disappointed in picture quality 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have borrowed this book numerous times from our local library and I just love the beautiful, vibrant illistrations. However, in this edition the color and vibrancy of the pictures is just not there. Since this is a picture book I am very disappointed.

What Happened to the Illustrations? 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am in agreement with the other reviewers who commented on the poor quality of this reproduction of what was a fabulously illustrated children's alphabet book with a lovely verse and the lesson about giving to tie it all together. However, I went ahead and bought the book for a baby gift and I was very disappointed in the overall faded appearance of the illustrations compared with the original award winning version. It was my children's favorite alphabet book; and the new version doesn't even come close to the original as far as quality of the illustrations, which is what picture books are all about, isn't it? They should really look into re-doing it again. I wouldn't recommend buying it if you have seen the original, there is no comparison.

Editorial Review:

This paperback book presents the alphabet in a different way with a unique story, sounds, pictures and words representing the 26 letters of the alphabet.

Fantastic Fairy Tale 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been trying to find a copy of this book for over a year. A librarian read it to my class when I was just a little kid and I loved it. Upon finding it on Amazon I remembered why...it was such a great story. Not your average princess, she uses resourcefulness and her wits to take charge of her fate. Now my best friend is expecting her first child and I am excited to have someone to get this book for.

Please read this book. 4 out of 5 stars.

The book Princess Furball is a good book because it is full of surprises. Her father is going to make her marry an ogre! The book is full of surprising twists and turns. I think that you should read this book.

Editorial Review:

Once upon a time a cruel King decided to betroth his motherless daughter to an Ogre in exchange for fifty wagons filled with silver. When the Princess learns what her father has done, she is horrified. But she is as clever as she is beautiful. Quickly, the Princess devises a plan to escape and, relying on her own spunk and good sense, ultimately marries the man she chooses for herself.

Editorial Review:

Nominated for a 1998 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, No Pretty Pictures: A Child of War is Anita Lobel's gripping memoir of surviving the Holocaust. A Caldecott-winning illustrator of such delightful picture books as On Market Street, it is difficult to believe Lobel endured the horrific childhood she did. From age 5 to age 10, Lobel spent what are supposed to be carefree years hiding from the Nazis, protecting her younger brother, being captured and marched from camp to camp, and surviving completely dehumanizing conditions. A terrifying story by any measure, Lobel's memoir is all the more haunting as told from the first-person, child's-eye view. Her girlhood voice tells it like it is, without irony or even complete understanding, but with matter-of-fact honesty and astonishing attention to detail. She carves vivid, enduring images into readers' minds. On hiding in the attic of the ghetto: "We were always told to be very quiet. The whispers of the trapped grown-ups sounded like the noise of insects rubbing their legs together." On being discovered while hiding in a convent: "They lined us up facing the wall. I looked at the dark red bricks in front of me and waited for the shots. When the shouting continued and the shots didn't come, I noticed my breath hanging in thin puffs in the air." On trying not to draw the attention of the Nazis: "I wanted to shrink away. To fold into a small invisible thing that had no detectable smell. No breath. No flesh. No sound."

It is a miracle that Lobel and her brother survived on their own in this world that any adult would find unbearable. Indeed, and appropriately, there are no pretty pictures here, and adults choosing to share this story with younger readers should make themselves readily available for explanations and comforting words. (The camps are full of excrement and death, all faithfully recorded in direct, unsparing language.) But this is a story that must be told, from the shocking beginning when a young girl watches the Nazis march into Krakow, to the final words of Lobel's epilogue: "My life has been good. I want more." Flowers A to Z 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Anita Lobel's Alison's Zinnia is a unique alphabet book using a circular tale to lead the reader from A to Z. Each page has one line which begins with a girl's name and a flower for that particular letter and ends with a girl's name for the next letter, "Heather hosed a Hyacinth for Irene". The split page illustrations show a large detailed painting of the flower on top and the story line with the alphabet letter below the text. I believe children will enjoy the challenge of the unusual names and the flowers portrayed in the picture book. In the classroom it would be a great children's literature rewrite. The students could use, for example, boys names and vegetables to create their own classroom version. Another example of her beautiful art work and her ability to capture the details of a flower are in The Rose in my Garden by Arnold and Anita Lobel.

