Deceptive and Shallow "Politically Correct" Version 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am a huge fan of the original Hugh Lofting Dr. Dolittle and not this shallow abridged version. A good part of the story is cut and the history is mutilated. The illustrations are obviously not complete Hugh Loftings even though they still bear his name. Many of his illustrations have been cut and pasted blending them with some weird Victorian style prints. The result is a jumbled mishmash. As a kid, I'm offended that they would take a wonderful piece of literature and trample it with political correctness jargon. There are things said in the original version that I understand would not be appropriate today. But it was a part or our history. And it gives a great opportunity for discussions with parents. As for this story, what is left? The character depth is ruined. The vocabulary is rudimentary. Utter trash. Don't waste your time. Original unabridged or nothing.

Editorial Review:

Doctor Dolittle prefers his animal patients to his people patients. And one day when a mysterious call beckons him to Africa, he discovers that he can talk to animals. Now the people are talking about Doctor Dolittle.

Editorial Review:

Doctor Dolittle--a 19th-century English physician--has never been one for worrying much. Even after his human patients desert him (when one too many sit on one of the doctor's unusual parlor pets), he manages to convert gracefully to animal medicine. Having mastered animal language along the way (with the help of his caustic yet amusing parrot, Polynesia), he has a good head start in his practice. Then, one cold, dark winter night, as the doctor and his pets sit around the fire, a message arrives, via sparrow, from Africa. A terrible epidemic has broken out among the monkeys, and Doctor Dolittle is the only one who can save them. The beneficent physician checks his money box--not a penny left. But the fate of Africa's ailing apes lays squarely on his shoulders.

And so begins the delightful, whimsical adventures that are still enthralling readers three quarters of a century after their original 1920 publication. Hugh Lofting, winner of the 1923 Newbery Medal for The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, has more than a knack for storytelling. His ability to imbue in his characters--human and animal--distinct, unique personalities is remarkable, and his respect for the rights of all who share the planet shines throughout. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

I honestly think this book was sooooooooooo interesting and that anyone who doesn't like it is insane!!!!!! I'm a really good reader but this book was a little hard for me. SO, READ IT NOW!!!!!!!

Extraordinary update 5 out of 5 stars.

Got this book out of the library, and my young daughter was mesmerized by the extraordinary illustrations, as well as being fascinated by the good doctor, and his ability to speak to his various and highly characterized animal friends.

While it's not the original, I wouldn't have been able to read her the original (not on shelves around the libraries where I live). So, this was a really great way to introduce her.

Since she liked this one so much, she's checked out at least 7 other Dolittle books, so I'm quite grateful to Books of Wonder that they re-did this one and the Story of Dr. Dolittle with the Michael Hague illustrations; they opened a whole world to my daughter, and she can read through a couple of pages at a time herself now that she's 8. Also, we read aloud as the bedtime story, and there's plenty to talk about as far as different time, era, animal behavior, friendship etc. I'd never seen any Hague illustrations before and I was bowled over by them myself. I'm ordering off Amazon as a gift book

As far as the editing/censorship, there's still plenty to talk about in adventures taking place in a different time and place.

Editorial Review:

Narrated by nine-year-old Tommy Stubbins, crewman and future naturalist, this book chronicles the delightful voyages of Doctor Dolittle and his faithful friends Polynesia the parrot and Chee-Chee the monkey as they survive a perilous shipwreck on Floating Island and other surprises.

Doctor Dolittle doesn't understand people, but he can talk to animals. His very best friends include a duck, a dog, a pig, and a parrot, and he has more pets than his house will fit! Doctor Dolittle would do anything for his animal friends. But when the monkeys get sick, can he save them in time?

Dr. Dolittle can make kids’ dreams come true—the dream of talking to the dogs, cats, horses, ducks, and monkeys they love so much…and understanding what our furry friends have to say back. The magic begins as the kind physician discovers his special gift of communication—and switches from human to animal patients.

GREAT READ ALOUD 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Both my 5 and 7 year old have enjoyed this book. In fact, they have enjoyed it so much that we are now reading The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle. This book is even better. They wake in the morning asking to be read this book. The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle would be great for a teacher to to read aloud just before writer's workshop. Great descriptors!

Editorial Review:

Doctor John Dolittle loves animals. He loves them so much that his home and office overflow with animals of every description. When Polynesia the parrot teaches him the language of the animals, Doctor Dolittle becomes a world-famous doctor, traveling even as far away as Africa to help his friends. This edition of the beloved children's classic contains black-and-white illustrations by Michael Hague and has been edited by award-winning authors Patricia and Fredrick McKissack for modern audiences.

Editorial Review:

It’s a timeless theme: the desire to go back home, to the place where one belongs. And it’s one that resonates powerfully with small children. So they’ll understand why the sad crocodile is yearning for his faraway native Africa. And though Dr. Dolittle knows his medicine, curing a broken heart is another thing altogether. Can he help? Sympathetic young readers will have their fingers crossed.

Just For Fun 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Hugh Lofting is best known for his Doctor Dolittle stories, for which he won the second annual Newberry Medal for literature. Porridge Poetry is one of his most imaginative works, in writing as well as his silly illustrations. Reading the introduction allows you to see "The Man Who Spoke to Animals," through the eyes of his beloved son, Christopher.

Lofting served as a combat engineer in the Irish Guard, one of the British Army's elite regiments. While in the trenches he wrote home to his children, Colen and Elizabeth, subsequently creating Dr. Dolittle. His wife kept all the letters and sketches he sent home and suggested that he put them into book form. The name Dolittle is a spin-off of the nickname "Mr. Do- Little given to his half brother because he seemed to "do little around the house."

You and your child will enjoy the silly poems contained in this imaginative book. See the cute little pig, Virginia Ham dance and sing a merry tune. Enjoy the pipe smoking Sweet Potato Bug as he converses with a fledgling bird. Why is Mr. Beers digging a tunnel to China, and why is Scrubby Chubby scowling and growling. Each page contains a colorful illustration accompanied by a silly poem.

Editorial Review:

A collection of 38 imaginative, mysterious, bizarre and down right silly poems illustrated in fully color with some of Hugh Lofting's finest artwork. In this volume the Porridge Poet fires the imagination, enticing you to wonder why Mr. Beers is digging a tunnel down to China, and what the Chinese think of that? What other adventures the Pirate of the Kitchen Sink might have besides terrorizing innocent cups and saucers? And just what tales is the Palm Family whispering about at the edge of an African Lagoon? A Foreword by Christopher Lofting, The Man Who Spoke to Animals, offers an insider's view of Hugh Lofting's idiosyncrasies and tidbits about the author's personal ties to the delightful characters that emerged from his imagination.
