Fantastic for early readers! 5 out of 5 stars.

Categorized as "An I Can Read Book" EMMA'S STRANGE PET is perfect for readers in grades 1st and up.

Max wants a puppy like his friend Josh, but his sister Emma is allergic to animals with fur. All seems lost until Emma tells her parents that she too wants a pet. So for her birthday they take her and her brother, Max, to the pet store where she adopts a lizard they name "Stranger." Max relates to Stranger as he is adopted too.

This book is wonderful in many ways as it talks about the affects of life-long allergies, adoption of children and pets, as well as the special bond siblings share, parent love, and how to compromise without giving in or creating hurt feelings. I found EMMA'S STRANGE PET by JEAN LITTLE inspirational, heartwarming, and fun to read with my younger children ages 7 & 8. After reading this book, my children asked several questions regarding adoption and different kinds of pets.

This splendid book would make a wonderful addition to any library and classroom for discussion on any of the topics I have mentioned here.

This reviewer (and her children) highly recommends Little's book EMMA'S STRANGE PET.

Editorial Review:

Pet wanted

Max wants a furry pet. Emma wants a pet too, but she's allergic to animals with fur. When Emma finds the perfect animal, will Max like his sister's strange pet?

An old favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book at a library book fair in the second grade. After one reading, I fell in love with the goofy pictures (I like Kate's hair and messy bedroom) and poetry. It combined poetry and pictures, my two favorite things in a book at that time. Over many years, I have gotten rid of the old books of my childhood, but I have never parted with this one. I take it off the shelf about once a year and read it (since I was seven I've read it ten times). I can empathize with Kate and her love of books, spats with her mother, and her dislike of interpreting poetry. Even though I am not Jewish like Kate, after reading the Diary of Anne Frank like her friend, I felt Jewish too. I also write poetry, but they are usually about my cat and nature. After reading this book many times, my love for Hey World, Here I Am! has never faded.

Editorial Review:

Kate Bloomfield is back! And she's got a lot to say -- about school and friends and parents, about cartwheels (she can't do them), about parsnips (she won't eat them), about being alone and being herself, about life and love...even about Dave Nelson, who doesn't know she's alive. Outspoken, funny, sometimes confused but always observant, Kate is writing it all down -- "Hey World, Here I Am!"

Editorial Review:

When Emma learns that her family is about to adopt a 4-year-old boy, she is thrilled. She has always wanted a little brother and is convinced Max will be the best brother ever. Her friend Sally isn't so sure. "He will be a pest," she says. "All brothers are pests." When Max finally arrives, Emma is stunned that things don't go the way she expects them to. Max had looked little and sweet in the photograph. In real life he looks big, he doesn't smile at her, and he says her homemade cookies are yucky. It's going to take a lot of understanding and some changes in perception for Emma and her new brother to find a way into each other's hearts.

Jean Little's superb early chapter book captures all the emotional ups and downs of adoption and sheds some light on the complex and stressful transition from foster home to adoptive family. Jennifer Plecas manages to portray a world of feelings on the expressive faces of her simply drawn characters and track the evolving moods of the entire family as they move toward empathy and acceptance. Adoptive families will find this sequel to Emma's Magic Winter a great addition to their libraries, as will any reader going through difficult changes. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Little by Little 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book because it was obviously a stuggle for Jean Little, but she still kept on going. She had many goals in her life and most of them was to do something in order to be normal. I think the most important parts of the story is when she gets her different pieces of writing published and actually gets money for it. She has loved books ever since she grew up. I noticed that many books that she has written has connections with her life. Most of them have a disabled person as a character. I think she writes all her books by using her life as a base, but altering many things.

poignant and inspirational 5 out of 5 stars.

I have loved Jean Little's books about children facing special challenges for many years, but only found out recently that she has had her own disabilities to cope with. In this book, she talks about her childhood in China and then Canada, the difficulties she faced going through school with severely impaired vision, and the love and support of her family that enabled her to persevere.

With insight and humor but without self-pity, she tells of the challenges she faced at school, including bullying, as well as the relief when she was put in a sight-savers class and at last found a place where she was "normal" - like the other children in her class - and had teachers who understood her needs.

Against all odds, Little decided to go to university. The book ends as she works as a teacher and writes her first book - one inspired by the need of her disabled students to read realistic stories about children like themselves. After reading this book, I know understand how she writes so knowingly - it's because she has lived many of her stories.

Very sweet book 4 out of 5 stars.

My five-year-old daughter, like the title character in this book, is named Emma and tends to be on the shy side. So I think it has been very fun and enjoyable for her to read this book about a shy little girl who finally has the courage to talk to the new girl who moves into her neighborhood. It's a very sweet book about how the two girls become friends...we definitely plan on reading the others in this series!

Editorial Review:

A new friend?

When Sally moves into the house next door, Emma's mom thinks it will be easy for the two girls to become friends. But Emma is so shy, she can barely even read out loud in school. Will Emma ever make friends with her new neighbor?

This is a delightful imagination book for preschoolers and early grades. Great for read-aloud to groups as well as one on one. Kids can help tell the story along with the reader. I have used it with approximately 85 classes a year for the last 7 years. We have lots of fun with it.

From Anna -- what can I say? The best book ever! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

When I went to my public library a couple of days ago, I never imagined that I would come across two of the best books ever written by a very talented author. 'From Anna' and 'Listen for the Singing' touched me deeply, in a way that no other book has had the ability to do. Although it's language is simple and the style is nothing too out of the ordinary, Jean Little was able to use easy words in a very good way.

The last time 'From Anna' was borrowed was early 1997. Most of us would most probably never take a second glance at the book -- that is, if we judged a book by it's cover. However, if one takes the time to read deeper and look beyond the cover, they will find that they have stumbled across an extraordinary book.

The story starts off with a young 9-year-old Anna Solden, nicknamed 'Awkward Anna' by her older siblings. Anna is indeed very clumsy and klutzy, hence the nickname. When she hears her family is moving from German to Canada, Anna is devastated. She can't learn German; how will she ever cope with English?! But shortly after her arrival in Canada, Thanks to Dr Franz Schumacher and his discovery that Anna has a severe vision disability, Anna receives a pair of glasses, which bring forth a world she never knew -- a world where words and letters aren't masses of grey blur, a world where numbers stay on the page and where the everything is clear and bright.

Anna is sent to a special sight-saving class in order to repair the damage done to her eyes and salvage as much of the remaining ones. There, she learns things about herself -- she CAN have friends, she IS skilled and most of all, she has confidence. Her friends and teacher, Miss Williams, see a whole new Anna devloping as the year draws to a end. A new Anna very different from the old one. And with their help and support, she finally learns to confront her family with secrets that they never knew.

A truly touching and moving story with a very fitting ending. Get this book, enjoy it and read the second one -- 'Listen for the Singing', which is just as good, if not better! A definite book I would recommend with two thumbs up!

Editorial Review:

Anna has always been the clumsy one in the family. Somehow she can never do anything right! She bumps into tables, and she can't read the blackboard at her school. Her perfect brothers and sisters call her "Awkward Anna." When Papa announces that the family is moving from Germany to Canada, Anna's heart sinks. How can she learn English when she can't even read German? Nothing could be worse than this!

But when the Soldens arrive in Canada, Anna learns that there is a reason for her clumsiness. And suddenly, wonderfully, her whole world begins to change.