Editorial Review:

"An unusual alphabet book incorporates reinforcement of individual letters into a dazzling display of floral painting as Lobel links girls' names, flowers, and verbs in a chain of floral gifts."--Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.

A Perfect First Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This will now be one of the books I send to all new babies/parents I know. It is a perfect first book, with a simple text. The rhythm flows as each page states an animal's name and the sound it makes. The story has a beginning, middle, and end, beginning with the sun rising and the rooster crowing, and ending with the moon rising and the owl hooting. The illustrations are painted beautifully in the style of Van Gogh, with swirls, dots, and brilliant colors.

Great picture book for beginner readers! 5 out of 5 stars.

Anita Lobel's new book "Hello, Day!" is gorgeously illustrated in a rich palette of colors and enhanced with a simple text that is in a large font - perfect for beginner readers. The story itself is of various animals and the sounds they make, e.g. "The rooster said, Cock-a-doodle-doo!", "The cow said, Moo" and so on. It makes for easy reading and a little child would be able to 'read' as they associate a particular animal with the sound it makes. Highly recommended for preschoolers!

Editorial Review:

What will baby's first word be?

Hello?

Dog?

Cat?

Cow?

Owl?

Nostalgic reaction 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I remember loving this look when I was little...it was a favorite of all my siblings as well, and we would often take it out from the library. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot, but it's the story of a family that always eats potatoes at every meal. The two sons get sick of their lives working in the potato fields and each runs off to join an army...two different armies that must eventually fight each other. That's all I'll say about the plot, but I remember liking the drawings and the anti-war ending. I hope you can find a copy of this wonderful children's book!

Editorial Review:

There was once an old woman who had a potato farm and two hardworking, loving sons. But one day one son ran away to the army of the east; the other son joined the army of the west.

Caldecott Honor artist Anita Lobel tells a powerful story of two brothers who become enemies at war, and their wise mother whose cleverness turns fighting into peace.

A new, full-color edition of the timely and timeless tale Potatoes, Potatoes.

The Perfect Mother's Day Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"This Quiet Lady " would be my perfect Mother's Day Gift. The story is simple: a little girl is looking at photographs of her mother through the years. Her mothers as a baby, as a baby, young girl, bride, and then, finally, as a mother. `This quiet lady, lovely and large...is my mother...And here is where I begin."

Each description of the mother is accompanied by beautiful illustrations showing all the life and love of her mother. This is a lyrically sweet book and one to be shared with your daughters...and your mothers. Trust me....don't just buy it for your daughter....buy it for your mother.

Editorial Review:

What was your mother like as a little girl? How did she look in school? What did she do before you were born? Follow along as one girl joyously searches through old pictures to find out. Generations will be inspired to share family history as they treasure this book together.

Enjoyable book 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed reading this book to my children for several reasons. The pictures were nicely drawn and colorful. My five year old liked to watch a new insect appear on each page and I helped her identify each type of flower that was featured as the story of the bee sleeping in the Rose unfolded. The style of the story was repetitive and progressive, in a ". . . the house that Jack built" way, which appeals to young readers. The rhymes were fun, and some lines had internal rhymes as well.

Sleepy bee blues 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are at all familiar with that classic nursery rhyme, "The House That Jack Built", then you will find Arnold and Anita Lobel's beautiful, "The Rose In My Garden" to be a fine floral form of that already existing style. Using repetitive lines and pictures that, to my mind, are the finest Anita Lobel illustrations existing to date, the book is a perfect accompaniment to any leisurely summer storytime.

Our very first image is of a beautiful red rose in the corner of a page. Says the text, "This is the rose in my garden". Next we see a bee that sleeps in the rose in the garden. Then we view the hollyhocks that give shade to the bee that sleeps on the rose in the garden. From there we are privy to marigolds that stand by the hollyhocks that shade the bee asleep on the rose in the garden. And so on. A variety of different flowers appear and for a second it looks as if this book is no more than a mildly interesting catalogue of flora and fauna. That is, until we meet a small mouse, "quaking in fear". Before you know it a cat has burst through the flowers, wreaking such havoc as pushing the peonies and startling the lilies. All looks lost for the mouse... until the cat wakes the bee asleep in the rose. The final two page image includes a black and white penned shot of an unhappy cat with a bandage on its nose and a parting shot of, once more, the rose in the garden.

