able to name something they thought was extraordinary. At the end of the lesson, students could write a follow-up story to "An Extraordinary Egg" and illustrate it with some of the same materials that Leo Lionni used to make the pictures for the book.
The illustrations in "An Extraordinary Egg" are nothing short of amazing and beautiful. With each turn of the page, a colorful double page spread is a feast for the eyes. Pen and ink, pastels, and collage were used to create the setting, three frogs, and the alligator. By doing this, Lionni creates a fun and entertaining world that kids won't hesitate to fall into. His illustrations match the age and reading level of the kids who will read the book because Jessica and her sisters are simply illustrated with materials and colors that four and five year olds like to see and use.
The overall quality of this book is outstanding. The text can certainly stand on its own without the illustrations, although the illustrations bring out a humorous element that is key to the storyline (i.e. the chicken is really an alligator). Both text and illustration complement each other in a way that makes the story funny and enjoyable. Other books by Leo Lionni that are similar to this one are: "Cornelius," "It's Mine!," and "Fish Is Fish." These have similar characters and themes (i.e. friendship) that go along with "An Extraordinary Egg." Ruth Heller also has a book called "Chickens Aren't The Only Ones: World of Nature Series" which is pictoral introduction to most animals that lay eggs.
In short, I think this book is a quality picture book, most appropriate for those who can't read yet or are beginning readers. You won't be disappointed with it, because it is simple, funny, beautifully illustrated, and has lessons about friendship and differences, especially qualities that make us unique. It also comes in a Big Book, so teachers can read it to their class without worrying if students can see or not.

Editorial Review:

Now in Dragonfly comes the tale of three colorful frogs. One finds a pebble.

Another declares it a chicken egg. But what happens when a baby alligator

hatches instead? "Kids will giggle at the frogs' repeated references to the

friendly newborn as `the chicken.' They'll be even more tickled when the frogs

chuckle at the `mother chicken' who, finally reunited with her offspring,

greets her `sweet little alligator'...In his 40th book, Lionni is in

typically fine form" (Publisher's Weekly).

Great 4 Stories of Leo Lionni All in One Book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book has 4 great stories of Leo Lionni: Fredrick, Swimmy, Fish is Fish, & Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, and it comes with a audio CD of all these 4 stories. Also these stories have all original pictures without being ommitted. (Not like "Fredrick's Fables: A Leo Lionni Treasury of Favorite (16) Stories"-out of print) Therefore, you can read the way Lionni had drawn and written. If you like to enjoy Lionni's all pictures for each of the 4 stories, this is a great book to buy.

Editorial Review:

When the late author and illustrator Leo Lionni was young, he answered the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" with a thoroughly unique reply: "The bell of the trolley car." He continued taking the nontraditional approach to life, writing his first children's book at age 50. He went on to write dozens more books, four of which appear in their complete original form in this lovely treasury, with a special tribute by Eric Carle. The collection includes the enduring, endearing favorites Frederick, Fish Is Fish, Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, and Swimmy, all with Lionni's playful watercolors and bold paper cutouts, three of which were named Caldecott Honor Books. To have a sampling of four Lionni's enchanting creations together in one book is truly a gift--you'll be as happy as we are that he didn't pursue the trolley-bell thing. A companion compact disc features a lively recording of each story. (Ages 4 to 8)

An inspiring read for ages two and up 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Although the subject matter of this book initially appeared to be for an older child, it is clear that the text and illustrations appeal as strongly to the younger set. Ever since learning of Matthew the Mouse's determination to become a painter (in contravention of his parents desires that he become a M.D.) my two-year-old son (also named Matthew) has been wielding his paintbrush often and furiously. The illustrations are aesthetically pleasing and clarify the text perfectly. The text, while simple in form, provides excellent vocabulary builders (e.g., use of "embrace" rather than "hug") and also gives the reader the chance to discuss with the child many ideas and activities that take place inside and outside the home. All in all a wonderful find; a story that truly respects a child's right to follow his or her own dreams.

Editorial Review:

"One of Lionni's familiar-looking mice lives in a junk-strewn attic. When

Matthew visits an art gallery, he is entranced. That night Matthew dreams about

walking hand in hand through 'playful patches of color.' He awakens, his

inspiration stays with him and he goes on to paint great things. Lionni uses

familiar collage and color techniques, but what colors! He employs bright, rich

hues that stand out smartly against white backgrounds."--School Library