The book has a kind of lazy languid attitude to it that works beautifully with the illustrations. Methinks this would read best to those kids that are already in a sleepy state of mind. Aside from the raucous appearance of the cat and mouse chase sequence, very little occurs in this story. Parents who don't know the difference between a peony and a zinnia may take more out of this story than their kids. On the other hand, it's just gosh darn lovely to look at. Ms. Lobel usually draws in an odd cartoony style (ala her somewhat bizarre, "A Treeful of Pigs"), but the only slightly silly shots in this book are of the cat and mouse. Kids who identify with the cat won't appreciate the bee's sudden sting to its nose, but it's not exactly harrowing. They'll deal.

Of the Anita and Arnold Lobel collaborations out there, this one is probably the quietest. I've a special place in my heart for their remarkable, "On Market Street" (their best work) but this book is also worth taking a gander too. Consider it recommended for those children that are patient enough to wade through long descriptive passages to get to the excitement at the book's end.

Editorial Review:

Start with a single rose. Add hollyhocks and marigold, sunflowers and zinnias. VoilĂ ! A quiet, tranquil, beautiful garden grows before your eyes. But who's that hiding in the corner?

This cumulative story by the creators of On Market street, which won a Caldecott Honor Book Award, is sure to be a perennial favorite with youngsters -- and gardeners -- everywhere.

An adventure! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you think cats don't know what is what, then you don't live with a cat. Nini knows her humans are going somewhere and she wants to go, not so much to go, as NOT to be left behind. She knows what goes--suitcase, a pile of shoes, a box of books, and a guitar--and perches on those one after the other as if to say: I want to go, too! No, not in the black thing (her travel bag). But in she goes!

Several pages later (and you must see those pages!) Nini is released in a beautiful country setting where she explores. That night she is brought in for her food and then perches on a window sill and enjoys the setting sun and rising moon. Nini is on a grand adventure.

I was confused the first time I read this. Not that the story is confusing--it isn't--I thought the humans were moving. The book flap explains that Anita Lobel and family live in New York City and spend the summer in Vermont. Nini is their cat. Oh, OK, Nini is having an adventure each summer, but needs reassuring about not being left behind. People are like that, too.

The watercolor and goache combination is simply gorgeous. The result is the transparency of watercolor with the opaqueness of goache, making the colors at once intense yet warm. Some of the pages are similar to Matisse's wild, vibrant artwork and worthy to be framed. The cat lover will smile at recognition at the ways of cats. This is a fine, fun, sweet book that will appeal to both children and adults. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Nini the cat is very, very worried. She loves her comfortable windowsill perch in her sunny home in the city. But the clues are clear: Nini's people are going away. Will they take her? Or will they leave her? And if they take her (and, oh, she hopes they do), will she like wherever it is they are going? Will it feel like home?

Anita Lobel's masterful picture book is for anyone who adores cats and for anyone who has ever moved to a new place. But most of all, it is for anyone who loves coming home.

So simple, so sweet 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The prose is so simple, it's stark:

The seed is thirsty
The rabbit is lost
The boy is bored.

Three separate stories unspool on the same pages, seemingly unlinked until the end: The boy busies himself and in the process saves the rabbit and finds a magic flower grown from the seed.

In a press release, Henkes said he kept the lines spare to allow Lobel room to breath. It was Lobel who decided to set the story in the parched southwest with a Mexican family, invent a father whose departure creates the boy's sour mood, and visually weave the three threads into a unified whole.

She uses watercolors in a warm Mexican palette and deep earth tones to conjure up the boy's narrow world: his house, a sudden storm, an engorged creek and the rabbit's frantic scrambling in the brush.

For adults, this is a lesson on how an author let go of his work so an artist could transform it in unexpected ways. For kids, it's a fun romp about a rainy day.

Editorial Review:

There once was
a boy,
a rabbit,
a magic seed,
and a book.

The boy, who was bored,
went looking for something to do.
The rabbit, who was curious,
explored until he was lost.
The seed was thirsty,
but soon it grew and grew and grew.

And the book?
You are holding it in your hands.
Turn the pages!
It will make you
so happy.
